Student Representative Programme------

The Programme

Student Representatives are elected in term two of each academic year, with existing Reps remaining in post for term one until election time.  There is one Student Rep elected from each course and academic year.

The Role of a Student Rep

The main role of a Student Rep is to liaise and represent the views and opinions of students on the course and to feedback to members of academic and support staff via the termly Student Representation Forums.  Feedback and agreed action points are then taken forward to the Board of Study meetings which take place a little later in the term.

The outcomes of these meetings are then published on BIMM’s Virtual Learning Environment (VLE), Moodle and fed upwards to the Academic Development and Quality Assurance (ADQA) cycle of meetings.  A Student Reps from each College are invited to represent the student body at one of the four meetings per term in London.

As a Student Rep you will sit on Meetings and push for changes on your course that the students want to see.  For this to be possible and to meet the full potential of the role you will be the central point of communication for students on your course.  More information on the role of Student Reps and elections will be available as term one progresses. If you are interested in learning more about the role please get in touch with [email protected]

Networking Events------BIMM hold networking events in Term 1, which is a great opportunity to get together with other students from different courses that have similar musicalinterests. BIMM Gigs------Once you’ve got your band together and hadsome rehearsals, you will be able to show off allthe new skills you have learnt at our End Of TermGigs. These will be held at a variety of fantasticlocal venues including, Concorde2, Komedia, TheOld Market and The Latest Music Bar, and are agreat opportunity for students to get some liveperformance experience and put on a brilliantshow for their peers, friends and families.

BIMM Playlist------The BIMM playlist is a showcase of the best songwriting and production talent at our institute. Students have the opportunity to submit their demos to be reviewed by our Artist Development team and a selection of these songs will be professionally recorded and available to buy on a digital streaming platform. BIMM students and the wider music industry are included in the selection process and we see many great artist emerge from this real world experience we offer.

BIMM Careers Support------We recognise the importance of your career development both while at the college and beyond.

Success in the music industry is very much dependent on people knowing who you are and what you do. BIMM is a great place to start building contacts so it is crucial students make the most of every opportunity. Whether it is a chance to perform, attend a networking event or an offer of work experience the more students become involved in the industry the more they will learn about the direction they want to take and have the skills, knowledge and networks to make it happen.

To support this, professional careers advisor, Miranda Glavin, works with all students to build their career skills and knowledge so they are best prepared to navigate their careers in the music industry. Students take part in careers workshops from the beginning of year 12 onwards on key topics such as networking and CV writing and every student has access to one to one impartial advice on their individual career options, pathways and plans.

Whether students need support to plan their careers, help with their university, apprenticeship or job applications, CV writing, job hunting or have general questions or confusion about their next steps Miranda is here to help There is lots of helpful information for students, parents and carers at www.getcareerconfident.co.uk.

Interested in University?------Year 12 students on Level 3 courses should start looking at degrees and attend university open days in the summer of year 12. All degree courses in the UK can be seen at http://www.ucas.com, which is where students will also apply to the degrees of their choice. Students will have support to write their personal statements and make their applications which need to be complete by the end of the autumn

term of year 13.

Interested in Apprenticeships?

------Apprenticeships are advertised throughout the year but students will generally find the best time to apply will be in the spring and early summer before they plan to leave. An apprenticeship is a job with training so we will support students so that they can best demonstrate they have the skills and experience that show their potential to do the job.

Starting a Business?------Many roles in music are freelance so students may well want to go straight into work as a sole trader. Miranda can help students prepare for this route and make sure they are aware of the legal implications. Keen to travel? Many students want to spend time abroad following their college course. There are lots of opportunities for organised trips both working holidays and volunteering as well as planning a solo trip. We can help students plan their time abroad to make the most of their gap year.
