COPENHAGEN - Danmarks Radio(DR) is the latest European publicbroadcaster to revamp its nationalCHR station in an attempt to winback younger listeners.
DR is concerned that its P3 CHRnetwork is attracting too many 30 -plus listeners, losing younger onesto commercial broadcasters such asThe Voice.
Only 60% of 15-35 year olds listento P3, compared with 80-90% of theDanish population as a whole whotune to DR services. P3 controller ofprogramming and developmentHerik Heide admits: "We want tostop listeners tuning into commercialstations-not only the Voice, but oth-er [musically] progressive stations."
P3 is still the dominant outlet for awide range of pop music in Denmark. The station enjoys a massive 27.7%(3Q) market share, which almostmatches the share held by all of Den -

There is both good and bad news in the the EuropeanMusic Observatory (EMOB)'s latest "European RepertoireBriefing 1999." The good news? European repertoire isdominating the charts. And the bad? This repertoire does-n't travel as much as it should.
The extensive study, based on Music & Media's pan-European singles and albums charts and Music Control'sairplay charts, covering the first quarter of 1999, showsthat some 75% of hit music was produced in Europe. Yetcloser analysis shows that most of these titles charting ineither sales or airplay charts, enjoy success in their coun-try of origin but can't cross borders.
France's albums and singles chart mostly to the neigh-bouring countries of Belgium and Switzerland; Italy has afew album sellers crossing borders; Spain is still searching
for pan-European hits; Germany's productions travel essen-tially through Austria and Switzerland as well as to easterncountries; Sweden is the only country to have chartedthroughout Europe. The US and UK remain the mainsources of cross -borders hits.
The studies were originally produced in order to high-light the extent of circulation by various repertoiresources within European countries. This report is a stepin the right direction and, as the EMOB plans to releasesimilar quarterly analyses, the industry will for the firsttime be equipped to monitor the fateof European productions of a pan-European basis.
The next step is to analyse whatstops this repertoire from travellingand to remedy the situation. This isin the interests of all parties-labels,artists, and, in the end, the public. The "European Repertoire Brief-
ing 1999" is available on EMO's website: www.euromusic.com.

Flanders gets an Energy boostby Marc Maes
ANTWERP - Following the debut of apilot Energy station in Antwerp inOctober 1998 by former EMI andDino Music executive Jan D'Haese,NRJ is finally officially launching itsfull network in Flanders.
The Flemish Energy network isoperated by Flemish broadcasterVZM with CGS FM (NRJ Belgique) asa minority shareholder. D'Haese, asVZM's chairman of the board, isjoined by Etienne Rosseeuw (NRJEurope) as CEO, and Pieter Larmuse-
au as managing director.Despite operating under the NRJ
umbrella, the Flemish network wantsa specific local profile, and is under-taking audotorium testing in the mar-ket among its target group.
Aiming at 15-30 year olds, Energywill serve the major cities in northernBelgium with 15 frequencies, and hashigh hopes of success. "The expansionof the network depends on technicalmatters," says D'Haese. "But by theyear-end, we hope to have installedsatellite equipment for five other sta-tions." The Energy network is hoping
to take a 10% audience share withinfive years, according to D'Haese.
Helga Marquenie, radio promo-tions officer at BMG, is keen to collab-orate with the new network. "Energyis unique and differs from the [south-ern Belgian] French -language NRJ-stations," she observes. Marqueniecites Five and Westlife as examples ofartists who have already benefitedfrom Energy's dynamic approach inthe Flemish market. "Even faced with[CHR] competitors like Top Radio orRadio Contact, Energy has managedto carve out a specific musical profile."

Veronica to quit HMG?by Robbert Tilli
HILVERSUM - The VeronicaAssociation has said it wantsto leave the Holland MediaGroup (HMG), which oper-ates CHR station VeronicaFM and Veronica TV, in addi-tion to two other TV channels.
The Veronica Asso-ciation used to be apublic broadcasterprior to its privati-sation in 1995, andowns a minority shareof 35% in HMG. Luxem-bourg -based broadcaster CLT-UFA owns the majority 65%of HMG.
Veronica Association mem-bers have given their backingto an official motion by chair-man Joop van der Reijden tosplit from HMG, of which ithas been a part since its moveinto the commercial sector."Despite these plans, HMGstill owns the rights to use the
Veronica name for two moreyears, along with all of its pro-gramming," comments HMGspokesperson JacquelineHekkers. "Besides, all Veroni-ca presenters both on radioand TV are HMG employees. We can't see how they wouldbenefit from a split."
HMG has also patentedVeronica's famous straplineline "Veronica - The YoungOne" which could entitle thenetwork to use Veronica'sname indefinitely. Moreover,as a result of the 1995alliance with CLT-UFA, HMGhas pre-emption rights onVeronica's 35% stake whichare now for sale.
Hekkers says: "Veronica
will gain financially, and yetit will have nothing." Howev-er, Veronica Association chair-man Van der Reijden has toldhis members that if CLT-UFAaccepts Veronica's conditions,it can buy the association'sstake before the year-end,and Veronica will search for anew partner.
Media insiders seeVeronica's split as atactical move by Vander Reijden toimprove the balance
the power on HMG's four -strong board of directors. As aminority shareholder, theVeronica Association current-ly has only one vote. Onefinancial analyst who wishedto remain anonymous toldM&M that the profits HMGmakes on the popular Veroni-ca TV are cancelled out bylosses sustained by HMG'sother two TV channels, RTL4and RTL5.

A special report from the Transmusicales Festival inRennes, France, by Gary Smith
Perhaps the best news from this 21st edition of theTransmusicales in Rennes on December 2-4 is that the fes-tival has once again asserted itself as being among theworld's very best A&R events.
Thanks to a characteristically eclectic line-up, it is noexaggeration to say that over three days it was possible tosee and hear the brightest new hopes of pretty much anygenre you care to name. However, sticking doggedly to thedancier side of life for now, day one kicked off very nicelywith Bordeaux's best kept secret, Zimpala. This DJ/pro-ducer duo specialise in an "afrofunkyjazzyhouse" which issophisticated but still sufficientlyraw and edgy to avoid any coffee-table connotations.
Public Enemy were still indu-bitably Public Enemy although, ten years on, their sound has notstood the test of time as well asone might expect. On a more con-temporary note local act Ripleycaused pulses to quicken withtheir guitar -based but thoroughlymodern mix of big beat funk, popand rock. Equally splendid, if a little better known, SuperCollider were as off-the-wall and yet straight down theline as ever. Their combination of grungy, funky hip -hopand soul -tinged voice is, when it all comes together, theacceptable face of experimentation.
As far as the audience were concerned Zuco 103 pro-vided one of the festival's great moments. The band, besetwith technical problems, were not convinced. It must besaid that if this was a bad night then a good one might begenuinely dangerous. Their blend of Brazilian singerLilian Vieira and well thought out, rich, intelligent elec-tronic backing makes for some of the most revelatorymusic to appear this year.
Equally revelatory, but for a very different reason, wereLondon Elektricity. Drum'n'bass may have been fairlywidely written off, but their set was proof positive thatthere is life in the form yet. From the moment that theirparticularly jazzy blend of breakbeat kicked in, the hallbecame a whirl of frenetic dancing. Music so good that ittranscends genre stereotyping is a rare and precious thing.
Mexican group Titan have also hit upon a transcen-dental type of sound by mixing guitars with techno and aslice of their own culture. Their energy was astonishing, aswas the quality of the material. Alongside Molotov theband are yet more evidence that Mexico will be an impor-tant source of originality and talent in the 21st century.
Ever the pioneers, Coldcut have now honed their liveshow to the point where the synchronisa-tion of image and music is simply sub-lime. Four huge screens provided thevisuals while two very small laptopsserved as instruments.
Honourable mentions must also go toSaian Supa Crew, the French rap reve-lation of the year. The group effortlesslyproved that there is still plenty of new, original talent in the thriving French hip -hop scene, while Quannum did the same
for British rap. The Egg, tech -house played on real instru-ments with great tunes, turned in another fabulous setwhile Freddy Fresh's musical collage truly brings newlife to the dancefloor.

He may have been seen by some as a pale copyof Prince when he started out in 1987, butSwede Eric Gadd is no pretender to the purplethrone these days.
Gadd's new album, Spirit (released inScandinavia via edel on the Strawberry Musiclabel, partly owned by Gadd, on November 24),is the follow-up to 1997's The Right Way, whichsold double platinum in Sweden, and is beingwidely tipped to take him beyond hisScandinavian power base. It's a trip into whatfor him are new musical fields: heavy disco, rock and acoustic songs, all sprinkled with hisown soulfulness.
The Right Way, a more typical modern soulalbum, received a positive response in the restof Scandinavia and in Germany, where hetoured heavily with M People and where VH1broadcast an hour-long Gadd special.
"Eric is now at the top in Scandinavia,"says Luise Balle, promotion manager atStrawberry Music. "After his success inGermany with the last album, we believeSpirit will be the real international break-through. There's a need for an artist whoappeals to the mature middle-class audience.Gadd is that artist."
Fed up with most programmed music, Gaddhas used real musicians on Spirit. He hasdeveloped his own rhythm guitar work andplays most of it on the album, which wasrecorded in Strawberry Studio at the PolarStudios complex in Stockholm and atManhattan Beach Recording in New York.
Spirit is likely to be released international-
ly next spring. No international deals are yetsigned, but Balle says allmajor labels have takennote of Gadd'sScandinavian achieve-ments so far, and arevery interested in bring-ing him out into theEuropean market. TheRight Way was distrib-uted by edel in Germany, but new deals are nowbeing pursued, andStrawberry has yet todecide whether to sign apan-European agreement or to work with separate licensees foreach country.
The response to Riding High, the first sin-gle from Spirit, has been fantastic, says Balle, pointing out that it reached the top of theDanish airplay charts in a record -breakingfour days. "We welcome all Gadd materialhere," says DR P3/Denmark music controllerMorten Rindholt, adding of Riding High: "It'sfunky '70s -style music which has a naturalplace in our mix." The national CHR station isplaying the track alongside new releases byWhitney Houston, Fiona Apple and Kent.
Says Balle: "We're looking for a companywhich can work with Eric as we work with himourselves-long-term, with an understandingfor and a belief in the music. We must workwith a company which doesn't think only oneor two years ahead, but in terms of a longcareer. Eric is not one of those artists whoreleases one album and then disappears."
Grandi's Exceptional formby Mark Dezzani
Irene Grandi is hoping to follow in the foot-steps of fellow Florentine singer GiannaNannini by achieving interna-tional success with her fourthalbum, verderossoeblu (CGD-East West). Grandi's formativeyears were spent playing clubsand taverns in Tuscany withvarious rock outfits before tak-ing the traditional route torecognition in Italy via theSanremo Song Festival in 1994.
Four albums and careersales of 600,000 albums later,Grandi-who has collaboratedwith Eros Ramazzotti, Jov-anotti and Pino Daniele-says her new albumcontains the energy released after resolvingthe personal problems of being overwhelmedby the music industry machine. "It is too easyto succumb to authoritarian figures in themusic business who want to mould you to theirown model," says Grandi, who explains thatthe colours in the title of her new album repre-sent hope (green), desire for love (red) andtranquillity (blue).
After finding a new manager, signing a newcontract with CGD-East West and finding newsongwriting collaborators, Grandi says shenow feels revitalised and in control of her owndestiny with sights on the international mar, ket. "Music now represents' a joyous way toexwess myself instead of just work," says
Grandi. "The new album has more funky US& UK rhythms. I keep the heat ofMediterranean influences, but the choice of
songs and arrangements aremore international."
The lead-off single from thealbum Eccezionale has been anairplay hit in Italy. "It is a verycatchy and radio friendly sin-gle," comments Carlo Ant-onucci, music director at Rome -based CHR network RadioDimensione Suono, who hasplaced the single on mediumrotation (3 plays a day). "Irenehas adopted a more melodicrock style which compares well
with many of the US contemporary femalesinger/songwriters around at the moment."
"This is a very strong album with good inter-national potential," comments Alda Gandini, international exploitation manager at CGD-East West, adding that it represents a return tothe form of her 1995 best-selling second albumIn Vacanza Da Una Vita, which according to thelabel shifted 250,000 copies.
"Irene has also received attention fromScandinavia and has a strong appeal toNorthern Europeans. This album has all theelements to establish Grandi," says Gandini."She is a very powerful live performer and weexpect her to perform a series of showcases inGermany and elsewhere after the Italian tourearly next year."

KENTHAGNESTA HILLRCS/BMGRelease date: December 6 (Scandinavia)As Kent release their fourth album,BMG Sweden-plus a large part ofthe local music industry-hopes andbelieves that the Swedish modernrockers will cross Scandinavian bor-
ders to the rest of Europe and the world. Sweden'smost border -breaking bands, both today and tradi-tionally, have been light pop acts, but Kent's inter-national progress might open the door for morealbum -oriented bands such as the Wannadies,Motorhomes and the Facer, and underline thecapabilities of the country's rock scene. Kent's ever-increasing live following has brought a steady salescurve for their first three releases (52,000 for Kent,91,000 for Verkligen and 105,000 for 1997's Isola, according to BMG). Like that last set, HagnestaHill has been recorded in both Swedish and Englishversions, and the music is based on riffs andmelodies wrapped around Joakim Berg's plaintivesinging and anguished poetry. Over the years theband have moved from lyrics about teenage sexualnaiveté to the life experiences of a 30 -year -old, themusic beautiful and dark on a canvas of majorchords. The first single, Musik Non Stop, entered at3 on the Swedish sales chart, and high on the air-play charts in Norway and Finland. BMG Sweden
is prepared to build Kent's international profileover several albums, and a UK release for the Eng-lish -language version of Hagnesta Hill is pencilledin for March to capitalise on the positive reactionthere to Isola. F BN
ANOUKURBAN SOLITUDEDino/BMGDutch release date: November 8(international release tba)With her second album, Dutchsinger -songwriter Anouk is cur-rently outselling all competitors in the album chartsthere. It's not hard to see why she's so successful, and why next year's Dutch tour won sponsorshipfrom Pepsi: she's got the vocal talent, the looks and, above all, the right attitude, reflected in herassertive Alanis-style lyrics. Anouk's first album,Together Alone, was triple platinum in Holland, platinum in Italy, gold in Sweden, Denmark andBelgium and reached number 54 in M&M's Euro-pean Album Top 100 for 1998. On the self -producedUrban Solitude she sounds even more self-confident,no longer needing the help of veteran Dutch rockersGolden Earring, who helped her launch. Apart fromthe catchy first single, R U Kiddin' Me, a top threehit in Holland, her honest brand of American powerrock might sound a bit outdated now, although itwill surely help to lift her live profile throughoutEurope. For programmers, there are some nice bal-lads to check out, such as the catchy It Wasn't Me,and the ode to a hero, Tom Waits. MV

DANCE
Dance BeatThe weekly dance chart comment by Harald Roth
The biggest gainers on the entire European DanceTraxx panel this week are Italy's Eiffel 65 withtheir sophomore track Move Your Body(Skooby/Bliss Corporation).
The follow-up to their pan-European hit, Blue(still strong at 11 in the Dance Traxx), moves tonumber 12 after just one week. It debuted onclubplay charts in Sweden and Denmark this week,as well as on some dance charts which also includea portion of sales (Poland/Czech Republic). Inaddition, Move Your Body tops the 12" vinyl maxi -singles sales chart at home in Italy this week.
Paul van Dyk's Another Way/Avenue (Vandit)regains support this week and climbs to number 2from 4. The upsurge is based on dance chartentries in the Benelux area. Another No.1contender is Junior Jack's My Feeling. The trackoriginates from Belgium's Noise Traxx imprintand is licensed to PIAS outside the home market. The track's increase in chart points lifts it tonumber 4 from 6-not bad for a track which hasbeen in the charts for only five weeks.
The European Dance Traxx undisputed leaderfor the past nine weeks, Bob Marley Vs. FunkstarDeluxe's Sun Is Shining, has got a new contenderfor the top slot with another track from... BobMarley Vs. Funkstar Deluxe.
Apparently, trying to replicate the success ofSun with a similar recipe, edel has released a newtrack, Rainbow Country, which is currentlycharting in the UK, Germany and Belgium. Thequestion is, will Rainbow County jeopardise Sun'sbid for the all-time record for most weeks at thetop of the Dance Traxx chart? If Rainbowcannibalises Sun's support, it might mean thecurrent chart topper falling tantalisingly short ofthat record.
If Sun Is Shining can make it for just threeadditional weeks, the Danish production willcreate a formidable new record for weeks atnumber 1 on this chart, which was first producedin January 1997. So far, Sun matches Cher's 9 -week run on top of the charts with Believe (WEA),and is only two weeks away from equalling thecurrent record holder, Mousse T Vs. Hot'N'Juicy's11 -week top spot residents with the PeppermintJam track Horny '98. Only time will tell, and inthe meantime Marley rides high.

AIRPLAY
On the airM&M's weekly airplay analysis column
The Christmas party season is upon us andJennifer Lopez is living it up in the top spot forthe fourth consecutive week with Waiting ForTonight (Work/Columbia). Five live up to theirname as Keep On Movin' (RCA) shoots up from12 to 5. Robbie Williams is meanwhile providingmorning -after music at 4 with She's The One(Chrysalis).
Sex still sells in Europe-as Tom Jones andMousse T.'s Sex Bomb (Gut/V2), the highest newentry in this week's European Radio Top 50 atnumber 33, demonstrates. Mousse T.'s pro-duction of the Welsh living legend is also themost added record this week, gaining airplay atradio stations across Europe but attractingparticular attention in Denmark. Jones' songwith The Cardigans, Burning Down The House(Gut/V2), is still in the chart after 15 weeks, at46. Danish public service station DR P3 (seestory, front page) has added the new track to itsbreaker list this week.
Playlist coordinatorMorten Rindholt ex-plains: "Tom Jones is abig name and MousseT. has done a reallygood job with the track. It's a funky numberwhich goes down wellwith our listener group. We've been playingTom Jones since Kiss(China), and BurningDown The House is also still played on DR P3."
CHR station Radio Uptown is also playingSex Bomb. Head of music Jan Brodde believesthe song is perfect for the station: "The funkydisco sound fits well in our mix. Mousse T.'sHorny (Edel) is a classic, and the combination ofthe two gives Jones 'new life'." Radio Uptowntakes a special interest in the artist. "He iscoming to Denmark next year, and we arenaturally among the sponsors of the concert."
DR P3 is also associated with other big names;the station has just had a visit from David Bowie."We've just finished a David Bowie-themed week.He was in Copenhagen and visited the studio andwe interviewed him," says Rindholt.
The new millennium is the theme for WillSmith's Will 2K (Columbia), which goes up to 3this week, looking like a possible contender for thenumber 1 spot as New Year's Eve draws closer.
US teen queen Britney Spears' latest additionto the world of pop, Born To Make You Happy(Jive), is new at 36, and so is Alice Deejay's BackIn My Life (Violent/Jive) at 41. Moby's Why DoesMy Heart Feel So Bad (Mute) is getting a lot ofsupport from German radio stations and enters
the chart at 42, whileRicky Martin's ShakeYour Bon Bon, new in at43, gives him a reason towiggle his bottom.Martin's She's All I EverHad (Columbia) is alsostill doing well inEurope, at 18 this week.
Next week's chartwill most probably seethe arrival of Boyzone'snew ballad Every Day ILove You (Polydor) and
Dutch dance act Vengaboys' latest track Kiss(When The Sun Don't Shine) (Violent/Jive).

Grainge promoted at Universal UKLONDON - Universal Music UK andIreland chairman/CEO JohnKennedy has named the currentmanaging director of Polydor UK,Lucian Grainge, to the new position ofdeputy chairman, effec-tive January 1.
Reporting directlyto Grainge will be Mer-cury managing direc-tor Howard Berman, and Universal/IslandMD Marc Marot, whopreviously reported toKennedy. Graingeremains MD of Polydorand continues toreport to Kennedy. It is anticipatedthat Polydor general managerDavid Joseph will take on moreresponsibilities.
Universal's distribution, recordclub, sales, classical label, commercialmarketing, finance, legal, internation-al departments plus its Irish divisioncontinue to report to Kennedy.
Commenting on Grainge'sappointment, Kennedy says:"He's been very successful atPolydor and we want to growhim as an executive. I hopehe can help [the labels], and Ican help him with the addi-tional responsibilities."
Grainge was promotedto MD in March 1997 whenhe was the label's head ofA&R. Even as MD, he has
kept a close eye on the A&Rdevelopments at the label. Poly-dor acts charting in the UKinclude Boyzone and S Club 7.
Younger P3 for 2000mark's commercial stations puttogether. Under the new plans, whichwill start to take effect from January1, P3 will be targeting its program-ming more directly at 15-25 year olds.
In addition to younger, fresherpresenters, the music on the reposi-tioned P3 will be more chart -based,with many shows based entirely oncomputerised playlists for the firsttime. However, the station will stickto DR's public service obligation ofplaying 30% Danish music.
Weekends will be the' first area ofthe station's output to be affected, with most existing daytime showseither being dropped or moved to sis-ter DR service, P4, from January 1.
Despite the radical changes thatare planned, Heide insists that "youwill still be able to hear a differencebetween P3 and the commercial sta-tions." He adds that DR has learnedlessons from the experiences of otherpublic "youth" stations which haverepositioned, such as BBC Radio 1 in
continued from page 3
the UK "Personally I think thatRadio 1 went too far with itschanges," he says. "P3 will continueto monitor changes in public stationsin the UK, Germany and Norway."
David Rowley, general managerof Scandinavian Records supportsthe changes at P3. "We particularlywelcome any increase in the amountof dance music being played, becausethere really isn't that much beingaired at the moment."
One label executive notes wrylythat P3 has finally discovered theconcept of narrowcasting, althoughhe warns it will be at the expense ofolder listeners.
Heide accepts that the changesare likely to reduce P3's audiencelevels. "We are going to lose someolder listeners when we run a servicewith a younger feel," he says. "At themoment, the 3540 year olds areserved by P3, and moving them toanother channel [P4] is going to be adifficult manoeuvre."

launching getmusic.com in key terri-tories outside the US," Conroy tellsMusic & Media.
BMG has also announced twodeals with LiquidAudio which willenable consumers to secure digitaltracks through Liquid Player soft-ware for $2.49, or a "buy one, get onefree" package for $3.49.
Despite these deals initially tar-geting US consumers, BMG antici-pates as much as 25-30% of trafficwill come from consumers outsidethe US. Conroy expects the on-lineinitiatives to facilitate the travel oflocal repertoire: "We recognise theimportance of making local reper-toire available, and our goal is to cre-ate as many digital connections aspossible between artists and fans sothat we can market, promote andsell more music to more people inmore places around the world."
In addition to their GetMusicjoint venture, Universal and BMGhave also teamed up to work on asystem for the secure digital down-loading of music, code -named Nigel.Edgar Bronfman Jr., president/CEOof UMG parent Seagram, revealedduring a presentation in New Yorkthat the Nigel system is ready to betested, and that a panel of con-sumers had already been selected totake part in the test, which will com-
mence before the end of the year. E -commerce will be an added feature ofa more advanced version of Nigel, which will be tested next spring."This first test is to see whether thefundamental technology works,"Bronfman explained.
Universal and BMG's partners inNigel are telecoms company AT&T,which specialises in technology fordownloading; Matsushita Electricand InterTrust Technologies, whichmarkets secure digital rights man-agement technology. Magex will pro-vide e -commerce clearing housefunctions. Bronfman added that"more artists than we actually need-ed" have agreed to participate in thetest. Any testing in European mar-kets will follow the US testing.
Meanwhile, EMI has entered intoanother new on-line partnership, thistime with Launch Media. The part-nership takes the form of EMI givingthe rights to its music videos inexchange for Launch equity. EMIGroup chairman Eric Nicoli com-ments: "This, together with the fivedeals announced over the past fewmonths, will give our artists an excel-lent breadth of exposure on the net."

Europe enjoys S&Ma dose of S&M.
Metallica's new live double CD,released across Europe on Mercuryon November 22, had a spectacularfirst sales week in almost all thecontinent's major markets. Atpress -time Mercury had collectednumber one sales chart positions inGermany, Sweden, Norway andPortugal; number two in Finlandand Iceland, three in Belgium andHolland and top 10 placings inSpain, Denmark, France, Austriaand Switzerland. It all added up toa new entry on M&M's EuropeanTop 100 Albums chart last week atnumber two, just behind CelineDion and comfortably ahead of newreleases by top 40 regulars such asBryan Adams and The Corrs.
Mercury is justifiably upbeatabout the band's latest Europeanconquest. "Metallica always doincredibly well [in Europe]," saysMercury director of internationalmarketing Sian Thomas, "but we'reeven more pleased with this onebecause there's lots of Christmasrepertoire around, and it's a doubleCD at full -price."
The album, a live greatest hitscollection, was recorded in April atthe Berkeley Community Theatrein California, and features theextra selling point of accompani-ment by the San Francisco Sym-phony Orchestra conducted byMichael Kamen.
Thomas says the project has ben-efited from the enthusiastic co-opera-tion of the band and their manage-ment, Q Prime Inc, whose other rockcharges include Def Leppard."They're from the Q Prime charm

school of rock bands," says Thomas, adding that Mercury was able tosend European and worldwidemedia to San Francisco for upfrontpromotion when the album wasbeing mixed. "A week prior to thealbum's release, the band came overto Europe and in one week they cov-ered seven countries. In that weekthey did 198 interviews."
While airplay continues to be achallenge, especially at a time of yearwhen radio is, as Thomas describesit, "quite primary -coloured," a singleof Nothing Else Matters has beenreleased in some territories, with thecurrent US rock radio hit No LeafClover to follow in 2000.
Christine Goor, head of Belgianpublic Alt.Rock station BTBF Radio21, comments: "The mix of rock andclassical gives the track anotherdimension. Metallica are popularwith young people and we've had astrong response to our competition, where winners get to go to theChristmas Day performance inBerlin, where Metallica will performwith the Berlin PhilharmonicOrchestra. We're broadcasting anhour of the concert live. The concertis quite unique, and it's fantastic tosee the band playing with such greatmusicians."
Thomas adds: "Metallica have ahuge fan base but their audience isalso varied. If you listen to theirmusic, yes it's rock, but it's alsoincredibly rhythmic. There's quitea groove to some of the tracks, they're modern in their approachto everything and they're alwaysahead of the game."

One of Holland's long-established public broad-casting organisations, VARA, is considering mov-ing into the private sector, and is understood to bein secret negotiations with Luxembourg -basedpan-European broadcaster SBS, which alreadyhas substantial TV and radio interests in theNetherlands. There are concerns that any suchmove by VARA would throw the complex Dutchpublic broadcasting sector into a potentially termi-nal crisis, following Veronica's defection to theprivate sector four years ago.
The case of MTV Italy's terrestrial licencerenewal is likely to drag on for several moremonths, enabling the music TV network to continueon air for the immediate future. In its latestappeal to Lazio's regional appeals court, Rete A(MTV's broadcast partner in Italy) is alleging thattwo members of the media commission whichvoted on the country's eight terrestrial nationallicence awards in July-Alessandro Munari andFerdinando Pinto-had previous professionalrelationships with a number of the other networksinvolved in the awards process.
In Germany this week, Yvonne Malak hasbeen named as the new head of programming atSaarland Hot AC station Radio Said. Malak waspreviously at Radio Gong and Berlin's RTL104.6 and BB Radio.
Expect international labels body the IFPI toannounce shortly the appointment of the newhead of its legal department at its London head-quarters. Hotline hears that the new hire is anAmerican.
Pete Hadfield, co -president and co-founder ofBMG-owned UK label deConstruction, isbelieved to be departing from the company. Thelabel, home of acts such as Republica, changedfrom being a stand-alone unit and was integratedinto Arista UK last year.
Still in the UK, online company Mudhut.co.ukhas signed an exclusive online distribution dealwith Acid Jazz. The deal gives Mudhut exclusivedigital distribution rights to all artists under theAcid Jazz label over the next six years, and includeslicensing for e -commerce and CD compilations.
Oslo Alternative Rock station Radio Tango ischanging its name next month to XFM. There isno connection with Capital Radio's Xfm in Lon-don, although coincidentally Hotline hears thatCapital is currently in the process of patenting theXfm name around Europe. However, a Capitalsource says nothing should be read into this interms of international expansion of the Xfm brand-the company is merely continuing with a legalprocess which had already been initiated by Xfm'sprevious owners.
Unique Broadcasting has brought in theheadhunters in its search for a new managingdirector, who will head the production division ofthe London -based radio production and syndica-tion company. This role is currently handled byUnique co-founder Tim Blackmore, who isexpected to relinquish day-to-day man-agement to the new MD and "assume abigger more 'ambassadorial' role,"according to a source.
Finally, Hotline is sad to report thedeath of John Larkin, a.k.a. ScatmanJohn, from cancer at his home in LosAngeles on December 3. The 57 -year -oldjazz singer -pianist rose from the obscuri-ty of piano bars to stardom in 1995 withtwo gigantic European hits, I'm A Scat -man and Scatman's World. Iceberg, theDanish record label he was signed to,says that the Scatman managed to finishhis third album, Take Your Time, whichwill be released early next year.
