Digital Health & Trend of Moving Beyond the Pill for Pharmas

¾Pharma companies must move from a "selling the pill" model to truly integrated patient care. Will lower costs of innovation and trigger new business opportunities.

¾Mobile health is instrumental in the movement toward more patient-centric healthcare

¾Big data is a big opportunity for pharmas. It will ease discovery of new medicines and open new avenues for improved patient care (personalized medicine, faster, safer and less expensive clinical trials and innovations)*

¾There is a real systemwide refocusing on health outcomes improvementwhich pharmas must be part of

*McKinsey estimated that just the U.S. healthcare system could save $300 billion a year through the

better integration and analysis of health data.

A few examples of revenue generating potential for pharmas

•New products and services: Ex WellDoc solution is mobile coaching solution for diabetes patients. Now FDA approved reimbursed by health insurances at up to $50-$100/month. Other ex could be: ingestible or wearable sensors, connectedDevices etc.

•Diagnosing the undiagnosed: ex 45,8% of cases of adult diabetes in the world are undiagnosed and 84% of them are located in low- and middle-income countries. Awareness mHealth campaigns could be a powerful tool to identify undiagnosed cases

•Adherence: The MediSafe app which sends SMS reminders showed a 81% adherence improvement for a treatment of type 2 diabetes. Non-adherence of treatments leads to a decrease of sales of 36% for pharma companies (& costs the health-system just in the US estimated at $290 billion annually)

•Supply Chain: ex SMS project in Mozambique decreased vaccine stock problems from 80% to 1%. Novartis, in partnership with Vodacom, has shown in Tanzania that SMS system ("TEXT for Life") reduced inventory issues on drugs for tuberculosis in rural centers from 79% to less than 26%.

•Improve Go-to-Market Strategies: mHealth requires collaborative work with patients, caregivers, insurers, patient associations, regulators and governments.

mHealth Challenges for pharma Industry

•Pharmas are not as trusted by patients as physicians

or even insurers

•Pharma companies are typically risk averse in large part due to development of drug programs being about managing risks

•Unclarity on ROI and business models•Lack of expertise in the area of digital • Big change of mindset needed: pharmas are organized around the solution being the product

•Regulatory challenges, Data Privacy, Interoperabilty & Standardization

•Lack of clinical evidence

•Lack of involvement from patients in the design of the apps

Some recommendations

•Cross-sector partnerships between ICT sector & pharma are key!

•Don’t necessarily think only along traditional ways of branding •Set up innovation teams who can focus on LT opportunities

•Get governments onboard

• Allow innovation/incubation on the business models depending on the markets and the services

•Plan and implement Measurement & Evaluation
