An exciting new range of organic infant food is set to transform Ireland’sbaby food market. Organic Little One, the brainchild of mum-of-twoNiamh O’Dwyer, originally from Ballincollig, has launched a range of100% organic chilled purées and meals.
Niamh said, “It is recognised worldwide that the first 1,000 days of lifefrom conception to a child’s 2nd birthday offers a unique opportunity toshape a healthier future. With this in mind, when weaning my boys Iwanted them to enjoy natural and tasty fresh foods.
“When I trawled through the available baby foods in the supermarketaisles, I could not find a freshly prepared convenient baby food anddiscovered the choice was either to make more nutritious, fresh baby foodat home or buy shelf stable, over processed jars. I started making my ownpurées and quickly found myself spending all day Saturday makingbatches of purées and baby foods. Life can be hectic, and as family time isso precious, this inspired me to create Organic Little One.
“I come from a family business and it has always been my ambition torun my own business. Before I had children of my own I had neverimagined that my business would be baby food, but here it is and here Iam. I have listened to what mums want and Organic Little One fills thegap providing, simple, just like homemade organic purées and babyfoods”.

Gardaí first to leave CourtbrackYes it’s true, it was the Gardaí that led the way at Courtbrack VintageSociety’s Annual Vintage Tractor and Car Road Run on Sunday May 18th,with SOS 24 Hour Recovery bringing up the rear. There were blue lightsflashing and sirens blaring as the local Gardaí led the vintage processionthat wound its way slowly through the beautiful countryside. A great crowdgathered at Courtbrack Cross to see the tractors and cars off, with plentymore onlookers all along the 19 mile route, especially when the vintageconvoy made its way through Blarney village! While the day started outwet, the weather cleared up just in time for the start of the run, and let’s behonest, it would take a lot more than a little rain to stop the Courtbrackcrew! The Club were delighted with the turn out on the day, which was
deemed another great success, and which concluded with the presentationof the James O’Donoghue Perpetual Trophy. As luck would have it, the cupwas won by well-known local man, Jeremy Murphy, who was driving hisvintage American muscle car, a beautiful Pontiac Firebird. Of course, theday would never have succeeded without a huge team effort from the localcommunity, there was enough food to feed a small army! The Club wouldlike to thank everyone who took part in the Road Run and those whohelped out in any way. That’s not it for 2014 for the Club though, they are organising the

Young Social Innovators (YSI), through itsprogrammes and platforms, enables youngpeople to grapple with difficult social issues, advocating reform and advancing change. Each year, thousands of young people aresupported to explore social issues that concernthem, explore and come up with a variety ofresponses to these. In this way, YSI builds social capital and helps youngpeople create a fairer and more caring Ireland. Each YSI group tacklestheir own issue of social concern through a project they set up.Students at Ballincollig Community School include YSI as a 4th year
module and 10 students are in the Advocate group ‘Link-In’, of whichthere are only 25 groups in IrelandThe reason they picked this project is because they wanted to tackle

Brighter, Whiter Smiles! Our Smile is often the first thing others notice. Whiter, brighter teeth can give usmore confidence and make that smile all the more ready to appear. A beautifulsmile is now much more readily achieved than ever before.
The first stage to obtaining a beautiful smile is to ensure that the teeth and gumsare healthy. Visit your dentist regularly for a check up so that any cavities or gumproblems can be treated early before they turn into bigger problems. The soonerproblems are detected the simpler they are to treat and the less noticeable they willappear. Everybody with PRSI cover and a Medical Card (over 16 years old) isentitled to a free dental check up once a year.
There are many causes of tooth discolouration. The most common are smoking, coffee, tea and red wine. An extensive scale and polish can sometimes remove themajority of these stains without any further treatment required. Deeper moreextensive discolouration however may require further treatment such as toothwhitening.
Tooth Whitening is suitable for most people as long as the teeth and gums arehealthy. So called whitening products are available in the supermarkets andPharmacies, these have been found to have limited affects on discolouration due tothe amount of bleaching agent contained. EU directives have limited the strength ofwhitening agents sold over the counter to less than a tenth of that which can beprescribed by your dentist.
The steps involved in tooth whitening are simple. Impressions of your teeth aretaken by your dentist from which special custom fitting trays (like thinmouthguards) are made. Whitening gel is then placed in your custom trays whichfit snugly over your teeth. The whitening gel breaks down and oxygen ‘dissolves’the stains inside your teeth. You can wear the trays when you want to, over night orany time during the day. The whitening gel is available in different strengths andyour dentist can recommend the best product to suit your teeth and lifestyle.Everybody’s teeth will whiten at different rates but on average excellent results areobtained after about 5-14 days. The results will last indefinitely although can berefreshed when required if restaining occurs (coffee/tea/smoking!)
Clinical studies have shown that bleaching using this method is safe for teethand gums. Aminority of people may experience temporary sensitivity to hot andcold.
Students from secondary schools in Cork City continue to support andrun the SHARE complex in Sheare's St., as well as other locations, which provides housing and community care for the elderly. Thesupport of the parents of the students led to the formation of theSHARE MOTHERS, and this week two of those volunteers receivedCork Persons of the Month to mark their work. Paula Kelleher andElizabeth Bermingham have organised Bingo and many such socialactivities, over many years, for the residents of the SHARE complex, plus users of the Day Care facility.

On Monday morning January 7th 1884, in the infant school inconnection with the Convent, Mrs. Mahony, St. Helen’s, gathered anumber of children together, and presented them with useful andelegant gifts. Forty-five of the children are under six years of age,and attend the infant school; the others belong to a sewing classwhich Miss Breen (Mrs. Mahony’s niece) takes charge of, herself.Specimens of their sewing were exhibited, and they were highlycreditable to both teacher and pupils. After each child had chosen anice present, they got a refreshment of good things, which theyseemed to enjoy exceedingly. Then the infants sang several songs; itwas quite a treat to hear so many young voices join in so heartily.Last, though not least was the heaps of warm clothing (made by Mrs.Mahony and the Sisters who reside in Blarney convent) distributedby Mrs. Mahony and Miss Breen, each child receiving from one tothree articles according to their circumstances. There were jackets, dresses, shawls, mufflers, pinafores, and petticoats made of Blarneytweed and flannel, and other underclothing.A few days ago Miss Breen held a sewing competition amongst
the girls, and the successful competitors were awarded handsomework-boxes, etc. There were also some valuable prizes given to thosegirls who wore the neatest patched clothes, Mrs. Mahony havinggiven previous instructions that the girls were to appear in theirordinary school attire. Before separating, the children expressed theirthanks by cheering heartily for the Rev. Mother and Sisters and Mr.and Mrs. Mahony, and Miss Bren, who join hand-in-hand in everycharitable undertaking.
St. Ann’s Hill Hydropathic EstablishmentOn Saturday 5th January 1884 a very enjoyable evening was spent bythe guests and visitors who crowded the theatre of the establishmentto witness a performance of amateur Christy’s Minstrels. Theprogramme was of the usual kind, the first part consisting of songs, and the second of a variety entertainment. Amongst the songs wemay mention “The Old Log Cabin”, sung by Mr. J.A. Davis, “Put Mein my Little Bed” by L. West and “Her First Name is Hannah”, byMr. H.A. West, as specially deserving commendation. In the secondpart Mr. Stokes very clever banjo playing and singing, Mr. P. Cook’sdancing (encored) and a farce, Stocks up and Stocks down” byMessrs. Stokes and H.A. West were the principal items.
Blarney Petty Sessions January 10th 1899The Guardians of Cork Union sought an order against Mary Hegartyfor the closing up of a house in Kerry Pike, occupied by John Dalyon the ground that it is unfit for human habitation. Mr. A. Blakeappeared to prosecute.Dr. D.J. Flynn stated that the house was in a most filthy condition.
The roofs were bad; ventilation was bad, and, in fact, in such a dirtystate was the place that it was even fit for cattle. The place should beclosed completely.Mr Blake said the reason the Guardians were particular in this and
other cases was that there had been two or three of death from typhusin the district. He took the trouble of enquiring from the doctor andhe found that the deaths were not due to an epidemic but to the factthat the disease was imported from Cork by a person who had beenvisiting an afflicted friend there, but such nuisances did not tend toprevent the spread of the disease. The Chairman said the Guardians did not seem to take any means
to cure the state of affairs, by notices.Mr. James Barry, sub-sanitary officer, said the defendant had been
noticed several times and, as a result of one of the notices, the wallsof the house had been repaired some time ago. Mr. Blake respectfullysubmitted that that was a matter for the Guardians and not for theBench, whose only duty was to try the case before them.
The Chairman remarked that the Bench on wanted to bring before theGuardians the real state of affairs. A penalty of 6d was imposed andthe order sought, made.In the case against the same owner with regard to the house
occupied by Daniel O’Leary and against Charles Buckley, Dr. Flynnsaid the facts were much the same as in the first case. In both casesthere were heaps of manure and piggeries close to the houses. Asimilar order was made but the costs were not given in Buckley’scase.A like order was sought against John Ruby. Dr. Flynn stated that in
one room, 10 feet high, 141/2 feet long, by 61/2 feet broad with onesmall window and scarcely any ventilation, there were ten of a familysleeping. Ruby said he had already put in four re-presentation formsto the Board of Guardians for a labourer’s cottage but had not yet gotone.Mr. Pratt said the Guardians often gave cottages to those who
really did not require them. The Chairman said this was so, and this appeared to be a very
urgent case.Mr Blake said that there were several people in the Blarney district
who were not agricultural labourers occupying labourers’ cottages.Mr. Barry remarked that Ruby kept his house very clean. The Benchimposed a fine of 6d, and ordered the defendant to find moreaccommodation for his family.
The above items were printed in the Cork Examiner newspapersof the time.

May brought a rise in night temperatures andeven a few sunny days! The regular maintenancework of grass cutting, strimming, edging and
weed control is now taking up a large portion of our available time and itreally is a question of juggling jobs to try and keep things tidy. Although itis hectic, it is also the time of year when you start to see a lot of results fromyour winter and spring projects. Our rhododendron and azalea beds have been amazing so far this year.
There is still good colour there and it’s well worth popping in to see them.We have planted huge numbers throughout the grounds over the last threeyears and it’s very satisfying to see them starting to fill out. The four newBelgian beds have flowered well for their first year.We are in the process of planting up all of our display beds with mixed
bedding and have hung our hanging baskets. In the beds we generally use amix of begonias, petunias, lobelia and geraniums. The secret to a gooddisplay is regular watering and feeding. We use phostrogen plant food everysecond week through the growing season. We also use the largest basketspossible as they are so prone to drying out.The glasshouses are looking full and we have peaches, nectarines,
apricots, grapes, strawberries and assorted vegetables all coming alongnicely. There was good bloom in our new heritage apple orchard this year,so we are hoping to improve on last year’s crop. The Fern Garden is also coming along nicely, and all of the tree ferns are
currently throwing up new fronds. We have recently planted out around 300new ferns. These will significantly add to the overall lush look of the gardenas they mature. Some of you will have been observing the development of our new
garden area in the lower rock close. This is to be called ‘The Garden of theSeven Sisters’ and its centrepiece is a Neolithic style stone circle featuringseven standing stones and two fallen. This being Blarney there is a greatstory as to how this came about. The gardens will be gradually plantedaround this central feature, which has already become a focal point fortourists.Jobs for June will include sowing outdoor vegetables, pruning grape
vines and pinching out tomatoes and cucumbers side shoots and start to feedwith seaweed feed or similar. Spray the potatoes for blight if necessary.Keep an eye out for pests as the weather warms up. We introduce biologicalcontrols for aphids and mealybug in our glasshouses. Spray roses forblackspot and aphids or use soap suds if it’s a small infestation. Plant outbedding if not already done; keep up to speed with watering both in andoutside. Newly planted or potted plants are especially prone to stress fromdrying out.Our annual Summer Garden Fair ‘Blarney in Bloom’ is on the 12th of
July. There will be a lot of additional features this year, with a programmeof gardening talks from expert speakers, interactive arts and crafts displays, specialist plant nurseries, the birds of prey returning, live music andchildren’s entertainment and a hog roast. It is all in aid of the Irish GuideDogs for the Blind and should be a great family day out. Anyone wishing totake part please drop me a line at: [email protected]

Eithne Buckley set up Twoheartsmeet DatingAgency with her partner Daniel McIntyre backin 2011 when some of their friends were findingit hard to find a partner. She had completedcourses in Life Coaching and Counselling Skillsand decided to put them to good use and set up abadly needed service in the Munster area. Eventhough they are only three years in businessthey already have four engaged couples and ahigh proportion of clients are together with ayear or longer. The members of the dating agency range
from late 20’s to early 70’s and are single, separated, divorced or widowed and from allwalks of life. Eithne meets and profiles clientswho want to join up. This entails a relaxed chatover a coffee for about an hour to get to know
you and find out what you are looking for in apartner. Everyone brings along proof of ID andaddress, as well as an up to date photo. Theservice is totally private and confidential. When not out meeting potential clients,
Eithne is busy putting matches together orphoning matched members to see how they aregetting on with the introductions she has madefor them. This way she builds up a rapport withpeople over time and gets to understand whatworks and doesn’t work for them. She joinedCork Chamber this year so there are networkmeetings and other functions to attend. It’s allvery varied and interesting. Eithne feelsprivileged to be doing this work, especiallywhen two people find love together whose pathswould not otherwise have crossed.
A lot of people who join up are happy enoughwith other areas of their life but miss thecompany of a special person, especially atweekends when their friends and family arewith their own families or partners. As it isbecoming more difficult for unattached peopleto meet potential partners out socialising,Twoheartsmeet offer a personalised and totallyconfidential service and a safer alternative toonline dating. If you are looking for a long term partnerand have been unsuccessful up to now usingconventional methods, or if you knowsomeone in this situation, check outTwoheartsmeet.ie or phone 085 7742444 formore information on how to become amember.

Congratulations Rang 2 on receiving your First HolyCommunion recently from all the staff and pupils of ScoilChroi Iosa.
Junior Infants trip to thepost office. In Ms.McHugh's Junior Infantsclass, they have beenlearning about the postoffice. They visited our localPost Office and metMarguerite, the postmistress, and posted a letter to Susan, our secretary. The children were delighted when Susan came to theirclassroom the very next day to show them their letter had arrived!
European Day Celebrations. As Scoil Chroí Íosa’s motto is ‘Ar scáth achéile a mhairimid’ they decided to celebrate European diversity in a veryspecial way. They began by using our special European handshake toempahsise that the E.U. fosters a sense of community between all the 28countries involved, and had great fun singing and dancing to the song‘We’re all in this together’. The Blue Star Committee, made up ofrepresentatives from each class, brought an array of European basedprojects, art work and information to the halla to showcase the work oftheir class. Noelle O’ Connell Executive Director of European MovementIreland, a former pupil of Scoil Íosagáin Girls School, visited to see thewonderful work. A vast array of amazing displays and projects wereavailable, not to mention some tasty nibbles from France and Poland, special shoes called clogs from Holland, and clay models of European seacreatures. A huge thank you to all who helped out and visited on EuropeanDay. The school will continue their hard work for the next few weeks inthe hope that they will earn their Blue Star flag.
Rang 3 got involved in some planting in the Scoil Chroì Íosa poly tunnel.Pumpkins, chives and onions were all set earlier this week.
Masterchef has taken Ms Crowley's class bystorm! Over the past few weeks children have beencooking up tasty treats for the class in the hope ofbeing the next Rachel Allen and earning thecoveted prize of Master chef winner 2014. Theorganisation and enthusiasm from the children hasbeen phenomenal. Some of the tasty treats cookedup so far include cupcakes, pancakes, swissroll, cookies as well as a victoria sponge. Ms Crowley and Ms O’Keeffe have avery difficult job now to determine who shall be given the title.
6th Class Graduation to U.C.C. Both 6th classes went on a tour of U.C.Con 19th May. It was a very enjoyable day. The day started with a tour ofthe campus which included the Presidents garden, the Quadrangle, theHonan Chapel and the Observatory. All the children wore gowns. RhysO’Connor was chosen as Prefect for the day and he led the tour. Alongwith Cathal O' Connor, his Vice Prefect, they did a great job. The dayended with Lunch in the Main Rest as well as small Graduation ceremony, presenting their certificates.
The Parents Association have been doinga super job of organising the Walk onWednesday initiative. The children, alongwith some parents have been assembling at adesignated meeting area and walking to bothschools every Wednesday mornings, even onthe wet mornings. As we are an activeschool, this is a great incentive to keep thechildren as active as possible. Let us keep itgoing right up to the summer holidays.
Senior Infants enjoyed a recent trip to theBlarney Castle to see all the beautifulflowers.
