Jesus Christus, unser Heiland Johann Sebastian Bach

Jesus Christ, our Saviour, turned away God’s wrath forever; As His pledge of love undying

He, this precious food supplying, Gives His body with the bread

And with the wine the blood He shed.

Contemplation Alec Rowley Prélude sur l’Attende Domine Jeanne Demessieux

“Hear us, O Lord, and have mercy upon us, for we have sinned against thee.”

O Lamm Gottes, unschuldig Johann Sebastian Bach

O Lamb of God, most stainless! Who on the Cross didst languish, Patient through all Thy sorrows.

Though mocked amid Thine anguish; Our sins Thou bearest for us, Else had despair reigned o'er us:

1. & 2. Have mercy upon us, O Jesu! 3. Grant us Thy peace today, O Jesu!

In Quiet Mood Florence Price

Psalm Prelude No. 1 Herbert Howells

I called in my affliction and the Lord heard me and saved me from all my troubles. Psalm 34:6

Litanies Jehan Alain

“When the Christian soul, in its distress, can no longer find new words to implore the mercy of God, it repeats without ceasing the same invocation with a profound faith. Reason has reached its limit. Only faith can go further.”

J. S. Bach’s setting of the Communion chorale Jesus Christus, unser Heiland (Jesus Christ, our Saviour) sung during the Lutheran service, is from his great collection of chorale preludes written during his years at Weimar, later revised in Leipzig, and known as the Eighteen Great or Leipzig Chorales, the collection summing up the mature Bach’s most profound thoughts on faith and spirituality. Written in a rich and chromatic style, the work sets the chorale melody in an imitative and increasingly complex manner. The melody is heard in long notes played in the pedals under contrapuntal lines containing elements of each phrase of the chorale melody. It’s interesting to hear this great work played in contrast and comparison to the Brahms Fuge which follows: in its harmonically complex and rich texture it seems very modern, in a late 19th century, Brahmsian, manner. The text of the chorale:

Jesus Christ, our Saviour, turned away God’s wrath forever; As His pledge of love undying

He, this precious food supplying, Gives His body with the bread

And with the wine the blood He shed. Alec Rowley was a highly respected English musician and composer, also known as a Fellow and Professor of Trinity College, Cambridge, as well as a member of the management committee of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. He composed a large number of works, among them orchestral works including two symphonies for organ. He was also an author and wrote educational works such as Extemporization: A Treatise for Organists. He held three organ positions in London, most notably St. Margaret’s, Westminster. Jeanne Dèmessieux (1921-1968), one the 20th century’s most acclaimed French virtuosos was Organiste Titulaire at the Madeleine, Paris. A student of Marcel Dupré, she had a brilliant performing and composing career, until her early death. Her music, influenced by the richness of styles current in the 1940-60’s, is marked by lush harmony and a willingness to explore unusual tonalities. beautiful line, and a willingness to explore unusual tonalities. In Attende Domine, one of 12 preludes written on Gregorian hymns, the melody of the plainchant is heard in the soprano voice, accompanied by rich and solemn chord progressions.

O Lamm Gottes, unschuldig is the seventh chorale in Bach’s great collection of chorale preludes written during his years at Weimar, later revised in Leipzig, and known as the Eighteen Great or Leipzig Chorales. This marvelous collection, along with the Clavierübung (Third Part), sums up the mature Bach’s most profound thoughts on faith and spirituality. This beautiful chorale melody, to which the German text of the Agnus Dei is sung, is set in three sections. In the three verses of this glorious chorale prelude Bach invokes the Trinity by utilizing the same structure he employs in many of his tri-partite works: the chorale melody is placed in the Soprano voice for the first verse (God the Father), in the middle voice for the second verse (God the Son), and in the pedal for the final verse (God the Holy Spirit). Each verse is an extraordinary example of text-painting, most notably in the third section where the text speaks of the crucifixion: the harmony becomes quite dissonant and tortured. The ending coda, during which the text asks for peace, is a brilliant improvisatory toccata.

Florence B. Price (1887-1953), born in Little Rock, and a long-time resident of Chicago, was the first African-American composer to be recognized as an important symphonic composer and to have her work premiered by The Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Frederick Stock conducting. After studies at the New England Conservatory of Music and her move to Chicago, she furthered her studies in composition, organ and orchestra at Chicago Musical College, the University of Chicago and American Conservatory with Leo Sowerby, Arthur Olaf Anderson and others. Her work was quickly recognized as important and she began winning important prizes and her work heard nationally. In a Quiet Mood is one of her many organ works, written in her rich and melodic style, setting a beautifully lyric melody over an undulating accompaniment.

Herbert Howells (1892-1983) remains one of the most individual and remarkable composers of 20th century English and Anglican music. His music is marked by a unique and modal harmonic language, brilliant text-painting, a strong element of drama, an orchestral sense of registration and a clear affinity towards the choirs, organs and setting for which his various works are composed. The Psalm Prelude No. 1 is one of six organ such settings. This dark work, full of brooding harmonies, builds to a full organ expression of triumph over despair, ending in quiet meditation.

Jehan Alain (1911-1940) was one of several outstanding French composers and organists active between World Wars I and II. At the Paris Conservatoire he studied organ with Marcel Dupré, and composition with Paul Dukas and Jean Roger-Ducasse. The combined influences of Charles Tournemire (Organist at St. Clotilde), his discovery of Eastern music, and the revelation of playing an 18th century organ, resulted in a colorful compositional turn from the 19th century French Symphonic Tradition. His works are marked by complex rhythms, exotic colorations and intense harmonies. The work eventually entitled Litainies began its life as a piano piece but he soon rewrote it for the organ. with its insistent theme, which we hear at the beginning. This insistent theme is repeated in more intense and rhythmic variations, portraying the soul’s unending supplication expressing the fervour of the Christian soul imploring God in times of great crisis. The work ends on an unresolved chord, signifying that faith continues to silently implore God when prayer is finished. Two weeks after the death of his sister Odile, Alain appended the brief and heartfelt text which we have printed with the title.

THE FISK ORGAN _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________

The culmination of a 2-year project to rebuild or replace the 1979 M. P. Moeller organ, our glorious new organ, built by C. B. Fisk Organs of Gloucester, Massachusetts, was installed September 2004 and dedicated February 25, 2005.

On a bright, sunny day – September 12, 2004 – a huge semi-truck from Gloucester, Massachusetts pulled up to our curb at 10:58 A.M. and after the 11 :00 A.M. service, we all gathered in the courtyard to enjoy Ron Franklin’s BBQ. After lunch 112 of us began to carry the thousands of organ parts into the church. The truck was empty by 9:30 P.M. that evening, and early next morning the assembly of the organ began. About five weeks later we heard the first voiced stop (8’ Octave of the Great) at a service.

The organ is direct mechanical action with electric slider chests for certain large pipes. The handsome case, designed by Charles Nazarian, is African mahogany, the console is quarter-sawn white oak, the draw-knobs are Cocobollo wood, the keys are bone and ebony, the front pipes are polished and hammered lead.

There are 24 voices, 33 ranks, 1,729 pipes, the manuals are 58-notes, the pedalboard is 30-notes, straight and concave. The stop-action is electrically controlled solenoids. There are 262 levels of SSL memory.
