gamme SM6description (cont.)

Cubicles are made up of five compartmentsseparated by metal or insulating partitions.

switchgear compartment(switch and/or disconnector)

busbar compartment

This compartment is separated from thebusbar compartment and the connectioncompartment by the enclosure surroundingthe switch, the disconnector and theearthing switch.

The three insulated busbars are parallel-mounted. Connection is made to the upperpads of the enclosure using a fielddistributor with integrated captive screws.Ratings 400 - 630 - 1250 A.

Page 16: MV distribution Factory built assemblies SM6 range 3 to 24 kV

15

connection and switchgearcompartment (circuit breaker)

operating-mechanismcompartment

low-voltage compartment

The network cables are connected to theterminals of the switch and the earthingswitch. Transformer cables are connectedto the lower fuse holder or to thedownstream connection pads of the circuitbreaker. Cables may have either:c simplified terminations for dry-type one orthree-core cables*;c heat-shrink ends for dry-type or paper-insulated cables*.With basic equipment, the maximumallowable cross-section for cables is:c 630 mm2 for 1250 A incoming or outgoingunits.c 240 mm2 for 400 - 630 A incoming oroutgoing cubicles.c 95 mm2 for transformer protectioncubicles incorporating fuses. The earthing switch must be closed beforethe cubicle may be accessed. The reduceddepth of the cubicle makes for easyconnection of all phases. A studincorporated in the field distributor makes itpossible to position and secure the cable-end lug with a single hand.

This compartment contains the variousoperating functions for the:c switch and earthing switch;c disconnector(s);c circuit breaker;c contactor;and the voltage indicators. The operating-mechanism compartment forthe switch, earthing switch anddisconnector(s) may be accessed with thecables and busbars energised and withoutisolating the substation. It also enables easy installation ofpadlocks, locks and standard LVaccessories (auxiliary contacts, trip units, motors, etc.).

If the switch operating mechanism ismotorised, this compartment is equippedwith a terminal block and LV fuses. It maybe enlarged by adding an enclosure with adoor on the top of the cubicle. These compartments may be accessedwith the cables and busbars energised andwithout isolating the substation.

SF6 rangedescription (cont.)SF6 switchgear

SF6, the switchgearmanufacturer’s gas

switch or disconnector and earthing switch

SM6 switch-disconnectors and earthingswitches and the SFset and SF1 circuitbreakers use sulphur hexafluoride gas(SF6) for insulation and breaking. The active parts are placed in an insulatingenclosure in accordance with the definitionof IEC 56/Appendix EE (1987 edition) forsealed pressure systems.SM6 devices offer remarkablecharacteristics:■ long service life;■ maintenance-free active parts;■ high electrical endurance;■ very low over-voltage level;■ operating safety.

The three rotating contacts are placed in anenclosure filled with gas to a relativepressure of 0.4 bars (400 hp). This systemoffers maximum operating reliability:c gas tightnessThe enclosure filled with SF6 gas satisfies“sealed pressure system” requirements andseal tightness is always checked in thefactory.c operating safetyv the switch may be in one of threepositions, “closed”, “open” or “earthed”,representing a natural interlocking systemthat prevents incorrect operation.Moving-contact rotation is driven by a fast-acting mechanism that is independent ofthe action of the operator.v The device combines the breaking anddisconnection functions.v The earthing switch placed in the SF6has a short-circuit making capacity, incompliance with standards.v any accidental over-pressures areeliminated by the opening of the safetymembrane, in which case the gas isdirected toward the back of the unit, thusavoiding projection or other relatedphenomena in front.c breaking principleThe exceptional qualities of SF6 gas areused to extinguish the electrical arc. Toincrease cooling of the arc, a relativemovement is created between the arc andthe gas. The arc appears when the fixedand moving contacts separate. Thecombination of the current and a magneticfield created by a permanent magnetprovokes arc rotation around the fixedcontact, resulting in arc extension andcooling until it is extinguished at currentzero. The distance between the fixed and movingcontacts is then sufficient to withstand therecovery voltage. This system is both simple and sure andalso provides improved electricalendurance due to very low wear oncontacts.

Fluarc SFset or SF1 circuit breaker

SFset circuit breaker with integratedprotection relay and sensors

SF1 circuit breaker

The Fluarc SFset or SF1 circuit breaker ismade up of three separate poles mountedon a structure supporting the operatingmechanism. Each pole-unit houses all theactive elements in an insulating enclosurefilled with gas to a relative pressure of 0.5bars (500 hp). This system offers maximumoperating reliability:c gas tightnessThe enclosure filled with SF6 gas satisfies“sealed pressure system” requirements andseal tightness is always checked in thefactory.c operating safetyAs for switch-units, accidental over-pressures are eliminated by the opening ofthe safety membrane.c breaking principleThe circuit breaker is based on the SF6 gasautocompression principle. The inherentqualities of SF6 and the soft breakresulting from this technique reduceswitching over-voltages.v precompressionWhen the contacts begin to open, thepiston slightly compresses the SF6 gas inthe pressure chamber.v arcing periodThe arc then forms between the arcingcontacts and the piston continues itsdownward movement. A small quantity ofgas, directed by the insulating nozzle, isinjected into the arc.The cooling of the arc is thus achievedthrough forced convection for theinterruption of low currents, however, duringthe interruption of high currents, thermalexpansion is responsible for the transfer ofthe hot gases toward the cold parts of thepole unit. Toward current zero, the distancebetween the two arcing contacts issufficient for final interruption of the currentdue to the dielectric properties of the SF6gas.v sweeping over-strokeThe moving parts finish their travel whereasthe cold gas injection continues until thecontacts are completely open.

Rollarc 400 or 400 D contactorThe three phases are placed in anenclosure filled with SF6 gas to a relativepressure of 2.5 bars (2500 hp). This system offers maximum operatingreliability:c gas tighnessThe enclosure satisfies «sealed pressuresystem» requirements and seal tightnessis always checked in the factory.c operating safetyAccidental over-pressures are eliminatedby the opening of the safety membrane.c breaking principleThe contactor implements on the rotatingarc technique using SF6.Rotation of the arc between the circulararcing contacts is driven by anelectromagnetic field. The field is produced by a solenoid throughwhich the current to be interrupted flowsat the moment of opening. The rotatingmovement cools the arc by forcedconvection. At the beginning of the opening operation, the main contacts and the arcing contactsare closed. The main circuit is cut by the separationof the main contacts. The arcing contactsare still closed.Separation of the arcing contacts closelyfollows that of the main contacts. The arc is subjected to the electromagneticfield produced by the arc-quenching coil, proportional to the current to be interrupted. The arc rotates rapidly, driven by theelectromagnetic forces and is thus cooledby forced convection.Due to the phase shift between the currentand the magnetic field, this force is stillsignificant at zero current. At zero current, the gap between the twoarcing rings recovers its initial dielectricstrength due to the intrinsic properties ofSF6.

motor protectionwith CRM unitsselection of fusesThe current rating of fuses installed in CRMunits depends on:c motor current rating In,c starting current Id,c frequency of starts. The fuses rating is calculated such that acurrent equal to twice the starting currentdoes not blow the fuse within period equalto the starting time. The adjacent table indicated the ratingswich should be used, based on thefollowing assumptions:c direct on-line startup,c Id/In 6,c pf = 0.8 (P < 500 kW) or0.9 (P > 500 kW),c η = 0.9 (P < 500 kW) or0.94 (P > 500 kW),The indicated values are for Fusarc fuses(to DIN standard 43-625).Example:Consider a 950 kW motor at 5 kV.

Id = 6 x In = 780 AThen select the next higher value, i.e. 790 A.For six 5-second starts per hour, selectfuses rated 200 A.Note :The same motor could not be protected for12 starts per hour since the maximumservice voltage for the required 250 A ratedfuses is 3.3 kV.

Replacement of fusesWhen fault clearance results in one or twoblown fuses, it is still common practice toreplace only the blown fuses. However, though the remaining fuse(s)may apparently be in good condition, theiroperating characteristics are generallyreduced due to the short-circuit. If non-blown fuses remain in service, they mayblow even at very low over-current values. In systems where continuity of service isof importance, it is recommended toreplace all three fuses , in compliancewith IEC recommendation 282.1.

Access to fusesAccess is via the front with the front panelremoved. Fuses may be removed withouttools by simply pulling them forward. Thefield deflector pivots and automaticallyreturns to its position.

floor preparationUnits may be installed on ordinary concretefloors, with or without trenches dependingon the type and cross-section of cables.Required civil works are identical for all400 - 630 A units. To reduce the depth of trenches by 400 mm(for the 400- 630 A units), which in manycases is sufficient to eliminate trenchesaltogether, units may be installed on aconcrete footing prepared when pouring thefloor.Installation of 400 - 630 A units ona footing:c enables installation in rooms wheretrenches are not possible;c in no way affects substation switchingoperation. For the 1250 A units DM1-A and DM1-W,a floor void must be foreseen.

fixing of unitsWith each otherThe units are simply bolted together to formthe MV switchboard (bolts supplied).Busbar connections are made using atorque wrench set to 28 mN.On the floorc for switchboards comprising up to threeunits, the four corners of the switchboardmust be secured to the floor using:v M8 bolts (not supplied) screwed into nutsset into the floor using a sealing pistol;v screw rods grouted into the floor;c for switchboards comprising more thanthree units, the number and position offixing points depends on local criteria(earthquake withstand capacities, etc.).Each unit may be fixed as necessary.c position of fixing holes b depends on thewidth of units:
