The grandson of a southern Baptist preacher, Anderson East learned to sing and play guitar at 11 years old while his mother played piano in the church. “I came up in the church, singing in choirs and stuff like that. I always enjoyed being around music, but music wasn’t very prevalent when I was growing up,” East told the Quad-City Times ahead of headlining Daytrotter’s EastFest (no relation). The limited exposure to music he had growing up was due in part to his rearing in Athens, Ala., a dry town until 2004 that didn’t attract much in the way of live shows or support much of a local music scene. But his parents encouraged his interest, giving him a four-track recorder in his early teens. His early experiments led to a love of engineering records, which he studied at school in Tennessee. And from there, it just made sense to move to Nashville. “It was where music was being made,” he told Paste. At first, he spent his time as a sound engineer and guitar sideman, sometimes playing his own songs at the Bluebird Café. That’s where Dave Cobb, Grammy-winning producer of well-loved records by Shooter Jennings, Jason Isbell and Chris Stapleton (with whom East is touring this summer) found him. The pair hit it off and recorded East’s major label debut, Delilah, at the legendary Muscle Shoals studio, less than an hour from East’s childhood home. The album was hailed by National Public Radio and Rolling Stone. “It’s one of those 10-song records that’s damned near perfect,” raved Daytrotter, “traveling through the old, smoky bars of older days and down the twisted back roads of love.” Since its release, East has toured nationally with Brandi Carlile and The Lone Bellow, appeared on Late Night with Seth Meyers, and CBS This Morning Saturday. So while he’s moved away from the music from church that he was reared on in his a small Southern town with no music scene, he hasn’t moved on. “You can’t take a kid from north Alabama and growing up in church– some of that is just gonna seep out,” East said. “I think all that music stems from the same well.” NORTHLIBERTYBLUES.ORG \BLUESANDBBQ @BLUESANDBBQ #BLUESANDBBQ \BLUESANDBBQ HOW TO GET THERE & WHAT TO DO.

“It was where music was being

made,” he told Paste.

“It’s one of those 10-song records that’s damned near perfect,” raved Daytrotter, “traveling through the old, smoky bars of older days and down the twisted back roads of love.”

Since its release, East has toured nationally with Brandi Carlile and The Lone Bellow, appeared on Late Night with Seth Meyers, and CBS This Morning Saturday. So while he’s moved away from the music from

church that he was reared on in his a small Southern town with no music scene, he hasn’t moved on.

“You can’t take a kid from north Alabama and growing up in church– some of that is just gonna seep out,” East said. “I think all that music stems from the same well.”
