Music moves us and touches us all in the most profound ways. our 78th season – Music That Moves You – will do just that. We’ve programmed concerts full of rich gems of the symphonic repertoire that will inspire and bring much joy.
our signature Masterworks series – seven sets of classical concerts – opens in september with Russian-born virtuoso natasha paremski in Tchaikovsky’s triumphant First Piano Concerto. And, we pay homage to our own iowa state Fair with the world premiere of Symphony On A Stick, which depicts in music the vibrant attractions of our internationally-acclaimed exhibition. We continue in october with Rimsky-Korsakov’s colorful Capriccio Espagnol and Beethoven’s serene Pastoral Symphony. in november, i’ve chosen one of my favorite Beyond the Score programs – Prokofiev’s Fifth Symphony – for our sixth collaboration with the Chicago symphony in this enriching and innovative multimedia presentation series.
it is my great privilege to invite renowned conductor Gerard Schwarz to guest-conduct our orchestra in Brahms’ sweeping Fourth Symphony. And then, Berlioz’s Romeo & Juliet, The Moldau and Beethoven’s Third Piano Concerto with the young, gifted pianist, Charlie Albright. our season concludes with a dazzling all-Tchaikovsky program, featuring award-winning violinist simone porter in the composer’s romantic Violin Concerto.
This season, we are pleased to introduce our new three-concert Pops series at the Des Moines Civic Center! We kick off with The Music of Billy Joel with Michael Cavanaugh of Broadway’s Movin’ Out, who will rock with songs like Piano Man, Just the Way You Are and so much more. our New Year’s Eve Pops will thrill this year with PBS and America’s Got Talent sensations The Texas Tenors. Finally, we once again collaborate with our friends at Des Moines performing Arts to bring two-time Tony Award winner and Broadway star Sutton Foster to perform American songbook classics with the orchestra.
Please join me for this great season of moving music! now is the time to plan for a season that you will remember for years to come – purchase a season ticket package and reserve your favorite seats, earn your subscriber rewards, and become a member of our symphony family today!

elena urioste has been praised for her “hypnotic
delicacy,” “expressive poise” and “lyrical
sensitivity,” and she makes her Des Moines
symphony debut in Glazunov’s virtuosic Violin
Concerto. The program opens dramatically with
Beethoven’s beloved “Pastoral” Symphony,
which evokes the beautiful countryside including
a rollicking thunderstorm that dissipates into
one of the most famous melodies in the
symphonic repertoire: the Shepherd’s Song.
The program concludes with Rimsky’s rhythmic
and exotic Capriccio Espagnol.

Go Beyond the score and experience prokofiev’s
Symphony No. 5 like never before in our sixth
annual collaboration with the Chicago symphony
orchestra. This dramatic presentation begins
with a riveting multimedia first half that takes
you back in time to WWii in soviet Russia.
During the war, the Russian artist played a
significant role in arousing a heroic, patriotic
sentiment among his fellow countrymen.
prokofiev composed a majestic masterpiece to
echo this emotion, a work that he himself
described as “a hymn to free and happy Man, to
his mighty powers, his pure and noble spirit.”
The first half presents the story behind the
music with dramatic visuals on a giant screen,
plus four actors depicting prokofiev, soviet
wartime officials, historians and other period
characters. After intermission, you will
experience the mighty Fifth Symphony in
its entirety. Don’t miss one of our most popular
