Music and art programsWe offer fee-for-service music and art programs for children and youth with special needs, up to the age of 21 and their siblings.

Our staffAll programs are run by accredited music therapists and teachers, and professional artists who specialize in designing and leading programs.

Confirming your child’s spotAfter we receive your enrollment form, you will receive a confirmation and payment receipt in the mail, or we may call you to find out more specificinformationaboutyourchild.NewparticipantswilleitherattendaMusicTherapyAssessmentoraProgramOrientationVisit(forartprogramsonly).Programsmaynotrunifaminimumenrollmentlevel is not achieved. We will confirm this with you a minimum of two weekspriortothestartoftheseason.Ifprogramsarefull,youwillbeinformed that your child is on the waitlist for the next available spot.

Music

Music therapy assessment

Assessment is the first step in our music process. It allows a chance to understand how the client functions within a musical environment and how music can help realize their potential. To enquire about music therapy assessment details please contact the program administrator.

Age up to 21

After registration, you will be called directly to schedule the assessment

Music therapy

Musictherapyisusedtopromotethechild’scognitive,social,physical,and psychosocial health and wellbeing. Accredited music therapists use music and musical elements to encourage self-awareness, creative expression, communication and learning. In group therapy settings, music is also used to help facilitate interaction with peers.

Adapted music education

Learn to play an instrument! Clients can choose from a variety of traditional and adapted instruments and innovative music technology. Instruments include:theVirtualMusicalInstrument(VMI)*,piano,guitar,voice,violin,percussionandukulele.Differentteachingmethodsareused,includingelementsoftheSuzukimethodandtheFigurenotesnotationsystem.

*TheVMIismusicsoftwaredevelopedatHollandBloorview.TheprogramallowsmusicianstoseethemselvesonaTVscreenwithcolourfulshapesandobjectsthatmakedifferentmusicalsoundswhentouched.Whenthemusician moves through the shapes on the screen, music is produced.

Music Together® within therapy group*

For young children, siblings and their parents, this group program helps children with special needs communicate, improve focus, self-control and interact with their peers in a safe and rewarding music therapy setting.

The sessions must be completed within a single season and cannot be carried over to the next season. At the beginning of a season, the music instructorortherapistwilltalktoyouaboutoptionsforusingthemake-upweek.

Building community music group

Takingplaceduringprofessionaldevelopmentweekends,whenothermusicprograms are off, this is a fun, musician-led group offering participants opportunity to meet others, sample new instruments, explore interests and jam to a variety of musical styles. An assessment is not required for this program.

Arts

Drum circle

Come together in a circle of rhythm, rhymes, beats, friends and folly. Participants will have the opportunity to play with a range of percussive devices.Theprogramtakesplaceinthestudiooroutside,weatherpermitting.

Drum and dance

This program offers an opportunity for playful exploration of music, movement and dance. While having opportunity to play with rhythm and beats of drumming, participants can express themselves through movement and music appreciation.

Art Program Orientation VisitsTheProgramOrientationVisitisfornew(i.e.thechildhasneverparticipatedinaHollandBloorviewartprogrambefore)participantsregisteringinartprograms. All new participants will be scheduled to come in for a visit, meet with our team and see the program space. It’s an opportunity for us to provide families with an overview of the program and ensure that we can properly meet your child’s needs. These visits help us learn how to provide the best possible experience for your child in our unique program environment.

Dance theatre

Participants will enjoy being creative together through a playful exploration of movement, dance, drama and visual art. At the end of the session, a performance-sharing piece will celebrate this warm and inclusive social opportunity for self-expression.

Arts xpress

Interact and play through music, visual arts, drama, stories and sensory activities.

Paint and clay

Artists offer ceramics and painting to the participants in a dynamic environment encouraging individual creativity and imagination.
