The frst step is to recruit more male and minority nurses into nursing school.
This requires an evolution o culture at lower levels o education, even at the
youngest o ages. Most children's books ocus on a Caucasian, emale character
when reerencing a nurse, either through the use o she or through illustration.
This orms a persistent stereotype at a very young age that nursing is a eminineproession or white emales. This needs to change.
!n high school, guidance counselors oten play a huge role in helping students
decide their uture career. Thereore, they should defnitely play a role in making
sure men and other minorities are aware that nursing is a proession that can
o"er lots o benefts or them. #imilarly, $ob airs should have a table that equally
represents male and minority nurses, and preerably have recruiters rom these
backgrounds.
%ursing schools should highlight images o male and minority nurses, and also
include inormation on their webpages about the versatility o nursing as a
proession. %ursing no longer means $ust at the bedside, there are lots o
leadership positions and even opportunities to run your own clinic as a nurse
practitioner. &ack in ((), the *regon Center or %ursing launched a campaign
titled +re ou Man -nough To &e + %urse which tried to break the stereotype
against men in nursing.
