BARANGAY BENSICAN
BRIEF SOCIO-ECONOMIC PROFILE
( CY-2014 )
BRIEF HISTORY
Long ago, this barangay was part of barangays in the mountainside San Isidro. Due to
increasing population and increase in the income of people as a resolution was passed that the
northern portion of San Isidro will be separated to become of another barangay. Through the
willfull prayers of the inhabitants and leaders their wish or proposal was blessed and Bensican was
announced to become a new barangay.
Bensican got its name of the community from a deep and winding creek which is the source
of irrigation and where the spring development is located at the mountainous place north and
eastern part of this barangay. This runs through the residential areas of Bensican down to the
sabangan river. Leaders that time was headed by Don Primitivo Laureta, a native of this barangay.
The inhabitants was pretty much engaged in planting tobacco, corn and vegetable, but the
prime source of income was farming.
Bensican was bounded on the north by barangay salpad, on the south by barangay san
isidro, on the west by barangay malilion and on the east by barangay dalumpinas.

CABULOAN
BARANGAY CABULOAN
BRIEF SOCIO-ECONOMIC PROFILE
( CY-2014 )
BRIEF HISTORY
Cabuloan was formerly a sitio of Barrio Sto. Tomas before the 60’s. The PACD creation of
barangays in the countrysides made local leaders respond to the call of the times that cabuloan
became a distinct and a separate barangay. It is one of the barangays which comprises the 5-C
barangays of the Sto. Tomas Centro. It is bounded on the south by the Sabangan River and Brgy.
San Rafael Centro, Sitio Casapangan; on the east by Brgy.Camangaan; on the north by
Brgy.Sto.Tomas and on the west by the Agno River.
According to old folks, Cabuloan got its name from the root word “bulo” which in Pangasinan
language refers to a species of bamboo. Thus, the word Cabuloan means the place where the
“bulo” is generally found. The bulo is a special kind of bamboo but unlike “kawayan”, it does not
grow everywhere. It is highly useful not only as a housing material but as a handicraft material like
in basket making sawali and bilao because of the thinness. Due to the abundance of bulo growing
at the place, the people named the place Cabuloan. Up to the present, bulo is still predominantly
growing in Cabuloan.
Endowed with a shallow water table, water simply ozze out as springs from the ground even
on hot summer months in cabuloan. This had made agriculture and fishpond raising very
productive to local folks. Similarly blessed by nature with rich and fertile soil, good irrigation and
hardworking people, farming had become the primary source of income of the inhabitants. Other
sources of income are fishing, fishpond raising, pottery making, livestock raising and bamboo craft.
Its main farm produce are palay, corn, and vegetables.
Some local leaders became prominent leader of the municipality like former councilors Don
Cecilio Doton and Don Florentino Lampa. The latter is the father of incumbent Councilor Filipina T.
Lampa, whom like his father is a native of Brgy. Cabuloan.Prominent families of Brgy. Cabuloan are
the Doton, Arquero, Lampa, Rodrigo and Seriosa among others.

BARANGAY CALANUTIAN
BRIEF SOCIO-ECONOMIC PROFILE
( CY-2014 )
BRIEF HISTORY
Calanutian is the only island barangay of San Nicolas situated west of the town some 8
kilometers away and isolated by Agno River that provide most of the water supplies needed to
irrigate the ricelands in Eastern pangasinan.
Just like most of the barangays in San Nicolas, Calanutian was inhabited by settlers from
Ilocos Sur and La Union. It was a part of Barrio Sto. Tomas that encompassed Cabuloan,
Camanggaan and Centro and Camindoroan. Prominent among the migrants were the Aquino,
Cabonitalla, Ortiguero and the Lucas clans.
The place was grown by thick forest, one of which was the “lanuti” which was found
everywhere and even in river banks. Agno river then was blessed with crystal clear water teeming
with delicious fish of many kinds. Picnickers frolicked on its white sands during summertime and
sought shelter under the shades of robust lanuti trees.
The lanuti rivers became popular that soon people from far and wide called the place
“calanutian” or a place where the lanuti trees were in great abundance.
A flash flood in the 70s caused by a strong typhoon swept away the big parcel of lands in
this barangay. Because of this, they decided to settle in a vast ricelands across the Agno River near
Sitio Pugo of Barangay. San Felipe West, They now called the place Villa Jose in honor of former
Barangay Captain Jose Paragas, who served the Barangay for more than a decade before he died.

BRIEF SOCIO-ECONOMIC PROFILE

BRIEF HISTORY
Barangay Camanggaan was formerly a sitio of Barangay Sto. Tomas before the 70s. Early
settlers in the place came from Dingras, Sarrat and Piddig, Ilocos Norte in the later part of the 19th
century. These adventurous Ilokanos were led by Bolinao, Evangelista, Paraguas, Luzano, Mariano
and other families who established their homes with farming as the primary source of their
livelihood.
The place was blessed with thick forest trees and other fruit-bearing trees like mangoes or
mangga in the local dialect. Every backyard has mango fruit bearing trees. People from adjacent
barangays called the place as “Camanggaan” because of the abundance of mango trees in the
locality.
The first members of the barangay council included the following: Cresencia Bibat, Brgy.
Captain Celedonio Balno, Bonifacio Vicente, Isabelo Pascua, Armenio Pascua, Tomas Valdez and
Avelino Ubatto, councilmen.
Other source of income are livestock raising, gold panning, and overseas employment. A
tourist spot is the San Sebastian Dam in the Sabangan River, which attracts picnickers.

BRIEF SOCIO-ECONOMIC PROFILE
( CY-2014 )
BRIEF HISTORY
Camindoroan is a barangay west of poblacion sprawled along the Agno River in the western
side. Most of the people, are hardworking farmers, pottery makers and regular employees of both
public and private enterprises.
The name of the barangay was taken from the name of Lakay or Ka Mindoro, a brave and
hardworking peasant from Dingras, Ilocos Norte, who, with a handful of relatives, friends and
neighbors, migrated to the westernside of San Nicolas. His primordial purpose in coming to San
Nicolas was to evade the Spanish authorities who got mad of his apathy and defiance to subject
himself to the Spanish authorities in the Ilocos during the first decade of 19th century.
Ka Mindoro and his men found refuge in the swampy portion of the barangay. People later
called the place Camindoroan in his honor.

BRIEF SOCIO-ECONOMIC PROFILE
( CY-2014 )
BRIEF HISTORY
Fianza is the second remotest and mountainous barangay of the municipality situated in the
ranges of the Caraballo Mountains. It is bounded on the north by itogon, Benguet; on the south by
Brgy. Sta. Maria East; on the east by Kayapa, Nueva Vizcaya; and Brgy.Malico; and on the west by
Brgys.Salingcob and Dalumpinas. It is in Brgy. Fianza that the Ambayoan River gains its first entry
to the municipality as the river originated in the Mountain Province near the source of Ambuklao
River.
Fianza was formerly a sitio of Barrio San Antonio before the 60’s. Due to the PACD creation
of barangays to foster development in the countryside, it transformed the said barrio into two
separate and distinct barangays. At present, nine sitio comprises the barangay, namely: Sitio
Puyao, Baracbac, Pastoran, Sapinit, Andalasi, Bangar, Mayandot, Padaraw and kulangew. Sitios
Pastoran and Sapinit are considered the center of the barangay, being the most populous areas
and most productive in terms of farm productions. Sitio Sapinit is about 9 kms. Away from the
town proper.
Fianza got is name from the richest and most influential person who had settled in the
barangay. After retiring as the first mayor of Itogon, Benguet, he owned vast tracts of lands, a
cattle ranch and was said that his guests were served to eat on golden plates with golden spoons
and forks. Because of his richness, generosity and power, people simply referred the place as
Fianza. Henceforth, the locality became barangay Fianza in honor of Mayor Mariano Fianza.
Fianza’s first settlers originated mostly from nearby Itogon and Kayapa, Nueva Vizcaya.
Aside from the few who came from Dalumpinas and San Antonio of San Nicolas. The first Teniente
del Barrio was Emilio Marticio. Most of the inhabitants belong to the ethno linguistic groups of
Ibaloi, Iwak and Kalanguya tribes who all speak ilokano as their second dialect. Because of its
topography, farm products are mostly upland crops like camote, gabi and ginger aside from palay
and corn cultivated in small flat lands beside the Ambayoan river in Sitio Pastoran and Sapinit.
Fishing is their secondary source of income along with tree planting, firewood production and cattle
grazing.
Fianza is accessible ony by land transportation of the high, four-wheel drive types during
dry season as the roadline being used from sitio Puyao to Sitio Sapinit is the winding Ambayoan
River itself. On the rainy days, people has to travel on foot via treacherous mountain trails from
Puyao to Sapinit which is about 5 kms. In distance.

BARANGAY
LUNGAO
BARANGAY LUNGAO
BRIEF SOCIO-ECONOMIC PROFILE
( CY-2014 )
BRIEF HISTORY
Lungao was formerly a sitio of barrio San Antonio along with Salingcob and Dalumpinas.
Due to the increase in population and the PACD creation of barangays in the 60’s, it was converted
as a separate barangay. Lungao is bounded on the north by Brgy. Dalumpinas, on the south by
Ambayaoan River.Salingcob; and on the west by Brgy.Camanggaan. It has an approximate land
area of 900 hectares.
It remained a mystery on how the barnagay acquired the name Lungao. No historical data
could be found. Even the elders in the barangay has no story to tell on how it derived its name.
Before the 70’s, Lungao was already a progressive and a thickly populated community. It
shared the same San Antonio Elementary School with Salingcob. The San Antonio Barangay High
School in the same campus was the first public school established in the municipality and founded
by the late Mr. Edilberto Tamondong. Lungao became a virtual model farm, demo farm and
experimental farm rolled in to one due to the pioneering agricultural ventures of Mr. Edilberto
Tamondong, Don Gaudencio Marciano and Mr. Andres Lopez. They made Lungao a top vegetable
producer and made San Nicolas rose from rural obscurity to regional prominence by being dubbed
as the “Vegetable Basket of Eastern Pangasinan.”
In 1976, super typhoon “Didang” devastated San Nicolas by giving the biggest flood ever
recorded in the history of our town. The Ambayaoan River overflowed and totally washed out the
residential area of San Antonio. The entire school campus was totally washed away so were the
dwellings of Lungao and Salingcob and the people were forced to evacuate. The community was in
total disarray. Some residents fled to higher grounds for safety in Brgy. Salingcob “Little Baguio”.
Others who could not simply leave their farms had stayed behind in the place now called
“Nagpanawan”- Presently a sitio of Salingcob. White most of Lungao residents simply settled
inward away from the Ambayaoan River, Brgy. Capt. Pedro Sulio was instrumental in the
construction of a new roadline from the Provincial road going to the barnagay as all of the
barangay roads were washed out by the flood. This road is now usually called Lungao Road which
interconnects the barangay to the town proper and a major route to Barangay Salingcob and
Dalumpinas.
Lungao has now recovered from the 1976 flood and greatly improved and progressed as a
barangay. Yet, it is now only a few meters away from the unprotected riverbank that every rainy
season brings back the memories of the great 1976 flood to the people.
With steady supply of water from Ambayaoan, and blessed with rich fertile and sturdy
industrious people, Lungao is still a booming agricultural community. Farming is the primary source
of income with palay, corn and vegetable as the main farm produce. Livestock raising and overseas
employment as secondary source of income.

BRIEF SOCIO-ECONOMIC PROFILE

BRIEF HISTORY
Camindoroan is a barangay west of poblacion sprawled along the Agno River in the western
side. Most of the people, are hardworking farmers, pottery makers and regular employees of both
public and private enterprises.

BARANGAY SALINGCOB
BRIEF SOCIO-ECONOMIC PROFILE
( CY-2014 )
BRIEF HISTORY
Historical data show that a certain barrio of the town called San Antonio composed of three
sitios namely Simmalingcob, Lungao and Dalumpinas. Due to the increase in population, these
three sitios were converted in three separate barangays. Each barnagay was then under a leader
called Barrio Lieutenant. At that time, the late Hon. Diosdado Macapagal was the president of the
Republic of the Philippines, Hon. Conrado Estrella was the governor of Pangasinan and the late
Hon. Pacifico Ylarde was the municipal mayor. Thus the birth of Barangay Salingcob.
Years Passed and Barnagay Salingcob slowly became a progressive barangay. Feeder roads,
and farm-to-market roads were constructed to facilitate the transport of their products to the
market.
But in the year 1976, as super typhoon named “Didang” devastated Northern and Central
Luzon, San Nicolas suffered from considered as biggest floods ever recorded in the history of this
town. The Ambayaoan River overflowed its banks and almost totally washed out the whole
barangay of Salingcob, the dwellings, the community elementary school and barangay high school.
The populace was then forced to evacuated and settle to higher place called Simmalingcob, now
Salingcob.
At present, Barnagay Salingcob is situated at the foot of the Caraballo Mountains, about
seven kilometer away from the town proper it is also known as “little Baguio” of San Nicolas
because of the houses were built at the foot and slope of small hills and with winding roads going
up and town. The barangay has an area of 200 hectares more or less, with a population of 750.
Most of the people are engaged in farming and planting and has enough water supply throughout
the year for its and second copings of palay thus making the populace self-employed and self-
sufficient.
Barangay Salingcob is present under the administration of barangay Captain Maciste R.
Ortiguero and other barangay officials namely: Marcos F. Batin, Jr., Cesario C. Marquez,
Herminigildo J. Batin, Pelagio S. Rubator, jr., Victor O. Cacayan, Rudy V. Yranon, Zaldy B. Fabro as

BARANGAY
SALPAD
BARANGAY SALPAD
BRIEF SOCIO-ECONOMIC PROFILE
( CY-2014 )
BRIEF HISTORY
According to old folks, Salpad was originally a sitio of Barrio San Felipe and settled mostly
by adventurous migrants from the Ilocos provinces. The name Salpad was derived from the names
of six prominent families who first settled in the place. They are the Serios, Agne, Lampa, Padilla,
Alagano and Descargar. Hence, they coined together the first letters of their family names as
SALPAD and later named their community after this.
In the early 60’s during the term of Don Pacifico M. Ylarde as the municipal mayor; Salpad
became a separate and distinct barangay by virtue of PACD action to foster countryside
development. This was thru the help and initiative of Don Primitive of nearby Brgy. Bensican and
the District Councilor Primitivo Laureta, of at the time, who saw that Salpad had met the required
criteria to become a barangay. The first tiniente del barrio was Dionisio Mesias and followd later by
Gervasio Javar.
Brgy. Salpad is situated at the foothills of the Mambolo Mountains in the Caraballo
Mountains in the Caraballo mountain ranges some 7 kms. Northwest of the town proper. It is
bounded on the west by Brgy. Bensican. Is is flourishing community endowed with rich fertile
farmlands, grassy pasture lands and thick forests. Sabangan River traverses the barangay and
provides adequate supply of water for agriculture. There are five farmer’s irrigation systems
established along the river namely: Tanggal Vintar, Tanggal Pias, Tanggal Lisud, Tanggal Mayor
and Tanggal Segunda. The upland farms of Salpad are likewise irrigated by water coming from
Mambolo Creek. The nearby Mambolo mountains has a thick virgin forest with plenty of wild
animals like deers, monkeys, wild pig, wild chicken and eagles with such diversified fauna and
flora. It is the plan of the local chief executive to convert Mambolo mountains as an animal
sanctuary aimed for eco-tourism, the first in the province, if ever.
For potable drinking water, the Mambolo mountain ios the main source of the barangay
through the piped spring development system. Yet, There is also another spring on the northeast
outskirt of the barangay which is noted for its “miraculous” and medicinal value.
At present, the prominent families in the barangay are the Lampa, Agne, Mesias, Ruiz and
Serios.

BARANGAY SAN FELIPE EAST
BRIEF SOCIO-ECONOMIC PROFILE
( CY-2014 )
BRIEF HISTORY
San Felipe was one time a big and remotest Barrio of San Nicolas located about 12 kms.
away from the town proper. It is situated in an area where the Agno River meets the foothills of
the Caraballo Mountains and the plains of the town. It was a big community inhabited by settlers
coming mostly from the Ilococs provinces, La Union and Benguet who were lured by the gold rush
on the Agno River. Most migrant settlers were devout Catholics that they decided to name the
place after their patron saint San Felipe.
San Felipe was divided into two separate barangays in the 60’s brought about by the PACD
creation of barangays to intensify the development of the countrysides. The eastern part adjacent
to the mountain was named San Felipe East, while the western portion near to the Agno River was
namend San Felipe West. The elementary school of San Felipe serves as the demarcation line
between the east and the west.
Presently, San Felipe East is composed of various sitios, namely: Sitios Centro, Bacolodan,
Caniogan, Casilagan, Rodriguez, Escara, Lagpan, Calanutan, Bulangit, and Cabayawasan,
Cabayawasan is a mountain sitio which could only be reached by an hours’hike on winding
mountain tarils from sitio Lagpan. And its inhabitants mostly belong to the Ibaloi tribe. The
barangay is bounded on the north by the Agno River; on the south by Brgy. Camindoroan, on the
west by Brgy.San Felipe West; and on the East by Brgy.Salpad, with an approximate land area of
1,200 hectares. Agriculture is the primary source livelihood with palay, corn and vegetables as its
main products. Other sources of income is god panning. Livestock raising, reforestation and
employment as construction workers in the San Roque Dam project.
The barangay folks had actively shown there unity and cooperation through the organization
and creation of a non-government organization name Safewater, Inc., aimed at protecting the
environment through massive seedling producyion, ecological projects and reforestation activities.
The organization has about 600 registered members, earning a considerable amount from the their
activities.
San Felipe East is destined to bring back its lost glory as the foremost tourist spot in Eastern
Pangasinan in the near future. Agpay resort which was a famous tourist destination in the early
70’s is being developed with the construcyion oh three large swimming pools in the deep forest.
Construction of cottages and other amenities is to follow as planned by the local Chief Executive.
Also, once the San Roque Dam Project will be completed, this will become the main tourist
attraction for the whole province.
The barangay is one of the communities being benefited by the San Roque Multi-purpose
Project. Financial assistance from the National Power Corporation as host was Extended that led to
the omprovement of barangay roads, rural electrification, construction of barangay hall, acquisition
of two barangay vehicles and other basic needs of the barangay. As sitio Bulangit will be totally
submerged and become the main reservoir of the project, financial assistance were also extended
to the families to be displaced. A resettlement site will be constructed for them in sitio Lagpan
which will boast the amenities of a modern-day housing subdivision. Employment opportunities in
the dam’s construction were prioritized for San Felipe East residents to further improve their living
conditions. Really, the people had struck the pot of gold in the Agno River from the realization of
the mega project called San Roque Dam.
Prominent families in the barangay are the Serquiña, Abaga, Rodriguez, Bilog, Tambo
among other. Some local leaders became prominent leaders of the town as municipal councilors
like Don Alberto Serquiña and Don Dominador Rodrigo, Sr.

BRIEF SOCIO-ECONOMIC PROFILE
( CY-2014 )
BRIEF HISTORY
San Isidro was a premier barangay or barrio before the outbreak of the Second World War
encompassing Malilion, Bensican and Salpad with a total land area of 543 hectares.
However, with the creation of PACD in the 60’s, other barangays were organized to
accelerate the impending development in the counrtryside. Reduced to merely 85-90 hectares in
area, San Isidro has only 3 sitios now, Nagcoralan, Sta. Crusan and San Juan with a population of
728 based in the latest census.
Ast its name signifies, this barangay is named after San Isidro, the patron saint of farmers
and agriculture. Up to this time the belief in the powers of intercessory prayers of their patron saint
working wonders of the welfare of the people is very much alive.
The development of the barangay takes us back to the pioneers from Ilocos in 1920 who
came to settle in this barangay like the Laureta, Serquiña, Martinez and Lucas clans.

BRIEF SOCIO-ECONOMIC PROFILE
( CY-2014 )
BRIEF HISTORY
Barrio San Rafael is a flourishing place of the municipality. It is three (3) kilometers west of
the town proper and it is situated along the northern side of the Ambayaoan River. The Barrio was
composed of many sitios, namely: Sitio Calupaan, Sitio Centro, Sitio Casapangan; Sition Parbo,
Sitio Marintec and Sitio Malasin. San Rafael was only one barrio before with its name derived from
the patron saint, “San Rafael.” The adventurous people of the Ilocos province were the original
settlers who arrived to seek greener pastures and better opportunities.
With the creation of the PACD in the 60’s to foster countryside development, Barrio of San
Rafael was divided into three separate barangays. Sitio Calupaan became San Rafael West, Sitio
Parbo, Marintec and Malasin became San Rafael East and Sitio Centro and Casapangan became San
Rafael Centro. These Three barangays is now known as San Rafael District with San Rafael Centro
as the center of the district. It is where the elementary school and the high school of the three
barangays are found. The original lot of the high school was donated by the late Don Macario
Paraguas, who was from Sitio Calupaan, While the elementary school lot was donated by Don
Guillermo Bedaña of San Rafael Centro.
Barangay San Rafael Centro is still composed of Sitio Centro and Casapangan. It is bounded
on the east by San Rafael East; on the west by San Rafael West; on the north by the Sabangan
River; and on the south by the Ambayaoan River. It is basically a flourishing agricultural
community with farm produce ranges from palay, corn and cassava to variety of fruits and
vegetable like sineguelas, calamansi and mongo. The Rural Electrification Program of the
government thru PANELCO III had brought progress in the community and the standard of living
increased. Other sources of income like welding shops and piggeries had proliferated.
The barangay is predominantly of Roman Catholic although other sects existed. Also
considered by the inhabitants as part of their barangay history was the birth of the first birth
known living triplets in the history of San Nicolas. Their parents Mr. ELpidio M. Soria and Mrs.
Demetria named their triplet sons, Sherwin, Erwin and Darwin. The triplet are now Twenty-three
(23) years old and all professionals.
Prominent families of San Rafael Centro are the Rodillas, Dotimas, Bibat, Dela Cruz, and
Doton among others. Prominent barangay leaders of the municipality as municipal councilors
includes Don Policarpio H. Bibat, Don Silvestre Dotimas, Don Claudio Dotimas and Don Roberto
Rodillas. Incumbent councilor Genaro “Boyet” R. Paraguas, jr. is also a native of this place and
presently the district councilor of the San Rafael District.

SAN RAFAEL WEST
BARANGAY SAN SAN RAFAEL WEST
BRIEF SOCIO-ECONOMIC PROFILE
( CY-2014 )
BRIEF HISTORY
Historycal data show that San Rafael is only one barrio befor with its name derived its
patron saint San Rafael. San Rafael West, more popularly known from its old name Calupaan, is
the former Sitio Calupaan of Barrio San Rafael and is located in the westernmost portion of the
barrio and is bounded on the west by the Sabangan River, on the east by Barangay San Rafael
Centro, on the north by Barangay. Cabuloan and on the south by the Ambayaoan River.
Calaupaan derived its name from the local plant lupa, which is a local poison tree seceting a
very irritating oil from its leaves, much more irritating and itchy than that from leaves of the wild
gabi plant. Lupa grows abundantly at the place at the time hence the word Calupaan or place of
the lupa was called. Through the years of hardwork, unity, cooperation and bayanihan spirit of the
local folks, they managed slowly to exterminate the irrigating plant to extinction.
With the creation of the PACD in the 60’s, Calupaan was renamed San Rafael West and
reorganized like the other barangays of the municipality to pave of way for the impending
development in the countryside. The first settlers of the barangay are the Cayaban, Dela Cruz,
Valencia, Tomines and Trinidad and most of them track back their roots to the Ilocos Province.
The place endowed with rich fetile soil suitable for agricultural and irrigated by Tanggals
kadir, Ustomg, Lakay Pedro and PCC out from the water of the Sabangan River in the western
teeming with various kinds of fishes like dalag, hito, ayungin, tilapia and bunog as well as the
native freshwater shrimps which is often made into local delicacy called “jumping salad”. The
abundant rivers springs in Sabangan also provided a sparklingly clear and cool water ideal for
swimming that the place is full with picnickers during the hot summer giving some local folks and
idea to put up cottages for fun and profit like the Aquino Resort and the Sirena’s Place.
The local inhabitants of Brgy. San Rafael West are all God-fearing and religious people
mostly of the Roman Catholic with only a few from other religious sects. Yet, in this little diversity
all of them are all standing united and working hand-in-hand towards a more progressive San
Rafael West, Thus, the present day Calupaan is not far behind in terms of unity, peace and
progress.

BRIEF SOCIO-ECONOMIC PROFILE
( CY-2014 )
BRIEF HISTORY
Sto. Tomas was one time a big barrio of San Nicolas composed of five sitios, namely:
Cabuloan, Camangaan, Camindoroan, Calanutian and Centro. Sto Tomas was inhabited by settlers
from the Ilocos province and La Union. Prominent among the migrant and adventurous Ilocanos
were the Mariano, Rodrigo, Agpasa, Sermonia, Hermano, Aquino and others, who established their
homes beside the Agno River with farming and fishing as their primary source of livelihood. It was
busting community along the river and was named by the faithful and religious inhabitants as
Barrio Sto. Tomas, in honor of Sto.Tomas who became their patron saint.
In the 60’s, the PACD creation of barangays to intensify countryside development divided
the big barrio into five separate barangays with sitio Centro becoming Sto. Tomas Centro. Sto.
Tomas Centro is bounded on the north by Brgy. Camindoroan; on the south by Brgy.Camangaan,
and Cabuloan; on the east by Brgy.Malilion; and on the west by the Agno River.
Sto. Tomas Centro is the most populous barnagay among the five barangays which
composed the Sto. Tomas District and often called as the 5 C barangays. As the name implied, Sto.
Tomas Centro is the center of the whole district in which the elementary and high schools are
located. Presently it is composed of three sitio, namely: Sitio Aquino, Sitio Laud and Sitio Parking.
Farming is the primary source of living of the people with palay, corn, tobacco and vegetables as
their main crops. Other sources of income are pottery making, fishing, bamboo craft and livestock
raising.
Presently, Sto. Tomas High School, under the tutelage of Principal Dionisio E. Olipas, is
reaping success and recognition in athletics particularly in the Archery event. Their Archery Teams,
both in men and women division, are Ilocos Regional Athletic Meet Champions (Gold Medalist) of
the past two years and currently participating again the IRAA meet this year. Two of its archers,
namely: Randy Collado and Mary Ann Castro were likewise finalist in their respective events in the
1997 and 1998 Palarong Pambansa.
