Canberra to Lake Eyre

By Rachel Power

In February 2010 my husband and I watched a documentary on the amazing event that is Lake Eyre in flood. Right then and there we decided that should it ever flood again we would be there to experience it. By May, we knew Queensland flood waters would reach Lake Eyre and the Great Aussie Road Trip swung back into action!

This was the first trip for us with the newest member of our family, Edward (Teddy) turning 1 only days before we left. So who are “we”? Jasmine (7), Jemma (5), Teddy (1) myself (Rachel, 31) and my husband Greg (36). June 8th 2010 saw the Power Family hit the road for 3 incredible weeks. We drove 3 days (roughly 1,700kms) from Canberra to Lake EyreWith our trusty 3Dog Camper in tow we set up camp at Halligan Bay and walked over the dune to be greeted by an awesome sight, Lake Eyre. Out there you can’t tell where the sky stops and the water starts. We walked along the sandy banks intrigued by the well preserved array of fish, insects, animals and more that lined the water’s edge.

After a few days at Halligan Bay we decided to fly over the lake to get an idea of the vastness. One of the best ideas ever! You really have an understanding of

why Lake Eyre in flood is such an event, while we were there the Lake was at about 75% surface coverage (not capacity). We were told that most areas of the Lake were no deeper than about 1 foot and that the Lake Eyre Basin (the area of Australia that water drains into the Lake itself) covers one sixth of Australia and four states!

Sad to leave we packed up camp and headed to another of Australia’s gems, Arkaroola. Situated in the Northern Flinders Ranges, Arkaroola is a privately owned Wilderness Sanctuary. We spent about 4 days exploring the various dirt roads, gorges, mountain lookouts and we even got to see the rare Yellow Footed Rock Wallabies. Our children came into their own, hopping over rocks and trees. We realised that while they enjoyed themselves at Lake Eyre, THEY LOVE ROCKS!

camper and short tempers very quickly. We decided to pack camp and head to the Shearer’s Quarters at the Visitor’s Centre – best decision we made this trip! Jasmine sheepishly told us that the rain was all her

fault, she had prayed for it to rain and fill up the Lake so she could see that with water in it too!We managed one morning of exploring the dunes further before our road opened and we headed out. We had been grounded for about 3 days but it was only 1 day later than planned. That was possibly the most memorable drive of our trip, slipping and sliding and driving through puddles that were 50m+ long. The kids LOVED the puddles and squealed with glee every time the muddy water splashed up over the windscreen.

At midnight we arrived home with the joyous thoughts of our warm comfy bed. We had such an incredible time that the girls keep asking “where are going next, and when??”

From Arkaroola we made our way to Menindee Lakes, another area of Australia that had filled with water thanks to the floods. Two years earlier we had visited Menindee and found that only one Lake had water, this time all of them were still filling and a fantastic sight. Camped right on the bank of Lake Pamameroo you just couldn’t ask for a better place, waking up each

morning to be greeted by the awesome sight of the beautiful lake and the well known spindly, bare trees that poke out of the water.

Our last stop was Lake Mungo National Park and contrary to how it sounds this was one Lake that the flood waters didn’t fill, actually it has been dry for around 80,000 years! We arrived and set up camp and raced to the lunettes to watch the incredible display from the dunes and pinnacles at sun set. After heavy rains over night all roads in and out of Mungo were closed and we were left with 3 kids, one

If there is one thing we love to do with the Great Aussie Road Tests, it’s to show you the best products and businesses who cater for families. Recently, we were lucky enough to stay with the Swissôtel Sydney, a five star hotel located right in the heart of the city, walking distance to Darling Harbour, shopping, attractions and the monorail. We travelled to Sydney for business however in our line of work our children are part of our business. It was important to have them with us, yet entertained when we needed. It was for this reason we chose the Swissôtel Sydney.

We booked a Family Package that included two rooms, a one bedroom area with meeting space for the adults and the interconnecting room which was set up as a kids paradise! Swissôtel do a fantastic job with the kids room. Bright blue doona covers and adorable brightly coloured toys in the bedroom, to the bright coloured bath mats, toys and stepping stools in the bathroom. They loved the bubble bath the most!

Being a five star hotel I was a little worried about the “family” treatment, even though they have these wonderful kids rooms I was still sceptical about how we would be welcomed. I needn’t have, as from the second we pulled up outside the front of the hotel the service was impeccable. As we were sorting out the items to take out of the vehicle to check in, a concierge approached offering assistance, they helped us unpack our luggage and our kids! They answered

potential issues or questions before we even thought about them. Our 4WD was too high for the regular parking area so they offered to park it in the loading dock. This was suggested before we found out the hard way!

The check in was painless, even with our three very excited (and over energetic) children. The concierge stayed with us through check in and brought our luggage to our room, unpacking it around the madness that unfolded when the girls discovered their amazing room! He was lovely, he laughed at their glee and energy, making jokes to make us feel more comfortable at their behaviour.

Everything we had ordered was in our room including a cot for our 1 year old, extra coffee for our meetings and we were able to visit reception to get some DVD’s to entertain the girls.

Breakfast was something we were all looking forward to and it certainly did not disappoint! It included a wonderful buffet of hot food, cereals, fruits, pastries and juices. Again, the staff were wonderful with our young children in this restaurant environment and as I arrived, I was pleased to see a wonderful mix of families and business people enjoying their breakfast without a hint of distaste for young children. I enjoyed seeing the staff interacting with all the children, smiling as they walked past, assisting them and adoring the little ones in high chairs (there were quite a few). I think Jasmine, our 7 year old, managed to complete about 5 courses for breakfast and would have gone back for more had I not stopped her! During our entire stay, whenever we walked past a staff member they smiled at us, the girls were often handed complimentary little chocolates (to their delight), and not once did I feel out of place in this top class hotel.

You might feel that as we were reviewing the Hotel that obviously they would be showing their best to us. The service we received was genuine. It was clear the staff knew how to interact with families, as well as any business person. I observed many other staff interacting with guests and the result was always as natural and intuitive as we received. A perfect example of this was while sitting at breakfast I

Centrepoint Tower, the hotel is right next door and that made it always easy to find!

Price The Kids Room Package - A classic style hotel room will fit two adults and two children with the kids side of the room set up with all the trimmings, toys, furniture and a DVD player. This package includes the delicious full buffet breakfast for all of you. This costs from $269 per night.Kids Room Special - You might like to have a separate room from the children, in this case, choose the interconnecting room which will be completely set up as a kids haven (that’s what we did). This package includes two interconnecting rooms and full buffet breakfast for two adults and two children from $439.

Don’t forget about the parking too, $25 per 24 hours or valet parking is also available for $55.

What you don’t know The Swissôtel Sydney donates $20 to the Sydney Children’s Hospital Foundation for every night booked in a Kids Room.

Facilities Unfortunately time didn’t permit us to make use of the facilities in the hotel however they looked AMAZING!! There is a fantastic outdoor heated pool, fitness studio, sauna and steam rooms or you might like to take advantage of the Amrita Spa and Wellness treatments!

Restaurant JPB Restaurant is located in the lobby with a fantastic menu available. There is also Crossroads Bar that serves drinks and a very impressive High Tea. I was also constantly tempted by the advertising of their chocolate fondue! 24 hour room service is available to the rooms which is great when you just want to relax. There is plenty of choice, only problem is they all offer fantastic service and delicious meals so it’s a very hard choice!

observed a guest checking out. The Concierge arrived behind the guest at the reception desk with the guests luggage and two boys riding the luggage trolley. This guest was not having to worry about where the children were while he was checking out, he wasn’t having to struggle with luggage and children and his boys had the brightest smiles on their faces as they enjoyed the ride.

The Swissôtel Sydney is not only a fantastic family friendly hotel, it is located perfectly for families also with so many activities on offer from the attractions on Darling Harbour to the hustle and bustle of the Sydney City Shopping Malls underneath the hotel. We took the kids to the Aquarium followed by a monorail ride back to the hotel and a walk through the shops. They loved every second and snapped lots of photos.

The prices for this amazing experience was also surprising, with many family options available that include the delicious breakfast.

I must admit, our favourite experience was the divine Pad Thai we ordered for room service with the chocolate covered strawberries to finish it off. We made sure we had that after the children had gone to sleep so we could savour the peace, and the strawberries all to ourselves! We have found a rare gem in the heart of the city, the Swissôtel Sydney is truly a hotel that exceeds expectations. They are a hotel that do more than advertise to families, but follow through on their promise with exceptional service and staff, and an overall exceptional experience. I cannot wait to return.

The FactsLocation 68 Market Street – in the heart of the city, short walking distance to Darling Harbour and only a block away from the monorail station. Shopping heaven is right at your door with an abundance of stores from Myer to the Lolly Shop! The State Theatre is across the road for some entertainment and there are plenty of restaurants and take aways within very close proximity. To make finding your way home easy when you go for a walk – always look for

…for all things pregnancy, baby and beyond!Planning Beautiful Children’s Parties

By Kate Bellomo

Planning a child’s birthday party is a fabulous opportunity to get creative and spend quality time with your child. Beautiful parties can be created on any budget and with a bit of creativity, imagination and effort you can create wonderful parties that will be enjoyed by all and remembered fondly for years to come. A simple checklist to help you create a fun and stress free celebration. Decide on your party location, prepare a guest list and set yourself a budget.

Will you have a theme? If choosing a theme pick something that is special to your child like their favourite character, animal or colour – the possibilities are endless! Once decided, start shopping around for your party supplies such as plates, cups, napkins and decorations and begin to plan your menu.

Traditional party games such as pass the parcel ? Or will you hire an entertainer for the day such as a magician or maybe a bouncy castle? For hired entertainment, always book well in advance to secure your date. If creating your own activities think about prizes and props needed to run your games.

Send your invitations 3 – 4 weeks in advance. It’s not always possible to invite the whole class but to avoid any tears or hurt feelings from those not invited try to mail your invitations or hand to the parents. Also always check if any of your guests have allergies so you can plan your party food accordingly.

Plan where you will set up your activities, food table and where the children will sit to eat on the day, allowing enough space for lots of excited little people. If you don’t have enough chairs for everyone opt for a blanket on the grass and have yourself a picnic set up.

Make sure you have other adults to help you out on the day with set up and supervision. Also have someone in charge

of the camera to capture all those important moments such as cake time.

Laying out a beautiful dessert table is a fun and impressive way to display all your party yummies! Choose a lovely tablecloth or piece of fabric that fits in with your party style to cover your table. Use jars or containers of varying heights to display lollies and other treats and use the same coloured dishes to display your party food. Take time to arrange your plates neatly on the table and add some finishing touches such as labels or pretty ribbons around your jars. Add decorations such as lanterns, pom poms, balloons or streamers to finish off your setting.

The birthday cake is always one of the party highlights, search cake books or the internet for ideas to make your own gorgeous birthday cake or find a local cake decorator to create one for you. Display you birthday cake on the dessert table so your efforts can be admired before its cut and gobbled up!

Party bags are a lovely way to say thank you to your guests for attending and for the gifts they have given your child. Check out discount stores or online party stores for cute party boxes and bags plus novelty items & lollies to use as

fillers. Also look into Ready Made Party Bag options to save you time. There is a great range of styles and themes available and with prices to suit all budgets. Add personalised tags to your party bags and have your little host or hostess hand out the bags to their friends as they leave.

After your party send out little thank you notes to your guests and for a personal touch add a photo of your child and their guests as a little keepsake.

Above all remember don’t stress, have fun and enjoy yourself. Don’t worry if every detail isn’t perfect. Your child will remember the special time they shared planning with you and the fabulous time they had with their family and friends on the day. As long as your child has a blast, that’s all that matters!

Twins?Triplets?...or more?

By Jennifer Gelven

The purpose of our online forum:

We are an Australian multiple birth online community forum for parents and parents-to-be with twins, triplets or a higher order of multiples. Multiplebirthparents.com is a fun place to meet other parents who share the same unique experiences in raising multiples If it is support or advice you are seeking or simply just want to chat to other parents we have a wonderful growing group of friendly and welcoming members with a wealth of knowledge in the day to day life of multiple parenting life.

Some background information:

Multiple Birth Parents was established on 31st December 2008 by Jennifer, a WA mum of 5 children including twin boys. Jennifer’s aim was to create a

safe and secure place where only parents or careers of multiples could turn to for assistance and support right through from pregnancy, birth and the highs and lows of parenting multiples.

How does the website and forum operate?

We are a non-profit organization run by members who are all mothers of multiples. Members can log-in and begin a new post on about almost anything about their multiples or join in on an existing post and share their experience, advice, happiness and frustrations knowing that no-one will pass judgement on them. Extra care has been taken behind the scenes to keep the site private to members only and certain measures must be met before full access to the forum is given. We also cater for socialising whether it be by meet ups arranged by members themselves through the website, MSN chats or playing various games on the website. …for all things pregnancy, baby and beyond!

“If you can’t feed 1,000 people, then feed one.” It was this quote by Mother Teresa that got Baby Teresa founders Sammie Appleyard and Kirsty Dunphey started on a year long planning and research adventure that would eventually lead to a clothing line for tiny ones that aims to help people clothe one baby in need for each baby they buy for.

Within a year of establishing Baby Teresa (www.baby-teresa.com) Sammie and Kirsty along with a wealth of support from friends, family and clients across the world have achieved the first part of their goal, to clothe children in need in more than 10 different countries across the world. From Australia to Uganda, Jordan, Egypt, Peru, the United States of America, France, Cambodia, The Philippines, Tanzania and Kenya. From rural and remote villages where people live in little more than tin sheds to victims of domestic violence in one of the world’s largest cities to a shelter that helps teenage mum’s many of whom have been the victims of rape to mother’s in need in the founder’s home towns – Baby Teresa has achieved it’s goal of donating one baby outfit for each one sold.

The response from the community has been overwhelming says founder Sammie Appleyard and we love seeing and reading about people’s reactions to the cause.

Bella Fountain has said: “It wasn’t until I had my own baby that I realized how unfair it is that not every baby in the world is as loved and well provided for as my own. With Baby Teresa I get the fun of shopping for my own child, and the knowledge that I’m helping another child as well. It’s a great feeling.”

Baby Teresa…A Great Cause

“I’ve spent the better part of the last 3 years over working with disadvantaged children, orphaned children and children that have been abandoned and I’ve seen how excited they get about something so simple as having something new to wear. It’s the small things that we really take for granted back home. So many children over here have never ever had a single new thing to wear - in orphanages, shelters and poor families it is always hand-me-downs and not enough. Children in the Western world are such an important, treasured part of our lives. It’s our culture to keep them

safe, loved and to be able to spoil them! Its great to be able to give people the opportunity to still partake in that mind set while being able to benefit a less fortunate child overseas at the same time.” Carrie Hesketh

There have been some unexpected joys in the first year as well with both founders currently expecting their first babies – an unplanned side effect of being surrounded by so much love for other babies perhaps.

Baby Teresa’s donated suits are distributed overseas through the Baby Teresa team and also through volunteers travelling abroad. Phil and Bec Beeston who recently travelled to the Philippines had this to say about their experience:

“We traveled to the Philippines hoping to make a difference in these people’s lives, but I’m sure that we walked away as the ones who had been changed the most!”

Baby Teresa founder Kirsty Dunphey has been fortunate to assist with donations in five countries and says of her experiences: “As an expectant Mum – I delight in the fact that we’ve been able to assist in a small way with so many babies overseas. Too often people lament about not being able to impact on the world at large. We’ve started small, one baby at a time and in doing so we’ve made it possible for everyone to start to have an impact even with something as small as a friend’s baby shower gift”.

Baby Teresa have the eventual goal of being able to clothe a baby in need in every country in the world. To find out more or get involved head to their website:www.baby-teresa.com where you can also purchase a Baby Teresa outfit for a baby you know (while donating another to a baby you don’t) starting at $29.95 AUD.

Talking Eczema

By Jo Harvey

Does it come as a surprise to you that today’s children have a higher incidence of eczema than previous generations? It has been found that eczema rates have tripled in recent years **

As a parent to a child who has mild eczema, and due to suffering from this condition myself throughout the years, I found myself asking not only “Why is this”, but also “how can we manage it in the most natural way”? When looking at our lifestyle these days and comparing it to those lived years ago, environmental factors may possibly play a big part. With an increase in soaps and detergents used, along with more frequent cleansing rituals, I believe that our precious little one’s skin is simply not able to cope as it once did. Water tends to dry out the skin and soaps and detergents effectively “degrease” it.

It is important to note that there are varying types of eczema, the most common being “atopic eczema” (also known as atopic dermatitis). When children suffer from atopic eczema it generally tends to start between 3 and 6 months of age, usually apparent as a red rash or dry skin appearing around the cheeks or mouth, back of legs and arms or in creases of skin.

“In people with eczema the skin barrier is less effective than in people who do not have eczema. In eczema there is a reduced production of fats and oils and the skin therefore has less water retaining properties. This means that skin with eczema does not provide the protection from the environment that normal skin does”.#

Dry skin patches and rash prone areas of skin may weep (as children will tend to scratch and worry at them due to the itch) and in turn become infected if left untreated. The good news is that infantile eczema such as this will usually disappear or become significantly reduced around the age of 3 or more years.

When my daughter Mia experienced mild/moderate eczema patches (on her shoulders of all places!) I initially thought that I would be able to control them with moisturiser alone as this has always worked for

condition as possible, ultimately, the eczema will be less apparent/itchy and the child will be happier. Usually, Organic Cotton is suggested as the kindest fabric to place against skin when eczema is prevalent, however when viewed under a microscope, bamboo (as a fibre) is extremely smooth and round, providing supreme comfort and far less irritation to the wearer. Due to its thermo regulation, bamboo also assists the body in maintaining a regular temperature (very important to those who suffer from eczema) resulting in less overheating and sweating. Babies’ trialling our bamboo products slept for longer periods and with greater comfort.

You can view the results of our eczema trials here http://www.babyjo.com.au/store/pc/Eczema-Trials-d12.htm and I welcome any queries about the results that you may have.I have found that through the use of bamboo, diligent moisturising, reduced bathing and with the aid of goats milk soap, Mia’s eczema has been well managed and rarely flares up.

me and my very dry skin. Her singlets (as all newborns and young ones tend to wear singlets under clothes) rubbed the skin red raw as the eczema was right under the hard seams, and I ended up with an unhappy child who had some fairly infected patches of discomfort. A trip to the Doctor’s confirmed that this was indeed eczema and was now infected skin. Antibiotics were prescribed to reduce the infection, and a cortisone cream provided for future use on

eczema affected areas. Once the patches were under control, I couldn’t seem to bring myself to use cortisone on her soft, precious skin – I am well educated on cortisone, and it just didn’t sit right with me at this point in time. At the same time, I was encouraging myself to start a business from home (so that I could spend more time with Mia, and still challenge myself on a personal level) – discovering bamboo was perfect timing and after trialling it on Mia’s dry skin, I was sold!

Heat rash, dry skin, eczema, sleepless nights. Bamboo helped with all of these and more however I did not think to document the results I was seeing at the time. Hindsight is marvelous, yet it is just that! Had I had photos and daily accounts, you would be amazed at the results achieved. Babyjo have since conducted non clinical trials on babies with eczema and these were documented so that others could see the results. Improved skin after only a day or two, comfort whilst being dressed, reduced inflammation and itchiness, happier and more contented babies – the list goes on.

It is important to note that I am not suggesting bamboo is a “miracle cure” for eczema; it is simply a great management tool for those who suffer from this frustrating condition. If the skin is kept in as best

I couldn’t seem to bring myself to use cortisone on her soft, precious skin...

Travel with Totstips...

With the Christmas holiday season creeping up on us again, Travel with Tots have put together some of our favourite tips to help your holiday with little ones go smoothly. We have listed some helpful hints for different types of travel but remember the number one tip no matter how you plan on getting to your destination is to relax and enjoy yourself.

Tips for all travellers;

Take your babies fitted cot sheet with you; not a clean one but one he /she has slept on for at least a night so it smells like them, their bed and home.

For toddlers you may like to take their pillow case, neither take up too much space in your luggage.

If possible before you travel get baby used to room temperature baby food, this makes life much easier if you don’t have access to microwaves etc.

Get babies and kids used to sleeping in a number of ways and places, will your baby sleep in your arms? Or on a bed? When travelling it is a huge advantage

to have adaptable kids that will sleep in any situation.Go shopping before you leave home, buy a couple of small new toys and keep them hidden; don’t bring them out until you are on the flight or in the car and the kids are getting frustrated and really bored, for older kids you may like to wrap them to increase the excitement.

Hints for flying with tiny travellers

Change your baby right before boarding; it is much easier to change a nappy at the airport than it is in the plane toilets so give yourself the maximum amount of time between in-flight nappy changes.

Clean out the pockets and underneath basket of your stroller before going to the airport, it is easier to do at home than at security checks when juggling kids, luggage, shoes and hurrying.

Get to your gate early; generally parents travelling with kids are allowed to board first to give you time to get organised in your seats.

Make friends with other parents and kids while you are waiting to board your flight, then you can visit them later in the flight.

Take plenty of snacks; children’s appetites may vary to the timing of the dinner cart plus, snacking fills in some time.

winning tip!winner of the Mums Bubs and Gifts prize pack

If your child has only recently been potty trained, you may want to consider putting them in pull ups or a nappy for the flight in case turbulence or delays stop them from being able to leave their seat.

During your flight; Stay calm even if your child cries, don’t worry about what other passengers think, you are doing your best!!

Breast or bottle feed on take-off and landing, or offer a dummy if your baby uses one; this will help them deal with the changes in cabin pressure. Older children can be given a chewy sweet or a lollipop to help pop their ears. Make sure you take age appropriate Paracetamol on-board with you in case of ear aches or other pain.

If you need cabin crew to heat bottles for you, ask them in advance of when you need it, they are often busy with catering duties etc. so may take a while to get the bottle ready, so don’t wait until you have a screaming hungry baby to ask.

Making the most of long car trips with kids

In the car make sure a bag of essentials is easily reachable with extra nappies, wipes, a change of clothes, a face cloth, paracetamol, spare dummies and a couple of plastic bags in case of wet or messy accidents.

Where possible, pack the car so that one parent can move to the back seat to keep an unhappy baby company if required.

Stop frequently to give the whole family a break, pack a picnic or stop at playgrounds and let the kids stretch their legs.

Pack food for yourself so that if the kids are happily sleeping at meal times, you can keep driving until babies or kids are awake and sick of the car.

If your baby doesn’t like to be in the car in the dark, try switching on the overhead reading light or if that is too distracting for the driver, bring a battery operated night light and put it in the back seat with bub.

If you are travelling on your own with a baby it is a good idea to turn off the child locks in the backseat, (we know of a mummy that got in the back seat to breastfeed bub and then had a LOT of trouble getting out after realising the child locks had her trapped in the back seat).

Pack your travel necessities at the top of the boot so you can get at them for each overnight stop without having to unpack the whole boot, things like; babies travel cot, blankets and kids pj’s, perhaps even pack a special bag for the trip with enough clothes for the family for the duration of the trip to avoid having to take big pieces of luggage in and out of the car.

For expecting mummies

Pack Antacid tablets!

Wear breathable fabrics in hot climates and comfy loose fitting clothes on the plane

Wear loose fitting shoes on the flight or you may not be able to get them back on again

Drink lots of water when flying and pack snacks in case you are hungry.

When flying, ask for an aisle seat so you can get up and down regularly to stretch your legs and let’s face it; visit the loo. On long car trips stop and break up the journey whenever you feel you need to stretch out and bring pillows to pack around yourself to help get comfy.

Always check that your travel insurance covers pregnancy related issues.
