Lobster
MushroomsStrange but delicious, Lobster Mushroomis actually not a mushroom, but a parasiticfungus that grows on mushrooms.
Lobstermushrooms
are one of themost favoredmushrooms as
they create an abundance ofrich and fruity flavors. Their coloring isdeep, creating colors of coral, cinnamonand rust. Their flesh is granular andbrittle.
Add to soups, stews and terrines. Slicethin; saut with onions and new potatoes.Blend in omelets or scrambled eggs.Lobster mushrooms hold their textureafter cooking; they may be added to
stuffing or baked pasta dishes as well assimple broth soups and cream sauces.Store in a paper bag.

* Strawberry quality is fair at best* Lemon demand is exceeding supplies on allsizes and grades* Oranges are getting very tight on the smallsizes 113s and 138s
Wthr:An upper level low pressuresystem over Central California moves eastover the next few days. This may bringsome monsoonal moisture from the southinto Central California keeping the threat oflightning and thunderstorms in the regionover the next few days. Moderate on shoreflow will keep the coastal areas near normswith inland areas reaching the upper 80s tolow 90s. High pressure builds intothe weekend with slight warming.
sprgu:This market is firm.Hail in the growing regions ofMexico has curtailed production with allsuppliers. Production in Peru is moderateat best. Loading directly in Miami is anoption. Jumbo sizing continues to be verylight but available. This size will commanda higher price.
vcd: California is going strong andquality is excellent, with sizes peakingon 60s and larger. Mexico is beginningtheir Flor Loca crop harvest. This fruit willtake longer to ripen as mature levels arelow. Peruvian fruit supplies are good and
will continue through August. Their fruitis mostly 48s and larger, with a limitedamount of 60s. Fruit quality is good, withvery good maturity levels. As we get into thesecond half of August, supplies of all originwill begin to decline and market looks to getvery active.
Bl Pppr:Western Bells: Supplies are improving ongreen bell peppers from Fresno. Bakersfieldand Arvin area are about wrapping up.California red bell market is settling. Webelieve this will be short lived as some
current districts production is projectedto be very light. Red bells both open fieldand hothouse is crossing through SouthTexas. Demand exceeds on Red and Goldbell peppers from both districts. Coloredbell peppers supplies from California willcontinue to be a challenge for the remainderof the season until Baja California kicksin this fall. Gold bells markets continueat HIGH fobs and very light suppliesavailability depends on growing district.Mexico has basically wrapped up on bothhothouse and open field gold bells. Somegreenhouse gold bell peppers are crossingthrough South Texas.
Eastern Bells: Volume in Michigan hasramped up, softening the market somewhat.Decent weather should hold this marketdown for several more days.
Ctru:Lemons: Demand continuesstrong and is exceeding supply on all sizesand grades. Fruit is especially tight on 165sand larger fruit due to lack of growth because
of drought conditions in California. Expectthese tight supplies to get worse before theyget better over the next eight weeks.
Limes: Demand continues to exceedsupplies. The market is rising across theboard with the larger sizes increasing morethan the smaller ones. A new growing areahas been producing small sizes with goodquality. The overall quality of the old cropis acceptable with some yellowing andminor defects showing. Volume overall islower due to quality caused by warmer thannormal temperatures.
Oranges:Valencia supplies aresteady. Sizing continues to favorthe 88s/72s/113s sizes. Demand isincreasing on the smaller fruit 113s and138s have become very tight with thisincreased demand brought on by schooldemand starting.
Grp: The market is strengtheningbut supplies are still available on red, green, blacks and globes. Sizing isrunning anywhere from small to extralarge on all fruit.
Mln:Cantaloupe:Still good volume available dueto light demand. Quality is good. Sizing forthe most part is peaking to 9s and 12s withlesser availability on small fruit.
Honeydew:The Westside fruit is available, fruit continues to peak to large sizes. Themarket is steady to higher.
Stn Fru: California stone fruit isavailable with a mixed bag of colors andsizing available from different shippers.
Small fruit remains very limited onnectarines. Both red and black plums andpluots remain available with excellentquality and good promotable volume.
Tmt:Western/Mexico: Eastern Mexico continuesto cross minimal volume through Texasdue to lighter plantings. Baja is harvestingfrom both their spring and summer acreageproviding steady supply. Southern Californiais in the midst of the summer plantings.Volume will not increase from this districtuntil September. Mexico is producing lighter
volume of Romas this week through Texadue to rain from last week. Production isexpected to remain moderate until earlyto mid October. With demand for Romasslowing down, expect prices to drop. Chertomatoes are still very limited while thegrape tomato is available and expected to plentiful for the next two weeks.
Eastern/Tomatoes:Round tomatoeshave a steady hold on pricing with less
available product available on all sizes dueto rainy weather and disrupted harvestschedules. With product tightening thisweek higher prices are expected as we heinto the middle of the month. With scattelocal programs in the east, small operationhave flooded the market with a lot of romtomatoes keeping prices low for the nextseveral weeks. Grape tomatoes are availabin steady volume with cherry tomatoesharder to come by.
Wtrml:Market is steady Phoenixwrapping up harvesting. Current crops ar
mostly packed in bins and cartons packedrequest. South Texas and Mendota Califorare currently shipping.
