AROUND THE STABLE

Our 2-Year Olds

This coming weekend marks the start of the 2-year old racing season and things are ramping up at the

stables in preparation for Saturday.

Some of our babies had their first official barrier trial in September with six jumping out on the 18th and

another two hitting the track on the 25th

On the 18th Chris sent around Stampe, Wowsers, Shanahan, Centrefire, The Carpenter and Galvarino over

840m. Click on the link to hear Chris’s comments: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=890hdm5iV5w

Chris hopes to have to have three runners across the two divisions of the juvenile races at Doomben on

Saturday with The Carpenter entered in the colts and geldings race and Centrefire and Buckets Of Pride in

the fillies.

“You never know with two-year olds as they can be there one day and the next day they need to go to the

paddock for a rest. But at this stage I hope to have all three of them running,” he said. “They have gone OK

in trials and are ready to go to the races.’

The Carpenter was second in his Doomben trial on the 18th of September while Buckets Of Pride won a two-year old trial a week later. Centrefire was well beaten in her trial but has shown ability on the training track.

Older Horses

After his hard-fought win in the Grafton Cup followed by a 10-day

letup, First Crush came back into the stables fresh and well to prepare

for his next tilt, the Group 3 Newcastle Cup. Bruno was sent to Sydney

for a lead up race in the Premier’s Cup at Rosehill over 1900m on the

25th of August and then it was onto the Newcastle Cup on the 14th of

September. Although he finished sixth it was only by 3.8lengths.

Chris was more than happy with his performance. ‘I am very proud of

the way Bruno went. Mark rode him great. There was good speed in

the race which allowed him to find the right spot and then relax and get into his groove. If he had not received the little

bit of interference in the straight, which caused him to lose his momentum, I feel that he would have ended up in a

more prominent position at the end.’

Horses don’t come much tougher than First Crush who has raced during every month since November last year. He

enjoys the stable life and enjoys getting pampered and being looked after every day. After the Newcastle Cup he went

out to Oakwood Farm for a well-deserved spell.

Apart from Keep Your Roses saluting the judge Chris also had two

other winners on the weekend of the 18/19th of August.

Tevye was having his fifth start with the stable and after some solid

runs, including running second twice by less than half a length, the

5-year old gelding was due for a win. A great front running ride by

Beau Appo gave the horse every chance and after being challenged

by Toecanargie Man coming into the straight he soon put them

away and went on to win by a head.

Monaco Playboy (pictured left) gave his trainer a winning treble for

the weekend after taking out the third race of the day at the Sunny Coast on Sunday. Ridden patiently by apprentice

Clayton Gallagher, Playboy peeled out three-wide approaching the turn and ran down Chase the Wind to score his fifth

career victory. He then backed up 10days later to go back to back with a win at Ipswich.

After four consecutive third placings the ever consistent Keep Your

Roses broke through on the 18th of August, at Ipswich, for her second

win of her career. Ridden by Nathan Day he had her just back behind

the leaders and after straightening up the pair took a path along the

rail to take the win by 2 lengths.

The daughter of Love Conquers All is currently out having a break.

After making the move from Bjorn Baker’s stable in Sydney to sunny

Queensland Smartypy (Smart Missile) showed her talent by winning

her first start with Munce Racing and breaking her maiden at the

same time. Sitting towards the rear of the pack, senior jockey Jeff

Lloyd gave the mare a cool ride before working his way between

runners looking for the gap and when it appeared he gave Smarty her

head and punched through to take the win by one and three quarters

of a length.

She then went from a 900m maiden to a 1200m race at Ipswich on the

5th of September. With Jeff Lloyd on board again Smarty took the

race by the scruff of the neck when they hit the 100m mark scoring an impressive 2 and a quarter length win.

Well there will be no nudie run for trainer Chris Munce after

Starkers broke his maiden at his third start after winning the third

race on the card at Ipswich on the 14th of September.

With Jeff Lloyd pushing the 3-year old son of Love Conquers All,

Starkers showed early speed to race up and sit just outside the

leader Pinch Legend and when they turned for home Jeff gave

him the go and the colt raced away for a convincing one and a

quarter length win. The well named colt is out of the Reset mare

Nude Model.

Another new comer to the stables was Sky Lake. Formally

trained by Mick Price in Melbourne the Daughter of All Too Hard

made a winning debut for the stable when she won the Fillies &

Mares Class 2 at the Gold Coast on the 15th of September. Racing

most of the way mid-field, jockey Nathan Day pulled the mare

out from behind the pack after turning into the straight and from

there, under his urgings, she ran down the outside to overtake

the frontrunners and win by a solid one and a quarter length.

Strong Performers

The following horses all showed strong performances during the past month and a half.

Zoucara made her debut for the stable on the 9th of September at the Sunny Coast. Chris said she showed an

enormous amount of speed out of the gate to lead and she certainly ran along at a very fast tempo. Her run was full of

merit and to fight back after being headed by the horses that ran third showed how brave and tough she is.

After his first up run was not up to his usually standard, Martinelli came back with an impressive third placing at the

Gold Coast on the 22nd of September. Having to carry 59kg he was given a nice front running ride by jockey Nathan

Day and Chris could not have been more pleased with the result missing out on first spot by less than half a length.

The big grey Urban Ruler moved into the stables at the end of August after racing down south with Darren Weir.

Already amid his current campaign he has had two starts with the stable and both times has placed third.

Global Choice continues to knock on the door for her first win with her last start producing an impressive second

placing behind a good horse in Al’s Kingdom.

Dawn Approach x Savings (chestnut colt)

Chris said, “He is a lovely big, strong, athletic colt with a very athletic

walk on him with a good head on his shoulder. His x-rays were all

clean and I felt he was easily the best colt at the sale”.

By Dawn Approach (New Approach) the colt is out of the Iglesia mare

Savings.

After having a nice break, the colt is now back in the stable going

through his work for what is his second preparation. He has now been

in work for approx. 6weeks and is coming along really well. He has

settled down a bit now with a bit of work in him and is putting on good

condition. Chris has stated he is pleasing him in his work and in the coming weeks his workload will be stepped up to

see how far he can progress this time in.

The colt is BOBS Prizemoney eligible and eligible for the 2019 Capricornia Yearling Sale 2YO Classic race.

Shanahan (Time for War x Emerald Downs colt)

Chris said, "he is a lovely colt with a muscular

physique that grabbed my attention as soon as I saw him".

He also said the colt reminds him a lot of his sire. By Time

for War (Snitzel) 0ut of the Churchill Downs mare Emerald

Downs.

The colt had been in work now for approx. 10weeks and

on the 18th of September had his first barrier trial. Chris

said after the trial that he went pretty well and although

he raced greenly Mark Du Plessis, who rode him, said he

felt like he did a very good job. It was a very fast run heat and the colt knew he had had a decent gallop. He had a very

good preparation this time, he learnt a lot and will only improve. He how now gone out for a nice spell.

This video was taken last time he was in: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-PTZRFSRIVQ&feature=youtu.be

Shanahan is paid up for the Inglis Race Series and is BOBS eligible.

Smart Missile x Tempting Lady (bay colt)

He is a cracking colt and his x-rays were clean and he scoped clean as well. By Smart Missile (Fastnet Rock) he is out of the Northern

Meteor mare Tempting Lady.

Chris has said he is a really nice colt - a big leggy boy that

will fill out and be a strong 3-year-old. He is another one

that has copped his workload terrifically. He too has been

through the barriers and done some short run-a-longs and handled it all really well. The Smart Missile’s are going

terrific and he is getting plenty of winners.

This video was filmed at the beginning of September: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iJlrBTKC5y8

He is paid up for the Inglis Race Series and is BOBS eligible.

Kuroshio x Superb Melody (brown colt)

Chris said, “he is a magnificent, beautiful colt with a terrific walk

and very athletic. I believe he was one of the best colts at the

sale.”

By Kuroshio (Exceed and Excel) out of the city winning mare Superb Melody (Unbridled’s Song) The colt spent about 5 weeks in the stables last preparation and

Chris said he enjoyed his work while he was in. He went through

the barriers a couple of times and handled it well. He also had a

few short gallops that really impressed Chris. The colt started to

go through a bit of a growth spurt, so he is currently having a

good break, so he can grow and mature even more. We look forward to when he comes back into the stable as he is

one of the most striking colts I have seen in a long time. A real eye catcher!

This video was taken whilst he was in the stable last preparation: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CGSmQQtxR7s

The colt is paid up for the Queensland Thoroughbred Incentive Scheme (QTIS) and is eligible for the Magic Millions Race Series.

EMPLOYEE RECOGNITION PROGRAMME

At the end of August Shane Champion was recognised as the inaugural recipient of the Barn Buddy Award due to his

continual hard work and leading by example. In September it was Junior, one of Munce Racing’s longest serving

employees, that took out the monthly award. Both men were well deserving of the award and we appreciate the time,

care and attention to their work around the stables and with the horses that they provide.

BARN YARD MUNCELY

Hello all and welcome to another edition of Barnyard chat.

I would like to congratulate the whole TEAM at Barn 17 and 18 for an outstanding effort over the last month. As many

owners are probably not aware the staff put in an enormous amount of effort every day to care for our precious babies.

All horses are treated with the same utmost and devoted care regardless of their standing. I visit the Barn at least twice

a week and see so much love and attention to our horses and to also see the huge effort put in by Chris and Cathy to

educate and train their staff to a faultless level of equine attention to detail.

Something I learnt from a young age was there is no ‘i’ in team and team stands for:

Together

Everybody

Achieves

Miracles

So, to our beloved staff you are and always will be appreciated.

I am trying to get some answers on the Consumption Tax and what is happening with the Eagle Farm track and

possible racing dates. I should have answers by next month.

Don’t forget Everest Day on October 14th as the stable will have runners I am sure so come and show your support.

Cheers Barry and my lucky horseshoes be with us all.

VALE KELSO WOOD

Racing Queensland has paid tribute to Group 1 winning trainer Kelso Wood who died on Tuesday after a long battle with illness. Wood grew up in Brisbane and his first foray into racing was as an apprentice jockey in Brisbane during the 1960s. He started his apprenticeship at age 14 with trainer Athol Strong. After six years he moved to Sydney and completed his apprenticeship with trainer Harry Plant. Later he would work as Plant’s foreman in Sydney before taking out a license of his own. He then took up training in Sydney where his best horse, High Classic, won two Ramornie Handicaps at Grafton. Woods returned to Brisbane in the 1980s to ply his trade. Wood prepared several outstanding horses throughout his near 60 years in racing, including but not limited to, 1993 Doomben 10,000 winner Unequalled, the 2012 TJ Smith (now JJ Atkins) with Sizzling and the 2013 Magic Millions 2YO Classic with Real Surreal.

In the twilight of his career, Wood started a training partnership with long-time employee Patricia Gesler and the pair

enjoyed feature success when Snitzkraft won the Listed Falvelon Quality at Doomben last December. Wood officially retired from training in May with his last runner Delago Edition winning at Ipswich.

Chris was closely linked to the stable after returning to finish his riding career in Queensland and was among the first

to pay tribute, describing Wood as one of the best trainers he had the privilege to ride for. ‘I rode countless winners for

Kelso and he was one of the most meticulous trainers I have known. His horses were always a credit to him.’ he said. ‘I

went to see him in hospital on the Friday, along with David Devine and some of his other former owners. We spoke

about all the good times. Kelso will always be remembered as not only a gentleman but an astute horseman.’

WOOD’S LEGACY TO CONTINUE WITH MUNCE STABLE

The legacy of Brisbane trainer Kelso Wood will live on through

the Munce Racing stable, with Chris taking over the reins of

several of his former horses.

Chris partnered the Wood-trained Sizzling to victory in multiple stakes races including the Group 1 T.J Smith and the Group 2 QLD Guineas, Sires Produce and Champagne Classic. Fittingly, the famous cerise colours of owners David Devine and Nev Morgan have found a new home in the stables, including a lightly raced son of Sizzling named Torriente (pictured) and Trevello, a 4-year old son of Snitzel.

Former talented Queensland juvenile Nikitas, who was second in the 2016 Magic Millions 2YO Classic, has also returned to Queensland under the Munce Racing banner after stints with Chris Waller and Darren Weir since leaving the care of Wood. “We are privileged to be able to train some of his former horses and are thankful to owners David Devine and Nev Morgan for the opportunity.” Chris stated.

INDUSTRY NEWS

Breeders Welcome Increase To QTIS Bonuses

Thoroughbred Breeders Queensland president Basil Nolan has welcomed a move by Racing Queensland to increase mid-week Queensland Thoroughbred Incentive Scheme (QTIS) bonuses from November 1. The bonuses for mid-week non-maiden metropolitan QTIS races will increase from $10,000 to $12,000 to offer total prize money and bonuses of:

• $43,000 (for QTIS registered Fillies)

• $37,000 (for QTIS registered Colts and Geldings)

• $25,000 (for Non-QTIS horses) The same bonus increase will apply to maiden metropolitan QTIS races to offer total prize money and bonuses of:

• $38,000 (for QTIS registered Fillies)

• $32,000 (for QTIS registered Colts and Geldings)

• $20,000 (for Non-QTIS horses) Mr Nolan said he was ‘very happy’ to see the winning bonuses now align with those offered at provincial meetings. “QTIS has been a shining light for Queensland racing and its growth is crucial to the ongoing viability of both the breeding and racing industries in our state,” he said. Racing Queensland Thoroughbred Strategy and Development Manager Ross Gove said the increase was another step in the right direction. “This increase, whilst modest, is an extension of Racing Queensland’s commitment to the Queensland breeding and racing industries,” he said.

Perplexity

‘P’ was an ex-Waller horse that came to Munce Racing in January

2015 before retiring in November 2016. At retirement he was

given to one of his owner’s to be his forever home.

We recently received an email from Jo, wife of owner Christian,

to let us know how ‘P’ is going.

Hi everyone

We thought we’d drop a line to the Munce stable and let you know what Perplexity has been up to

since retiring from racing.

So, after a long and well-deserved spell and rehabilitation his leg injury healed really well and hasn’t

worried him since. He enjoys his new paddock mates Marco, a 22yrold thoroughbred, and his part-

time girlfriend Garland – the Norwegian Fjord. I say part-time as he’s happy to be friends with the

other mares on the property when he sees them!

So, his dressage training has been improving steadily and he regularly enjoys a trail ride. He still

manages to pull out a decent speed when I do hill work thrilling my agistees with his turn of speed.

He has regularly impress my dressage and riding coaches with his beautiful movement and how

quickly he “gets it” when we’re training, showing that wonderful work ethic he had when racing. We

have reached a stage to be ready to go out and compete and have regularly attended dressage

clinics and completion days with Lockyer Equestrian Group at Gatton.
