MUSIC AT STONY BROOK H 2017–2018 CONCERT SEASON

9

The 2017–18 academic year ushers in the 50th anniversary of Stony Brook University’s Department of Music — a vigorous, thriving home for nearly 50 faculty in the areas of ethnomusicology, music history, theory, composition and performance, and approximately 350 students who are matriculated into one of eight degree programs.

Stony Brook music is a magnet for thousands of community members within and outside the University.

Every year, the department produces more than 300 events — including performances, lectures, colloquia and lecture-recitals. Its 14 ensembles perform a wide range of music: Baroque to music written yesterday; largely improvised jazz music to music that’s not written at all.

In 1962, Music was an offshoot of the Department of Fine Arts. At that time, students could only earn a BA degree and take classes with three music faculty members. Five years later, Stony Brook Music became an independent department that swelled to 12 faculty, and by 1969, added master’s degree programs in composition, musicology and performance.

In those early days, the department established core values that continue to the present day. Founding chairman, composer and musicologist Billy Jim Layton envisioned a place where contemporary music would be nurtured and prized, one where composers, musicologists and performers would work together harmoniously to create an integrated learning and research environment.

Critical faculty-staff expansions occurred

during the late 1960s and 1970s, leading to the development of doctoral programs in 1978. The department today competes with the finest music institutions in the world, thanks to a senior administration that values music, and aided by its generous donors, including the Staller family and many others. The opening of the Music wing of the Fine Arts Center in 1975 (one of the two buildings was renamed the Staller Center in 1988), provided the department with much-needed facilities.

With our distinguished faculty, the Department of Music has established a national reputation for outstanding education in composition, music history and theory, and musical performance. Establishment of the pre-college division in 1996, and the addition of classes for younger children and an adult chamber music program, have provided further outreach and training to the community, serving musicians from the ages of 5 to 75.

Many faculty have found a home here for decades, including musicologist Sarah Fuller, pianist Gilbert Kalish, conductor and Verdi scholar David Lawton, and composer Peter Winkler. They provide the continuity that links our past and our present.

As is evident in this brochure, the department continues its tradition of offering performances in the music of many genres and periods. We are especially pleased to welcome alumna Christine Goerke, regarded as one of the leading Wagnerian sopranos in the world, to perform with the Stony Brook Symphony Orchestra on December 9, 2017. We invite you to come to the Main Stage and Recital Hall throughout the year to celebrate 50 years of fine music at Stony Brook University.

COMMUNITY MUSIC PROGRAMS

18

Enrichment is at the core of Stony Brook University’s Community Music Programs, characterized by a commitment to education, accessibility and community. Our programs are designed for all ages, from children to adults, and offer access to conservatory-level music instruction from one of the nation’s premier collegiate training grounds for musicians. With stellar faculty and resources, the Community Music Programs are equipped to broaden your musical skills, showcase your musical growth and above all, instill a lifelong love of music.

CHILDREN’S MUSIC PROGRAM (PRE-K THROUGH 3RD GRADE)In the Stony Brook Children's Music Classes, children learn the basics of pitch, rhythm and notation through games and exercises involving singing and physical movement. By developing their musicianship at an early age, students will be in a better position to begin their formal musical study with deeper understanding and skill.

YOUNG ARTIST PROGRAM (6TH THROUGH 12TH GRADE)The Young Artist Program (formerly the Pre-College Division) is aimed at talented young musicians who are looking for exciting, new experiences to enrich their musical training. Students can choose to focus on jazz improvisation or classical chamber music and participate in performances and coachings alongside a rich curriculum of creative and informative offerings. Students can try their hand at composition, delve into the complexities of music theory to better understand the masterworks, and develop their musical ears through aural skills courses. Not only will students emerge as stronger musicians, they also will have a leg up in college applications.
