• Composed of muscle cells and tissues held tightly together in bundles
• There are more that 600 muscles in our body and make up more than half of our body weight
• Movement is brought about by the contraction and relaxation of muscles
PROPERTIES OF MUSCLES
Contractility
- able to become shorter and thicker
PROPERTIES OF MUSCLES
• Extensibility and elasticity– Ability of
muscles to be stretched and to return to their original form
PROPERTIES OF MUSCLES
• Irritability– Contraction of
muscle stimulated by several stimuli like heat, light, chemical pressure and electricity
KINDS OF MUSCLE(BASED ON ACTION)
• Voluntary Muscles
- they can be move at will
KINDS OF MUSCLE(BASED ON ACTION)
• Involuntary muscle
- cannot be moved intentionally
TYPES OF VOLUNTARY MUSCLES
• Skeletal muscles
- attached to the skeleton
- they are made to contract and move the skeleton whenever the person wants
TYPES OF VOLUNTARY MUSCLES
• Striated muscles
- appear to have stripes or striations
- a combination or light and dark muscle
TYPES OF INVOLUNTARY MUSCLES
• Smooth muscle
- found on the muscles of the intestines, brain and other organs
- without striations
TYPES OF INVOLUNTARY MUSCLES
• Cardiac muscle
- muscle of the heart
- striated but involuntary
TENDONS• A tissue that is
responsible for attaching the muscle to the bones
