CERTIFICATIONStudents may be recommended by their teacher for Certification at the appropriate level of achievement, according to the School’s curriculum and by audition before the Branch Director. Certification culminates in a special concert and awarding of certificates at each branch. Students receiving financial assistance are required to participate.
INDIVIDUAL AND GROUP BEGINNING INSTRUCTION
AGES 6-12Students participate in a one-hour weekly lesson with peers. This class is an alternative to Individual Instruc-tion in the first year of study and prepares students
with the necessary musical knowledge to enter into Individual Instruction in their second year of study. In groups of 6-8 students (4 for piano), students learn to play an instrument in a supportive and dynamic environment that emphasizes technique, musician-ship, note reading and ensemble playing. Perfor-mance opportunities will be provided throughout the year on Performance Hours and Recitals. Open to all instruments, and classes are arranged according
to students’ ages. Settlement requires students to have an instrument for study and, in limited circum-stances, may be able to assist students in acquiring instruments on loan.
All students are strongly encouraged to enroll in Musicianship (music theory and ear training, ages 9 and older) or Music Workshop (ages 3-9) as an important complement to their Individual or Group Beginning Instruction.
PERFORMANCE HOURS: An informal recital for a walk-in audience. Open to all students at any level with teacher’s permission. Schedules are posted at each branch.
STUDENT RECITALS: Held periodically at each branch. Students appear at the recommendation of a teacher and with approval of a Branch Director. Par-ents and friends are encouraged to attend. Schedules are posted at each branch and on the calendar at www.settlementmusic.org.
CONCERTS AND MASTER CLASSES: Given by faculty and guest artists at all branches throughout

Settlement is proud to provide more than $2 million each year in financial aid.
We encourage all school age students with need to apply. Financial aid is available to all students through completion of high school and through age 23 for voice students, in addition to adult clients of the Kardon Center for Arts Therapy. All students, current and new, who wish to apply for financial assistance must register in person with an adult and present a copy of their family’s 2015 income tax statement (Form 1040) and/or written proof of non-taxable family income. Scholarships and financial aid must be renewed annually.
Contact the director or the coordinator of the branch nearest you for additional information.
