Luke Shadid (BRAD) – Shadid helped the Braves to a 3-1 week by batting .471 with a .526 on-base percentage from his leadoff spot … Shadid directly contributed to eight runs in the four games, scoring four and driving in five with one home run included in both totals … He was also 3-for-3 in stolen base attempts and successfully handled all 19 fielding opportunities in the four games … After going 1-for-4 Tuesday against Dartmouth, Shadid was 2-for-5 with a double, a steal, two RBI’s and a run scored Wednesday against the Big Green … In Thursday’s series finale, Shadid contributed to five of Bradley’s six runs by going 3-for-5 with a home run, a walk, three RBI’s and three runs scored … He finished the week by going 2-for-4 with a walk and two steals in Saturday’s spring break trip finale.

Austin Bell (DBU) – DBU redshirt junior Austin Bell led the Patriots in RBIs over the week of March 18-24th despite playing in just one game. The transfer from New Mexico tied program records with six hits and nine RBIs in Sunday’s 30-7 rout of Air Force. Bell reached base in all seven plate appearances and scored five times Sunday while collecting three doubles and a home run.

Danny Borgstrom (UE) – Freshman Second Baseman Danny Borgstrom continued the hot start to his college ca-reer, batting .455, with a .818 slugging percentage, driving in 4 RBIs across the weekend. For the season, Borgstrom is second on the Aces in batting (.329) and tops on the team in RBIs (18).

MacGregor Hines (DBU) – DBU redshirt junior righthander MacGregor Hines came through in a big spot Friday in a 12-inning win at Air Force. The College Station, Texas, native struck out five batters while walking just one and limiting the Falcons to two hits through the ninth, 10th, and 11th innings to earn his second win of the season. Hines struck out the first three batters he faced to send the game to extra innings and did not allow a runner past second base.

Alex Weigand (UE) – Senior LHP Alex Weigand delivered a much-needed strong performance against Xavier in the series finale in Cincinnati Sunday, allowing just one run on six hits, while striking out six batters across five innings, earning his second win of the season in Evansville’s 10-2 victory over the Musketeers.

Brett Wicklund (ILS) – Brett Wicklund was spectacular in his start this week for Illinois State. The sophomore right-handed pitcher tossed the midweek matchup versus the UIC Flames. Wicklund went six complete innings giving up three hits which were all singles with no walks and five strikeouts. Wicklund held the Flames to a .143 batting average in the outing as he earned the victory in the 4-0 win.

Triston Polley (INS) – Senior starting pitcher Triston Polley threw seven shutout innings in Friday night’s 3-1 win against Rutgers. Polley allowed just three base hits and struck out five Scarlet Knight hitters in the no decision. The outing marked the fifth time this season that Polley has allowed no more than one run in a start.

Colin Fields (VALPO) – Fields had his second straight stellar outing, this time pitching Valpo to a 5-2 win over instate Big East foe Butler in the middle game of a three-game series. Game Winners Blayne Jones collected a pair of game-winning hits during the week. His 12th-inning single plated the go-ahead run at Air Force on Friday, and his two-run eighth-inning triple Tuesday put DBU in front of Oklahoma State for good. Jones extended his hitting streak to 10 games Sunday with his first multi-hit game of the year.

Strong Senior ArmsSenior starting pitchers MD Johnson and Jordan Martinson are making their way up the DBU career leaderboards. Through six weekend series, Johnson sits in second place in DBU’s Divi-sion I era with 22 wins, third in starts (47), third in strikeouts (213), and fifth in innings pitched (236.1). Martinson is fifth in starts (42), tied for fifth in wins (17), fifth in strikeouts (206), and seventh in innings pitched (221.2).

Glowenke Extends StreakJimmy Glowenke extended his reached-base streak to 52 games, posting a .545 OBP against Oklahoma State and Air Force, including an active three-game hit-by-pitch streak. The sophomore shortstop is 17 games short of Jason Krizan’s program record of 69.

MVC MagicMissouri State enters conference play this week looking to extend a string of unprecedented success against its Valley foes. The Bears went 18-3 during league play last spring en route to their second-straight MVC regular-season crown, running their two-year MVC mark to 36 wins in 40 total conference games. Coupled with their 4-0 week at the 2019 Valley Tournament, the Bears have won 43 of their 49 total contests against MVC foes over the previous two seasons.

Heating UpBears All-American Drew Millas suffered through a challenging opening month of the season, missing two weeks with a hamstring injury while struggling at the plate with a .129 batting mark through his first eight games of 2019. But the junior catcher has caught fire over the last two weeks, hitting .333 (9-for-27) with a .486 on-base percentage, two home runs and four RBIs since March 12. Millas has reached base safely via a hit, walk or hit by pitch in eight straight games, logging hits in seven of those, including each of his last five (since March 16).

Righting the ShipWhile the Bears’ 5-16 mark represents their worst-ever start through 21 games, they do own a track record of flipping early results under head coach Keith Guttin. On three separate occasions, MSU has overcome sluggish starts to post winning season records, including two seasons in which they ultimately earned postseason bids after getting off to rocky starts. In 1996 and 1997, the Bears captured their first two MVC Tournament titles, but not before getting off to a 9-13 start in 1996 and a 1-8 start the following year. MSU’s previous all-time worst start in 1993 saw the Bears open with just six wins in their first 21 contests, only to end up with a 32-23 season mark after winning 25 of their final 29 regular-season games.

Grace struck out seven and didn’t issue a walk, limiting opponents to just two singles and an .077 batting average on the week. In his most impressive outing of his young career, Grace pitched six innings of one-hit shutout baseball against Morehead State, who entered the weekend among the nation’s top-12 offenses in batting average and scoring.

Hot at HomeSIU went 3-1 at Itchy Jones Stadium last week, improving to 10-2 at Itchy Jones Stadium this year. The hot home start is the best for the program since also starting 10-2 at home (then Abe Martin Field) in 2008. The Salukis are 4-0 at home in one-run games after going 3-0 in one-run games last week. Overall, SIU is 11-2 in its last 13 games against unranked teams.

Yeager is the BombJustin Yeager pitched 4.1 innings without allowing an earned run for Southern Illinois in the 3-1 week. SIU went 3-0 in games Yeager pitched in. On the season, Yeager is SIU’s best ERA at 1.64 and has allowed only two earned runs all season. One of those earned runs was in the season-opening weekend; since then, Yeager has allowed just one earned run in eight appearances, putting up an 0.93 ERA in 9.2 innings. Yeager has allowed only five hits (all singles) this season while striking out 14.

Bullpen Bright SpotsThe majority of Valpo’s bullpen saw action in this past weekend’s series against Butler, and the results were largely successful for most of those arms. Seven Valpo relievers pitched at least one inning against the Bulldogs and did not allow a run. Easton Rhodehouse continued his recent roll by working scoreless frames in both games of Saturday’s doubleheader. In the nightcap, he earned his first save of the year and the fifth of his career. James Meyer saw his first action since 2017 on Sunday and retired the side in order. Tanner Skidmore, Jarrett Hammel, Keegan Bates, Jim Jarecki and Josh Currier also had strong showings.

Fields Still FiringValpo freshman Colin Fields moved into the No. 2 spot in the pitching rotation this past weekend and continued to thrive, racking up a career-high 11 strikeouts while picking up his second straight victory in a 5-2 win over Butler. Over his last two starts, Fields has a 2.57 ERA and 2-0 record with 20 strikeouts against just three walks.

Denting the Hit ColumnValpo junior Riley Dent has climbed into the team lead in batting average at .333. He ripped his first career triple for a key insurance tally late in Saturday’s Game 2 victory over Butler. Dent owns a seven-game hitting streak to continue a breakout offensive season after he batted .209 a year ago and .206 as a freshman.
