What is a Music Channel Music television(channel) is a type of television programming which focuses mainly on airing bands and artists music videos. Some music channels concentrate on certain genres while other channels air a variety of different music which is broadcasted on either satellite of cable. Most of the music

channels host their own show charts and award prizes. Examples of Music channels: 4Music, VIVA, Kerrang! And MTV.

The internet is the most popular way of an audience viewing new and past music videos. As its fast, free, affective and viewable at anytime. There are about 30 music channels that broadcast in the UK and Ireland which means that social networking sites aren’t necessarily dominating the music industry. As you can see from my survey results, music channels are the second best way for an audience to view music videos, coming second to YouTube.

MTV MTV’s was launched in 1981 and is one of the most well known and popular music channels to date.It is an American basic cable and satellite television channel which is owned by the MTV Network Music & Logo group, a unit of the Viacorn Media Networks division of Viacorn.The original purpose of the channel was to play music videos which were guided by an on-air host known as a VJ’S.( Video jockey).MTV have spawned many sister channels in the US and internationally, some of which have gone independent. Today, MTV primarily broadcast a variety of reality and scripted television programmes E.g. Geordie shore, which are targeted at adolescents and young adults. The first ever music video to be shown on MTV was “Video killed the radio star” by the Buggles from then onward MTV have dominated the music channel industry.

4 Music is a music and entertainment channel that is based in the UK however it is available on some digital television providers in the Republic of Ireland. The channel was launched on the 15th of August 2008, replacing “The Hits”. It is the only Channel 4 branded channel within the Box Television network. It is available to Free view, Virgin Media, Sky, and Smallworld cable. However in April 2013, all box television channels went free-to-air on satellite, apart from 4music who went to free-to-view. Due this decision the channels were removed from Sky EPG in Ireland.

4Music provides coverage for both of these summer Festivals: T4 and V Festival,

they also repeat the highlight frequently throughout the summer.

Viva Is a music video and entertainment channel in the UK and Ireland. The channel was launched on the 26th of October 2009 by Alexandra Burke. This channel replaced

TMF and is owned by “Viacom International Media Network Europe” and

was the first channel from MTV that appeared on Freeview.

Was originally a Germany channel. The first Music video to be shown on Viva

was “The Spell" by Alphabeat on The Official UK Chart Show Top 20. It was originally broadcasted for twenty four

hours a day until it was removed from he schedule. It now only shows from 9am to

3pm.

Kerrang is a digital television station owned by Box Television, which is loosely connected to the magazine” Kerrang!. As of 2005 all of its programmes content is music videos, the majority of which are

open scheduled. The stations playlist is mainly metal , pop

punk and state punk music The station unusually guarantees to play a requested video, unlike other where a

voting system is in place. However it takes some time for the video to be

played.
