Doyouteachhighschoolmusictheory?Wouldyouliketo?EachyeartheCollegeBoardsponsorsacoursecalledtheAdvancedPlacementCourseinMusicTheory,whichculminatesinanationalexaminationinthespring,permittingyoungmusicianstostudycollege-levelmaterialwhileinhighschool.Studentswhoperformwellontheexaminationmayearncreditandadvancedstandingincollegeprograms-bothanacademicandafinancialadvantageforthesestudents.

ThiscourseisopentopeoplewhohavenevertaughttheAPcoursebeforeaswellasthosewhohaveexperienceinteachingthecourseandwouldlikenewideasandinsights.MostAPmusicteachersaremusicianswhoreceivedtraininginmusictheoryonlyaspartoftheirowncollegestudy.Besidesgivingtheseteacherstheskillsandstrategiestheyneedtoteachmusictheorytohighschoolstudentsanddiscussingtheexamination’scontentandscoring,emphasisisonhowtoapproachthesubjectmaterialwithconfidence.

Over100yearsago,anAustralianactornamedF.M.Alexanderdevelopedchroniclaryngitis.Intheprocessofsolvinghisperformancedifficulty,hecreatedauniqueapproachtohowwethinkabouthowwemove.Hediscoveredwearedesignedformovementandthatwepossessanincrediblecapacityforease,balanceanddynamicposturalcoordination.Yet,weofteninterferewithourmovementpotential,duetothestressandtensionofhabitualthoughtandmovementpatterns.

ThisworkshopwilllookatthemyriadwaysChristianworshiphaschangedoverthelastfourdecadesandsuggestpracticalmeanswherebythetraditionallymindedchurchmusicianmaycreateinspiringliturgiesthataddresscontemporarytrendsandtheologicalshiftsinstyle.

Insearchingforbreadthanddepth(asopposedtoquickfixes),thisweekwillfocusoncolorfulandcreativepsalm-singing,theintegrationofworldmusicintotheliturgy,theimportanceofthesolovoice,theuseofsoloinstrumentsandpercussion,theuseofliturgicaldance,awidevarietyofhandbelloptionsandasurveyofnewchoralrepertoire.

Partoftheweekwillbedevotedtotheprincipalservicesoftheliturgicalyear.Usingthelensofaccessibleandmeaningfulworship,theancienttraditionsofthehistoricchurchwillbere-examinedastheparticipantsexplorenewmusicalmaterialsinthehopeofengagingandenthrallinganewgenerationofmodernworshippers.

Zoltán Kodály.Kodály(1882–1967)wasaHungariancomposer,musicianandteacherwhosegoals,principlesandphilosophyservedastheframeworkforeducationalreformin20thcenturyHungarianmusiceducation.Kodálybelievedmusicwasfundamentaltoman’scultural,intellectualandemotionaldevelopment.Heinsistedthatmusicalliteracywastherightofeveryhumanbeingandthat,withpropertraining,itcouldbeacquiredbyanypersoncapableoflingualliteracy.Hebelievedsingingwasinnatehumanbehavioranditshouldserveasthebasisforallmusiceducation.Theresultwasauniquecurriculumbasedonsinging,reading,writing,eartraining,composition,improvisationandlistening.Sincethattime,Kodály’sphilosophyhasspreadthroughouttheUnitedStatesandtheworld.

IntheeventaclassiscanceledbytheCollege,participantsenrolledincanceledcoursesareentitledtoafullcreditontuition,depositandapplicationfee.

Intheeventaparticipantwishestowithdrawtheirregistrationbeforetheclassbegins,theymustcontacttheOfficeofContinuingEducationimmediately.The$50applicationfeeisnon-refundable.Participantsareexpectedtoattendtheentireweek;norefundsarepossiblefordaysabsent.Therearetwoscenariosforpossiblerefunds–openenrollmentclassesorlimitedenrollmentclasses.
