CustomizationSkills: Even combat demons can be darkly charis-matic and the template skills suggest this: lies falleasily off their lips, they love to ferret out secrets, and they can match pointed jibes with the bestinsult comics. Additional skills are will usually beKnowledge or Profession skills but for the mostpart demons love being out and about in the physi-cal world: climbing, jumping, any form of activeskill is also appropriate for them. They could con-ceivably have many varied abilities and unlikemany other supernatural creatures they love mod-ern technology. Its not unusual to see a demonic-influenced person who knows about computers orenjoys riding motorcycles.

Demonic creatures are also known for knowingmany languages, especially ones that are extinct orsecret.

Feats: Most demonic feats revolve around combatbut that doesnt have to be the case. Some demonsare excellent liars and like to adopt a pleasing shape:Attractive suits them, as does Fame and (if using theoptional rules) some form of material Wealth.Various Detects and additional Immunities (especial-ly Aging, Poison, Fire and Exhaustion) are also wel-come. Four points are left on the template to put inalmost anything.

Most demonic characters are going to be either ahuman harboring some form of demonic power, pos-sessed by one or more spirits, or an actual human-demon get or fusion. Most will have the IdentityChange feat, allowing them to switch back and forthfrom a mostly human guise to one that has one ormore demonic qualities including rams horns, hugebat-like wings, rough pebbled skin, different color-ings, and a tail.

Some demonic beings like to form cults or find that acult has formed around them. They use their charis-ma to sway people one way or another, and so mighthave Minions or even a Sidekick. A demon-bloodedsorcerer will certainly have an occult-basedHeadquarters, complete with vast library of mysticlore, a trophy room for his kindred defeated in battle, and a secure magical workshop.

Powers and Devices: Demonic beings tend not todepend on devices of any kind; they have their owninnate abilities and those serve them best. A demonicentity, a possessed human, and a human-demonfusion: all of these can possess almost any minorpower they wish. Demons and their offspring are sosteeped in mystical energy that any form of classifi-cation beyond the overly broad is almost hopeless.

The template presented above is fairly combat-ori-ented, since thats the nature of many demons, but itdoes not have to be that way. More mysticallyinclined demons will usually have the Sorcery power

at some level, while those driven more by guile willup Obscure and add Invisibility, or Intangibility tothe mix. Shapeshift is also an excellent choice, usual-ly bought like so: Shapeshift +5 (Extra: Exact;Flaw: Only Humanoid; Source: Mystical; Cost: 2pp;Total: 10pp).

Ability Scores: Demons typically are strong, toughand devilishly charismatic. Some, though, especiallythe ones who have the Sorcery power will be vastlymore intelligent: switch Strength/Intelligence andCharisma/Wisdom.

Weaknesses: Demonic beings, it could be said, areflaws in the very nature of the cosmos. Its not sur-prising that most if not all carry some form of weak-ness.

Transformation: A very common demonic weaknessespecially for a demonic spirit bound to a humanhost with neither being happy about the situation. Insuch a situation the human host will try to keep thedemonic spirit suppressed for as long as possibleuntil his willpower simply fails or he loses concen-tration. Then the demon can burst free to do as itwishes. A human/demon hybrid might have thepotential for a much more monstrous form that isrevealed when he encounters certain materials suchas silver, holy wafers, or artifacts of pure evil.

Vulnerability or Susceptible are both good choices,as demons often have some very well known andspecific weaknesses to certain materials. Holy itemsof any kind top this list, even extending to holyground. A demon with Susceptibility will start toburn on holy ground; one with Vulnerability will findhe cannot defend himself in certain ways (usuallyones that make direct use of black magic). Silver, cold iron, sunlight, and prayer beads the list goeson and on. Demons serving other dark gods mighthave an entirely different suite of weaknesses.

Disturbing is almost a prerequisite for demon charac-ters, usually manifesting as chills, aches, suddenmigraines, psychic flashes of horrific scenes, hearingdistant whispering voices, or sudden violent cramps.

  • Archetypes: devil Quirks are also a very good choice, especially forhumans that are willingly or not hosting a demonicspirit. Sudden violent swings of emotion are notunknown. Obsessions are very common, usuallyinvolving things of a certain type (clocks, artwork, music) or a particular group of people.

Example Demon:MorningstarJason Morning was raised in the very lap of luxury. His father was a rich and powerful industrialist andhead of a multinational corporation. His mother wasa senior partner in a New York law firm. They weredistant parents for the most part, kept apart from himand each other by the strain of their respectivecareers but he at least thought they loved him. Hesaw them several times a month individually andfour times a year they would take a family vacationoff to some exotic locale.

Jason never really had much connection with whatnormal kids did, so he thought it was only a little oddthat at some point during these vacations his parentswould wake him in the middle of the night and theywould all go outside. Dad would build a huge bonfireand sing to it, while Jason stood beside his mother. Then she would unwrap a knife and cut him on thearm, wipe the blood off, then pass the cloth to herhusband, who would then throw it in the fire. Thenall three would walk around the fire, saying a chantthat Jason joined as he got older.

His mother and father swore him to secrecy about thefire and the words they said, but Jason became curi-ous. Years later his idle curiosity finally led him tohis great-grandfathers collection of occult tomes, oldblasphemous books that revealed to him a terriblesecret. With trembling hands he stood with his backto a mirror, one hand holding another mirror so hecould see the back of his own head. He lifted up thehair from his neck and saw the symbol there, faintand small but still noticeable He was property.

When he turned 18, his parents introduced him to a

    Devils Workshop Page 3

beautiful girl, the daughter of one of his fathersbusiness associates he was told. They slowly grewcloser even as Jason began to have severe doubtsabout his family and what secrets they were keeping. At 19 he was wed to the girl. A year later he was inmourning when she died in childbirth; his son diedwith her. He was devastated by the twin loss and hisparents seemingly indifference to it finally drove awedge between them. He declared his intention tostudy in Europe that summer and surprisingly therewas no outcry.

Jason fell in love again that summer and wasengaged soon thereafter. His parents insisted on agrand party to celebrate his 21st birthday and hisengagement; he demurred but his fianc insisted. Heagreed to meet them one last time. Everything wasperfect until the night of his birthday, when hedrank too much at the party and awoke bound nakedto an icy stone on a mountaintop. His mother andfather walked around the stone chanting the phrasesfrom his childhood, and then smiled to see he wasawake.

They were amused at his horror and they smiled evenmore at the look on his face when his fianc cameinto view, dressed in robes and carrying a familiarknife.

You, his father said as he tested Jasons bonds, are part of a bargain that was made years ago. Mybusiness was failing, and your mother was about toflunk out of law school. We were drunk and high, and decided that we wanted to be successful morethan anything else in the world. Wed prayed like ourparents taught us, but nothing ever came of it. Untilwe prayed not to God but to the devil. And ourprayers were answered. For three times seven yearswe would have all the world had to offer just for theasking. And the end of that time we would surrenderour immortal souls to the demon Balherath wewere young and twenty-one years sounded like for-ever to me. But your mother, bless her dark heart, was wiser than I and argued us a better bargain. Wewould surrender our souls or the soul of our firstborn.

    Thats you, son.

And so we are here, twenty-one years later, torenew our contract for another twenty-one years. Now dont worry about us afterwards, either; yourfirst-born son is still alive and well and living inEurope until he is twenty-one and can serve as ourproxy just as you are going to, and then his sonafter him well, you get the idea.

Jasons mind tried to grasp all hed been told. Thecold glee in his parents eyes was all the confirma-tion he needed. He felt his fianc begin to carveThe Mark on his chest, and his parents chant roseto a scream.

The demon Balherath appeared to claim his dueand plunged his hand into Jasons chest. Jason felta wrenching tug as the demon grappled his soul...then Balherath screamed and recoiled. Jasonlooked up to see his fianc wiping the sacrificialknife on her robes from where shed cut his par-ents throats. The demon turned on her, but sheheld up a thin leather scroll. The ones you bar-gained with are dead, as is Jasons first-born. But Icarry his seed. Grant me their boon, and the childwill be yours.

The demon grinned at the womans audacity, thendid grant her the boon. The courts would find thatthe Mornings died in a skiing accident, and alltheir worldly wealth was left to this woman. Sheleft Jason chained to the stone, certain he woulddie from exposure within the hour.

But he did not. The claws that pierced his soul hadchanged him and granted him a portion ofBalheraths might. When he awoke he freed him-self, then stumbled down the mountain to begin hisfight against the dark forces that he now knewinfested the world. And to reclaim his son beforethe demon reappears

Quote: Theres going to be Hell to pay.

Personality: Jason is driven and intense, which isquite a change from the callow and nave boy he

was before his change. Hes quiet, professional, and shuns the company of normal people as muchas possible. He has two goals: kill his former loverand rescue his son. Everything else is incidental tothese two things.

Powers and Tactics: Jason typically uses hischarm to infiltrate a cult or organization connectedwith his fianc. Once hes sure which people heneeds to take care of, he changes to his demonicaspect and simply punches them until they stopmoving. Hes had no formal training in any sort oftactics or strategy, so for now hes relied on luckand brawn to get him this far.

Appearance: Jason is a strikingly handsomeyoung man who could be in his late teens or earlytwenties. He has black hair, pale skin, and intensegray eyes with a haunted look about them. He nor-mally wears American Sloppy casual clothing; astained t-shirt, jeans, sneakers and a black short-sleeved overshirt. He usually has a slightly scruffyappearance and goes unshaven for a day or so atleast. When he allows his demonic aspect toemerge he grows about a foot, his skin becomes adark gray, his eyes blaze crimson, and his teeth andears become pointed.

Campaign Use: Jason can introduce an occulttwist into a kidnapping storyline, or he can contactthe other heroes to help him in taking down hisformer fianc; she has some very powerful demon-ic abilities of her own, now, and a respectable cultfollowing. Hes also good for an evil behind thescenes of normality storyline. Because of his dis-turbing aspect, he may approach the PCs to dosome things for him involving normal people.
