Lyrics of the songAs long as you gonna sex for me

Behind my awkward smile I've never listened, I've never

listened your type

Stop singing that verse, stop feelings like that

Stop singing that songYou stand on this, you stand till

this world dies

Can't find my head

No music, no sex, no immediate out just for my health

I'm still nervous, I'm still nervous, I'm drunk

This cold feeling, nervous, my feelings spread out

I feel like that

Still nerve endingsStill nerve endings won't die

Come find that outCome find that outNo one, nowhereNowhere, no one

Come find that outNowhere, nowhereCome find that outNowhere, nowhereCome find that out

I could never have a problem with a feeling

All behind, just like that

I'm still lonely, I'm still lonely in my head

I'm still feeling nervous, these feelings go worse

I stay trying

My nerve endingsMy nerve endings won't die

Come find that outCome find that outNo one, nowhereNowhere, no one

Come find that outNowhere, nowhereCome find that outNowhere, nowhereCome find that out

It's no original sin, can't see while I go through my heart

My nerve endingsMy nerve endings won't die

I'm hearing about this drug, can't hear nothing elseMy feelings cry

My nerve endingsMy nerve endings won't die

Come find that outCome find that outCome find that outCome find that outCome find that outCome find that outCome find that outCome find that outCome find that out

Meaning of the song and its relation to the videoThe video’s visual imagery is a disjuncture from the lyrics ,

however the video does have a metaphor and can has relation to the concept of the song.

• The song is about anxiety, as George Mitchell (the bands vocalist) found out that he was suffering from severe anxiety.

• The song is about understanding anxiety and how to get rid conquer it which is quite contradictory as Mitchell is still suffering from it.

• Overall the music video is a metaphor for getting rid of anxiety from your brain.

• The band also stated “we thought about a brain decomposing but then as they decompose, they bring life again with the maggots, so we thought it’d be a good idea to let a brain rot”.

The band

The band is an English post-punk band from Leed, England. The band consists of Henry Ruddel (drums), Mark Goldsworthy (guitar), Liam Matthews (guitar), George Mitchell (vocals), and Tom Kelly (bass).

The band is not yet well know however they are receiving sustained press attention from NME, Load and Quiet, Vice, The Guardian, etc.

How does this relate to there genre?

The post punk genre is a type of rock music that emerged from punk rock, it gathers elements from punk including ideology, music energy, DIY approach, and also provocation

• Although this music video is a disjuncture you can tell by the dark, rebellious nature of this video that it is in the punk rock genre.

• The video is quite fast paced in terms of the editing of the overlay

• The colours used in this video is harsh creating and uncomfortable feeling.

• In the part of the lip sync the lips and face tends to change colour which almost looks like makeup which is commonly used by punk artists.

Editing

Throughout the video used a pig brain and filmed it in time-lapse of it slowly rotting in there basement, this footage was played through out the music video

Page 8: Music video inspiration – ‘nerve ending’

EditingAs the clip of the decomposing brain was playing there was the use of an overlay of the band performing, this performance was distorted

This is image o the Mitchell lip syncing to the lyrics, the different saturations of colour on this clip helped improve the lack of lighting

There were also vague faces of the band shown, this overlay is almost like a separate clip that has been placed on top of the decomposing brain

CameraworkThe camerawork is simple, through out the video there is the use of over the head shot of the brain

On the overlay footages, the images are quite vague. However you can point out the there was the use of close ups of instruments being played and also lip syncing.

Mise En Scene

The use of mise en scene is also simple, as this was a low budget film

• The main prop used here is pig’s brain• The brain was filmed in the band’s basement • The use of lighting is dark, throughout the music video

however the editing made the video see bright• The clothing worn by the band is difficult to tell as it was

quite vague, but from the video it looks likes like they are wearing dark clothing while one is wearing a polo shirt

• There is also the use of instruments such as drums and guitars.

Why this video interested me?

The reason this video interested me is because of the extended metaphor of getting rid of anxiety. As well as this, the decomposing brain gave the band an identity and recognition as it would be the sort thing that would make people share this video due to morbid curiosity. It is also a video the would help me remember the band regardless if there faces were now shown or not in this video.

Similar to this video, I plan on using a motif such as this. For my own music video my character will have a heart condition so therefore the heart organ will contribute to my use of mise en scene. However I will not be using a real heart but rather a realistic prop heart or a prop that implies and conveys the message of a heart condition similarly to how this band conveyed the message of anxiety.
