Equity Markets Round Up: January 2019

• Globally,Januarywasasignificantrisk-onmonth,onewhereriskassetsgotaboosttoformaminiV-shapedrecovery.Thechangeinmonetarypolicytrajectoryreducedworriesofarecessioninducedbyrapidtighteningoffinancialconditions.TheUSFedkeptratesunchangedasexpectedbutturneddovishinmakingseveralqualitativechangesi.e.achangeinitsinterestratestanceto“patient”from“furthergradualincreases”.TheUS-Chinatradetalksprogressed,drivenbyanintentbyeithersidetothrashoutadealdespitewidegapsonstrategicmatters(security&cybertheft,forcedtransferoftechnology,barrierstomarketaccess,intellectualpropertyissuesetc.).

• Whiletheglobalequitymarketsfaredwelloverthemonth(TheMSCIEM(USD)indexwasup8.73%),sentimentforIndianequities was impacted by a mixed earnings season for 3QFY19 (autos and NBFCs struggled) and investor concerns in companieswithperceivedlapsesincorporategovernanceorinafewcaseswheretherewassignificantsharepledgingbypromoters.Midcapsandsmallcapsstruggledinthisenvironmentofinvestorspreferringsafety.

• Retaildemandforautoindustry,althoughimprovingfromDecemberlevels(accordingtomanagementcommentary)isstillmuted.Mostofthebankswhichhavedeclaredresultssofar(bothPSUsandprivatesector)havehadlowerslippagesandimprovedassetquality.Mostconsumercompanieshavehaddecentunitvolumegrowthduringthequarter.Thecementcompaniescontinuedtoreportgoodvolumenumberswhilepricingremainedunderpressure.ForITcompanies,the3QFY19Resultsweremixedbagwithgrowthbeingbetterthanexpectations,whilemargins lower.Almostno ITcompany inthequarterreportedhealthyrevenuegrowthwithmarginexpansion.Theirmarginsmainlywereimpactedbythehighercostofdeliveryduetosupplysideissuesindevelopedmarkets.

Equity Market Outlook

• Theinterimbudgetwasbroadlyinlinewithmarketexpectationsintermsofdirection.Itproposed(a)increasedfundstransferto land holding farmers and further interest rate subvention to alleviate agrarian stress and (b) tax breaks for people in the lowesttaxslab(c)apensionschemeforworkersintheunorganizedsectorearninguptoRs.15,000permonth(d)supporttorealestatesectorwhichiscurrentlyunderstressaskeymeasures.Thiscouldbepositiveforconsumergoodscompanies,especiallyforitemsofmassmarketconsumption.Ontherevenueside,theestimatesforGSTcollectionandreceiptsfromdivestment(Rs.90,000crores)forFY20appearslightlystretched.TheproposedgrossborrowingfigureforFY20isalsoquitehighandmayimpactlongbondyields.

• ForFY20,agoodportionoftheearningsgrowthisexpectedtocomefromthecorporatefacingbanks.Thesebanksareseeinglowerslippages,havegoodprovisioncoverageandmostagingrelatedprovisionsseemtobebehindthem.Whiletheymayseesomestressontheirpowerexposureandsomewhatontheirretailassets,earningsforthemshouldlikelycomeasexpected.OverallweexpectearningsgrowthforFY20tobebetterthanithasbeenforpast2-3years.

• Weexpectneartermvolatilityonaccountofelectionsandglobalnewsflowaroundgeopoliticalevents,crudeoilpricesandChineseeconomy.AsIndianequitymarketshavecorrectedtheyaretradinginlinewithlongtermvaluationaverages.Assuch,equitymarketsmayofferscopeforreasonablereturnsfromamediumtermperspectivethoughtheyareexpectedtobequitevolatileinthecurrentyear.

• IntheInterimBudgetpresentedonFeb1,theFiscaldeficitforFY19hasbeenrevisedto3.4%fromtheinitial3.3%.AdditionalgrossborrowingofRs36000crforFY19istobeexpected.ThisiscanbenegativeasmarketwasnotexpectinganyfreshsupplyforremainingperiodofFY19.

• ForFY20,thegrossborrowingispeggedatRs7.09lakhcroreascomparedtoRs5.7lakhcr(RE)forFY19.Fiscaldeficitispeggedat3.4%forFY20,alittlehigherthanmarketexpectations.Posttheseannouncementsgiltpriceshavefallenandyieldshaverisen.

AUM - AUM or assets under management refers to the recent / updated cumulative market value of investments managed by a mutual fund oranyinvestmentfirm.
