All Understand Piano- Key Center

Introduction

These books are designed to give you solid musical training while you LEARN SONGS.

• Our books support 3 different steps in your musical journey, first you PLAY

music, then you UNDERSTAND music, finally you CREATE your own music.

This book is the SECOND BOOK in the UNDERSTAND section.

• At the back of this book is the “NOTES” section. At the end of each lesson your

teacher should write a brief description in the “notes” section, of the things you

should work on in between lessons. This gives you a clear outline of what to

work on, as well as how far you have come.

• At the very back of each book is a checklist of information that you should

understand before moving on to the next book. And the COMPLETION page,

stating that you learned all of the info on the checklist.

• Upon completing each level/book you instructor will notify the office and we will

send you a CERTIFICATE OF COMPLETION and the book for the NEXT

LEVEL.

What you should expect when your teacher gets to your house.

• There must be ADULT SUPERVISION other than the instructor in the home

while the lesson is conducted.

• Your teacher should ARRIVE ON TIME, and should leave on time.

• Your teacher should have a way to play recordings.

• Your teacher should always encourage and facilitate the learning of SONGS.

• If you have questions or concerns about your lessons please call our office at:

(310) 745-4007

In the ALL UNDERSTAND workbooks,

there is not a designated SONG section.

But your teacher should continue teaching

you songs, and applying the concepts in

each workbook to those songs.

There are a variety of song charts at:

www.allplaymusic.com

PAGE GOAL: Be able to understand play TRIAD INVERSIONS in the KEY

OF C.

UNDERSTANDING TIP:

A chord inversion happens when a note in the chord other than the “Root” note is the

lowest sounding note. The standard chord inversions are as follows: 1st inversion has the

3rd

interval as the bass note, 2nd

inversion has the 5th

interval.

Chord inversions are often written as SLASH CHORDS, a slash chord lists the triad

first, and the bass note second. For example a C triad with the E on the bass is written

C/E.

ACTION!

Your teacher should explain and show you examples of 1st INVERSION, 2ND

INVERSION chords. Then your teacher should help you play, and write, all of the

chord inversions listed on this page and the next.

Play the following chord inversions, and write each shape in the keyboard pic below.

C C/E C/G

D Dmin/F Dmin/A

PAGE GOAL: To understand and be able to play 7th

CHORDS and their

INVERSIONS in the KEY OF C.

UNDERSTANDING TIP:

A 7th

chord is created when you count seven intervals from the chords root and ad that

note to the chord. When you are playing inversions of a chord, and the 7th

interval is on

the bass, it is known as 3rd

inversion.

ACTION!

Your teacher should explain and show you examples 7th

chords. Then you should play

the following chord inversions, and write each shape in the keyboard pic below.

Cmaj7 Cmaj7/E Cmaj7/G Cmaj7/B

Dmin7 Dmin7/F Dmin7/A Dmin7/C

PAGE GOAL: Be able to play and understand and play all of the

ARPEGGIOS in the C chord scale.

UNDERSTANDING TIP:

Arpeggios are the notes in a chord played in order.

ACTION!

Your teacher should show you how to play the chords, and chord inversions below, as

arpeggios. You should play all of these arpeggios with both hands, right hand first,

then left hand, then both together.

Play the arpeggios for each of the following chords.

C C/E C/G C/B

PAGE GOAL: Understand and be able to play the PENTATONIC SCALES

for each of the CHORDS IN THE KEY OF C.

UNDERSTANDING TIP:

The pentatonic scale is a FIVE NOTE SCALE. The pentatonic scale for a MAJOR

CHORD uses the 1, 2, 3, 5, and 6, intervals from that chords major scale. The

pentatonic scale for a MINOR CHORD uses the 1, flat 3, 4, 5, and flat 7, from that

chords minor scale.

ACTION!

Your teacher should explain what the pentatonic scale is, and help you play the

pentatonic scale that belongs to each of the following chords. Then you should write the

notes to that scale in the blank keyboard pic provided. Then you should play all of

these scales with both hands, right hand first, then left hand, then both together.

C - Pentatonic

Dmin - Pentatonic

Your teacher should explain the Modes of “C”, and show you examples on the piano.

Then you should memorize the names for each mode in the “C” major scale, and write

the appropriate whole steps and half steps in the spaces for each mode listed below.

UNDERSTANDING TIP: A mode of a scale is just the notes of that scale starting

from different notes.

PAGE GOAL: Understand and be able to play CHORD SUBSTITUTIONS.

UNDERSTANDING TIP:

Using chord substitution is an easy way to add chord extensions. For example, if you

play a C note on the Bass, and a Emin7 chord with your right hand, you get a Cmaj9

chord.

ACTION!

Your teacher should explain how substitution works. Then you should play the

following SLASH chords and write what the new CHORD EXTENTION SYMBOL

is. You should also WRITE THE CHORD SHAPE in the blank keyboard pics

provided.

EXAMPLE:

Steps to achieving your musical goals!

1. With your teachers help, select a target date to complete this book. Workbook target completion date:_____________________

2. Each week your teacher will make sure you have material to focus on for each subject, and will write what to practice in the space provided next to each subject.

The teacher will check the box next to each subject confirming that they taught you the information listed during that weeks class.

Then the teacher and the student will briefly share what is being taught with the parent.

The teacher will also write the lesson date, and sign their initials showing that weeks lesson is completed.

3. In the days between lessons the student must practice a minimum of 3 times, for a minimum of 10 minutes each time.

The parent must write their initials and the date on the practice page for each of the 3 required practices.
