Upfrontby Emmanuel Legrand, Music & Media editor -in -chief

After proposing to Napster, divorcing from Dome-

maim and Zelnick and bringing Rudi back home,Thomas Middelhoff is now flirting with EMI.

What an appetite he has! And welcome to the lat-est weekly episode of the ongoing saga of the Bertels-mann's chief executive's career in the music industry.

Obviously he is on a roll. After all, this is the manwho said in March this year that he expected to be No.1in the music industry "within the next 12 months"-although not "by the end of the year," as written every-where else.

It's a dangerous thing to -say but, if he succeeds, everyone will shower him with glory. If he doesn't, hislong-term credentials as a manager will be seriouslyquestioned.

After the collapse of the EMI/Warner deal, Middel-hoff knew he had a window of opportunity, albeit onlyhalf open. But, if it is confirmed, clearing a deal with

EMI could be a hard nut to crack. It is quite fascinat-ing to see that so many people fail to remember thepitfalls EMI and Time Warner fell into when theirproposed merger was put under the microscope byEurope's regulators.

Why would the Commission's verdict be any differ-ent than it was two months ago? Have things changedso drastically in the music industry that the conceptsof dominant position and oligopolies described in theEC "statement of objections" are no longer valid?

The size of the combined EMI/BMG entity is nottoo dissimilar to the size of EMI/Warner. So, unlessEMI shrinks in size, it could be a good bet that theCommission will apply thesame reading of the situationas it did when it ruled onEMI/Warner.

What the EMI/Warner casehas proven is that you cannottake for granted the Commis-sion's clearance of a deal. Mid-delhoff probably appreciatesthis. Even though he is in ahurry.

UMG pays artists half MP3.com damagesby Carolyn Horwitz & Bill Holland

NEW YORK - Universal MusicGroup is paying half of the $53.4million ( 62.3) in damages it wonin its copyright -infringement suitwith MP3.com to its artists.

Both parties agreedto the figure, said to bethe largest statutorydamage award forcopyright infringe-ment ever.

"We always saidthat this was not justabout us, but about ourartists," UMG presi-dent/C00 ZachHorowitz told Music &Media's sister publica-tion Billboard. "Giventhe unprecedentednature of the award, we decidedthat the appropriate thing to do was

to share it with the artists, whetheror not their contracts require it."

After UMG removes $3.4 millionfor legal fees, $25 million will bedistributed among the artistswhose material has been used onMy.MP3.

UMG also agreed tolicense its entiremusic catalogue foruse in theMy.MP3.com musicstorage service.

Michael Robertson,CEO of MP3 said:"This provides clearevidence that the-needs of rights hold-ers and music fanscan be accommodatedin the digital musicspace. The market-

place that has served artists andconsumers for so long will continue

to thrive in the era of the Internet."The judgement was the result of

strong suggestions by Judge JedRakoff of the district court for theSecond District of New York thatthe parties settle. Otherwise, bothwould have had to face weeks andperhaps months of legal wranglingover the final number of infringedrecordings and arguments such asthe validity of UMG's copyrightregistrations and whether or notthey were illegally registered asworks made for hire.

In a separate agreement, UMGstruck a deal to receive a "signifi-cant amount" of MP3.com stockwarrants.

Still pending are suits againstMP3.com by shareholders andindies that include Zomba andTVT, as well as a class actionbrought recently by Unity Enter-tainment Corp.

VRT rebrands Radio 3 as Klaraby Marc Maes

BRUSSELS - Flemish pub-lic broadcaster VRT's clas-sical channel Radio 3 ischanging its name to Klarafrom December and spawn-ing its own record label.

The rebranding is a reac-tion to the station's 1.7 %share of the audience inFlanders-the specialistclassical/jazz channel isconsidered the weakest linkin the VRT radio chain.

VRT spokesman Paul deMeulder says that the new -look Klara's music will bebased on "harmony andmelody."

The station will broadcasta mix of different styles ofclassical music during day-times. After 19.00, there willbe live music or themed pro-

gramming featuring jazz, ethnic and world music, avant garde and fusion, according to De Meulder.

Klara also intends toproduce its own studiorecordings of Flemishmusic and musicians. Anew recordlabel, calledKlara, willrelease aroundsix albums ayear, to be distributedthrough Baltic.

The newly launched sta-tion will also be sponsoredby financial group Dexia."This sponsorship allows usto add to the programming, with live broadcasts andoutdoor events," explainsDe Meulder.

Lut Behiels, manager atUniversal Classical Depart -

bra

ment, emphasizes that sta-tions such as Klara contin-ue to play an important rolein breaking classical andjazz music. "They are cru-cial in promoting culture,"he says. "I'm convinced that

Klara, with new andtalented presen-ters such asChantal Pattyn[hired from

VRT's alterna-tive music station

Studio Brussel] will getits teeth into the job," addsBehiels. "Apart fromcrossover artists likeAndrea Bocelli or Allesan-dro Zafiro, who also get air-play on the more popularchannels, a station likeKlara is able to put itsenergy into more specilaistclassical releases."

FRANCE SPOTLIGHT

Success of domestic productcan't hide market problems

Nothing sums up the currentstate of the French marketas well as a quick glance atthe album charts in recentmonths-local repertoire is

dominant, with an average of six toseven domestic titles in the Top 10.

Domestic repertoire not only sells, but sells in higher quantities thanever before. But the ever-growingmarket share of local repertoire-nowover 56% of total sales-is small con-solation to an industry facing itsbiggest crisis in a decade. "The

market has been flat, if not in decline, during the first half of the year, butthere haven't been that many bigreleases so far," notes market leaderUniversal Music France president

"On the bright side, theshare of French music is dominant

trade body SNEP. Local successescover a wide range of music genres, including traditional chanson (CharlesAznavour, Henri Salvador),.rap (Passi,Saian Supa Crew), electronica (SaintGermain, Etienne de Crecy), rock(Louise Attaque, Tryo), and musicals

Export: a growing businessAccording to estimates, the export market for French music now representsannual revenues in the region of Ffr 800 million ( 421.9m), more than inter-national income from the movie industry. Universal's Negre says that whatis also changing is the growing reach of export, which is no longer confinedto Europe, but has seen notable successes in Latin America and in Asia."There have been significant inroads made," agrees Negre. "It is a tribute tothe quality of production in France, of our artist's creativity and our capaci-ty as labels to promote them abroad."

The number of international success stories is growing. It's mainlythrough a new wave of electronica/dance acts-Modjo (Universal), currentlytopping M&M's Eurochart, Saint Germain (EMI), Daft Punk and Air(Virgin), Etienne de Crecy (V2), Benjamin Diamond (Epic), Bob Sinclar(Yellow/East West)-that France is mapping the world (see story page 10).But other genres are also selling internationally, from pop band Phoenix(Virgin), rap act Orishas (EMI), world music artists such as Manu Chao(whose debut Virgin album sold over two millionunits worldwide) and Youssou N'Dour (Sony Music).

"Faced with a tough local market, labels turn tothe international market for additional revenues,"says SNEP general manager Herve Rony. "There isa real pressure to develop export sales."

Majors as well as indies are adapting their struc-ture to develop international sales. "Today, you can-not limit your horizon simply to France," says V2'sZannettacchi, who has high hopes for de Crecy'srecently released album Tempovision, out in 22countries.

"Audiences are getting increasingly more open tomusic coming from France," says Virgin's deBuretel, eagerly anticipating next year's release ofsophomore albums from Daft Punk and Manu Chao. "The internationalpotential of French music is growing."

Naïve's president Patrick Zelnik sees the current blending of creativity ata worldwide level-as exemplified by the success of Buena Vista SocialClub-as a very encouraging situation. "Music and creativity comes fromanywhere these days. There is a gigantic melting pot of influences. It is avery exciting period on an artistic level. This is absolutely thrilling."

(Les 10 Commandements, Romeo &Juliette). The charting crowd alsoincludes established acts (JohnnyHallyday, Patricia Kaas) as well asnewcomers (Le Rat Luciano, Tryo).

"The music industry is at a cross-roads-it is a transitional period,"analyses Olivier Montfort, presi-dent & chief executive, Sony MusicFrance, who, like others in theindustry, paints a rather dark por-trait of market conditions inFrance: "There is less and lessspace for artists, with radio sta-tions reducing their playlists andthere are hardly any TV shows fea-turing artists, and those who do

use artists as an alibi for somethingelse. Retail is in full consolidation withfewer accounts, and those remainingare becoming more important. In addi-tion, TV advertising rates are going upand with the reduction of advertisingslots on public channels space is scarceand expensive."

CD -R copyingLumbroso says the situation is mostlydue to issues specific to the Frenchmarket, such as the development ofCD -R copying. In France, con-sumers can buy up to 20 blankCD -Rs for Ffr 100 (15.25) andit is estimated that up to 200million blank CD -Rs will besold in 2000.

"Music is a high risk busi-ness," explains Virgin Francepresident Emmanuel deBuretel. "The level of invest-ment is growing." SophieZannettacchi, managing direc-tor, V2 France, adds: "Theentry ticket is the same foreveryone-and it is very high. Signingan artist is a big commitment. Youhave to evaluate your risks and youcannot multiply your signings."

These comments show the frustra-tion record company executives canexperience when looking at sales lev-els and market conditions even at atime when local repertoire is doingwell, both in France and abroad.

BMG president Bruno Gerentes, whose company has made a recoveryin the past two years after a decade ofsliding market share, notes that radioconsolidation and formatting are keyelements in the change of the market-place, but can work both ways."Radio segmentation has some goodaspects," he explains. "There is awider diversity of titles played over-all, but you have less overlap thanbefore from station to station. Having

access to a set of stations with a dif-ferent culture and a different soundoffers more opportunities for artists. The downside is that the power toprogramme songs is in the hands ofvery few people and that music test-ing is king, which can affect artists. As much as possible we have to fightto preserve the diversity of the radiolandscape."

Resentment towards radioBut there is growing resentmentamong labels-especially indepen-dent companies-at the way radiostations run their programming. Oneof the main problems is radio expo-sure. Indie label's industry body UPFIis concerned about the power rotationrates that some stations such as NRJhave adopted. "It simply kills arecord," says UPFI general managerJerome Roger. "How can you expectsomeone to buy a record if it has beenheard 60 or 70 times a week on radio? And it goes with tighter playlists. Thewhole system is going to be blownaway if this continues."

But looking at the future, manyindustry executives see some reasonsfor optimism. For once, the Internet isviewed as a very good marketing plat-form to "expose artists at a very inter-esting cost," according to Sony'sMontfort. "The Internet is a fantastictool to reach the fans instantly andcreate a buzz on an artist," he adds.

Gerentes also sees the Internet as

a substitute for France's lack of radiodiversity and for its reduced retailbase. "The Internet is great because itcan be accessed anywhere and there-fore is a factor in easing up access tomusic. [Rock formatted Paris -basedstation] Oui FM is only available inParis, but through the Internet youcan listen to it wherever you are. Thischanges the landscape."

Virgin, as all the labels, has beefedup its Internet resources-financialand human-and uses the Internetintensively for marketing and promo-tion purposes. "You have to invent themarketing of tomorrow while takingcare of today," says De Buretel. "It iscrucial to be creative, rather thanspending millions buying advertisingspace on TV. We have to work differ-ently and reinvent ourselves eachyear."

FRANCE SPOTLIGHT

Musicals stage renaissance in France11 the world loves a show, and France has fallen headover heels for musicals dur-ing the past two years.

ollowing in the footstepsof the phenomenal success of NotreDame de Paris, no less than three newFrench musical soundtracks -10Commandements, Romeo & Juliette, and Les Mille et une Wes d'Ali Baba(all signed to Mercury/UniversalFrance)-have been in the upperreaches of the airplay and sales chartssince their release. And the successisn't limited to France, with Europegetting in on the act, with Les Rois duMonde and the Romeo & Juliettesoundtrack album each making theirmark on the European charts.

Extensive radio airplayThe musicals have also done well atradio. At full service radio station,RTL, L'Envie d'Aimer (10 Commande-ments) reached No.1, Les Rois duMonde number two, and A Quoi Bon(Les Mille et une Vies d'Ali Baba) 24on the station's chart. "For a long timeit was thought that the French werenot receptive to musical comedy, butwith the enormous success of `NotreDame' that attitude started tochange," says Alain Tibolla, Head ofProgramming at RTL Radio.

"Frankly I was very surprised bythe success of Notre Dame de Paris. Noone could have predicted it, but it wasevident in the strength of the melodiesand songs. There are now three musi-cals out at the same time, each with itsown style and appeal, but Notre Damehas set the standards."

Virgin Megastore's main Champs-Elysees branch reports brisk sales onmusical soundtracks, acknowledginga trend that is attracting customers ofall ages. Les Rois du Monde has beenthe best-selling single for three weeksrunning with La Peine Maximum (10Commandements) not far behind. Interms of album sales, both Romeo &Juliette and 10 Commandementsreached the top 10.

France might have some catchingup to do on the American and Englishtradition of musicals-or the run-away popularity of an Andrew Lloyd

Musicals have dominatedthe charts in France thisyear, signalling a realrenaissance for the genre.Millane Kang reviews theprogress of a phenomenonthat has become a realFrench affair in 2000.Webber blockbuster-but the genrehas definitely gaining a foothold. Itsroots can be traced back toStarmania, the cult rock opera whichfeatured music by Michel Berger andlyrics by Luc Plamondon. The showrecently celebrated its 20th anniver-sary, and its soundtrack (WEA) hassold almost 4.5 million copies, makingit one of the best selling albums inFrance. An English -language versionentitled Tycoon was released in 1992,featuring Cindy Lauper, Kim Carnes,Celine Dion, Tom Jones and NinaHagen-it sold half a million copies.

Luc Plamondon, along withRichard Cocciante, was also responsi-ble for the musical score of NotreDame de Paris, adapted from VictorHugo's famous novel. The soundtrack(Columbia/Sony) was the fastest sell-ing record of the year and the singleBelle the 1998 smash hit of theFrench-speaking territories. In totalthe soundtrack has sold a staggering7.5 million units (studio album, dou-ble live CD, singles and videos com-

bined) in France, Belgium,Switzerland and Canada. The studioalbum was No.1 in the album chartsfor 17 weeks and the double live CDsold more than one million units. Thesingle Belle sold three million copiesin France alone, spending 30 weeks atthe top of the charts.

Focus on albumsUniversal's strategy for the new gen-eration of musicals is to marketsoundtracks distinctly separate fromthe shows. Pierre Satge, who overseesinternational development atMercury, explains that the label han-dles the albums "without waiting forthe opening of the musicals, working

the soundtracks like a regular recordwith singles, sales and TV cam-paigns." Satge admitted he wag sur-prised by their success. "It's thestrength of the titles and universalmessage of the lyrics," he said. "It'sthe music that speaks."

Romeo & Juliette is a classic exam-ple of how, the albums come first. Themusical doesn't open until January2001, but the soundtrack entered thecharts in April and has stayed in thetop 10 ever since. Singles Aimer (ToLove), and Les Roi du Monde (Kingsof the World), have also both been bighits.

Another big hit musical is 10Commandements (The 10 Command-ments), based on the story of Moses, and the work of French film directorand screenwriter Elie Chouraqui.Music and lyrics were written byPascal Obispo, Lionel Florence andPatrice Guirao. "With the need forspirituality at the beginning of a newcentury and problems in the MiddleEast, this story of peace and bringing

people together came at the righttime," says Satge. The soundtrackalbum has already sold over 400,000copies, while its first single L'Envied'Aimer has sold 750,000.

The latest addition to the musicalsfamily is the Jean-Claude Camus-produced Les Mille et Une Vies d'AliBaba (The Thousand and One Lives ofAli Baba), which opened in Paris inSeptember. With music by FabriceAboulker and Alain Lanty and lyrics byThibaut Chatel and Frederic Doll, theshow has enjoyed success both in thecapital and on tour, and features a widevariety of musical styles including jazz, pop, dance, reggae, soul and Middle -Eastern music. Its hit singles Tu MeManques Depuis Longtemps and AQuoi Bon have helped push albumsales past the 100,000 (gold) mark.

On the international front, Romeo& Juliette is selling well in Belgiumand Switzerland and will export toPortugal, Holland and Canada at thebeginning of next year. Lyrics arebeing translated into local languagesand 10 Commandements is set to bedistributed in native language in theU.S., England, Japan and Russia.

Export salesDirector of international exploitationat Universal, Eric Vanderpoorter, states: "Our musicals work well in allFrench-speaking territories-theshows are filled with hits, impressivescores, great casts-but it's not easyto sell a musical. The shows haveexport potential but there are lan-guage problems and production costsare high. We still have to wait to seethe results."

The success of Notre Dame hasundoubtedly reawakened France to themusical as a genre, but it is still earlydays, according to Alain Tibolla. "Themusical tradition is not fully estab-lished in France but is on the righttrack," he says. "In France there is aplace for musicals which have thecapacity to unite several generationsaround the same music. I hope we willadopt a taste for musicals because theyare a fully-fledged spectacle withmusic, scenery and costumes... a showthat transports us somewhere else."

Rounding up the ones to watch in FranceSaian Supa Crew(Source/Virgin)Compared favourably toPharcyde (whom they sup-ported in the UK last May),The Roots and Jurassic 5,rap act Saian Supa Crewhave created a domestic and interna-tional impact that only MC Solaarcan match. FRANCE SPOTLIGHT

Dance music is stronger than everunderlying the produc-ivity of the French

dance scene, one factorstands out-a para-

digm shift in youth priorities over thelast six years. A survey of youth pref-erences taken as recently as 1994placed music in fifth place, some waybehind cinema, clothes and, believe itor not, books. The same survey lastyear saw music leaping into firstplace with accompanying evidencethat France is now the world's secondlargest market for hip hop.

The reasons for the popularity ofhip hop are not hard to pin down. Withhundreds of thousands of disempow-ered and economically marginalisedyouth in the "banlieux" (suburbs), thegenre helps give voice to their dire sit-uation. However, because of this-andthe fact that it is rapped in French-itis not much of an export item."Although the rap scene is much big-ger, it will never export like electroni-

ca, which is inherently less reliant onlyrics," points out Philippe Dao, labelmanager at Virgin imprint Labels.

Labels is currently attempting tobridge the gap between hip hop andthe dancefloor with the ElectroCypher album. Produced by a group ofup and coming musicians fromMarseille, the release consists of a col-lection of tributes to electro acts fromthe early 80s.

"We are promoting the album toboth scenes," says Dao, "but to be hon-est I think it will be much easier toreach the electronica fans-many ofwhom already like electro-than therap fans. It's lyrics that interest therap demographic and this albumdoesn't have many."

While he might not be overly opti-

Anyone who doubts the continuing strength of Frenchdance music need only take a glance at the Eurochartto see that it remains as strong-if not stronger-thanever. So why do so many acts rely on internationalmarkets for their sales? Gary Smith reports.

mistic about the potential of ElectroCypher, Dao is confident of the con-tinuing international popularity ofFrench dance. "Back in 1995/6, whensuddenly everyone was talking aboutFrench dance acts, it was a trend,"says Dao. "Now the idea of good dancemusic from France is firmly estab-lished."

Other upcoming Labels releasesinclude a new Respect Is Burningcompilation, released worldwide inFebruary 2001 and mixed by DJDeep. The last Respect compilation,At The Playboy Mansion featuringDimitri From Paris, sold 150,000units worldwide. Superfunk has alsojust released a third single called LastDance, which features Everis Pellius, and is a vocal -heavy version of LastDance To Copacabana from thegroup's 200,000+ selling debut albumHold Up.

Changing landscapeFrench acts may well be finding suc-cess abroad but life is not always anupward curve. Picnic Attack(Versatile), the debut album fromI:Cube, sold 9,000 copies in the UKalone in 1997/8, thanks partly to averitable blizzard of positively -charged press. Two years later thelandscape has changed. "Due to vari-ous factors including a distributiondeal that didn't work out, we only sold2,000 copies in the UK [of the follow-up] Adore," says label founder Gilb R."Happily the French market, wherewe've sold over 10,000 copies, com-pensated for that. French acts areundeniably popular and credible inthe UK, but it is a hard market to pre-dict and somewhat saturated."

Versatile has since turned itsattention to other, less fickle markets.Global sales of Adore now stand atover 20,000, with a recent release inAustralia through the highly -rated

distributor Creative Vibe. The compa-ny now has distribution deals in a fur-ther nine countries including theScandinavian territories, Germany,Italy, Portugal and Greece. Alongsidethe second I:Cube album, Versatile iscurrently working Puzzle, the debutalbum from red hot remix/productionduo Chateau Flight.

Problem territoriesIt might have been one of the veryfirst French electronica labels (thenknown as Fnac Dance), but FCommunication still has problemswith certain territories. "Japan ispotentially an important market forus but a very complex one," says FComm managing director EricMorand. "So much so that we have apermanent representative in Tokyowho does a lot of legwork on ourbehalf."

Again, it is the changing marketthat causes problems. "We're strong

Christoph le Breton. "Our interna-tional business is largely basedaround relationships that have beenongoing for years," says le Breton."These are companies that we'vegrown up with."

Although average sales for an FCommunication long player arehealthy rather than huge-averagingbetween 30-50,000 units globally-there have been some notable excep-tions. Laurent Garnier's most recentalbum, Unreasonable Behaviour, hadsold 150,000 copies before its releaseand accompanying tour in the US andCanada, while Analogue WormsAttack by Mr Oizo, sold over 400,000copies-including 16,000 in the US

Still only a niche interest in FranceThe problem in France is not just a matter of the strength of rap, it is alsoa media thing, according to Sony France international marketing managerAntoine Gouiffes-Yan. "With the notable exception of a few radio stationsaround Paris, broadcasters don't play electronic music in the daytime, so itremains a niche interest," he says. "This gives us a big problem in that wecannot establish a strong domestic base before venturing into internationalmarkets. Generally we get better feedback from our international contacts."

Citing the cases of Air, Daft Punk, Cassius and Stardust as being typicalof this problem, Gouiffes-Yan also argues that Modjo are domestically under-valued. "Although the record first broke in France it only reached numbernine in the singles chart," he points out. "It is now number one in Europewhere it has had a much broader impact."

on exports," Morand says, "but at themoment the licensing side is dyingbecause domestic acts are so strong."

Having started out in 1994 usingthe export department of PIAS, FCommunication now has its owninternational department, run by

where the famous Flat Eric Levis adswere not shown. Upcoming releasesfrom F Communication include Bits &Bobs, the debut album from AquaBassino, Lorca's Newcomer andFrederic Galliano's African Divasalbum.

continued from page 8single Little Scare (Love Will BringUs Back) will be out at the end ofNovember all over Europe, withDiamond mounting a tour whichtakes in Italy, France, Spain,Portugal, Germany, Czech Republic, the UK, Benelux and Denmark.

Julien Jacob(sonjenn/WEA)Born in Benin to WestIndian parents, raised inthe south of France andlater moving to Brittany,Julian Jacob is a multi-cultural humanist, poet, writer and musician. Hislyrics are just as univer-sal, while his warm, grainy voice sings a self -

cultures to create a "musicaluniversality". Etienne de Crecy (V2)Few figures can claim to havehad more influence on thequality side of French dancemusic than Etienne de Crecy. The man who signed AlexGopher, produced andremixed the first Air singleand was one half of the duothat made the seminal andcriminally under -ratedMotorbass album Pansoul is

now busy promoting Tempovision, his second solo album, released onV2. Unlike previous de Crecy releas-es, Tempovision is a fairly downtem-po affair and is, in fact, a conceptalbum. Loosely based around theartist's feeling that modern technolo-gy is a double-edged sword, thealbum mixes choice samples from

artists like Allan Toussaint andMillie Jackson with his own, uniqueand thoroughly modern touch.

Geoffrey Oryema(Saint George/Sony)Originally released on Musisoft/SONO last January, GeoffreyOryema's album Spirit was re-released this autumn on the SaintGeorge/Sony label. Oryema's fourthalbum was produced by Rupert Hine(Underworld, Negresses Vertes), andis a soulful, rock -based African opusof songs featuring Oryema's trade-mark high-pitched vocals sung inEnglish, Atcholi (Ugandan) andFrench, against a rhythmic backdropwoven by his lukeme (finger piano).Spirit will be released international-ly in January 2001 with a repack-aged album adding two French titles,a new cover, a remix of the singleOmera John (My Brother John) anda video. Sony Music France's inter-national promotion manager AnnickGeisler confirms that internationalaffiliates have already expressed akeen interest in this album. Oryema

His ownlatest album Production combinesthe sophisticated approach thatcaught Madonna's ear with tracksthat perfectly display his grasp ofdancefloor dynamics and deep, moody textures. The album, releasedall over Europe in early summer, hassold over 50,000 copies so far. A USrelease is scheduled through Sony atthe beginning of 2001. MeanwhileNaive Song, the album's second sin-gle, is just out in France with therest of Europe to follow in earlyDecember. Traditional radio broadcastersare potentially under siege from all

director of Emap'sLondon stations Kiss 100and Magic 105.4.

Chrysalis Radio chiefexecutive Phil Riley, speaking in a NABSupersession on theimpact of new technolo-gies, agreed that "newtechnologies are a threatin the long term if youdon't play a part. If youdon't, your business willdecline-the migration of

listeners [from AM/FM radio] isinevitable."

Playing the long gameHowever, Riley, despite being aself-confessed technology addict, warned that it will take longerthan most people currently thinkto achieve a fully digital world, since most of the new technologieswill not reach a critical mass mar -

and they want it now."David Mansfield,

chief executive, Capital Radio

sorts of new technologies, includingsatellite and cable radio, Internetradio and even WAP mobile phonetechnology. Hence an interest onthe part of most radio groups inlooking at ways to embrace all ofthese new technologies and be pre-sent, as Capital Radio chief execu-tive David Mansfield put it duringhis keynote speech, "in all parts ofthe food chain."

Mansfield noted that as choicesexpand, consumers are becomingmore and more demanding."Consumers want everything allthe time and they want it now," hereflected.

Speaking on a panel entitled"The Threat and Opportunity ofNew Media," former broadcasterturned dotcom executive UlrichGathman, general manager ofGermany -based youwant.com, pre-dicted "some disturbance" for tradi-tional broadcasters facing theadvent of new technology, but also"growth perspectives" as theyembrace those technologies.Gathman forecasted that in the nottoo distant future, traditional radiowill lose around 10-15% of its lis-tenership to new platforms, a fig-ure also endorsed by his fellowpanellist Mark Story, managing

ket point until several years fromnow. "Don't ignore [new technolo-gies] in the long term, but don'tneglect your core business either. Most people will continue to listento analogue radio for a long time,"he told his colleagues.

Riley pointed out that satelliteradio, digital radio, Internet radio, and mobile phone -delivered radioare all incompatible technologies, and some of them might nevermake it to the mass market. Forexample, he dismissed wirelessInternet radio as "a non-starter"due to the cost of bandwidth, andhe isn't convinced satellite radiohas a future in Europe (although itcould become important in the US).

"Just because we wish something,it doesn't mean it's going to hap-pen," he cautioned.

But Peter Waak, who left radiogroup CLT-UFA (now RTL Group)earlier this year to launch his owncompany in Sweden, counteredwith his belief that "the future isnot about either or [any technolo-gy], but about all of them. We willhave all these technologies andmany more."

Emap's Mark Story argued thatit is already outdated to continue torefer to most radio companies as"traditional broadcasters," sincemost of them have already moved

into the new digital world. "Radiohas developed all along the line,"said Story. "If you look at it onlyfrom the transmission perspective, you are missing the point. It'sabout 'delivering entertainment, and the Internet is part of it."

A bit on the sideStory highlighted the Internet'sability to allow existing radiobrands to stream sub -brands. Forexample, dance station Kiss 100could complement its existing mixof wide-ranging dance musicbroadcast on FM with more spe-cialist channels on the Internet, majoring on garage, house or R&B.

This approach has already beenadopted by French broadcasterEurope 2, part of the Europe 1Communication group, which haslaunched two sub -channels on itsweb site, featuring two of the maincomponents of its Rhythmic AC for-mat, R&B and pop. "This way, our

Branding for todayand tomorrow

In a world in which digital con-vergence is taking place, andcompetition growing, the mostcoveted asset that traditionalradio stations can capitalise onis their brand.

As Emap PerformanceNetwork marketing directorMalcolm Cox (pictured)eulained during a panel mod-erated by M&M deputy editorJon Heasman, "building abrand takes a longtime but once built, abrand can help builda bigger business."

NRJ Swedendirector of program-ming and marketingDaniel Akermanwent even further byasserting that, in thecase of NRJ, "the only thing weown is the brand, so the brandis centre stage."

Taking the example ofEmap's London -based Dancestation Kiss 100, Cox revealedthat over one million compila-tions bearing the Kiss brandwill be sold in the UK in 2000.In France, NRJ is famous forexploring all the avenues inwhich the brand can bring inadditional businesses, and thismodel also applies to other NRJstations across Europe.

But Cox brought a note ofcaution to the limits of brand-ing. "Putting a logo on a productis not enough to sell. Your prod-uct has to be as good as any-thing on the market."

Selectivity is of paramountimportance, and broadcastersshould resist the temptation ofputting their logo on any type ofproduct, warned Cox andAkerman. "You have to protectthe quality of the brand and beassociated with great productswhich also reflect the values ofthe brand," concluded Akerman.

Manageabletalent?

The perennial challenge of man-aging air talent was the topic ofa session featuring programmedirectors from the UK'sChrysalis Radio Group (JimHicks), Germany's AntenneBayern (Stephan Offierowski)and France's Fun Radio (SamZniber).

Hicks emphasised the impor-tance of getting to know new pre-senters personally as well as pro-fessionally-he suggested takingDJs out for dinner when theyfirst join the station, asking themhow they like to be managed, andwhat they thought of how theywere managed by their previousboss. He said presenters shouldbe given clear targets and time -frames in which to achieve thosegoals, but also must be made tofeel they are wanted and valuedby the station.

According to Hicks, a cun-ning tactic when conducting a

"snoop" (review ofshow) session is toget the presenter tochair the snoop ses-sion themselves-leftto manage the meet-ing themselves inthis way, the talentwill often be more

critical when listening back totheir show than the program-mer would have been.

Zniber cautioned program-mers about the dangers of hir-ing big -name stars from othermedia who are new to the radioenvironment, while Offierowskiwarned the audience not to for-get about some of the basicessentials (such as a good gen-eral education and good techni-cal skills) when hiring jocks.Offierowski said that the mostimportant quality in any pre-senter, though, was authentici-ty-actor-type presenters whoare not "for real" will soon befound out by the audience.

The importance of great per-sonalities to a station also cameup during a panel entitled"Programming Success Stories"featuring NRJ's mission direc-tor John Peake and CapitalRadio's group programme direc-tor Richard Park. "Great per-sonalities can't be copied-theyact like a portal for your radiostation," said Peake, who con-cluded that the key to stayingnumber one in a market is to"stay focussed. The things thatgot you there will help keep youthere, so don't be tempted tohave a rest!"

Keith Pringle

on the Internet is the UK's CapitalRadio. In the session "So You'reReady to Stream..Now What?" TomLaidlaw, head of programming andproduction at Capital Radio's onlinedivision Capital Interactive, arguedthat radio stations enjoy a headstart on other companies interestedin providing on-line audio streamsbecause they possess strong, estab-lished brands which people trust, they have the ability to cross -pro-mote new channels on the air andhave deep existing relationshipswith the music industry.

Laidlaw explained that Capitalis now moving on from the firststage of simulcating (i.e. broadcast-ing its existing terrestrial radiooutput over the web) to narrow-casting, by providing Capital lis-teners with additional side chan-nels on-line. As previously reported(M&M, July 22) these side chan-nels will comprise three new ser-vices in the shape of Diva (felmale-targetted anthems and ballads),Rage (music for computer gamesplayers) and Urban Grooves(R&B). The sites are already upand running ahead of their sched-uled public launch just beforeChristmas. Laidlow explained thatthe ultimate goal of CapitalInteractive will be the provision ofso-called "unicast" channels, pro-viding the individual user withtheir perfect tailored music mixthrough the utilisation of personal-isation technology.

Personalisation technology is alsobeing used by Keith Pringle'sInternet portal puremix.com (M&M,November 11), which offers con-sumers 40 genre -based channels."The big thing about the Internet isthat it is not simply about sound,"said Pringle, speaking on the "OnAir & On The Web" panel chairedby M&M editor -in -chief EmmanuelLegrand. "There are a lot of peoplewho will change their radio listeninghabits and go to the Internetbecause it will offer something excit-ing they cannot find in traditionalradio. With the Internet, you canreach out on a one-to-one basis in away traditional radio cannot."

Digital radio fights backFor Phil Riley and others who aremore sceptical about the long-termfeasibility of the Internet radiomedium, the future lies first andforemost in digital radio, althoughRiley noted in his presentationthat the US and Europe are onceagain moving apart with the devel-opment of two different digital

standards (IBOC and Eureka 147,respectively).

During his keynote speech,Capital Radio's David Mansfieldclaimed that his company's recentinvestment in digital radio con-firms his group's commitment tothe technology. But like manyother broadcasters, Capital hadinitially questioned the wisdom ofsuch an investment in a situationwhere the returns are unlikely tocome instantly. "We were scepticalabout digital radio," admittedMansfield. "We had to clarify thesituation for our company."

Paul Brown, chairman of theUK commercial radio trade bodyCRCA, who gave a presentation onthe progress of digital radio inBritain, said the two most criticalfactors for the success of the medi-um are new and attractive contentand mass market prices for

receivers. Taking the example ofthe London market, Brown saidthat digital radio will offer morechoice to consumers, with some 30-40 stations available in CD qualityon the digital radio multiplexes, against some 15 through conven-tional FM receivers.

"Listeners with analoguereceivers will only receive half ofwhat is available digitally. That is astrong selling point," said Brown.

But with only 6,000 receiverssold in the UK to date, it is not yeta mass market. Brown says theprice of receivers is expected to fallfrom £299 currently to some £149for portable devices. "Everybody inUK commercial radio knows this isa risky business," he admitted. "Wedo realise that if other Europeancountries stay where they are [withdigital radio] or don't accelerate,we'll be in trouble."

Stuntman Harris lists his favouritesAmid all the new -technologytalk, one of the most entertainingsessions at NAB Europe this yearconcerned good old-fashionedradio station stunts and contests, presented by US consultant DougHarris of Creative Animal Inc. Itwas essentially a high-speed runthrough of the latest contest andstunt ideas from America. Hereare some of the ideas: A "fatletes" Olympic games foroverweight listeners to co-incid-ing with the real Olympic Games, featuring frozen pizza disc throw-ing and the "big belly bounce." 'N Stink For 'N Sync-four lis-teners have to survive life in agarbage can in order to winexclusive tickets/backstage pass-es for an 'N Sync concert. Two breakfast show presentershave to live with each other in adog kennel for two days. The "Blind Date Concert" inwhich the station gives awaytickets for a concert with anunidentified artist, who couldrange from an unknown toMadonna. This is easier with arecord company partner onboard, and can also be a good wayof promoting new acts. Superstars, super cars-win acar to be delivered personally toyour house by a rock star of yourchoice.

Another interesting contestidea was the "MotownShowdown" in which listeners toa US Gold station were invited toa party, and given a list of eight

Motown artists to put in order ofgreatness. If anyone's listmatched that of the radio sta-tion's, they would win $1 million.Although it sounds easy, the like-lihood of this actually happeningis statistically fairly remote, andstations can also insure them-selves reasonably cheaplyagainst someone winning thistype of contest.

One of the cleverest promotion-al/PR stunts suitable for a small -market local station was the con-cept of the "student press confer-ence." This is where a station withsomething to promote (such as thesigning of a new presenter) invitesjournalists from school and collegemagazines to a student -only pressconference. A $500 prize is thenoffered for the best report, and thecompetition itself is then publi-cised to the "real" local newspa-pers, drawing further attention tothe station's announcement.

There were, however, somestunts from the US that Harriswon't be recommending to hisEuropean clients. These includeda presenter receiving lyposuctionlive on the air, a "Torture Tuesday"in which listeners were invited tosuggest ways in which the radiostation could abuse its studentintern, and a competition (fortu-nately never realised) to see whichlistener could throw their pet fur-thest across the highway. Onemorning show host was also cen-sured for trying to obtain a mail-order Philippine bride on his show.

Danishindependent label Bim Barn Recordings thensigned the act on the strength of this dance trackand got clearance to use a sample of Clapton'svocals. The result was a hit in the clubs of Ibizaand the rest of Europe prior to the single'scommercial release. At Spanish national CHRnetwork Cadena 40 Principales/Madrid, musicmanager Jaime Baro explains why their team ofprogrammers picked this song for the the playlist."First of all it suits our format very well," heexplains, "and on top of that it is included on aninteresting compilation album called Bolero Mix17, which we will promote throughout the holidayseason guaranteeing huge sales." Baro also pointsout that "the fact we think that it is good enoughfor our playlist means that there are no daypartingrestrictions. It is currently played about 35 times aweek and it is likely to be a huge hit." RC

PJ HARVEYGOOD FORTUNE(Island)Release date: November 13One of the fewcontemporary heroines ofrock is back. GoodFortune is the first single

to be released from PJ Harvey's sixth album todate. The single, like the rest of the albumStories From The City, Stories From The Sea,sounds more happy and confident than herprevious work. It shows that her music hasmoved from feelings of desperate intensity anddarkness to a lighter, but still serious note.

PJ Harvey has always managed to bridge thegap between the mainstream and listeners whohave more specialist musical preferences such asgoth, punk and alternative rock. With her newalbum, she seems set to make her powerful musicaccessible to a broader audience still.

Good Fortune is an energetic track with apowerful hook that almost invites one to singalong. Henry Owens, programme director atnational UK rock station Virgin Radio is amongthe programmers airing the track at present. The single is absolutely right for us," he says."It has a nice heritage Virgin feel to it, withplenty of references to Patti Smith and Siouxieand the Banshees. It's much more accessibleand radio -friendly than her previous stuff, justa nice pop track with a pop -rock feel to it." MH

Currently playing at: Currently playing at: Virgin Radio/UK;Radio Zachod/Poland; MTV/Spain; VRT Studio Brussel; Xfm/UK.

DANCE

Dance BeatThe weekly dance chart comment by Harald Roth

All the elements appear to be in place for an all -French fight at the top of the European Dance

Traxx chart. While French duo Modjo's Lady

(Hear Me Tonight) (Sound Of Bar-clay) sets a new record for beingthe longest serving number onetrack originating from France witheight consecutive weeks at the top, fellow Gallic natives Daft Punkmove into the Top 10 this week at

five, after only two weeks on the chart, with theirgroovy One More Time (Virgin). The dynamics ofDaft Punk's surge rely on a very good endorse-ment of the track by DJs in the UK, Germany,France and Denmark, as well as entries this weekin Sweden, Norway, Italy and Austria.

Daft Punk look set to stop Finland's pride,Darude, from taking over at the top of the chart.Their sophomore track Feel The Beat (16Inch/Stargate Music) is a non -mover this week atnumber three. Meanwhile, another French trackmakes a splash with a re-entry at number22-Laurent Garnier's The Man With The RedFace (F -Comm.). The track's comeback is fuelledby a number one debut on the UK dance chartsand through charting in Belgium.

This week sees two other Top 10 debuts: Han-nover's Azzido Da Bass with the Stanton Warriorremixed Dooms Night (edel Club Tools) jumps toeight from 11, while Italy's Mauro Picotto movesfrom 15 to 10 with Proximus (BXRNoisemaker/Media). In addition to his home terri-tory, Picotto has been incredibly successful in Ger-many this year.

This week's highest new entry comes courtesyof Public Domain's Operation Blade, a reworkedtheme from the popular movie and a productiop ofthe label of the same name from British superclubSlinky. It enters at 25 (from 122) as the result ofan exclusive UK chart run at the moment.

Germans Piet Blank and Jaspa Jones climbseven further notches from 19 to 12 with BeyondTime (Gang Go/edel), based solely on dance chartperformance in the German and Dutch -speakingterritories. The track is featured in the new TillSchweiger movie which comes out in December.

Irish supergroup U2 are at the top of thecharts for the fourth consecutive week withBeautiful Day (Island). But Madonna, who U2originally ousted from pole position, is mount-ing a strong counter-attack with her new sin-gle Don't Tell Me (Maverick/Warner Bros),which is this week's biggest airplay pointsgainer on the chart, moving up 12 places tonumber five.

Irish eyes are certainly smiling all roundthis week. Ronan Keating's new single, TheWay You Make Me Feel (Polydor), moves up 14places to number 33 while his previous re-lease, Life Is A Rollercoaster, is still holding onin the Top 50 at number 41. Meanwhile Keat-ing's proteges and fellow countrymen, West-

life, are continuing their steady climb up therankings with My Love (Source/Virgin), whichnow stands at number 21 after last week'snumber 26 placing. In the UK market, theband are currently celebrating winning theirmuch -hyped album chart battle with the SpiceGirls-their album Coast To Coast (RCA) out-sold the Spices' Forever (Virgin) by a ratio ofthree to one.

Still riding high after his success at thisyear's Music Of Black Origin (MOBO) awards

in London, where he re-ceived two awards, is CraigDavid. His single 7 Days(Wildstar/Edel) is still onthe chart, holding steadyat number 16, while hislatest offering WalkingAway (Wildstar/Edel) isthis week's highest newentry, debuting at number

42. Among the stations supporting the trackare Edinburgh CHR station Forth FM, Ger-many's Bayern3/Munich and Swedish AC net-work Mix Megapol.

Robert Johansson, Megapol's head of music, says David's current popularity cannot be ig-nored. "Craig David is a bit of a hit in Sweden. So we picked it up-even though it's not reallyour format," he says. The sort of artist whichdoes fit his format is Eros Ramazzotti. "Weadded Ramazzotti this week. It's just right forour listeners and it's a great song."

The Italian artist, for the second week, issteady at number 16 with Fuoco Nel Fuoco(Ariola) and, like David, is popular across Eu-rope, despite singing in Italian. "People likehis stuff. The fact that he sings in Italian isnot a problem," affirms Johansson.

Among the other new entries this week isPlacebo's Slave To The Wage (Elevator/Virgin),which comes in at 46, and Savage Garden'snew single Hold Me (Columbia), which debutsat number 49.

Texas' finest Destiny's Child are receivingplenty of exposure with their single Indepen-dent Women Part 1 (Columbia), which climbs12 places to number 22 in the European RadioTop 50. The track can be found on the sound-track to the new Charlies Angels film.

Tracks to watch out for next week includeDon't Think I'm Not (Columbia) by ex-Excapevocalist Kandi and Danish remixers FunkstarDeluxe, who are hoping to replicate Black Leg-end's success with The Trouble With Me (EastWest) with another Barry White remix, thistime of his classic '70s track, Let The MusicPlay (Edel).

Calls for Swedish government to help exportsby Siri Stavenes Dove

STOCKHOLM - Export Music Sweden(ExMS), the organisation which pro-motes the sale of Swedish musicabroad, is appealing to the govern-ment to continue supporting theindustry. The call came during theNovember 14 presentation of a report, commissioned by ExMS, on the coun-try's music export figures for 1999.

Despite the positive findings, whichshow the export industry made Sk 4.3billion ( 0.4bn) last year, a24% increase on 1998, &MS manag-ing director Christer Lundblad sayshe fears the upward trend may notcontinue. "The government shouldgive us the opportunities to marketourselves as an organisation," heargues.

Fredrik Boquist, managing direc-tor of independent label Amigo andboard member of both ExMS and theSwedish IFPI, agrees: "A lot of otherSwedish industries receive financialsupport, but here music is not seen asan industry," he says. "We can't justtalk about figures. Music can putSweden on the map."

ExMS is founded and financed byIFPI, STIM (the body for composersand publishers), SAMI (the musi-cians and artists association) andSMS (the trade union of musicians),but does not receive any financialsupport from the Swedish govern-ment.

A subsidy from the Ministry ofCulture to the music industry (Fono-gramstonaden) was reduced by 40%this year, making it harder for small

labels to survive."We would like the Industry Min-

istry and the Ministry of Culture toshow more interest in music export,"says Roland Sandberg, chairman ofthe board of ExMS.

The report was released during aDay Of Visions seminar-part ofStockholm's Music Week.

"The fact that we are bringing itup in a scenario like this is part ofour lobbying," said Boquist, sayingthe growth in music export wasexpected: "We know that Swedishmusic has done well-songwritersand producers such as Max Martinand the Cheiron team have had greatsuccess and the debut albums ofartists like Eagle Eye Cherry andA*Teens have done well internation-ally."

NRJ drops RMC bid: Weill prepares to take its placery board Jean -Paul Baudecroux thathe could present his own proposal.

"It wasn't an easy deci-sion for me to make, because I like NRJ and it isa big gamble," says Weill."But for me, this is aunique opportunity tobecome my own boss in afield I enjoy."

Baudecroux says thathe respects Weill's "entre-preneurial choice" andadds that he is sad to seehim depart. Both Baude-croux and Weill dismissclaims that Weill is "warehousing"the station for NRJ until the owner-ship regulations are relaxed. "This isuntrue. We are doing this in totaltransparency," Baudecroux attests.Weill adds: "The CSA has asked for

guarantees and I think we have pro-vided them."

Weill presented hisplan to the CSA on Novem-ber 14 and a decision isexpected by the end of themonth. Weill believes thatRMC has been "under -pro-moted and marketed andlacked a clear focus. I amconvinced this station hasreal potential. With a clearstrategy, we can succeed."

Explaining ' why hewithdrew his bid, Baude-croux says that after the

proposal was made, the CSA pub-lished new population figures byregion, based on the recent census.Although the French population hasincreased, the 150 million (potentiallisteners) ownership limit has not.

continued from page 3

According to the previous count, the addition of RMC's reach to that ofthe NRJ Group's four networks (NRJ,Cherie FM, Rire et Chansons, Nostal-gie) would have put the group with16 million potential listeners abovethe legal requirement of 150 million, instead of 152 million originally.

"We looked at all the scenarios, including the sale of Rire et Chan-sons, and none satisfied me," saysBaudecroux. "So I made the strategicdecision to renounce the deal andstick with Rire et Chansons."

Overall, Baudecroux says he stillbelieves NRJ could have turned RMCaround and he blames the outcome"on regulations that have not beenadapted to the new census." He adds:"Once again, entrepreneurs arepenalised by unadapted regulations. We are moving backwards."

Bertelsmann moves for EMI

involve an offer being made for EMI."EMI is locked into a contract with

Warner whereby it is precluded fromsoliciting a deal with any other partybefore January 31, 2001. But thatarrangement, in the words of a Warn-er insider, "doesn't stop anyone fromtalking over tea and buns." Nor, it isthought, does it prevent EMI fromstriking a deal with another partybefore that deadline, if, as is the casewith Bertelsmann, that other partymakes the initial approach.

Bertelsmann, EMI and Warnerdecline to discuss officially the latestturn of events. European Commissionofficers are also saying nothing. "Ifthere are any contacts between Ber-telsmann and the EC concerning amerger with EMI, they are confiden-tial and cannot be confirmed by us," aspokeswoman for the Commission inBrussels told Music & Media.

Given the "collective dominance"concern EC officials expressed whenweighing up the Warner/EMI Musicmerger proposals this summer, observers question the possible atti-tude of the Commission.

Patrick Zelnik, president ofFrench indie labels organisation

UPFI and a former Virgin executive, who took the lead in the opposition tothe EMI/Warner merger, says hewonders "how a BMG/EMI combina-tion has more chances of beingcleared by European competitionauthorities than the EMI/WarnerMusic merger."

He elaborates: "If you refer to theCommission's statement of objections[regarding the EMI/Time Warnercase], it is quite obvious that whatthey were concerned with is the situ-ation of the dominant position of themerged company and that there wasan oligopoly in the music industry. Idon't see why they would changetheir minds and it would take a mira-cle for the Commission to clear such amerger."

Zelnik does not buy the notioneither that the Commission would bemore favourably inclined towards aunion of the two European musiccompanies, rather than a US and aEuropean company. "If you read care-fully the EC statement of objections, there isn't a single reference to thegeographical origins of the groups. This is not a criteria the Commissiontook into consideration."

continued from page 3

One of the crucial issues is theweight of a combined EMI/BMG enti-ty. For the fiscal year ended March31, EMI had approximately 12.5% ofwholesale record sales worldwide. Inrecorded music, Warner used 10.8%as its share of global music wholesalerevenues in 1999, subject to the samecaveat as EMI. Industry estimatespeg BMG at between 10% and 12%.Thus, a melded BMG/EMI might fallin the 23%-25% range, closing onUniversal Music's worldwide share.

Nick R Henry -Stolz, media analystin the London offices of JP Morgan, estimates that the combined musicpublishing share worldwide would bearound 35% as opposed to 45% forWarner/EMI. "We therefore believesimilar issues on the music publish-ing side could arise, of a limited mag-nitude," he says. He sees one possibleconcession scenario: the British com-pany parting with Virgin Recordsand the American firm selling theChappell catalogue. "In this case,BMG would be an ideal candidate tobuy these assets," he states.

Adam White, Gordon Masson,Emmanuel Legrand and Wolfgang

Spahr contributed to this report.

U2 continued from page 3

really wish to be infiltrated,"McGuinness tells M&M. "They real-ly want people like us that comealong and say, 'OK, let's make a planand let's carry it out professionallyand with some energy'-they arenever the enemy for us. They arevery much partners and colleaguesand I have to say this organisation isbetter than ever and the best I'veever worked with."

Of course it helps that the organi-sation is also the largest record com-pany in the world. But size isn'teverything. Co-ordination and co-operation are equally important. "Atone time Island had as many as 14 or15 different licensees around theworld, so we got used to working eachterritory in its own right," saysMcGuinness. "We weren't able to pluginto any international system such asthe machine Universal have now."

Despite the best endeavours of therecord company, Bernadette Coyle, senior VP of international for Univer-sal's UK labels, asserts that U2's cur-rent chart domination-number onein M&M's European Top 100Albums-could not have been possi-ble without a strong record. "It's notabout radically different marketing-it's about a superb album," she says.

"If anything's been different it'sthat we've all been able to focus on therecord and set it up prior to gettinginto tour mode, which requires a dif-ferent mindset," says Coyle. Thisfocus started on September 4 whenBeautiful Day went to radio prior toits October 9 release. Then U2embarked on an intensive promoschedule that took in a radio concertfor French CHR network NRJ, aninterview with Fabio Fazzio for aradio special on public network RAI inItaly, and opening performances atMTV Europe's Music Awards inStockholm and Spain's Premios Ami-gos, where the group received theOutstanding Contribution To Musicaward. In the UK, U2 appeared on TVshow cd:uk and played live from thetop of their hotel in Dublin for BBC'sTop Of The Pops. As Bernadette Coyleobserves, "the European campaignshave been heavyweight."

Many observers have put theband's resurgence down to a returnto their roots, a viewpoint shared byJeff Smith, programme controller atLondon CHR station Capital FM. "Inrecent years U2 have been constantlyre -inventing themselves. As peopleare rediscovering guitar -led song -writing, it's only right that one of themost inspirational bands of the genrehave gone back to their more tradi-tional sound." The follow-up singlescheduled for release on January 22next year is Stuck In A Moment YouCan't Get Out Of, according to Coyle.

After the second single, U2 willkick off a world tour beginning in theUS at the end of March. "Thoseshows will be followed by 30 inEurope later in the year. It looks likebeing a very long campaign-thereare going to be five or six singlesfrom the album and we would expectto work this record through twoChristmasses," says McGuinness.
