the year and free to all students. Concert schedules are available at all branch locations and online at www.settlementmusic.org. Attendance at these performances is an important adjunct to a complete music education.

CERTIFICATIONStudents may be recommended by their teacher for Certification at the appropriate level of achievement, according to the School’s curriculum and by audition before the Branch Director. Certification culminates in a special concert and awarding of certificates at each branch. Students receiving financial assistance are required to participate.

INDIVIDUAL AND GROUP BEGINNING INSTRUCTION

AGES 6-12Students participate in a one-hour weekly lesson with peers. This class is an alternative to Individual Instruc-tion in the first year of study and prepares students

with the necessary musical knowledge to enter into Individual Instruction in their second year of study. In groups of 6-8 students (4 for piano), students learn to play an instrument in a supportive and dynamic environment that emphasizes technique, musician-ship, note reading and ensemble playing. Perfor-mance opportunities will be provided throughout the year on Performance Hours and Recitals. Open to all instruments, and classes are arranged according

to students’ ages. Settlement requires students to have an instrument for study and, in limited circum-stances, may be able to assist students in acquiring instruments on loan.

All students are strongly encouraged to enroll in Musicianship (music theory and ear training, ages 9 and older) or Music Workshop (ages 3-9) as an important complement to their Individual or Group Beginning Instruction.

PERFORMANCE HOURS: An informal recital for a walk-in audience. Open to all students at any level with teacher’s permission. Schedules are posted at each branch.

STUDENT RECITALS: Held periodically at each branch. Students appear at the recommendation of a teacher and with approval of a Branch Director. Par-ents and friends are encouraged to attend. Schedules are posted at each branch and on the calendar at www.settlementmusic.org.

CONCERTS AND MASTER CLASSES: Given by faculty and guest artists at all branches throughout

Many local vendors offer instrument rentals at rea-sonable rates. Settlement maintains and distributes a list of vendors at each branch for the information of students, but not as an endorsement.

Individual voice instruction is offered to students age 13 and older. The Gleeksman-Kohn Children’s Choir is recommended for children ages 8-14 who wish to develop their singing skills.

PERFORMANCE OPPORTUNITIESWORKSHOPS: Given by individual lesson teach-ers for four to six students. Workshops provide a valuable opportunity for performance, supplemen-tary instruction and discussion with peers. They may replace a regular lesson, or be used as a make-up or rescheduled lesson.
