MUSIC AS PRAYER

A Catholic View about Learning and Teaching

Catholic Christian Story and TraditionOf the ninety times Jesus is addressed directly in the Gospels, sixty times he was called ‘Teacher’. This was how the disciples referred to him. Jesus himself used the term when he said, “You call me Teacher and Lord, and rightly so, for that is what I am” (John 13:13). From the very beginning of Christianity, the Christian community has been engaged in teaching. The person of the teacher is integral to the project of teaching, for as Paul VI reminds us:

Modern [people] listen more willingly to witnesses than to teachers, and if [they] do listen to teachers it is because they are witnesses (EvangeliiNuntiandi, 1975, n.41).

WE AS TEACHERS NEED TO JOYFULLY PARTICIPATE SO THAT OUR STUDENTS WILL TOO

Jesus loves me, when I bad.Even though it makes him sad.Jesus loves me, when I’m when I’m goodWhen I do the things I should

I got this feeling inside my bonesIt goes electric, wavy when I turn it onAll through my city, all through my homeWe're flying up, no ceiling, when we're in our zone

I got that sunshine in my pocketGot that good soul in my feetI feel that hot blood in my body when it drops, oohI can't take my eyes up off it, moving so phenomenallyRoom on lock the way we rock it, so don't stop

DANCING GENERATIONMatt Redman

What the Bible says:

Psalm 95:1Oh come, let us sing to the Lord; let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation! Psalm 104:33I will sing to the Lord as long as I live; I will sing praise to my God while I have being. Psalm 150:4Praise him with tambourine and dance; praise him with strings and pipe!

What the Catechism says:

1156 "The musical tradition of the universal Church is a treasure of inestimable value, greater even than that of any other art. The main reason for this pre-eminence is that, as a combination of sacred music and words, it forms a necessary or integral part of solemn liturgy."20 The composition and singing of inspired psalms, often accompanied by musical instruments, were already closely linked to the liturgical celebrations of the Old Covenant. The Church continues and develops this tradition: "Address . . . one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with all your heart."

"He who sings prays twice.”

CATECHISM OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH

What the Australian Bishops Conference says:

• The music should enable the fostering of participation• The technical aspects of musical language – melody, rhythm,

pitch etc. / instrumentation/ and accompanimental stylesmust enable participation.

• Musical style must promote a sense of the “sacred” and avoid the profane;

• Music must reflect the ideals of true art and beauty.• Music must properly support text being sung, with the

proper relationship of verbal and music accents etc.

AUSTRALIAN BISHOPS CONFERENCE

What the Sacrosanctum Concilium says:

The Church acknowledges Gregorian chant as specially suited to the Roman liturgy: therefore, other things being equal, it should be given pride of place in liturgical services.

But other kinds of sacred music, especially polyphony, are by no means excluded from liturgical celebrations, so long as they accord with the spirit of the liturgical action.

CONSTITUTION ON THE SACRED LITURGY SACROSANCTUM CONCILIUM

What the Directory of Masses with Children says:

The principles of full and active conscious participation are even more important for Masses celebrated with children (DMC 22)

Singing is to be especially encouraged in every way for Masses with children because of their special affinity for music (DMC 30)

THE DIRECTORY OF MASSES WITH CHILDREN

What the GIRM says:

The Apostle Paul instructs the faithful who come together as one to sing together psalms, hymns and spiritual canticles (39)

Singing is the sign of the hearts joy! (Acts 2:46)

Greater importance should be attached to the use of singing in the celebration of the Mass, with due consideration of the cultures and abilities of the people (40)
