PROPHET RELEASES ON
CUMIN LABELToronto: Orville Prophet, one of the giants inCanadian country music, is currently appear-ing at the Horseshoe Tavern, where he is ex-periencing some of the best crowds in hisshow -biz career. Much of the credit must goto the timely release of his debut single onCaledon "Human Nature" and "You're NotMy Sweetheart Anymore" which is part of thehot new Stone Empire. Country radio person-alities from coast to coast have found ex-cellent listener reaction to both sides whichcould create a national breakout for Prophet.
Orval Prophet has come a long wayfrom that day at the Strawberry Festival in
Edwards, Ontario, where, at the age of 14,
he made his debut as an entertainer. The em-cee of the CFRA Show "Fiddlers Fling",where Orval made his radio debut, was FrankJones, now one of the most successful pro-ducers on the North American continent anda very important part of Columbia's Nashvillescene.
From Festival to radio and then on tothe recording end of the business. It was onesuccess after another. His first disc underthe Decca banner, "I'm Going Back To Birm-ingham" turned out to be a big one for Orvaland is now considered a collectors item. Thisalso led to his appearance on WSM's "GrandOle Opry" as well as radio and TV appear-ances across the country.
It was in 1957 that Decca began usingthe now famous "Nashville Sound" and Orval, using the moniker of Johnny Six, which wasdreamed up by Decca's A&R chief Paul Cohen, was one of the first to record with this dis-tinctive sound. The disc "Mademoiselle"
turned out to be such an important item inthe Decca catalogue that it was included inan album titled "Foreign Love Affair" whichreceived the nod from the U.S. trade papersand added to his popularity across the nation.
Somehow, Orval Prophet, this kindlydown to earth Country Gentleman, who intro-duced the world to the "Nashville Sound",has managed to remain an important part ofthe Canadian country scene, although he doesmaintain a home in Miami, Florida, as wellas his Ottawa home. He still makes frequenttelevision and radio appearances and is con-sidered one of the top club draws in thebusiness.
The Jon & LeeGroup
by LARRY LEBLANCThe Initial release of "Bring It Down
Front" by Toronto's Jon -Lee Group was theresult of a struggle for one of Canada's finestbands, to release a recording.
For three years, under the billing ofJon and Lee and The Checkmates they werethe direct dominating force behind Toronto'sR&B market. But no record.
They wanted to be sure of their firstrecord. The unit saw some of the mistakesmade in debut discs by other Canadian groups.
While performing in New York, in
clubs like the Cheetah, the Scene and theTelephone Booth, in the past year, Jon andLee became accepted by many of the Americanmusicians congregating in that city.
They played with Junior Walker andthe All Stars at Shea's Stadium and he calledthem one of the best units that he had everplayed with.
The Canadian public had an interest-ing look at the six when they appeared onCBC-TV's "Compass". The half hour pro-gram showed the group during a routine week, offstage and performing.
Their "homebase" the Avenue RoadClub was also the local meeting spot for mostmusicians. Jam sessions were held quiteoften with members of Toronto's top groupstaking part. Murray Campbell, manager of theclub has been a close friend and advisor tothe Jon -Lee Group for some time. UnderMurray's guidance they realized their goalsand potential.
Members of the Group are: drummerJeff Cutler; organist Mike Fonfara; bassistPeter Hodgson and lead guitarist Larry

AmbroseReleasesOn FontanaToronto: Well known TV and stage personality,Tommy Ambrose would appear to be launchedon a successful recording career with the re-lease of his Fontana single "They Don't GiveMedals" and "Casino Royale".
Producer, and now manager of Ambrose,Phil Ramone, first met Tommy when he wasin Toronto on a jingle producing junket abouta year and a half ago. He liked the Ambrosesound and both kept in touch with one another, hoping that the right break would come along.Being as Ramone produces for many of thegreats including Lena Horne, Quincy Jonesand Harry Belafonte as well as movie sound-tracks, it was just a matter of time for the
right material to happen that would suit theAmbrose sound. The Bacharach-David composition "They Don't Give Medals", which

Received a letter from Hank Snow andTV viewers will be in for a treat this Fall. That's all I can tell you now. Hank will beappearing in Shelbourne, Ont., Aug 19 and20 and in Hamilton Aug 26. Try not to misshim. He has a great show.
George Hamilton IV dropped us a fewlines to say all is going well and how muchhe enjoyed playing The Horseshoe.
Caught the sneak preview of Roy
Orbison's movie "The Fastest Guitar Alive".It's a fun movie and very entertaining. Roywrote all the songs and background music forthis, his first movie. Hilda Cunningham, ofMGM arranged the private showing. Roy turnedup for the showing which added to the excite-ment. Quality's Clyde McGregor reports thesoundtrack album is selling very well.
As I was rushing out of the studio toattend CHIN's big bash, I met Bobby Brittan,Rem Records recording artist. Bobby looksgreat. He and his group are spending the sum-mer touring the resort areas.
The CHIN party was very successful.Johnny Lombardi, always the perfect host, provided live entertainment, dancing and lotsof delicious food. Purpose of the affair wasto introduce CHIN's new station format (picsand story to follow). All the record companyexecs and promo men were present.
Dick Contino turned out a good en-gagement at The Beverley Hills Motel. He'sa fine singer as well as being a master of theaccordian. Don't be too surprised to see himhit the record trail again.
The opening of Granny's (formerlyThe Red Line) in the Walker House, wasscene of mass confusion, but aren't all open-ings. PR man Phil Stone was kept very busylooking after the press and VIP's. The moddecor with strobe lighting inserted in the
walls creates a psychedelic atmosphere.

room, and Joey Poster couldn't have picked abetter group. They are one of the most re-freshing collection of today's sounds in thebusiness. Their showstopper, of course, was"Canada" currently No. 63 on the RPM 100.Arc execs Phil Anderson, Bill Gilliland andTom Burny were present along with promotionman Richard Dinsmore. Cathy McKinnon andnewly acquired Arc artist Doug Crosely were
seen enjoying the show. While strolling through the Village, I
was attracted to Boris' where I came face toface with Luke and The Apostles. This grouphas to be one of the best psychedelic dis-ciples around. They'll be playing with TheJefferson Airplane at the O'Keefe Centre,
July 31st., through August 5th.Upstairs at the Red Gas, The Ken-
sington Market were playing to a very large
crowds. Looks like Bernie Finkelstein, their
manager, has another winner. The Jefferson Airplane really took off
last Sunday at NPS. The big love -in was asmashing success. No, I didn't push that nicepoliceman into the fountain. If the JA caused
that much excitement without their psychedeliclighting, hold onto your seats at the O'KeefeCentre when they really take off. It will be agreat trip.
There was a get-together at the KingEdward Hotel after the JA free concert, whichwas hosted by RCA victor and the O'Keefe
Centre. This gave the press a closer look atthe Airplane and their promoters. Needless tosay, The Fillmore's Bill Graham, manager ofthe San Francisco group, and' promoter JohnMorris were very pleased with the events ofthe day. O'Keefe's Jack Karr advised me thatadvance ticket sales are excellent.
John Donabie, the rock jock from
CKLB and their mid -morning man Barry
Sarazin, dropped by the office for a chat andboth are looking forward to their appearancesat the Oshawa Fair with the mobile unit.
CHNO Sudbury's personality, John
Loweth was doing the Village scene lastweek and popped in for a visit and told meabout a wild group known as The Inferno Five. The Group has been booked solidly throughoutthe north country and there's a chance thatthat they may be playing the Toronto area inthe near future.
I dropped out to the new Capitolbuilding and it is so beautiful I just had toshow you a picture of it. While I was there I
was given the grand tour by Paul White andDick Rieando and also had a chat with Mr.Ed Leetham.
McKENZIE-MACKENZIE - WHO'SGOT THE FLOWER BOY???NYC: Lou Adler's Ode Records was soon torelease Scott McKenzie's follow-up to hissmash single "If You're Going To San Fran-cisco Be Sure To Wear Some Flowers In YourHair", but Capitol moved in with "Look InYour Eyes" and are touting it as the hot follow-up to "Flowers".
Apparently Capitol taped MacKenzie(their spelling) when he was a member of TheJourneymen, which resulted in this release.

WHAT'S A NICE KID LIKE YOU DOINGIN A BUSINESS LIKE THIS??
This week record producer Stan Klees digresses from his series on recording for one week toanswer some of the many questions that readers have been sending into RPM for our guest columnistto answer. If you have any questions on the music industry as a business, send them to Stan Klees,Guest Columnist, RPM, 1560 Bayview Avenue, Toronto 17.
"Our group would like to record songs thathave already been recorded by other groups. How much will it cost to record songs thatare owned by these groups?"
T.S. Burnaby, B.C.Nhen a composition is recorded once, it canbe recorded by anyone and performed by any-one (as long as there is no profit motive inthe performance). If you play the song public -ally, or make copies of the record for sale, then it is up to the record company that putsthe record out for sale, to apply for a "com-pulsory mechanical licence". The statutoryrate is 2 cents per playing surface for everycopy sold. To put it simply, permission isn'tneeded, just the licence which by internationalcopyright law, the publisher must grant, how-ever, the royalties must be paid quarterly tothe publisher in question. Technically thesongs are not necessarily owned by the groupwho did the record. The song was probablyassigned to a music publisher who administersthe composition on behalf of the songwriter(like an agent) usually for a standardized per-centage of the royalties collected for copiesof the record or sheet music sold. I won't gointo performance rights payments (till a laterarticle), but everytime a composition is playedpublically for profit, the publisher must bepaid, and again the songwriter and publishertake their percentage of this payment."How can I get into the business in a capa-city other than an artist? I am very interestedin the record business but have no performingtalent." - T.H. Etobicoke, Ont.In your lengthy letter you told me about your
large record collection and your interest in
records. This is very good, but more impor-tant is a good sound formal education. Therecord business has become a very organizedand big business and a good education isnecessary today to be an administrator. Ex-perience is very necessary, and I can think ofone good place for you to start - in the stock-room or office of a record company or distribu-tor. I can think of a number of very successfulyoung record execs in Toronto who did startright at the bottom. Salary range for recordexecs can be $12,000 to $20,000 per year."Our group has written some songs, and wewant to send out tapes to record companiesand disc jockeys, but we don't want anybodyto steal our songs. Can we have our songsprotected and who will do it for us and howmuch will it cost?" R.V.J. Dawson Creek, B.C.As soon as you write a song you are protectedautomatically as the creator by what is calledthe "natural copyright". However, you mustbe able to prove that you created it before itwas stolen. The best way to do this is to senda tape or lead sheet of the song to yourselfby REGISTERED mail. Don't open it, file itaway just in case you have to prove that youwrote it before the thief who has to prove hewrote it before you sent it to yourself. Besure to register the letter or package anddon't open it. That will protect your songswhile you are trying to interest someone in it.Once you have some performances (recordsetc.) you will have no trouble getting a pub-lisher to look after it for you. It doesn't costanything to have a song published if the song
BY STAN KLEES(Guest Columnist)
becomes important enough for a publisher topick it up. Further steps should he taken ifyour compositions will be exploited inter-nationally, but for protection in Canada, theprocedure above would be the initial step."In a recent column you mentioned that groupsshould do their own original material. Howabout giving songwriters a break and encoura-ing groups to record new songs by songwritersas well as their own compositions?"
D.W. Halifax, N.S.By all means, groups and artists should recordoriginal songs whether they write them or not.The important thing is not to record hits thathave already been hits, or (even worse) takethe song off a record and do it exactly likethe original version was done. The word orig-inal song should mean a song that you oryour group made famous first. Too bad groupscan't get together with songwriters and workas a team to give the group an original song(and often an original sound) and give thesongwriter a start by doing his songs.

JON & LEE continued from page 1Leishman. Together they present a soundthat is occasionally referred to as "funk" - awell balanced meeting point between jazz andcommercial rhythm and blues.
"Most of the music we perform on-stage isn't rehearsed", disclosed Mike. "Theoutline is set down but we add to it as we goalong. That's why each time you hear us do anumber it could be different."
Together Jon Finley and Lee Jacksonare explodable talent. The duo are performersthat many others are trying to copy for thatdown home feeling mixed with an excitingdanceable jazz sound. The package pene-trates the audience like a spear.
Jon is easily one of the top whitesoul singers in North America. His interpre-tation of "blue-eyed soul" conies across tothe crowd as he chants, groans and half -moanswhile hurdling himself into the music. Theshort blond -haired singer has made a massivestudy of the music he performs.
The leader of the band is Lee. Hisbusiness sense and judgement has put thegroup where it is today. Onstage he sets theenvironment of well -disciplined "soul". Mostof the arrangements are done by this talentedperformer.
The Jon -Lee 'Group return to Canadathe first two weeks of August to play.in theOntario area, then back to the States to playengagements in New York City, WildwoodN.J. and Philadelphia.
"Bring It Down Front" found on
Sparton Records in Canada and ABC -Para-mount in the U.S. is only a "first" from theGroup. Let's hope there is much more tocome!!!!

RADIO PERSONAMY OF THE WEEK
Oshawa, Ont: When it comes to purring in theright key for the housewives, tom -cat BarrySarazin has it all over his competitors. HisCKLB mid -day venture into the homes ofthousands of city, town and country homesis fast becoming the most important part ofthe day with many thousands of city, townand country homes. Being as most residentsin the CKLB listening area are shift workers, they sometime or another get to hear thetwenty year old charmer, and that's enough tomake them constant listeners of the Barry
Sarazin show. Some of the gals in thefabricdepartment of the giant Motors plant havebeen caught listening to his show.
How can one so young gather up sucha loyal and large following? Take a peak inat the Oshawa Fair and if you can get closeenough to the CKLB mobile unit during thehours of 10 AM and 2 PM, you'll get an ideawhy. Oshawa is a young town. They like themusic of today and they like to have it playedto them by someone with a bit more knowledgethem that taken from the label copy. Barryhas acquired a tremendous amount of informa-tion on the easy listening, folk, folk-rock and
psychedelic sounds through his years ofworking different markets and having to ad-just to the likes and dislikes of an unseenaudience.
Barry Sarazin, the mellow -voicedLondoner (England), has worked at CJNR inBlind River, CKCY Sault Ste. Marie and waswith CJET Smiths Falls before "going wherethe action was" CKLB.
ROYALE & RAIDERSTO KINGSTONKingston, Ont: Columbia artists Billy JoeRoyale and Paul Revere and The Raiders haveapparently been skedded for a show at theArena with CKLC personalities hosting thegiant affair. Negotiations are apparently underwayto have the acts appear in Toronto after theirAug 17 appearance in Kingston.

This is an album of 12 HITS, any ofwhich a station could spin at anytimeof day and with any format. Each ofthe cuts would make a successfultop 10 single. Radio stations areplaying the cuts like they weresingles and a chart item might justresult from an album that is a TRI-BUTE to the Supremes. Rodgers andHart never sounded so good. Theyfit comfortably into the Motown Sound.MOTOWN - MO/MOS 659

If there ever was a winning teamthis is it. Tommy Boyce and BobbyHart are two very gifted young men.Their current single "Out And About"-is included in this album. The boystake turns singing. They producedthe album themselves and the labelreads A&M and that's endorsementenough to know that you are buyinga hit LP.A&M - 126

Music from the sound track of RoyOrbison's first movie. He wrote thesongs, sings them, and for the Orbisonfollowers (who must be multifold)this record is a MUST. This is a newOrbison in a new medium, but thetalent is the same. The songs tellthe story and after you see the movieyou can walk away with the entiresoundtrack. Off this album mightcome a big hit.MGM -E/SE 4475

Get ready for news of the greatestgroup in North America, and guess wherethey're from? - CANADA, of course. They'reTHE PAUPERS. - Editor
Paupers: What a name for a group thatwill soon be carrying their money in wheelbar-rows!
Opportunity came for The Pauperswhen Bernie Finkelstein, their former manager, booked them into New York's famous CafeAu Go Go. As usual, they put on a sensationalshow, to a celebrity -filled audience. On thisoccasion, Albert B. Grossman, who developedsuch stars as Bob Dylan, The Paul Butterfield
Noting the progress of this group, themanagement of the world famous Whysky-A-Go-Go, booked them for a week's engagement.
Sitting in the audience on openingnight, I noticed something I had rarely seenat this nighterie before. The crowd jumped toits feet to applaud the group at the end ofeach set. It was quite a welcome for a groupwith "no name", since the usual attractionsinclude such people as Johnny Rivers, TheTurtles and The Buffalo Springfield.
The Paupers' new album, "MagicPeople", will be released shortly on theVerve/Forecast label. In conjunction withthis release, the group is set for a 30 citytour, commencing August 2, which will spanthe United States. They also have engage-ments lined -up at Boston's Tea Party andwill return to Canada September 19 for theBell Telephone "Special" at Maple LeafGardens in Toronto.

Blues Band, and Peter, Paul and Mary, waspresent. He already had his hands on Canada'sIan and Sylvia and Gordon Lightfoot and allthat was missing was a group. He was over-whelmed with The Paupers' performance andsigned them to a seven year contract. Thismarked their new start.
The tours began. The Paupers traveledto Mobile, Alabama, where the Southern Col-leges Convention was being held. The resultwas offers for many concerts. The group alsoappeared at the Fillmore Auditorium in SanFrancisco and opened New York's newestnight club, The Electric Circus.
The United States and England wererepresented in the original Monterey Pop Fes-tival line-up, but the directors noticed thatsomething was missing - Canada. The Pauperswere quickly asked to perform and they ac-cepted. Seven thousand people left the Fes-tival talking about this previously, unheard-ofgroup.
mented to The Paupers, "You're the bestNew York City group I ever heard". AdamMitchell, lead singer, replied: "We're justbooked out of New York City, we're CANA-DIANS!" How's that for loyalty77777
At the recent MGM convention in LasVegas, The Paupers were presented as theMGM find of the year and much is expectedwith the release of their album.ITINERARY FOR PAUPERSJuly 28 - Boston

Sales of the Spencer Davis Group's LPcontributed to the increase, however, Mr.
