Question 1: Do you buy music magazines?

The slight majority of people answered saying they don’t buy music magazines (56.67%) whereas (43.33%) answered they do purchase music magazines.

This question won’t help with the magazine production but gives me an indication of how many people buy/don’t buy music magazines.

65

This question won’t be too helpful with my production. The vast majority of respondents were aged 16 which means I should perhaps direct my magazine towards that age group, I should maybe incorporate a more immature style to the magazine so it appeals to this audience.

Question 3: Do you have a favourite music magazine? Which one?

• 14 respondents said ‘No’

• 6 respondents said ‘Q Magazine’

• 4 respondents said ‘NME’

• 3 respondents said ‘Kerrang’

• 1 respondents said ‘The Fly’

• 1 respondents said ‘Enemy’

• 1 respondents said ’Rolling Stone’

These responses were fairly even for each magazine. Due to ‘Q’ being the most popular, I may try and make my magazine resemble the ‘Q’ magazine quite a lot. Some ideas Q have, I may incorporate into my own magazine.

Question 4: Do you prefer weekly or monthly magazine releases?

The results show that the majority of respondents prefer a magazine to be released monthly rather than weekly. Because of these results, I will make my magazine a monthly release rather than weekly.

Besides Oasis, these results were quite close, Oasis were clear favourites here which gives me an indication of what bands/artists to feature in my magazine. Clearly Oasis would be a good band to write about so I will include an article about them for sure.

Question 6: Do you prefer a male or female artist on the cover of a magazine?

Due to these results, I will incorporate the idea of using a male artist on the front cover of my magazine rather than a female. Nine more respondents answered saying they prefer a male to a female on the cover.

Question 7: Do you think magazines should include posters inside?

Most people answered saying that magazines either should include posters in ever issue or should include them ‘occasionally’. Due to these results, I will include an incentive on my cover to advertise a poster which would feature inside my magazine.

Question 8: How many images do you recommend on a contents page?

The vast majority of responses were saying 4-7 images is recommended more so than 0 – 3 or 8+. Because of these results, I will use maybe 5 -6 images on my contents page, an amount in the region of 4-7.

Page 10: Music Magazine Questionnaire Analysis

Question 9: How many cover lines should a front cover have on?

The vast majority of respondents also recommended using 3 – 5 cover lines on my front cover. I will attempt to incorporate this amount into my work and use around 4 cover lines on my front cover.

Question 10: What is an ideal price for a magazine that is released every fortnight?

These results were a lot closer compared to previous questions. Due to these results, I am likely to make my magazine in the region of £1.99 – £2.99. Most probably £2.99 as I initially was going to charge £2.99 anyway so these results have turned out well for me.

Question 11: Should the main image on a front cover always be an artist which resembles the music magazine's genre?

This was a dominating result for ‘Yes’ to use an artist that resembles my music magazines genre. I certainly agree with these results and I will use an Indie artist/band and also have an article relating to that artist/band inside.

Page 13: Music Magazine Questionnaire Analysis

Question 12: How many columns should the contents page have?

The vast majority of respondents recommended 2 – 3 columns to be used on my contents page. I will probably incorporate this into my production for my contents page and use 2 -3 columns.

Page 14: Music Magazine Questionnaire Analysis

Question 13: Do you enjoy reading about successful artists and bands steps to becoming successful in music?

I will undoubtedly include/advertise an article which describes a successful band/artist’s steps to becoming successful. The results clearly show that people find reading about this topic interesting so I am definitely incorporating this idea to my magazine.

Question 14: Would you rather read magazines online or buy an actual magazine from a store?

This question could have been better and isn’t going to help me with the production. However, because of these results, if I was to release the magazine, I would most likely sell the magazine in store. However due to 40% of respondents saying they would rather read a magazine online, I will include social media/website links on my magazine so people can view parts or the magazine online.

Question 15: Which 3 words would you associate with Indie music?

- Boring, earache, rubbish - Very very indie - guitars drums live - Sound, chill, loud - Poetic, Electric, Drums - Indie Indie INDIE - Music music music - Stone Scream Mondays - Punk, Good, Loud - Pure, cool, hip - Oasis oasis oasis - I don't enjoy - Wavy, the dream - Mainstream, decent, chill - Strange, different and good - Wild, alive, motivating - Foo fighters, oasis - Noel, Liam, Gallagher - Cool, Loud, Live- Really really good - Non - mainstream, loud, strange - cool, different and niche - Loud, aggressive, fun - Live, Loud, Oasis

The majority of responses are positive for the indie genre, most use typical words I would associate with Indie rock like ‘Loud’, ‘Live’, and ‘Different’.

I will try to incorporate this kind of style into my magazine (Including articles about gigs/concerts, etc).

Question 16: What do you prefer on magazine pages?

These results mean that I will try to incorporate many images into my magazine as the responses show that images are more favourable than text. Obviously, my articles will need to feature a lot of text, but when a image can be used, I will do my best to use many images that are relevant to an article/text.

These results are quite even. However, a good indication from this question is that the vast majority of respondents answered with either none or no sure which suggests that most people enjoy Indie music and will be interested in an indie music magazine.

Page 19: Music Magazine Questionnaire Analysis

Question 18: Are you interested in hearing about new up and coming bands?

Clearly, hearing about new up and coming bands is an article that appears interesting. Because of these results, I am certainly going to include content related to new/young bands. For example, my magazines will have a consistent article in every issue that includes information about ‘rising bands’ or up and coming bands.

Oasis have once again dominated these results which continues to inspire me to include them in my magazine. Arctic Monkeys, Nirvana and Foo Fighters were also well responded so I should incorporate at least one of those bands into my magazine. Artic Monkeys would make the most sense as they had the second highest votes.

These results don’t give me much information as to what I should include in my production. However the bands that have been mentioned in previous questions, also include in this questions which implies that I should certainly include articles related to bands like Oasis, Nirvana, etc.
