MISSIONThe Muskegon Museum of Art,

founded on a tradition of aesthetic

excellence, is committed to fostering

the life-long study and appreciation

of the visual arts by strengthening,

preserving, and exhibiting its

collections; offering a wide range

of traditional and contemporary

exhibitions; stimulating learning and

creativity through diverse public

and educational programming; and

enhancing community involvement

and support in a safe, accessible,

and welcoming environment.

DIRECTOR’SMESSAGE

To say that this past year turned out

much different than we had planned

would be an understatement.

Staff planning for each exhibition and

program is meticulous and often put

into place more than two years out

before an exhibition opens.

I am so proud of how the Muskegon

Museum of Art staff and Trustees

turned on a dime last spring to

take the steps necessary to keep the MMA safe and moving forward

despite having no clear roadmap into the unknown. The support given

to us by our members and patrons was inspiring. My head spins when

I look back on the incredible variety and amount of online content this

staff generated for every audience imaginable.

In June, we were able to reopen with safeguards in place, but Glass:

Treasures from the Permanent Collection did not open until July. And,

even though the galleries are open, we move forward without the

variety of public events we are known for.

This Annual Report covers the MMA’s fiscal year from July 1, 2019

through June 30, 2020. During this time, the MMA presented 17

exhibitions of a great variety, including our 91st Michigan Contemporary

Art Exhibition and Excellence in Fibers, a spectacular fiber arts show.

Additionally, we brought some significant artworks into the MMA’s

permanent collection.

The bottom line: Because of you, we are doing well and looking

forward to an exciting future.

Thanks for your support!

Sincerely,

Kirk Hallman, Executive Director

The Muskegon Museum of Art, in concurrence with the International Council of Museums’ definition of a museum, is a permanent institution that is dedicated to the service of society and its development; is open and accessible to the public; and acquires, conserves, researches, communicates, and exhibits, for the purpose of study, education, and enjoyment, material evidence of humanity and its environment.

The Muskegon Museum of Art has been continuously accredited by the American Alliance of Museums since 1989.

The fiscal year ending this June 30

will likely go down in the Muskegon

Museum of Art’s history as one of its

most challenging. For public safety and

health, the Museum had to close for

several weeks and implement safe and

sanitary visiting protocols, including social

distancing, in order to welcome back

members and visitors. So, the year from an

attendance and financial perspective was

difficult.

But through all the turmoil and uncertainty, the Muskegon Museum of

Art survived and, in many instances, thrived!

• The Museum reopened with a magnificent exhibition of the MMA’s

finest collections.

• In particular, the glass exhibition is simply awesome.

• New gifts and acquisitions were accessioned into the permanent

collection.

• The Museum staff were able to secure grants from various sources

to avoid staff reductions and continue providing services.

• Increased emphasis was placed on social media to share the

Museum’s treasures.

• Special efforts had to be made to secure the MMA’s treasured

collections.

• Critical to our ongoing success, our members, donors, and

sponsors have continued to be wonderfully supportive.

The Trustees and staff have had many challenges. Adjustments have

been made in every area of operations. Most importantly, the MMA is

alive and well.

The Trustees are all looking forward to “Shaping Our Future!”

Sincerely,

Frank Bednarek, Chair

EXHIBITIONSExhibitions took full advantage of our recent gallery upgrades to offer new visuals and visions during 2019-2020. Our ambitious year featured 17 exhibitions, with 15 organized by the Muskegon Museum of Art staff.

SUMMER 2019Summer saw the premier of Rising Voices: The Bennett Prize® for Women Figurative Realist Painters. In collaboration with Steven Alan Bennett, Dr. Elaine Melotti Schmidt, and The Pittsburgh Foundation, the MMA was honored to organize the inaugural exhibition for The Bennett Prize. Rising Voices featured 29 paintings by ten finalists chosen from a field of 647 entrants. Rising Voices is currently on tour to several venues around the country and in 2021, we will present the second round of The Bennett Prize.

Replay: The Exhibition was a celebration of American Pop and Geek culture by a select group of artists. Replay featured amazing large pieces crafted from LEGO® Bricks by The Collective, a team of collaborative sculptors, in response to additional paintings and photographs from the exhibition.

Lights, Camera, Rock n’ Roll: The Music Photography of Paul Jendrasiak captured the spectacle of live concerts in West Michigan, vividly portrayed over 25 years, by photographer Paul Jendrasiak. And, in a companion exhibition, Laurence Juber, former guitarist for Paul McCartney & Wings, displayed his photography of his time with Paul and Linda McCartney as well as performing a solo show in the MMA Frey Auditorium.

Pictures of the Best Kind showcased the incredible permanent collection of the MMA, including many new artworks recently acquired.

FALL 2019Fall 2019 saw the MMA highlighting Michigan artists with the newly rebranded 91st Michigan Contemporary Art Exhibition, our annual juried statewide show, along with The Land, an exhibition featuring paintings and prints by two Grand Valley State University faculty artists, Bill Hosterman and Ed Wong-Ligda, that responded to perceptions of the natural landscape.

Undying Traditions: Memento Mori presented artwork from a long tradition that encourages reflection of mortality.

WINTER 2020Winter saw Excellence in Fibers V, an annual international juried fiber arts competition organized by the Fiber Art Network. Hundreds of artists from around the world submitted striking examples of textile and fiber based pieces including sculpture, tapestry, jewelry, costume and clothing together in an impressive display. Thirty-nine works from artists around North America were juried by fiber artist Amy DiPlacido, professor Karen Hampton, and former editor-in-chief of American Craft magazine, Monica Moses.

This exhibition was accompanied by The Art of Making: Sculpture and Fiber from the Permanent Collection of the MMA.

In January, the MMA recognized the artistic talent stemming from within our state with 20 for 20: Celebrating Michigan Illustrators. We were thrilled to exhibit the work of both nationally- recognized household names in children’s literature along with emerging illustrators from the state.

THANK YOU, EXHIBITION UNDERWRITERS Our exhibitions and programming would not be possible without the underwriting of our 2019-2020 sponsors. Through their generosity, we continue to bring to our West Michigan audiences (and beyond!) new perspectives and amazing visual art. Thank you to:

SPRING & SUMMER 2020The MMA’s spring season launch coincided exactly with the onset of the COVID-19 closure. As it did with everyone, this difficult time presented special challenges to museum staff to deliver content to the public. We were able to present our annual countywide student art exhibition, Expressions 2020, online and continued to share our permanent collection digitally as well as interactive content for all ages and interests.

We reopened on June 23 with multiple safety measures in place including Plexiglas barriers, touchless faucets, distancing markers, gallery occupancy limits, enhanced daily cleaning, and, unfortunately, no public events. As of this writing these measures continue.

Our June reopening saw the premier of Shaping the Future, Celebrating the Past, our all-museum permanent collection exhibitions featuring the highlights of our collection in The Bettye Clark Cannon Gallery; The Arts of Japan; A Living Legacy: Modern and Contemporary Art; Graphic: 19th- and 20th-Century Prints and Watercolors; The Artist’s Lens: 20th- and 21st-Century Photography; and From Dürer to Rembrandt: Five Centuries of Art and Faith.

We had planned to premier Glass: Treasures from the Permanent Collection in May but, because of the closure, it could not open to the public until July 2020.

A side effect of the closure also meant the hiatus of the annual 92nd Michigan Contemporary Art Exhibition originally planned for the fall of 2020. Instead, the permanent collection exhibitions were extended into the fall.

HIGHLIGHTED EXHIBITION PROGRAMMINGAmong all of the programs that were held at the Muskegon Museum of Art this past fiscal year, these are our personal favorites.

Undying Traditions: Memento Mori brought together works from across the Unites States that explored themes of death and earthly pleasure. The exhibition featured works by twelve artists; it included paintings, photography and sculpture all in the rich tradition of “memento mori” (which translates to ” remember death”). In theme, we hosted an Open Mic night with the

local poet Kumasi Mac alongside his co-hosts Kwame Kamau and Mia Monét. The three presented poetic and musical pieces from their own bodies of work centered on the theme of “memento mori” and invited the audience to share their works as well. The evening was intimate and powerful, to say the least. Undying Traditions: Memento Mori also afforded the opportunity for us to work with Tom Harryman. A local Bluffton resident and Muskegon Community College professor, Harryman performed his signature one-man play Passion & Perversity: The Inner Chambers of Edgar Allan Poe. The riveting performance examined the inner workings of Edgar Allan Poe through his letters, stories, and poems.

Rising Voices: The Bennett Prize, both a prize and exhibition, highlighted the juried works of ten women from across the nation. The Bennett Prize was created by collectors Steven Alan Bennett and Dr. Elaine Melotti Schmidt, of San Antonio, Texas, to propel the careers of women figurative realist painters in the U.S. As a way to provide our MMA patrons with a hands-on experience in relation to the artistic creation of the 2D figure, we held a beginner-friendly figure drawing workshop with Grand Rapids figurative painter Angelica Hay. During the workshop, Hay provided an in-gallery drawing

experience with a live model for patrons. Like Undying Traditions, Rising Voices: The Bennett Prize also allowed us to work with a local performance artist. Actress Kimberly Harsch, from Whitehall, Michigan, performed her original production, 42, alongside her daughter, Jacy Harsch. The two-person play follows a 42-year-old mother as she exposes her own bias through both lighthearted and tragic memories to her teenage daughter. The play emphasizes generational blindness, and displays the negative effects society can have on young women.

DOCENTSThe Muskegon Museum of Art docents never cease to amaze us. As a group, they are lively and welcoming, constantly connecting with each other, staff, students, and patrons alike. As a volunteer group, they are dedicated and creative. The docents of the MMA are always looking for ways to do more and elevate education within our walls. They truly strive to make the MMA experience unlike any other.

This past year the docents led a total of 1,270 individuals on MMA tours, hosted an educational trip to Detroit, planned their annual holiday luncheon, led a book club, visited the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts for the West Michigan Docent luncheon, and provided endless support to our Curator of Education.

EXPRESSIONSThis past year marked our 38th annual Expressions student art exhibition. The exhibition was made possible by the Muskegon Area Intermediate School District and Comerica Bank, with additional support from the Michigan Council for the Arts and Cultural Affairs, an affiliate of the National Endowment for the Arts. Although this show was a virtual exhibition this year due to the effects of COVID-19, we were still able to represent fourteen school districts and over 200 K-12 students.

SUPER SATURDAY & #SSFROMHOME

Support for educational programs is provided by the Art Bridges Foundation; Howmet Aerospace Foundation; the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs, an affiliate of the National Endowment for the Arts; the Michigan Humanities council, an affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities; Mercy Health; and Sytsema Funeral & Cremation Services.

Super Saturday, with the support of Howmet Aerospace Foundation, boasted 1,661 attendees despite the effects of COVID-19. Upon making the difficult decision to postpone our physical programming until further notice, we, with the generosity of both Howmet Aerospace and Art Bridges, created #SSfromHome to provide an at-home experience that mimics the beloved Super Saturday program. #SSfromHome provides virtual tours, easy and inexpensive crafts, and a themed film list. As a staff, we are dedicated to keeping our patrons and volunteers healthy and look forward to welcoming you all back when it is safe to do so.

VIRTUAL PROGRAMMING & ONLINE ACTIVITIES As an art museum, the Muskegon Museum of Art has no shortage of creativity and in an effort to keep our patrons engaged and learning about art, we have created a host of virtual programs and online activities. Aside from #SSfromHome, we have developed an online coloring book for families to print for FREE from home, museum alphabet cards that feature works from our permanent collection, created beginner-friendly origami tutorials, and created CHALK IT UP!

The CHALK IT UP! e-program provides families with inspiring chalk art prompts that directly correlate with pieces from our permanent collection. Families have been encouraged to share their creations with us on our social media platforms, as well as stop in during our open hours to see the pieces referenced in person and to pick up FREE chalk bags provided by the MMA with the support of Art Bridges.

COLLECTION REPORT

Working closely with our dedicated Collections Committee, we have again brought significant new works of art into the Muskegon Museum of Art’s celebrated permanent collection. Through purchases and gifts, our collection continues to expand, bringing exciting new perspectives and narratives into our galleries.

GIFTSBy gift, we acquired four striking modern Japanese prints by Hajime Namiki, Kiyoshi Saito, and Tsutomu Shimoyama from Jullie Otterbein of Grand Rapids, expanding our holdings of Japanese art. From an anonymous donor came two watercolors by Dutch artist Herman Frederik Carel ten Kate and from Muriel and David Zandstra two paintings by the fondly- remembered Grand Rapids artist Armand Merizon. From Patricia Knop and Zalman King, in honor of the 100th Anniversary of the Muskegon Museum of Art, came the large oil on panel painting Mary on the Dock at Pickerel Lake by Annabel Livermore. Artist David Cahill donated his watercolor, Tuned Out, to the MMA at the close of our exhibition Undying Traditions: Memento Mori. Finally, through Zolla/Lieberman Gallery of Chicago, the Chicago-based artist Vera Klement donated one of her large semi-abstract paintings.

PURCHASESThrough art fund proceeds and financial gifts, the museum was able to purchase artworks that complement our existing holdings and expand our collection in new directions, creating surprises for our existing audiences and helping to attract new ones. From Rising Voices: The Bennett Prize for Women Figurative Realist Painters we acquired Jenny Morgan’s Crescent, a large figurative work currently traveling the country. Minotaur Reading, by Beth Carter, is an outstanding and dramatic work of art, a life-sized bronze of the mythical character that has transformed the Cannon Gallery experience. Another purchase from an MMA-organized exhibition of contemporary art was Will Wilson’s Alchemy, an intricately detailed painting of a skull accompanied by the tools of the painter’s trade. Lastly, building on our collection of contemporary art and the works of women artists, is Between the Falling in Love Parts, a humorous and playful mixed media painting by prominent Chicago-based artist Phyllis Bramson.

APPRECIATIONSpecial thanks to the donors that made the acquisition of these artworks possible and to the Collections Committee, a body of volunteers that works closely with curatorial staff to shape the direction of our collection:

2019 Festival of TreesIn what has become a local tradition, a small army of volunteers transform our galleries into a festive holiday display and host special events and activities during the last weeks in November. The 14th annual Festival’s theme was “Home for the Holidays.” Trees, wreaths, and other holiday décor created by local designers and sponsored by individuals and organizations in the community created a warm and inviting seasonal environment. Visitors bid on the trees, décor items, and donated gift baskets during the Festival’s on-going silent auction.
