Without music life would be a mistake.

    Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzsche

    Course Mission

I hope that by registering for this class, you agree with Nietzsche. Life is better with music in it, and thisclass should help you to be more fluent in music notation, theory and performance, hopefully improvingyour relationship with music and hence, your quality of life. The course will focus on helping you to readand write musicfluently. It is meant to introduce non-music majors to basic notation and performanceskills, and to prepare interested students for further study in the music theory curriculum.

    Course Policies

I assume that you are here to learn. I want to help you in that quest, so I will expect and demand a fewthings from you to help you do your best work:

1 Attendance and participation. A wise person once said, Ninety percent of life is showing up. If youare in class, on time, prepared to learn, youll do well. If you are PREPARED when you come to class on

time, youll do really well and have fun. Dont let yourself get behind, because it will be nearlyimpossible to catch up, especially in a 6-week term! Read material before coming to class. Come withquestions and ask, participate, cogitate, and LEARN!

2 I expect neat, complete work, handed in on time. I have found it necessary to implement a strictpolicy of NO LATE ASSIGNMENTS. Homework assignments must be turned inbeforetheyre due or INCLASS on the due date. Late assignments will get a zero. If you know youll miss class, hand inassignments BEFORE you go, not after. Exceptions to this policy are rare: serious illness, a death in thefamily, etc.

3 You take responsibility for your own learning. This includes knowing when assignments are due, when tests are, etc., and asking questions for clarification whenever needed.

Homework (Chapter Review Exercises in the Music Kit Workbook)You will have lots and lots of homework in this class. The homework you will hand in will be a small partof the work you should do to gain fluency with these skills. That is, you should read and complete thework in the chapter even though you will only hand in the Review Exercises at the end of each chapter. These assignments will be the key to your success in this class. If you do them, youll gainfluency(remember that important word) with these concepts so that theyll be useful to you in your lives asmusicians. They will also make up a significant portion of the point total in the class. Remember, theymust be handed in ON TIME.

Workbook Drills and Rhythm Reader Drills (on the Music Kit CD Rom)**USE OF THIS ISOPTIONAL**

These drills will help to solidify the concepts we learn in class by giving you the chance to try them onyour own. We learn by doing, especially in music.

FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS BELOW VERY CAREFULLY. I have taught this class a number of timesnow and there are always problems with the CD Rom. Every time I have taken a student to the librarycomputer lab and tried the program there, following the instructions below, it has worked. EVERY TIME!Having said that, if you do experience problems, please let me know. I am happy to help.

Drop-down menus at the top contain the Workbook and Rhythm Reader assignments

**SOME TIPS ON USING THE MUSIC KIT CD ROM**

Follow the installation instructions with your CD very carefully!!! Dont try to open the MUSIC KIT on the CDyou need to copy it to your computer You will always need the CD inserted in the computer in order for this program to work Unless you have your own computer, you need an external drive (flash, pen, etc.) on

    which to save your files

Remember to choose the score file on your external drive every time you use the CD On the rhythm assignments, make sure to hold your space bar down for the full duration

of the note, not just a tap at the beginning of the note

Contact me with any problems. Any time students had problems in the past, it wasalmost always because they didnt follow the installation instructions correctly

**A NOTE ON THE SCORE FILE ON THE CD ROM**

Whenever you open up the music kit on your computer, you will be asked to choose the scorefile. You need to title this file with your FIRST AND LAST NAME. Thus score file is essential for you toreceive credit for the work you do on the CD Rom.

On the schedule below, there are times throughout the semester when I ask you to email me yourscore file. This will show me how youve been doing with the drills and Ill take the score for yourWorkbook Drills/Quizzes and Rhythm Reader Drills/Quizzes from this file. I will only take your BESTSCORE on these drills, which you may repeat as many times as you wish. All drills listed up to that pointon the schedule must be completed by the time you email me your file.

    Labs

There will be two labs:1 Transcribe a melody

    2 In-class Performance

Each lab will be described in more detail as they are assigned.

    Attendance/participation

You are expected to be in class every day, on time, ready to participate in the class. Absences and/orpersistent tardiness, or doing anything in class besides participating will affect your grade. Even if youare acing the course and have excessive attendance problems, it may result in a failing grade.
