MUSIC

Valencia eats, drinks and breathes music. Half of Spanish musicians were born in Valencia as music is part of our culture and our DNA. Hence the immense cultural value of musical societies, organised under the Federación de Sociedades Musicales de la Comunidad Valenciana (FSMCV), which has 200,000 members, 40,000 musicians and 60,000 students.

The variety of music in the city brings together everything from pop music to the classical sounds of Capella de Ministrers (ICMA award in 2018), including bands, orchestras, chamber groups, choirs, rock groups, jazz and every genre you could imagine.

Two great bastions, Palau de le Arts and Palau de la Música, are the epicentres for any enthusiast of classical music, opera and large-scale productions. Musical experiences in Valencia also include countless music halls and venues for small-format concerts, open-air music on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea, and a rich programme of artists from all over the world, who include Valencia on their international tours.

As you can see, Valencia has all the ingredients to be the new Music City. It is no coincidence that Berklee College of Music established its only international campus outside the United States in Valencia. Neither is it a surprise that Plácido Domingo chose the Turia capital to locate his training centre for young musicians and singers.

Come and discover why.

2. PALAU DE LA MÚSICA If you are passionate about classical music, don’t hesitate to have the most pleasurable listening experience at the Palau de la Música de València, whose exceptional acoustics are a landmark in Europe. The works of Mahler, Mozart, Men-delsohn, Rachmaninov, Sibelius and Shostakovich, among others, will be included in the Palau’s programme. You will be able to see and listen to the London Philharmonic Or-chestra, the Dusseldorf Symphony Orchestra, the Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra of Saint Petersburg and, of course, the Or-chestra of Valencia, which has its headquarters in the Palau and supports the main musical activity of the auditorium.

There are two annual events not to be missed: the Interna-tional Jazz Festival every July and the International Band Contest (IBCM), which, with more than 130 years of history, is the most important of its kind in the world.

The Menut Palau cycle, with performances aimed at youn-ger audiences, is a perfect plan for a family visit to Valencia to learn to love and enjoy a complete repertoire of its music.

It aims to provide a centre to launch the careers of the most talented international musical students. It offers a unique study programme and an International Career Center to assist people in their transition from students to music professionals.

The Berklee Campus in Valencia has established strong ties with Valencian society through the more than 100 free concerts and festivals it offers in places as emblematic as the Ciutat de les Arts i les Ciències, the Centre del Carme de Cultura Contemporànea or the Bancaja Cultural Centre. Its programme includes the series of open-air concerts “Un lago de conciertos” and the “Musaico Festival”; however, its cultural activity in the city goes beyond this.

With a diverse student body representing more than 100 countries, a significant international community, and alumni and teachers who have collectively won more than 300 Gram-my and Latin Grammy Awards, Berklee is the world’s premier learning laboratory for the music of today and the future.

From 1879 to the present day, a long succession of generations of great musicians have been trained at the Valencian Music Academy: Salvador Giner, José Serrano, Manuel Palau, Oscar Esplá, Vicente Asencio, José Iturbi, Joaquín Rodrigo and an unending series of noteworthy representatives of Valencia who share their knowledge in music academies, secondary schools and music schools throughout the state and abroad. Others have obtained positions as soloists or directed one of the top ten orches-tras and professional bands worldwide.

PERFORMING ARTS

It’s time to choose your seat. Broadway musicals, comedy, drama, circus, dance, family plays, hypnosis and mentalism shows. This year you can enjoy new local productions, relive the old classics, or discover international hits such as Kooza, the sixth show from the prestigious Cirque du Soleil, which will visit Valencia from 30 May to 16 June.

The most consolidated stages are in the heart of the city: century-old theatres, such as the Teatre Principal or the Olympia, historic theatres such as the Teatre Talía, or the unique Rialto Theatre with its Art Deco style, which also houses the headquarters of the Valencian film archive with original version screenings of films from down through the ages. If you are looking for a less classical programme, check the box office of Espai Rambleta and the Teatre el Musical (TEM).

The independent theatre and small companies are thriving. They generally stage performances outside the city centre, with the Valencian language having a prominent place. This is the case of the Teatre el Musical or the Sala Russafa and other alternative centres, such as the Sala Off València or Espacio Inestable. The choice is yours to make.

URBAN FESTIVALS

The cultural life of the city is in constant movement. Music, urban art, circus, theatre, dance, photography and poetry are the stars of a calendar of urban festivals that has grown continuously in recent years.

There is an immense variety of formats, from multitudinous festivals with huge stages, such as the Festival de Les Arts in the Ciutat de les Arts i les Ciències, to smaller formats, with stage performances in the most unexpected places, such as the Cabanyal Íntim theatre festival, performed in the houses of the city’s most seafaring neighbourhood.

No matter when you visit, you will come across works of art or performances all over the city, especially in the most lively neighbourhoods, such as Russafa, Benimaclet, Extramurs, Patraix, el Cabanyal or Ciutat Vella. Just go with the flow.

1. INTRAMURS This is considered one of the most outstanding festivals in the Valencian Community organised exclusively through private initiative, according to the Observatorio de la Cultura de Fundación Contemporánea. For ten days, it fills the historic centre with hundreds of artistic manifestations from different disciplines, such as the living arts, urban interventions, installations, exhibitions and design.

It is an initiative to experiment with risky and participative contemporary projects. The street is the backdrop of the works and the audience can intervene in the final result of the creation. Interaction with participants, visitors, tourists and neighbours is essential for the creation of new ways and concepts of making culture, making neighbourhoods and making cities. A free cultural offering where disciplines merge and complement each other, seeking experimenta-tion, innovation and hybridisation in the arts exhibited at street level.

4. RUSSAFA CULTURA VIVA This is an initiative that develops projects at the commu-nity level in the Russafa district, carrying out activities and events to create a space of coexistence and exchan-ge among the different cultures and backgrounds that this neighbourhood brings together. Among the events, Russafa Carnival stands out ‒ a project fomenting the spirit of conciliation that fills the streets with colour. The neigh-bourhood becomes a space for citizenship and self-ma-nagement of new independent projects in the spheres of culture, art and social movements.

These voices will offer experimental poetry with distorted voices, electronic music, poetry in action ‒ today the body is poetry ‒ poetic lyrics, with poets who sing and singers who compose, revolutionary poetry: words can be used as stones to be hurled against impunity.
