Hellooooooooo Vineyarders!!! New Year’s Resolution for 2014: Hiya hiya, 55-plussers. Ear’s writing this while snowbound in Vineyard Ha- ven. Our hubba-hubby, David Duarte, considers Winter Storm Janus much ado about nada since we didn’t get the 12- 18 inches of snowfall and 50 mph wind gusts as predicted. The power didn’t even go out. Not exciting enough for vintage Islanders who keep compar- ing all storms with Hurricane Bob. As for moi, flushing the toilet with pails of water dipped out of the tub doesn’t cause my serotonin levels to topple off the charts. The house shaking and the roof threatening to fly away doesn’t jump-start my libido. (But then, not much does at my age.) David didn’t even insist we Drop Everything to make that harrowing drive up to Squibnocket Beach to Check Out the Surf. The thing is, Ear was busily rewriting her list of Amended New Year’s Resolutions: 1. We solemnly swear to keep all our body parts intact for the coming year. On June 3rd of 2013, we had our left knee totally replaced. It was a total suc- cess thanks to Dr. Paul Dimond at the Falmouth Hospital. On January 17th of 2014, we had our extreme hammer toe (second toe, left foot, the piggy that stayed home) amputated. All went well thanks to Dr. James Boyle in Hyannis who specializes in ankle and foot sur- gery. Many are shocked that Ear would opt such a severe measure, but the toe wasn’t serving any useful purpose and now we can wear any of our 100 pairs of shoes. We girls have our priorities. Ear can’t wait to go to the nail salon and ask for a discount on our pedicure! Up Island Council on Aging; Howe’s House: Extraordinary UICOA Outreach Worker, Ellen Reynolds, called Ear to tell us about the highly informative and well-received program presented at their recent VIP (Vineyard Isle Parkinsonians) monthly meeting on January 13th. Guest speakers for the event were: Dr. David Lowell, the neu- rologist who designed and implemented the Parkinson’s Center for Compre- hensive Care at Spaulding Cape Cod in Sandwich, and Dawn Lucier, physical therapist and neuro-education coordina- tor at the Rehabilitation Hospital for the Cape and Islands in Sandwich. Ellen, a veteran 19-year outreach savant, orga- nized the event. Dr. Lowell addressed current theories and research related to Parkinson’s Disease and described the in-patient and out-patient programs at the RHCI. Patients and caregivers are welcomed participants in both programs. There are hands-on and educational activities. Anyone interested can call Dawn Lucier at 508-833-4165. Dawn Lucier and Dr. Lowell work as a team with patients and, if needed, add oc- cupational and speech therapists, nutri- tionists, and a psychiatrist to their team. Lucier taught the group several stretch- ing exercises essential to help patients stay limber. Everyone involved was ex- tremely pleased by the large turnout. The VIP support group organized in 2003 meets the second Monday of the month @ 10:30 a.m. at Howe’s House. The UICOA Parkinson’s Disease sup- port group is held up as model program for others to follow by the MA Chap- ter of the American Parkinson’s Disease Association. There are from 15-20 individuals active in the group which is headed up by: a nurse, a social worker (Ellen Reynolds) and a patient coordina- tor (Ken Beebe). Center for Living Holiday Appeal Letter: The new-year has started out on a positive note for the MV Center for Living—the response in donations from our recent Holiday Appeal Letter has en- joyed a significant increase. In view of this gratifying response, Ear has decided to reprint our letter in this column—in case you are not on our mailing list: “We Need Your Help. Our Island’s 60+ population grew by an average of 50% in the last 10 years. The Supportive Day Program, which has operated for 28 years out of the Edgartown and Tisbury Senior Centers, has outgrown these spaces. We provide respite for families, supporting them in their determination to provide care and quality of life for their loved ones at home, avoiding or preventing nursing home placement. Countless families have told us that their loved ones, our cli- ents, would not be living safely and hap- pily among family and friends, were it not for the Supportive Day Program. We simply do not have the available space or resources to accommodate the num- ber of families in need of our services. The top priority of the Martha’s Vine- yard Center for Living is to provide adequate space for the Supportive Day Program; one that will afford us the ability to assist all these families and the many more who will seek our services in the years to come. We are currently working with County Government of- ficials who are eager to have our new space become a reality. The old saying, “It takes a village” clear- ly applies here.
