Their enthusiasm, positive, ‘give it a go’ attitude and excellent resilience has been on show and they have done exactly what we asked of them- given it their very best! I must also take this opportunity to thank our Year 6 teachers and the staff who have supported them through the recent preparations to ensure that they were so ready for this experience. Attendance Overall, attendance across the school has been good this year, but it could be even better! We still have small proportion of children whose attendance causes concern and we work closely with our Education Welfare Officer to address this issue. Unless they really are poorly, it is so, so important that your child is in school every day. Research, as well as what we see in school, says that if a child is not in school as often, they do not make the same progress with their learning. Please help your child do well at school by making sure they come to school every day. Dear parents and carers,

My first comment this week must go to our amazing Year 6 children who have conducted themselves exceptionally well during their SATs tests. PE Kit The weather was beautiful on Tuesday- perfect for outdoor PE, however, I was disappointed to see a small number of children not taking part in lessons as they did not have the correct kit in school. Whilst we encourage developing independence, parents also need to take responsibility for ensuring their young children have the right kit in school, including trainers/pumps for outdoor games.

Enjoying PE and sport at Somers Park

Pick up time reminders Please can you remind your children not to use scooters on the playground at school pick up time. We do not allow children to ride their scooters on the school’s premises due to the large number of people about, including younger siblings.

In addition, we do not allow children to play on the field at the end of the school day as there is no school staff supervision at this time. We are noticing a number of children (mainly Reception and Key Stage 1) running around the field, some of whom are playing roughly without supervision. Please support school staff by ensuring your children are not using the field after school.

Cracking Cricket! Many of our cricket teams have been in action this week, with positive results for all of them. Not only have they represented the school in the excellent manner we would expect, we have also achieved lots of sporting success:

Year 6 Girls: Worcestershire West Kwik Cricket Festival Winners.

Year 6 Boys: Worcestershire West Kwik Cricket Festival Runners Up

Year 4/5: Worcestershire West Year 4 & Year 5 Kwik Cricket Festival Winners.

Florence Nightingale Florence came into Year 2 on Thursday to tell the children about her life and times! Here’s what the children thought:

‘That was the best history lesson ever!’ Chloe

‘I loved helping Florence clean Scutari Hospital.’ Harley

‘I liked helping Florence nurse the poorly soldiers.’ Charlie

‘Acting like an injured soldier made me feel sad for people who get hurt in wars.’ Isabella

‘I liked learning about history and acting!’ Megan

‘I can't believe Florence didn't go to school and her parents wanted her to get married instead of becoming a nurse.’ Aimee

All smiles at 3SD Family Learning

3SD Family Learning ‘Last week, parents and grandparents of the children in 3SD braved the damp weather to participate in our forest school activities.

A fantastic hour was had by all with the adults working in pairs / teams with their children to complete four tasks including:

1) Completing the children's dream-catchers with forest materials. (The main object had been designed and created in school before our forest school session.)

2) Creating forest pictures on the forest floor.

3) Making a forest guardian with clay.

4) Developing a scent box comprised of different plants and flowers that the (grand) parent/child teams could find.

It was brilliant to see the highly creative designs and concepts developed by our partners and teams and so nice to see such enthusiasm and excellent participation from the adults and children alike.

Luckily, the drizzle seemed to fade away for our magical hour and, once the finishing touches to everyone's designs were completed, we celebrated with a nice cup of hot chocolate and chocolate biscuit on the playground.

Thanks to both the children and their parents and grandparents for making it such a wonderful time together, as well as to all the adults behind the scenes who helped to make it a fantastic experience.’

Reading at home with your children

Why is reading so important? Evidence suggests that children who read for enjoyment every day not only perform better in reading tests than those who don’t, but also develop a broader vocabulary, increased general knowledge and a better understanding of other cultures. In fact, there’s evidence to suggest that reading for pleasure is more likely to determine whether a child does well at school than their social or economic background.

Top 10 tips to help children enjoy

reading

1. Make books part of your family life – Always have books around so that you and your children are ready to read whenever there’s a chance.

2. Join your local library – Get your child a library card. You’ll find the latest videogames, Blu-rays and DVDs, plus tons and tons of fantastic books. Allow them to pick their own books, encouraging their own interests.

3. Match their interests – Help them find the right book - it doesn’t matter if it’s fiction, poetry, comic books or non-fiction.

4. All reading is good – Don’t discount non-fiction, comics, graphic novels, magazines and leaflets. Reading is reading and it is all good.

5. Get comfortable! – Snuggle up somewhere warm and cosy with your

child, either in bed, on a beanbag or on the sofa, or make sure they have somewhere comfy when reading alone.

6. Ask questions – To keep them interested in the story, ask your child questions as you read such as, ‘What do you think will happen next?’ or ‘Where did we get to last night? Can you remember what had happened already?’

7. Read whenever you get the chance – Bring along a book or magazine for any time your child has to wait, such as at a doctor’s surgery.

8. Read again and again – Encourage your child to re-read favourite books and poems. Re-reading helps to build up fluency and confidence.

9. Bedtime stories – Regularly read with your child or children at bedtime. It’s a great way to end the day and to spend valuable time with your child.

10. Rhyme and repetition – Books and poems which include rhyme and repetition are great for encouraging your child or children to join in and remember the words. This information is from Pearson.com.
