Murders and Non-Fatal Shootings Trend
2015 Annual Report
Report Overview
● This report provides analysis of murders and non-fatal shootings in New Orleans
during 2015
● It examines the number of incidents and victims, the contextual environment of
incidents, modality of violence, characteristics of victims, and characteristics of
arrested suspects in cleared cases
● These factors were analyzed geographically to highlight differences between the
NOLA FOR LIFE target areas and the city as a whole:
o Behrman Area
o Central City
o Little Woods
o St. Roch Area
● The data was collected from several datasets and databases maintained by the New
Orleans Police Department, and the analyses were conducted by staff in the Mayor’s
Office of Criminal Justice Coordination

Examination of Target AreasSocioeconomic Indicators
• The average annual household income is more than 40% less in the Target Neighborhoods than the citywide
comparison ($35,976 vs. $60,280)
• A higher proportion of residents in Central City and the St. Roch Area are not earning a salary, wage, or self-employed
income when compared to the Citywide benchmark (+14 and +15 percentage points respectively)
• A higher proportion of residents in Central City and the St. Roch Area are living below the poverty level when
compared to the Citywide benchmark (both are +15 percentage points respectively)
• More residents of all Target Neighborhoods are spending 30% or more of their household income on rent than the
Citywide comparison
• St. Roch, highlighted in red, performed worse in each category amongst the Target Neighborhoods when compared

• There were 164 murders in 2015 (avg. 13.6 per month)
• Murders were up 9.3% (+14) over 2014
• The 7th District had the most murders (44)
• Little Woods, in the 7th District, had the most murders of any neighborhood (17)
• 30% (50) of 2015 murders were cleared within the calendar year
• There were 39 murder victims within the NOLA FOR LIFE target group (African-
American male age 16-24) (24%)
• There were 340 non-fatal shooting victims in 2015 (avg. 28.3 per month)
• Non-fatal shootings were down 13.5% (-53) under 2014
• The 5th District had the most non-fatal shootings (71)
• Central City, in the 6th District, had the most non-fatal shootings of any neighborhood
(46)
• 26% (89) of 2015 non-fatal shootings were cleared within the calendar year
• There were 116 non-fatal shooting victims within the NOLA FOR LIFE target group
(African-American male age 16-24) (34%) Target Neighborhoods Include: Behrman Area, Central City, Little Woods, and St. Roch Area.

● Majority of murder victims were African-American males (77%)
● The average age of a murder victim was 32 years old
● Murder victims were more likely to be killed in a public space (61%) and were more likely to
be drug related (26%)
● A handgun was the most commonly used weapon in a murder (75%)
● The majority of arrested murder suspects were African-American males (87%)
● The average age of an arrested murder suspect was 29 years old
Summary of Non-fatal Shootings
● Majority of non-fatal shooting victims were African-American males (77%)
● The average age of a non-fatal shooting victim was 29 years old
● Non-fatal shooting victims were more likely to be shot in a public space (64%) and were
equally likely to be drug related or the result of a retaliation or feud (26%)
● A handgun was the most commonly used firearm in a non-fatal shooting (78%)
● Arrested non-fatal shooting suspects were commonly African-American males (86%)
● The average age of an arrested non-fatal shooting suspect was 30 years old

Sundays, the number of non-
fatal shooting victims did not
differ much among the days
of the week
