NME celebrates the MONKEES' first

DAVY JONES"CUMMUN have a cup of tea," was the greeting I received from Davy as I walked on to

Stage 7 at Columbia Studios, headquarters of the Monkees' television show. Heextended his hand, and began to lead me to the further end of the stage, where the Monkeesare housed in individual trailers.

Entering the doorway, Islowly manoeuvred myself side-ways past the huge double sleep-ing hunker towards a small bluewicker chair nestled in thecorner between the edge of thedressing table and the wall. Igently squeezed into a comfort-able position, and Davy handedme a while paper cup brimfull of piping hot tea.

He sat down at the dressing -table and made a quick inspec-tion of his image in the mirror.

" How are you then ? " he in-quired, as he began fishing forsomething in the drawer.

Settled backHe asked me to excuse him

while he quickly ran a combthrough his pudding -basin -cuthair. Finishing off the operationby inserting a parting in thecentre, he gave a satisfied nod,and settled back once again inthe chair.

He now looked like a mis-chievous schoolboy who had justplanted a home-made bomb inthe headmaster's study.

TAKING A SIP OF TEA,HE APOLOGETICALLY SAIDHE JUST HAD TO MAKEONE TELEPHONE CALL TOHIS DAD. THE CALL WASPLACED. FOR THE NEXT 15MINUTES OR SO DAVYCHATTED HAPPILY TO HISDAD AND SISTER BERYLIN MANCHESTER.

" I try to call him at least once

By JANE MARSHALLdirect from the Hollywood film seta week," Davy explained, as hereplaced the receiver. "Wealways talk about the samethings, but it's good just to hearhis voice and know he's well."

Taking another swig of tea,he then began to arrange somecigarettes into a small jar onthe dressing -table.

" It's nice and cosy in here, isn't it" he said, looking aroundthe trailer proudly.

Noticing that the dominantcolour was blue, Davy hastilyconfirmed that this was hisfavourite colour, "almost every-thing I own is blue," he told me.

"Hey, did I tell you I'm buy-ing a farm?" he asked meexcitedly.

" It's in Malibu, actually, nottoo far from the beach. It's reallygroovy. I have about 14 acresof land, and about 200,000 acressurrounding it, which I hopeto buy up eventually" helaughed.

" MEANWHILE, I'M GOINGTO GET SOME HORSES, ANDBUILD SOME STABLES. THEHOUSE IS A GAS, ANDTHERE ARE TWO GUESTHOUSES, SO EVERYONECAN COME OUT ANDSTAY."

He began to make neat pilesof the various magazines and

7N 17400

papers lying on top of thedressing -table.

I asked him about the newhouse he had bought in theHollywood Hills.

"I haven't had the time to domuch to it, since we left on thetour a few days after I movedin, anyway. Now with the farm,I'll probably be spending mostof my time out there."

A sudden knock at the doorinterrupted his thoughts.

" Who's there ? Davy yelled."You're in the next shot Dave.

We're ready for you," the voiceanswered.

Vanished"Be right back," he told me

jumping up. With a quick glancein the mirror, and an apologeticlook back at me he vanished.

At this point I wasn't abso-lutely certain whether I couldget out of the chair anyway, let alone go on the set to watchthe scene.

However, the sudden joyousthought of being a permanentfixture in Davy Jones' dressing -room seemed rather appealing.Nevertheless, an attempt to movewas made, I think rather fromshock.

I'D SUDDENLY HEARD AHEAVY EARTH SHATTER-

"I'm just testing my new tennisshoes" he told me calmly, wavingcheerfully.

I told him I never realisedhe was so energetic, and howsuper that he had decided totake up tennis. He gave me apuzzled look.

"Tennis!" he muttered, "Whosaid anything about taking uptennis."

Hastily changing the subject.I asked how the helicopter hewas building was coming along?

"Outa sight, man it's thegrooviest thing ever," he ex-citedly told me.

Then, wrinkling up his nose,Pipe -smoking MIKE,

he gave me another quizzledlook, and again muttered"Tennis," and wandered offscratching his head.

Davy returned. Taking a swigof tea, he began telling me abouthis new shop, ZILCH, soon tobe opened in New York.

BEE GEES MAY GIVE YOU 'WORLD' NEXT!BARRY GIBB was sitting on the floor whitening a pair

of boots, while Maurice sat playing " MorningtownRide " on the guitar. Their brother Robin was having hishair combed by a driver called Jim, and Conn Petersen andVince Melouney were discussing what clothes to wear. Thatwas the scene in the Bee Gees dressing room at BBC -TV'sLime Grove studio when I popped round to see themrecently.

Also present were the group'smanager Robert Stigwood (whowas sitting in the corner read-ing a teeny-bopper magazine)and a covey of road managers, personal assistants and drivers.

The group was preparing totape " Massachusetts " for a " TopOf The Pops " programme.

All of them are more delightedwith the success of " Massachu-setts " than they were when theirfirst hit " New York MiningDisaster " entered the chart-andthat's not just because " Massachu-setts " is selling better.

" It's simply that this is our firstreally big British hit," explainedBarry, knocking his jar of whiten-ing over. " Wouldn't it be nice ifwe got to No. I ? "

The others nodded in agree-ment. Maurice looked up fromhis guitar. " We've just finisheda song called " World " whichwill probably be our next single."The group intends that the

public will hear the song for thefirst time when they play at theSaville Theatre, next month.

Excited" We're all very excited about the

Saville show," continued Barrywiping up the mess he had made." It's now beginning to take shapeand it's really going to be some-thing that people have never seenbefore."

Question -time with FRANKIE VAUGHAN"WE'VE been together now for forty years" is a favourite Frankie Vaughan song.

Although seventeen years isn't even half that period, it's still a long time to be inshow business, to be still topping bills and, even more surprising, to have records in thecharts. Frankie, in fact, seems to have been with us always ! And we're happy to thinkhe'll be with us for a long time to come.

n What has kept you atn the top for so long ?A All I can say is that it's

the public. AlthoughI'd like to think it was myshowmanship as an enter-tainer that has kept theminterested for so long.

How does it feel to beback in the charts ?

A Very nice. It's very"1 nice indeed to make arecord and have it get intothe charts. I believed inthis song and did notrecord it with any thoughtof a chart success.

It was just a great songfor me to perform, the sortof thing I can put over incabaret, and I'm glad thatpeople are buying it.

Record shops have toldme that the kids are buyingit, too.

n What do you think ofthe pop scene just

now ?A I'm very thrilled with it. There

are great opportunities for goodsongs and good arrangements to getinto the charts again.

QAnd what about flower -power ?

AI'm very suspicious of the wholeflower -power scene. These

young people try to denounce whatwe call a civilised life and I know,

by

ANNEMACKENZIE

personally, that this never works.Unfortunately, those connected

with it admit to drugs, and that isn'ta proper scene in any language.I'm glad to see that the Beatles havegiven them up.

If the flower people want to dressthe way they do, that's fine. Goalong with the trends, but those inthe public eye should try to set agood example.

We're a very tolerant nation, andwe have put up with a lot. ThankGod the Nazis aren't here-theywouldn't have stood for it.

I don't want to be thought of asa knocker, and a lot of people havetaken exception to what I say, buttI just wish that the kids would geta hold of themselves and realisethat it isn't worth getting involved, that anything to do with drugs andfree love must be wrong.

Q11

You're still very interested inboys' clubs, aren't you ?

A I'm very actively concerned withthe boys' clubs. The kids there

get involved in something ratherthan hanging about street comersin their weekend clothes.

The clubs aren't regimented, though. There is plenty of roomfor the individual, but they all muckin together and get somethingworth while out of it.fl What about your own plans forn the future ?A Well, before this record got into

the charts I was fully bookedtill next spring. Now I'm havingto fit in slots whenever I can, butI'm still sticking to my originalplans which were made as far ,backas last spring.11 Will there be a follow-up to

" There Must Be A Way " ?A We've just completed an LP

which will be released at theend of this month, and a singlewhich was recorded at the sametime as " There Must Be A Way "will be coming out soon.

Is this next single specificallyn aimed at the chart ?A No. We just did a bunch of

songs that we love and wereright for me. Naturally I hope itwill be a chart success.

By NORRIE

DRUMMOND

Manager Stigwood dropped hismagazine and suggested we alladjourn to the restaurant forref neshments.

Over a plate of spaghetti,Barry tried to explain to me thesuccess of the Bee Gees. " Thereare a few reasons," he began." Fitstly I think we give thepublic melodies. And secondlywe don't attempt to preach atanyone. There are so many groups which

try to change the world. We, Ithink, are simply a pop groupwhich writes all its own songs. Wewrite songs about people andsituations-we tell stories in oursongs but we don't give sermons."

How comeHow was it, I asked Barry, that

someone like himself who was just21 had such an awareness of life.

" I've no idea," he confessed." I assume that some people have itand others don't. I've always beeninterested in people and I supposethat helps. Some people are sensi-tive and sentimental while othersaren't, it's the same type of thing.

" I don't think it's necessarilybecause we've seen more thansome people our age. It's more acase of being interested in theother bloke-a sort of understand-ing if you like."

The conversation rolled round tothe Bee Gees compositions. WasBarry happy with the recordings oftheir songs made by other artzats,I enquired.

" To be honest, Norrie, notreally. I think every songwritermust feel as we do, but some-how no one who has recordedone of our numbers has made asgood a job as we had hoped. When you write a song you havean idea of how it should be sungbut It doesn't work out that wayif someone else records it." No one so far has been able

to get the proper feel of a song.Maybe in time we'll come to acceptthat this is the way it's got to be.

" Playwrights must feel the sameway I suppose when they see anactor portraying the characters theyhave created."

Despite the fact that several artistshave recorded very beautiful BeeGees' songs, no one has yet had ahit with one, so there may besomething in what Barry says.

ClothesThe conversation changed to the

more light-hearted subject of Oodles. In the past week the group has

been widely criticised for the out-rageous clothes they wore on TV.Recently several magazines des-cribed them as " buffoons " - aword which amuses themimmensely.

" We tried to wear something alittle bit different," said Barrysmiling. " But it didn't work andso we'll now try something else."

In what ways have their liveschanged in the past six months Iasked.

" Hugely," Barry answeredimmediately. " After all, when wearrived in London, we had nothing. We were unknown. We had norecording contract and no work.

" We could have been sleepingon park benches now but fortunatelyeverything turned out well-muchbetter than we had ever hoped."

It's our gain too that the BeeGees decided to come and settlehere. They are a group with anenormous talent and I feel that along and exciting career is justbeginning for them.

On sale Friday, week ending October 14, 1967 NEW MUSICAL EXPRESS- ADVERTISER'S ANNOUNCEMENT 5

This is the story ofDavid McWilliams.David McWilliams is a folk singer from Ireland-where the Dubliners and

Frankie McBride come from, of course. Soon he will be very famous, sellingmillions of records all over the world, signing lots of autographs and appearingon television. But for the first time we are telling you all about a pop singerjust BEFORE he becomes a star and EVERYONE knows EVERYTHING.

David McWilliams is a 6 ft. tall Irishman, born

on the fourth of July, 1945, in Cregagh, Belfast. He

has blue eyes and dark hair and an incredibletalent for singing the beautiful songs he writes. He drinks beer and cares little about the ways of

the world.

Seven years ago he was expelled from Ballymena

Technical School for drinking wine between lessons.

He was 'put out' of engineering training college

at the age of 18 for not turning up regularly - hespent the absent days sitting by the seashorethinking up songs.

David followed his father into the engineering

trade as a fitter in a torpedo factory. But thatdidn't last a day longer than the two-year ap-prenticeship he had signed on for.

in the record business heard David making a de-

monstration disc and was so impressed that he

His talent lay in music-not in building torpedoes,

and he waited for the chance to earn a living writing

and singing. The chance came when a man way up

persuaded a top manager to listen to him.

Now his talent is being praised by the peoplewho know top pop stars, disc jockeys, producers and promoters. They have all heard his

Major Minor single "HARLEM LADY" and "THEDAYS OF PEARLY SPENCER" and his album"DAVID McWILLIAMS" . .

Have you ?

TRAVEL IS NIGHTMARE FOR SMALL FACESrirHE Small Faces-most often-a- through no fault of their own-find great difficulty in gettingfrom place to place, i.e. inter-views, photographic sessions andgigs. And so it was last weekthat I went to them or rather toRonnie "Plonk" Lane's pad justoff Earls Court.

What with a lively discussionbetween him and his father onthe Beatles' new philosophy oflife-Ronnie is one of " yerac-tual" meditators-a sneak pre-view of the new Beach Boys"Smiley Smile" LP and hislovely girl -friend "Susie" to lookat, it proved a very pleasantrainy afternoon.

Having relieved me of my rain-coat Ronnie settled into his arm-chair and talked of the Faces'travelling problems.

"Last week we arrived at Norwichrto find the promoter had us downto play the day before," saidRonnie, "all the publicity was forthe day before so only a few kidsturned up-then we missed a gigat Streatham completely.

Missed turn"That was because we were

returning from a Paris TV showand Stevie's French taxi drivermissed the airport!

"At least the driver missed theturnoff on the motorway andbecause it was a motorway theyhad to go right to the end to turnround, by which time the planehad gone. Anyway, by that timewe'd realised we were at the wrongairport and went for the right one.

"Poor Steve arrived at Londonaround midnight with no money, stranded. We'll have to make it upto them and play the gig anothertime.'"

Seeing the Small Faces on stageis becoming something of a raritythese days and I asked Ronnie ifthis was a deliberate policy to playless ballrooms and clubs. This weekthey are off promoting in Europeand next month there are only twobookings for live performances.

"Let's face it, ballrooms andclubs are a bit of a drag now,"said Ronnie, "we've done two -and -a -half years hard of those kind ofdates. Anyone who wanted to seeus must have had the chance bynow.

" When I was a kid I neverwanted to go to see the big groups

who you saw on TV all the time-I went to see the inner cirole groupslike Nero and the Gladiators, thePiltriown Men and I used to standwith me mouth agape while JimmyPage played guitar for theCrusaders.

"We have to get out and aboutto find new ideas for our songs.Steve and I took a cabin cruiserdown the Thames recently-TheMaid Maureen-two ideas for songscame out of that.

"We got as far as Reading, hitevery mudbank between there andThames Ditton.

"We've got a tour in Australiabeing negotiated for a couple ofmonths time and a loon -up in thePhilippines before that. You've gotto get out and do things or youfind a brick wail when you're look-ing for new songs. "Itchycoo Park"was written on our last Europeantour."

Talking ceased for a while andlistening began as Ronnie's vege-tarian lunch was brought in bySusie, and he set about his cauli-flower and cheese sauce while thenew Beach Boys' album "SmileySmile" was playing.

This album is going to standsome Beach Boy fans right on theirheads because much of the materialand interpretation is straight out ofthe Mothers of Invention land.

It might well have been titled

SMALL FACES during a recent TV appearance (1 to r) : IANMcLAGAN, STEVE MARRIOTT, RONNIE " PLONK " LANE

and KENNY JONES.

Keith Althaminterviews

`PLONK' LANE & DAD"Music To Get Stoned By" or"How High Brian Wilson?" Letme add, hastily, that it is brilliantlyplayed-has a deliberate ambiguityso that you can enjoy it even ifyou miss the point, and is anothermasterful piece of production.

A great deal is satirical, and"Vegetables," in which the listenersare invited to write letters namingtheir favourite vegetable after whichthey'll feel better, is one of themost outstanding tracks.

Other titles include the "dreamy""She's Going Bald"-Frank Zappafor Pope ; " Getting Hungry "-theMike Love/Brian Wilson opusissued as a single here; "WindChimes"-which sounds like whatit says ; " With Me Tonight " andan extraordinary instrumental.

Ronnie summed it all up quitesuccinctly between mouthfuls of

cauliflower. "A lot of peoplewon't be able to see the woodfor the trees. It sounds as thoughWilson recorded the whole thingat home."I understand he has a recording

studio built into his house-that'sthe way to do it, man. The BeachBoys were getting too intricate andintellectual - there's some nice, simple things here, it's nice ! "

Following a brainful of BeachBoys I got a mindful of KenNordine and his "Colours" albumavailable here on Philips.

A spoken narrative of the verbalassociations of colours, e.g. "Oliveis over -used, Lavender is an old, old, old old woman, Burgundymoves slowly" against musical set-tings it is a great deal more cleverthan I can make it sound in coldprint.

"It's Steve's LP," said Ronnie,"Great isn't it?"

It was about this time that itall began to happen, for as Stevewas lighting a cigarette (he likes toroll his own) his dad arrived.

Mr. "Plonk" Lane proved to bea stocky, bespectacled, grey-hairedman with a Volkswagen.

He is a very pleasant, down toearth person who has obviouslyworked very hard as a lorry driverbut in no way resents his son'ssuccess and there is a good warmrelationship between them.

The discussion began inreference to the Beatles' recentTV appearances a n d theirattitudes toward Yoga andmeditation.Dad took the part of a very

typical parent and Ronnie was care-ful not to express himself tooforcefully and offend his father, but very clearly it illustrated the oldand the new attitudes. Thisdiscussion, if not verbatim is, afair reflection of the conversation.

"I don't think Lennon andHarrison should have done thoseprogrammes" (Trost Programme'),said Mr. Lane. "The average manin the street doesn't have the timefor all this deep thinking.

"A lorry driver comes home, watches a bit of TV, and then goesto the local for a drink and gameof cards with the lads.

"He doesn't want to sit theremeditating on the state of theworld. His immediate concerns arehis family, his wage packet and hiscar."

"And you know, as well as I do,that all these material things won'tbring him happiness," said Plonk."Not the car, not the TV or themoney. This idea isn't deep at all.

the Mahareshi and theBeatles suggest is that people wouldlive better, more effective lives, ifthey sat down for a few minuteseach day and thought about things.

"Young people are desperatelyunhappy doing jobs they don'tlike and now they are asking, why should we? I was unhappyin the factory where I worked.During your life -time you wentthrough two world wars and therewasn't much time to think aboutthings, but now there is and thechance to do something aboutit."But you're, an exception,"

countered Mr. Lane, "you'veworked hard and you have talent. Most kids don't even want toentertain themselves today or any-one else."

"You only think that becauseI'm your son," said Ronnie. "Themilkman could have done what I'vedone if he had wanted to know andmade the effort.

Normal"Ultimately what will happen is

that the teachings of people likeMahareshi will be adopted into thenormal education."

"But you can't impress abstractand collective ideas upon indivi-duals " said Mr. Lane. " verydifficult to convince a docker thathe should be learning Yoga whenhe's fighting for a wage increase tokeep his wife and children."

"All this is relative to theindividual," said Ronnie, " it wouldhelp them put things in perspective. It is happening. It will happen. Theacorn is there in the ground andfrom acorns you get oaks."

And that ended the debate ofLane versus Lane as I regretfullyhad to leave. I returned five minuteslater to get my raincoat (Ronniegets more raincoats that way).

"Don't put that in the copy,"grinned R o n n i e. Incidentally,Ronnie, that red biro you write allyour songs with and which youlent me-I still have (I get morebiros that way).

FOLKSY SCOTT McKENHE

I SMASH NIT*" Like An Old Time Movie "/" What's The

Difference-Chapter II " (CBS).A BEAUTIFUL record from Scott Mc-

Kenzie, bearing no relation whatever to" San Francisco " or the flower movement. It's folksy and poignant, with a gentle beat.

BOBBY HEBB" Everything Is Coming rp Roses " /

" Bound By Love " (Philips). This isn't the standard ballad so

often recorded in the past, but abrand new swinger from the Penn-Oldman team. It's driving r -and -b,with Bobby Hebb giving out Inthroaty tones, indulging in occasionalshouts, screams and spoken asides.

It's the real stuff, all right-a realpiledriver. But not so different fromscores of other discs in similar vein.

FLIP Another authentic r -and -bnumber, with a jogging jerk beat, andMr. Hebb laughing and chuckling hisway through the happy lyric. Crispbrass sound.

Opens with just an acoustic guitar backing-then, when it slips into tempo, the stringsjoin in as well.

I honestly think that the scoring of the stringsection is the best I've heard on any pop record-it's absolutely gorgeous. The John Phillips lyric isequally attractive, and Scott handles it tenderly.

Not so obviously commercial as his recent No.1, but a disc that's a credit to pop-and itthoroughly deserves to be a smash.

FLIP : A self -penned item, and an extension of theB' side of " Frisco." A philosophical lyric, express-

ively sung, with rippling guitar and background strings.

JONNY ROSS"Push A Button"/"Along The Way"

(Columbia).Don't worry-this isn't a song

about the H-bomb ! It deals with theage of automation, and is treated ingrandiose .big -ballad style-with cas-cading strings, concerto -type pianoand heavenly choir.

Exceedingly well sung by Columbia'snew hope, who displays a remarkablevocal range. The lyric is thought -provoking, though like most ballads-the tune takes several plays beforeit begins to hit home.

But I can't see it In the chart.FLIP The title song from a new

film, with a happy-go-lucky good -to -be -alive quality.

SizzlingLos Bravost "Like Nobody Else" / "Wear-

ing A Smile" (Decca).IT'S just about a year ago that

Los Bravos were in the fore-front with " Black Is Black "-and their sound today shows verylittle change.

It's a mixture of reverberatingguitars, walloping drums, tam-bourine, maraccas, organ and back-ground brass-in fact, the lot.

The vocal is soloed with falsettochanting-from which you'll seethat this disc has got just abouteverything. It's also got a Bee Geescomposition, which should enhanceits chances, even though it's not oneof their best. A vibrant and sizz-ling, if unprogressive, sound.

FLIP : This track's even morefrantic, with the drummer positivelygoing berserk. Pity in a way, as it'sa pretty tune, and it's better with-out such an uninhibited backing.

ROMANTIC IVYS" Thank You. For Loving Me " /" In The Not Too Distant Future "

(PY4vES, I like this one-it's an ex-

tremely easy -on -the -ear romanticballad, set to a slowly -paced beat.

But it's principal quality is the IvyLeague's interpretation-delightfullysung with falsettos and counter -harmonies weaving in and out ofthe main melody line, and a slightclassical influence in the scoring.

It's soothing and hummable, and a thoroughly professional job.Doesn't strike me as having agreat deal of chart impact, butI hope I'm wrong.FLIP : An up -beat number, with

a heavily recorded bass exaggeratingthe beat-and despite the pace, anunderlying rich cello sound. Goodcontrast from the top side.GRAHAM BONNEY

1." Papa Joe "/" My Jenny "(Columbia).

A very commercial disc from youngGraham Bonney, which could well hitthe high spots if the Radio 1 d-j'slatch on to it.

There are several la -la passageswhich you feel compelled to join In,a backing group having a ball, abrass section, and an irresistibletoe -tapping brat. This, plus Graham's forthright and

unpretentious style, makes It weltworth while.

FLIP : Same applies here, exceptthat it's a straight forward medium -pacer with a nostalgic lyric. A pleas-ant tune, competently handled, withan impressive backing.

CRISPIANST. PETERS

" Free Spirit " / " I'm AlwaysCrying " (Decca).

Incredible how Crisplan St. Petersmade such a tremendous impact In thefirst half of 1966, then faded rightout of the picture. Now he's backagain-with a number he hasn'twritten himself.

It's a snappy bouncer, with a verycommercial catch -line, and the titlephrase continually repeated in multi-track. The tune is simple and regis-ters quickly, and the beat makes youwant to dance. But for all its quali-ties, I can't be too optimistic aboutits chances.

FLIP : Largely dual -tracked, this isa peppy number, with twangy guitarsand rattling tambourine. Strong per-sonality performance from the singer.

EQUALS" Give Love A Try " / " Another Sad

And Lonely Night " (President).Try and dig this one If you can !

It's a btluesy rockaballad with a reallyfascinating lyric.

The lead singer is backed by echochanting and a deep rich sound-nodoubt caused by the Equals employ-ing two rhythm guitars Instead of theusual one.

The song suggests love as theanswer to the world's problems-it's amessage we've heard before, I know, but this time it's wrapped in a veryacceptable package.

FLIP : Despite the title and thewistful lyric, the tempo speeds intoup -beat here. A very ordinary song, bug the presentation lifts It out of therut.

The WHO (I to r) KEITH MOON, JOHN ENTWISTL E, ROGER DALTREY and PETE TOWNSHEND.

EAR -SHATTERING WHOWORTH WAITING FOR*" I Can See For Miles " / " Someone's Coming (Track)IT'S been quite a while since we last had a single from the

Who, but their fans will undoubtedly think that it's beenwell worth waiting for-because it's right up their street. You could scarcely mistake it for any other group.

The boys generate an ear -shattering wall of sound - withpenetrating rasping guitars,heavy-handed drumming andconstant cymbal -crashing, andPete Townshend's vocal ridingsmoothly above the all -happeningbacking.

Strident, repetitive, raucous andbeaty-but it's also charged withdynamite and laden with atmos-phere. Not quite so tuneful assome of their hits, but another bigone.

FLIP : The throbbing mid -tempobeat is augmented by a trumpetsection on this track. It's quite acatchy tune, too-and the lyric isnovel and cute.

* TIPPED FOR CHARTSCHART POSSIBLE

Young Idea sparklet " Mr. Lovin' Luggage Man" / "Room With A View " (Columbia).AIlER making their chart debut with a Lennon -McCartney song

the Young Idea switch to a Les Reed -Barry Mason original. Andwhat a sparkling disc it is, too.

The lads sing brightly, spiritedly and with bags of gusto-aided by ascintillating, bustling Arthur Greenslade accompanist, and an enthusiastic-ally enchanting group.

It's punchy, exhilarating and danceable. But regretfully not one of thebest tunes to be written by these composers. I can only give it a 50-50-thane.

FLIP : An ear -catching vocal blend is the principal feature of thisrhythmic ballad. Absorbing lyric, too, and I like the occasional switchto double-time emphasised by tambourine.

PAUL (right) and BARRY RYAN.

Paul and Barryupdate an oldie

"Heartbreaker "/" Night Time " (MGM).THIS has always been a popular sing -along number-I remember

playing the original on BFN many years ago. Which showshow old it is And me But let me assure you that there'snothing dated or corny about this version.

It's set to a swinging jingle beat-Which, together with the biting brass, suggests a Tijuana influence.

And there's a backing girl groupto offset the Ryans' personable duet.

It's a happy-go-lucky numberand a guaranteed blues -chaser.And if you don't already knowthe tune, you'll soon pick it up.Stands a good chance.

PETER, PAUL &MARY

" The House Song " / " Bob Dylan'sDream " (Warner Brothers).

After their venture into therock'n'roll idiom with their last single,Peter, Paul and Mary revert to theauthentic folk style with this new one.

Soloed by Peter - who sometimessings so softly you can scarcely hearhim-and with the other two chantingsweetly in the background, it's backedby strings, acoustic guitars and oboe.

It's wispy and relaxing, with athoughtful lyric, and is eminentlylistenable. But it's not chartmaterial.FLIP : Again very folksy, but with

rather more of a beat. Ensemblevocal, featuring the trio's distinctivevocal blend, and with a reflectivelyric.

FLIP : Written by SharonSheeley and Chris Curtis, it's awistful ballad with a slow beat.Attractively harmonised on echo, with a colourful backing.

MOREREVIEWSPAGE 13

MUDt " Flower Power " / " You're My

Mother " (CBS)I know that CBS is expecting a lot

from the new British group whosename is Mud ! But will they comefrom nowhere like the FlowerpotMen ? I doubt it, if only becausetheir debut disc isn't so obviouslycatchy.

All the same, it's pretty good, witha peace -and -goodwill lyric and an ear -catching rippling backing.

Clearly it's in the idiom of theday, and 1 can't discount the pos-sibility of it hitting the chart.FLIP : A great beat here-mid-

tempo accentuated by thumping drumsand hand -claps. But there's virtuallyno tune, and the lyric doesn't live upto the promise of the title.

MATT MONRO" Pretty Polly " / " Release Me "

(capitol). The title song from the new Bayley

Mills film, sung by Matt Monro overthe credit titles in the picture.

An exquisite and descriptive ballad, beautifully sung, with lush stringsand a gentle beat. It's tender andcaressing, and another impeccableperformance by Matt.

FLIP : The Humperdinck hit asyou'd never recognise it. Treatedhere as a sophisticated swinger, witha punchy Basis -like backing, It's agreat styling.

MUSIC EXPLOSION" Sunshine Games "I" Can't Stop

Now " (Stateside).A group that's a sensation in the

States right now. To me, they havea rather dated sound that's a crossbetween the early Kinks and the earlyStones-in fact, the lead singer soundslike the poor man's Jagger.

Certainly they generate an exhilara-ting noise-it's wild unadulteratedr -and -b, with the organ -twangs -drumsbacking creating a shuddering, electri-fying effect.

The tune Is simple and quicklyassimilated, but if this gets into thechart It'll be a retrogressive step.FLIP : A heavy tambourine -

emphasised beat (almost like Mo-town) dominates the backing-other-wise it's very much the mixture asbefore. Okay for energetic dancing.

JOHN'S CHILDREN" Go -Go Girl "/" Jagged Time

Lapse " (Track). If you can resist the compulsion to

dance to this disc, you must be aRadio 3 listener ! It's a sizzling hunkof r -and -b, blended with psychedeliceffects and oscillations, and strings-surprising, but effective-in the back-ground.

Ideal for discotheques, but thewelter of big -name releases coming outsimultaneously may prevent It frommaking the Chart.

FLIP : You'd expect somethingway-out from this title-and you'dget it. Not so much from the treat-ment, as from the lyric, which is verysurrealistic. Unusual !

Lyrical Kinks-a big hit

Contd. frompage 8

* " Autumn Almanac " / " Mr. Pleasant " (Pye).THERE are few groups more capable of painting vivid and descriptive verbal pictures

than the Kinks. This follows the tradition of " Waterloo Sunset " by latching on toevery -day happenings and giving them an absorbing lyrical quality.

Ray Davies takes the lead, andthe other boys join in withcarefree abandon. Like most ofthe Kinks' discs, this is loadedwith commercial appeal - acatchy, if somewhat familiar, tune ; a bouncy beat and afruity sound in the backing.

I wouldn't class it as one of theirvery best discs, if only because themelody has a certain similarity withpast releases. But a big one forsure.

FLIP : A jaunty oom-pah beatcarries along this highly originalstory -in -song. It's a fun disc, andeasily strong enough to be an 'A'side in its own right.

TYPICALORBISON

t "She" / "Here Comes TheRain Baby" (London).

By his yardstick, Roy Orbisonhasn't had a particularly suc-

cessful year in Britain. But nowhe's returned to his familiarformat of a self -penned balladthat builds steadily to a power -packed climax.

Starts quietly, with the Big 0singing sensitively and intimately-then towards the end, as the beatintensifies, he switches to dual -trackand brings his unmistakable falsettointo full use.

It's typical Orbison, and a pleas-ant tune - maybe not quite somelodic as some of his big hits, butprobably good enough to give hima small hit.

FLIP : A plaintive love song, setto a slowing lilting waltz rhythm-with guitar, strings and humminggroup. In view of Engelbert'scurrent success, this would havemade the better `A' side-if itwasn't for the whistled chorus !

ROY ORBISON when heappeared on the Palladium show

during his last visit here.

Instrumental themesNow that " With A Song In My Heart " has been shelved, we've got the

bubbling " A Swinging Choice " as the new signature tune of Radio l's" Famtily Favourites," and you can get it on Parlophone by Brian Fahey andhis Orchestra-a splendid big -band showcase. On Pye, there's the Jazzy themefrom TV's " Man In A Sultctve " brilliantly scored and performed by RonGrainer-and on the same label, the Barry Gray Orchestra plays the lively andhaunting music from the new puppet series " Captain Scarlet," complete withouter -space effects.

'Phe composer Ennio Morricone conducts the orchestra In the theme musicfrom the movie " For A Few Dollars More " (RCA), which features a shufflebeat, a superb guitar solo taking the melody line, and a whistling chorus. TheFrank Charksfield Orchestra and Chorus offers " I've Never Seen AnythingLike It " (Deena) from the eagerly awaited movie " Doctor Dolittle "-It's abright -and -breezy routine which obviously gets the full production treatmentIn the pioture.

Spine quiveringARETHA FRANKLINt A Natural Woman " / "Never

Let Me Go " (Atlantic).A POWERFUL soul -packed

disc that makes your pulsesrace and your spine quiver. Iwas a bit surprised that" Respect " did so well in thiscountry-a superb disc, but a bitout of keeping with Britishtrends.

Same goes for this one-and nowthat Aretha Franklin is establishedhere, I hope this will also click.

Intensely emoted in heartfelt style, and set to a finger -clicking brokenbeat, it's backed by gospel chanting, brass riffs and shimmering strings.

Like so many releases these days,it depends on the air -time it getson Radio 1. But I've got a feelingthe d-j's will like this one, so itcould happen.

FLIP : The tempo slows rightdown for this impassioned soulballad, warbled with all the feelingand sincerity at her command, withorgan prominent in the backing.

POTTED POPSCHRIS CLARK: " From Head To

Toe" (Tamla-Motown). Take ahusky -voiced charmer with rhythmin her very bones, set her againsta typically contagious Tamla back-ing, and you've got a superchargeddisc that almost jumps off the turn-table.

JIMMY ROSELLI: " All The Time "(U -A). This week's special offer onthe sweetcorn counter ! A big -voiced rockaballad, scored in con-certo style, with a lilting rhythmand a choir singing along in thechorus. Square but good.

LIBBY MORRIS: " Bye, Yum, Puna,Pum " (Polydor). One of the songsfrom the new Tommy Steele film" The Happiest Millionaire." As thetitle implies, it's a novelty number, and Libby injects bags of person-ality into her sultry treatment.

ROLF HARRIS: " I've Never SeenAnything Like It" (Columbia). Asparkling routine from " DoctorDolittle," making ideal material forRolf, supported by a boy -and -girlchorus. It's fun-packed and lively, reminiscent of " Flash BangWallop."

EPISODE SIX: " I Can See ThroughYou " (Pye). A thundering beat, with a double-time tambourine anda great guitar sound, underlines thiswell -written number. And there area couple of tempo breaks, with thegroup supported only by flute.

THE FAMILY " Scene Through TheEye Of A Lens " (Liberty). Pro-duced by hit -maker Jimmy Miller, this has a Traffic quality about it.Intriguing lyric, with an unusualsitar -like sound emanating from thetwin -necked guitar, and a punch -packed second half. Sensual andstartling.

DUFFY POWER: " Davy O'Brien "(iparlophone). Here's a saucynumber, engagingly handled by the

CHART RETURN FORNEW STYLE TROGGS"Love Is All Around "1" When Will The Rain Come "

(Page One).NOW that the dispute with their record company is settled, the

Troggs will need to battle to recapture lost ground, as theirlast release didn't register. And I reckon they might well makeit with this one. Certainly they should, as this is easily the bestof their last three issues.

A Reg Presley composition, set to a fairly slow rhythm, with anappealing scoring of guitars, violins and cellos-plus a melody thattakes a little time to register, but once you've got it in your mind,it sticks there ! Reg sings warmly and sincerely-departing from thatrather stilted style which has characterised many of the group's discs.

FLIP : Tempo speeds for this pulsating mid -tempo item, withethereal chanting supporting the lead vocal. It's virtually a Peruviantrend-shades of " Zabadak " !

singer, set to a lively jog -alongbeat. Duffy sings in rhythmic big -voiced style, and I'm sure the girlswill love his provocative approach.

LEWIS & CLARKE EXPEDITION:" I Feel Good " (RCA). A. discfrom the same stable as theMonkees-and it has the sameyouthful freshness. A wonderfullyhappy disc reminiscent of " EvenThe Bad Times Are Good," with atouch of Mexicana thrown in.

DANNY WILLIAMS: " Never MyLove " (Deram). A new -look Dannyon a new label. A rhythmic ballad, convincingly handled - with adelicious backing of cellos, clankingpiano, humming -group and tam-bourine. His most commercial forages.

BRENDA MAY: " I Shouldn't CareAbout You " (Decca). A heart-searching lyric, receiving a dramaticinterpretation from this newcomer.

Varies between the tender and thebig belt. Very nice song, with anoutstandingly lush backing.

JEANNIE LAMB: " This Is MyLove " (CBS). Usually associatedwith jazz, Jeannie offers anunashamed pop ballad here. Anda great job she makes of It, too.Pity the material Isn't a shadestronger. Worth a listen, though.

JOE LOSS ORCHESTRA: " ElizabethI & " (HMV). Always a trend-setter, Joe comes up with somethingcompletely unexpected. It's amadrigal, with harpsichord dominat-ing the backing, but set to a stomp-ing beat with blaring brass.

CALIFORNIANS: " Follow Me "(Deena). A brash and ,vital soundfrom this British group. Extremelycolourful harmonies enhanced by afinger -snapping beat and a pretty-good tune. Makes you feel happyIt's a swingaroo !

DON'TCARE

ABOUTTOP BILLING

THANK goodness for Carl Wayne of the Move ! It is a long timesince I have found anyone new to the scene so pleasant,

co-operative and articulate to interview. This was our firstconfrontation, and I must admit to having doubts about it ; in viewof the Move's more notorious activities, I was fully prepared tofind him with axe in one hand and flower in the other, cow -bellround his neck and full-sized nude likeness of Harold Wilsontattooed on his chest !

I found him, in fact, in the barof a London pub, with an orangejuice in front of him, quietly writinga letter. He was dressed in a sub-dued open -neck shirt, casual trousersand white shoes. Harold Wilsonmight do well to meet this youngman and discover just what is goingon in the minds of the newgeneration.

" Yes, I can see us making head-lines for about the next two years,"smiled Carl, ruefully. " This un-fortunate business with the PrimeMinister was certainly no publicitystunt, though. The good thing hasbeen that the publicity has got ourname known all over the world.

The bad thing is that it has cost usa lot of money and been somethingof an embarrassment to both sides.

" We don't exactly go looking fortrouble, but it seems, to find us,because that's the kind of peoplewe are. The pop musicians wereally admire in this business arethose who don't really care aX!?X! for the establishment. Groupsdike the Stones, the Who and theSmall Faces, who create excitementon stage and off.

" I like people with some swaggerto their personalities, like footballmanager Tommy Docherty or actorRichard Harris, who always seemto be in trouble, but have the

courage to be themselves. Town-shend and Marriott are like this-they have a 'to hell with it all '

attitude." Some people dlaim that artists

like Tom Jones and Humperdinckare slowing the scene down. Nutsto that. They are where they arebecause people want them. I likeTom Jones 'because even when hecomes on stage in a tuxedo he stillcarries his natural -self air abouthim. You get the feeling it's ' goodold Tom the bricklayer,' and hegets what he's doing across.

" If the kids want to ravethey'll rave, and if someone putsout a tour with the Faces, theWho and us we'll bring backthe kind of excitement Haleyand his Comets used to generatein the old days."Carl admits that he likes what he

calls " cocky people " ; people whohave the strength of character toexpress their individuality through

their performance."Did you see Bassey in that

dress doing Hey Big Spender ' theother night on TV ? " he enthused." Now she's got this kind of' front,' and so has Abbe Lane.

" For me the greatest of them allwas Proby-and still is for thatmatter. I went to see him up in Bir-mingham recently and he's still gotit ! But he made a mistake and nowhe only has to make one false moveand the Government deports him. They can't deport us-we're Brit-ish !!! " he added with some satis-faction.

First tourThe Move are, in fact, about to

embark on their first Britisth tour. It's somewhat surprising that it istheir first when you consider theyhave been established for a year withthree big hit records. Carl empha-sised they were waiting for the righttour and the right time.

" We had umpteen offers, includ-ing the Walker Brothers last tour,"said Carl. " We turned that downbecause they refused to let us smashTV sets on stage, a part of our actat the time.

" Anyway we've dropped thatnow-we made our point withit." This tour with Hendrix should

be great. We really dig him. AndTrevor from our group and Noelfrom the Experience are good mates. It should be a very happy tour.

" We really don't care aboutthis top billing business, but webelieve we've achieved enoughto co -headline, which is thearrangement."Perhaps another surprising thing

about this group is that they haveyet to release their first LP.

" We've been getting a lot ofthings together," said Carl. " Itshould be out before Christmas butthey'll be no sensational techniques

MOVE (I to r): BEV BEVAN,ROY WOOD, CARL WAYNE,CHRIS KEFFORD and

-just us playing to entertain as wedo on stage. No bassoons runningbackwards, strings or tapes.

" I mean, what can you do that'snew after the Beatles anyway ? Theycome out with a new LP and killfor about six months everythingeveryone else was going to do ! Youcan't out Beatle the Beatles."

AnnoyedThere are a number of things Carl

does not like, including djs whoaccuse them of not being able toreproduce their sound on stage. They will, can and have! Hefavours the direct method ofapproach when insulted and quiterecently offered to alter the shape ofJonathan King's face at "Top OfThe Pops" following depreciativeremarks Jonathan had made aboutthe group. It makes a change fromthe Love Generation anyway !

Later I felt it was a good thingthat we got on so well and that Ilike the Move as a group. I'vealways been a sucker for a right -hook and when it comes to well-built individUals like Carl who sipsorange juices, I am extremely care-ful !

N. R. KNOWLES (Ripley, Derby):Is the pop music scene a closedshop? It seems that the only peoplewe ever hear about are the alreadyrich and famous, and that thereis no place for up and comingtalent.

There is a mine of untapped talentwhich, given the break, could makeit really big and add some life tothe charts

J. JAMES (Harrow): I am verypleased to see that the Heard areat last getting some recognition.

I have been watching them on stageat the Marquee for over a year andthey are one of the few groups Icould go to see again and again.

They have a great musical talentand I hope that their next recordwill be one of their own compo-sitions such as "Have You EverBeen On Your Own" or 'MixedUp Minds."

RUTH FELL (Dewsbury); Whilelistening to the B aides of threeearly Byrds' records recently, Irealised the considerable talent ofGene Clark who wrote the songs,"I Knew I'd Want You," "SheDon't Care About Time" and "FeelA Whole Lot Better."

I also managed to get a copy ofGene's solo record " Echoes " andwas completely staggered by thesound. It's a Dylan -like song withan intriguing backing and a bot.uti-ful vocal.

The Byrds lost a lot when Gene Clarkleft, but I do hope he gets theattention he deserves as a soloartist.

JAN WALLIN (Gothenburg, Sweden):After having seen John Mayall'sBluesbreakers I must comment onwhat a mafvellous group they are.

On the show here they bad to -to fourextra numbers, including theirlatest release "Suspicion," becausethe audience wouldn't let them go.

I have seen Jimi Hendrix, the Cream, the Hollies, the Traffic and othertop English groups but none ofthem got anything like the appre-ciation given to John Mayall.

C. J. BURTON (Southall, Middx.):I am glad to see that Bobby Veehas reached the American Top 3with his record "Come Back WhenYou Grow Up," after such a longabsence from the charts.

He is now a very polished artist andI hope this record will put him backon the map in Britain.

Ex -Supreme goes soloEX -SUPREME Florence Ballard has just signed a five-year solo recording contract with

Tamla-Motown, and will shortly start work on her first sessions for the label. In themeantime, her replacement Cindy Birdsong, who looks so much like Florence that when they'reon stage you can hardly tell them apart, has been working with the Supremes since early Julyon all their dates, including Las Vegas and Hollywood.

Before joining the group,Cindy was with Patti La Belleand the Bluebells and she stayedwith them for six years beforemaking the switch. She has yetto record with Diana Ross andthe Supremes-their current hit" Reflections " was cut beforeFlorence left, and it is alsounderstood Florence attendedthe session for their next single.

NEW YORK is to have itsown Monterey Festival !

Young Rascals manager andwell known promoter Sid Bern-stein, is planning to hold a NewYork Pop Festival, possibly inCentral Park, next summer, which will be run along similarlines to Monterey, and will alsoprobably be spaced out as athree-day event.

Monterey itself was so successfulthat it will become an annualevent.

STONES U.S. TOUR'TALK is, that immigration1 permitting, the Rolling

Stones will return here for aNovember tour ! There had beenrumours of such before theirvisit here two weeks ago, butnow it is understood that plansare going ahead for the groupto make their first concert tourin two years, providing they canget the necessary clearance.

Because American sympathy iswith Keith Richard and MickJagger, if they do tour, it couldturn out to be their mostsuccessful and biggest grosseryet.

SCOTT TELLS WHY JOHN GETS SO `ANGRY'!NMExclusive

By Keith AlthamPERHAPS the most refreshing discovery to make

of Scott McKenzie, who arrived in Britainfor a few days' promotion with the Mamas andPapas recently, is that he has that invaluablequality of being able to laugh at himself.

" They're calling my first album The Voice OfScott McKenzie,' which is about the subtlest thingI've very heard," Scott declared drily.

"However, I suppose it could have been worse. Itmight have been ' The Nose Of Scott McKenzie' or' The Ear Of Scot McKenzie.' At least they are con-cerned with promoting my voice this time and not thatflower power nonsense, which just got out of allproportion."

In addition to the album, which should be releasedwithin the month " the voice of S.M." can also beheard on his forthcoming single, " Just Like An OldTime Movie," released this week and reviewed onpage 8.

Different follow-up" Isn't it a great production job? " enthused Scott.

" We wanted to do something different from ' SanFrancisco ' and John wrote this specially for me. Iwrote the flip -side, ' What's The Difference,' which hasthe strangest string sound since Mantovani started."

Returning to the album, I discovered that Scott hasincluded two of his favourite Tim Hardin compositions-" Reason To Believe " and " Don't Make Promises ";a Donovan composition called " Celeste," and a JohnSebastian number, It's Not Time."

" Don was actually in the States when we cut hiscomposition and he plays guitar on the track," saidScott. John Sebastian's song, which he wrote andrecorded with the Lovin' Spoonful, has an interestingstory behind it." It includes lines like ' We've taken sides in anger

and we can't back down ' and in fact it refers to anoccasion when the group were rehearsing with oneanother in New York and two of them had a row andwalked out. That was when John wrote the song andI think it's one of the most beautiful he has everwritten."

In addition to these tracks there are also four JohnPhillips compositions and two of Scott's own com-positions.

We talked about his immediate impressions ofEngland on this his first visit here.

It's funny but I feel as though I've been herebefore," he revealed. " It's the first time that I'veever felt like that about a place. Maybe it's becausemy:, grandparents on my mother's side were English.

The episode with Cass at Southampton, when shewas arrested, was unpleasant but I guess the police arethe police wherever you go in the world! "

Apart from his healthy outdoor activities, Scott hasalso visited the Speakeasy to see and hear Eric Burdon.

Scott maintains that he does not like " promotingmyself," which implied he is not a " pushy " person, but in spite of this he is anxious to meet the Pressin this country and other European countries and hetalks abstrusely of "media, communication and concern."

For this reason he is not joining the Mamas and

and the arrest thatmade us all angry

qcorr McKENZIE and the Mamas andPapas arrived at Southampton docks

aboard the liner France last Thursday, to findthemselves confronted by a posse of policeand plain -clothes men who promptly arrestedCass-with some difficulty.

When I arrived at their Press reception late thatafternoon Michelle was still tearful and full ofthe tale.

" Cass is in jail, and I still can't believe it," saidMichelle. "I just burst into tears and ran to John, yelling, ` They're taking her away.' We askedone officer to produce a warrant, and he said hedid not need one. Then three of them tried topull Cass out of our car and into their own. Finally, three officers won the tug of war and tookher off. We went to the police station and theyrefused to let me see her even."

The following day the charges against Cass ofstealing two blankets and keys from a hotel inKensington-as though that warranted detention inprison overnight-were dismissed. Cass held herown Press reception at the Royal Garden hotelto explain.

In spite of it all she asserted that our Englishpolicemen were wonderful, although she was lessappreciative of the hotel which had brought thecharges.

" I was kept in the ' nick ' overnight," assertedCass, and repeated the word " nick " at well-chosenintervals, as it was a new English word she hadjust learnt.

Papas on their holiday in Majorca but going on to" somewhere in Scandinavia " to meet people. Our final note was one of good humour again. I

asked him how he made out shopping with the tenfranc note which John slipped him as English currencythe previous night?

" Did he say that? " laughed Scott. " Now that'sridiculous. Nobody gives me any money! They don'ttrust me. In fact I did go shopping though - downthe King's Road. I bought a white lace shirt."

He strived to get some of his own back on John byrevealing: " He is very angry about all these peoplemaking new LPs." Scott was referring to the Mamasand Papas decision to not record until they can cameup with something new.

He's very angry with the Rolling Stones and whenhe heard the Beatles were recording he was furious. In fact, when he sees Paul McCartney he is going topop him right in the eye! "

This attitude, which I have heard John himself repeat,is, I hasten to add, a large scale " put on " and verymuch an " in " joke among the group. Phillips andMcKenzie are both " gentle "-men in the finest senseof the word.

DUBLINERSSTILL MISSOUT LAST

TWO VERSES !NO greater welcome to London

could have been given to theDubliners than the one the audiencegave them at the Royal Albert Halllast Friday (October 6).

Their bawdy Irish pub repertoiregained enthusiastic applause from anaudience which, it is only fair to say, consisted of a more than liberalsprinkling of exiles from their nativeland.

Leaving their big hit as a finale.they built up the tension superblywith their Irish folk songs taking theentire second half of the programme.

But when they did eventually getaround to " Nights " they dis-appointed the audience by not includ-ing the last two verses.

David McWilliams, the boy withthe big publicity campaign behindhim, is an artist of considerabletalent, voice and musical composition, but his debut was in the wrongconcert.

His reception was good, but wouldhave been better had the audience notcome hell bent on hearing Irish folkmusic.

With the right audience David'sresponse would have been tremendous.

The other group on the bill, theKerries, was a rather ordinary folkgroup with a fairly good girl singerwho, at times, reminded me of JudithDurham.

In general it was a good evening'sentertainment, well compered byDominic Behan, who held the atten-tion of everyone in a way only hecan do. T.B.

Hendrix has been booked to the Saville tooperhaps we can get used to having his brilliancelacking. His Saville performance on Sunday was

old favourites-"The Wind Cries Mary," "BurningLamp," "Foxy Lady" and the ever popular "Wildwas partly the trouble.

We've come to expect the num-bers and while dazzled by hisdexterity and range we're satiatedby the number of times we've heardthe items.

Still, Hendrix is a ventriloquist ofthe guitar, committing adultery withit one minute, torturing it the next.Interspersing the act with wry com-ments, playful insults and indiscreetelectronic whines.

" Foxy Lady " was a shatteringnumber and I'm surprised the card-board ruins-left from " Mid-summer Night's Dream " - didn'tcrumble under the blast. Mitch'sdrum solo fizzed inconsistently andleft one slightly disappointed.

Nat a sensational set fromHendrix, merely superior to almostanything else around !

Arthur Brown did his famousimpression of a flaming Christmaspudding. At times I'm convincedhe's Lord Sutch in drag, at othersPinnochio on a spree !

He leaps and loons, creeps andthreatens and throws in littie poemsof dubious taste. He has a trulyincredible voice which deservesbetter material.

" I Put A Spell On You " isdijoll, and " Give Them A Flower "hilarious. His single " Devil's Grip "is better an stage than. disc. Brownis an entertainer and a good onebut his music seems of little value.

Could be bigThe Herd will one day be very

big. They are a talented, integrated, good looking group. I believe themto be a potentially very importantgroup but they continually dis-appoint.

They attempt, bravely, to enter-tain, and they deserved a moresympathetic reception from theaudience. Half way through theyawarded bananas which is aboutwhat some of the audiencedeserved.

" Que Sera " was nice, " FromThe Underworld " showed howmuch it depended on excellent pro-duction but was bravely attempted.Six out of ten for a good effort.Should do well if they persevere.

A group called the Eire Apparantalso appeared. Their main contribu-tion to the evening was a bassguitarist who did an imitation ofRoy Hudd doing an imitation ofMick Jagger and a massacre a" Morning Dew "-a sin that cannotbe forgiven.

Compere Len Marshall was try-ing against difficult odds. Occasion-ally he was extremely trying. J.P.
