Book ReviewsPlaying With FireBy Tess Gerritsen

Reviewed by Cheryl KravetzWhile browsing through an antique shop in Rome, violinist Julia Ansdell discovers an old and dusty

sheet of music called the Incendio Waltz. As she reads the haunting melody, sheknows she must have it. When she gets home and plays the music it seems to havea terrible effect on her small daughter - Julia trips on the stairs and the family pet isviolently killed. Confused at the response her daughter has to Incendio, Julia goes back to Italywhere she sets out to find the author of the music and discover just what it means. Her search leads her to Venice, where she discovers an ancient secret revolving

around a very powerful and very dangerous family. This haunting story is a departure from Gerritsen's popular Rizzoli and Iles novels and it is atestament to the author's wonderful skill for weaving a tale of mystery and intrigue. I enjoyed this bookvery much. Random House 28.00 St. Martin's Minotaur Books 2015 1st ed 1st printing. Signed byCox on the title page. $25.99.

The Man on the Washing Machine By Sue Cox

Reviewed by Joanne Sinchuk Winner of the Minotaur Books/Mystery Writers of America First Crime Novel Competition, Sue Cox

has written a charming, witty first mystery in a delightful series. Theophania Bogart(Theo for short) is hiding in San Francisco to escape a family scandal. She owns abath and body shop named Aromas, lives above the shop, and encounters thoseinteresting neighborhood characters only a place like San Francisco can produce. Theo is a level-headed protagonist with an English sense of humor, serving as ahub of a group of eccentric friends and neighbors. While sipping her morning tea oneday, she sees the local handyman fall to his death out of a neighbor's window. A few

days later, his ex-wife, and Theo's best friend, is found dead at the bottom of a compost pile. AndTheo comes home to find a strange man standing on her washing machine. As Theo sets off to find the killer, she finds love, her grandfather, and more about her neighborsthan she cares to know. All the while trying to keep her own salacious history in the deep, deeppast. I can't wait til the next book to find out exactly what her past involves.Minotaur 1st Printing, Signed: 25.99

Crimson Shore By Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child

Reviewed by Cheryl KravetzSpecial Agent A.X.L. Pendergast and his ward Constance Greene, are called to Exmouth,Massachusetts to investigate the theft of a priceless wine collection. A collection, by the way, thatPendergast recognizes.

  • While searching the wine cellar for any clues that may have been left behind by the thief,Pendergast finds remains of a human skeleton behind a brick wall. And to makethings even more exciting, he and Constance learn that during the 1692 Salemwitch trials the real witches fled to Exmouth, where they made their new home inthe surrounding salt marshes and continued to practice their craft. AsPendergast searches the marshes, he finds a murdered corpse floating in thewater, and the only clue is a group of unusual carvings.

Agent Pendergast is one of my favorite fictional characters. He is a true Southern gentlemanwho can match wits - and win - against even the most accomplished criminal. Crimson Shore is truePreston and Child, keeping the reader on edge until the electrifying end. Hachette 27.00
