Principal’s page As we embark on Term 3, I am extremely thankful that we have been able to minimise the spread of Covid-19 in South Australia, and can still enjoy face to face engagement with our students, families and the community. I have been in contact with colleagues in Victoria and NSW recently that were part of our Social Ventures Australia partnership, to give moral support and encouragement to stay positive. Last term I also shared the resources and processes we developed for online and blended learning and they were very gratefully received.

Our MBHS babies have arrived in the last couple of weeks, and they are all girls! Congratulations to:

Brooke and Jarrad Goyne on the birth of Lutsia Rain Blume on July 7, Rhiannon M-P and Cameron on the birth of Elke Jo Averay on July 9, and Kara and James McLaren on the birth of Neve Monica on July 22.

We wish all three families the very best as they delve into this wonderful time with their young ones.

At the end of last term we were delighted to have secured two entries out of the nine places in the state finals of Shark Tank, which were conducted on-line for the first time. Nate Trewin placed second in the general category for his eRacing business, and Riley Lienert, Mitchell Lavery and Khendrick Dela Cruz placed third for their STEM innovation project ‘Betta Livin’. Our students continue to surprise and impress us with their creative thinking and dedication to developing entrepreneurial pathways. I couldn’t be more proud!

Speaking of pride, I also want to acknowledge and congratulate Luke Starczak on gaining a place in the highly sought after and very prestigious Google for Education Certified Innovator Program. Participants from all over the world pitched their ideas for using technology to solve big problems that will transform educational opportunities for students. Luke’s challenge is ‘How do we transform and redefine learning activities to allow students to better transfer knowledge and skills to other areas of the curriculum and their lives?’ This will be ground breaking research and Luke will share more about his challenge in a future newsletter.

This month I have chosen Ari Rigney’s painting to showcase in my office. Ari explained the story of the painting – the connection of family gathering together. It is a striking piece of art that evokes emotion through colour and movement. Well done Ari!

Entrepreneurial Learning by Tiahne Rowe

As we welcome students back to the new term, we must congratulate our students for their OUTSTANDING achievements in the University of Adelaide’s Shark Tank eSchool program. Our Year 10 Shark Tank students participated in the semester-long program which required them to use design thinking processes to create a solution to a problem that could be turned into a business venture. Two semi-finalist teams from each school pitched via Zoom to an external panel of judges for the semi-finals and both Murray Bridge High School teams made it through to the finals! The top 3 teams from each category: General Innovation, Environmental Innovation, Santos STEM Innovation, pitched (via Zoom) on the last day of Term 2. Our finalists were:

‘Australia eRacing’ by Nate Trewin – 2nd Place – General Innovation ‘Betta Livin’ by Mitchell Lavery, Khendrick Dela Cruz and Riley Lienert – 3rd Place – Santos STEM Innovation. Each team had to present their 3-minute pitch to the judges which was followed by 2 minutes of question time. This was a challenging process and the students presented brilliantly in front of University staff and Santos representatives. Well done to these teams for their achievements. We would like to congratulate all students who participated in the Shark Tank eSchool program last semester and wish them luck on their future ventures.

Pedal Prix Update 2020 by Gilbert Tuazon With round 1 (Mt Gambier), 2 (Loxton) and 3 (Adelaide Race 1) all cancelled due to Corona Virus, it seemed that Murray Bridge High School Pedal Prix Team could maybe have a glimmer of hope to race, for the first time in 2020, at Adelaide Race 2 in August. Unfortunately, due to the explosion of COVID cases in Victoria, the associated risks of relaunching the 2020 Pedal Prix season were far too great. During the midyear holidays the Australian International Pedal Prix committee met again to discuss strategies to allow racing to recommence in SA. The hope that teams were given in June was swiftly quashed by the AIPP Chairman’s announcement that the series was to be “…cancelled due to the impact and limitations imposed by COVID-19”. Whilst this is a huge blow for the sport, sponsors, schools, teams etc, it is (arguably) the safest path to take at this time. A significant number of the SA series participants are from over the border in Victoria, namely one of the heaviest hitters in the series in Wattle Racing. It would certainly be a non-contest if one of the major competitors in both of the Adelaide races and the Murray Bridge 24hr race were unable to attend. The cancellation of the entire 2020 season is disappointing for us all, but this does not mean that the Pedal Prix program at MBHS stops. Our team continues to be busy repairing trike fairings and fitness training on the stationary bikes, due to the Pedal Prix subject expectations. One day the chaos caused by COVID will lift and our team will be ready to go. For all of our sakes in the Pedal Prix community, we hope 2021 will be our year to return to normality. Our Year 10 team will soon have the trike repairs complete. This will mean that the team can restart our after school training regime. The current progress suggests that the MBHS trikes will be ready to train with by Week 4 or 5 in Term 3. All students interested in participating in 2021 will be welcome to “come and try” as soon as we are ready. This includes all students from Year 8 to Year 12. With the return to trike training comes the shift in focus moving away from the (Cancelled) 2020 Murray Bridge 24hr race, and moving to preparing our MBHS team for a flying start to 2021.
