Page 2: Mumbles Community Council newsletter Summer 2016

Welcome to ourSummer 2016Newsletter, and wesincerely hope thesun will shine on usall, and lift ourspirits after a long, dark, wet winter.

On the 10th May I was re-elected as Chairmanof Mumbles Community Council (MCC) for the4th year, and I wish to thank the councillorswho have shown confidence in electing me asChairman.Councillor Brian Arthur continues as ViceChairman.

Since the last Newsletter, MCC has held andbeen involved in many events including theTea Party, on 20th April, at Ostreme Hall. On21st April, MCC lit the beacon on OystermouthCastle as part of the National Chain, tocelebrate the 90th birthday of Her Majesty,Queen Elizabeth 11.

An enjoyable weekend, 7th & 8th May, wasspent at Underhill Park, when the Alan MartinFootball Tournament took place.'Maytime in Mumbles' is a new MCC ventureand is planned to be repeated next year.

We now look forward to participating in a'Cricket Day' at Mumbles Cricket Club andorganising a 2nd 'It's a Knockout'.

Once again, I thank you all for your continuedsupport.

Councillor Helen Mitchell Chairman, Mumbles Community Council.

Memories of Mumbles Navy DaysNewfound Friends was formed 27 years agoin 1989, with the objective of using the skillsof the Newfoundland Dog to raise money forchildrens' charities. The group has gone from strength tostrength and we are now a registered charity. The newfoundland dogs of Newfound Friendsperform displays at maritime events invarious parts of the UK as well as numerous“sponsored rescue” fundraising days forvarious charities. See our website for the fullstory www.newfoundfriends.co.ukSome years ago we were approached by CllrTony Colburn asking if we would be interestedin doing one of our lifesaving demonstrationsas part of the Mumbles Navy Days Festival. We had already made an appearance atSwansea Sea Shanty Festival and knew what alovely area this was, so we didn’t hesitate inaccepting this invitation. This was just thebeginning of several years when the eventbecame the starting point of our summerprogramme. On arrival we were always greeted by Tonywho took great care to ensure that

everything was in place for us and we had allthat we needed. The demonstration tookplace in the sea which gave us a goodopportunity to show off the skills of our dogsto the full, as a change from working in stillwater. We were very sorry when our visits came toan end in 2012 but will always have happymemories of Navy Days. Jean Pugh.

The loss of a Newfound FriendOne of the group of Newfound Friends whoregularly visited Mumbles was Whizz, whosadly passed away in March, aged twelve, receiving the accolade of being ‘The world’sbest life-dog’. His award for outstandingdedication to duty, the PDSA Order of Merit, the Animals’ OBE, was accepted on his behalfby Tizz, accompanied by his owner, DavidPugh, who stated, ‘‘He was a dog in a millionand I am truly heartbroken that he is not hereto receive the medal.’’ All who met and knewWhizz are saddened by his loss, but delightedby the well-deserved recognition he hasposthumously received. Whizz being only thethird canine to receive this honour.

MUMBLES DEVELOPMENTUPDATES

MUMBLES DEVELOPMENTUPDATES

As Mumbles moves into a new andpositive chapter of regenerationand changes over the next fewyears, we will see an increase indevelopments. If present and future developments are a bench

mark to go by, it will make a big difference.

The Tivoli - Retail, restaurants and cafes dueto be finished and populated with incomingbusinesses.

The Conservative Club building - Convertinginto Flats.

Tesco - Now open for business and provingpopular already and has joined the local TradersAssociation to improve Mumbles as a shoppingand tourist destination.

Antelope Pub - Work starting again soon andthe planned completion is Easter 2017.

British Legion site, Newton Road - Pre-planning application has been submitted

to C&CS for a Marks & Spencer Food Hall andapartments with subterranean parking.

Mumbles Pier - Work is anticipated to start atthe end of Summer 2016.

Oystermouth Square - Under new ownershipand we await information as to proposeddevelopment.

Not all change is bad. MCC is here to facilitateyour opinions on how Mumbles is changing. We will listen to what you say. We are here torepresent you. Your needs and feelings, asresidents, will be taken into account..

If you see anything that needs to beaddressed, please let us know by contactingthe Clerk at Mumbles Community Council, either by telephone on 01792 363598 or by email :[email protected] or call into theoffice in Walters Crescent on Mondays,Wednesday and Fridays, 9.30am to 12.30pm.

Following our last Newsletter, theBBQ Bins have now beeninstalled at Rotherslade, Caswelland Langland beaches in thehope that barbecues will not beleft or discarded on our beautifulbeaches. Appropriate signs havealso been placed at these sites.

Highways are dealing with a number of

projects around the MCC area, including

erecting 'reflectors' on the railings at the

bottom of Fairwood Road, West Cross, with

the view of reducing the number of recent

'incidents' which have happened on this

roundabout.

MCC Highways strive to make our area a safer

place for both pedestrians and motorists

alike. Unfortunately, we are no further

forward in reaching an agreement over the

parking alongside St. Peter's Church, Newton,

but hopefully 'higher level' negotiations may

take place in the near future.

MCC Highways also deal with the overall

appearance of the 4 Wards by liaising with

City and County of Swansea to enter Wales in

Bloom, and the installation of the Christmas

lighting scheme. At the time of going to print,

we should report that some difficulty is being

experienced regarding the planting of a 'living

tree' in Newton. With the help of C&CS, it is

hoped to overcome the problem. An update

will be included in the next Newsletter.

MAYTIMEIN MUMBLES

MAYTIMEIN MUMBLES

MAYTIME IN MUMBLESThe early morning clouds rolled away and thecrowds rolled in for Mumbles CommunityCouncil's Maytime in Mumbles picnic themedevent in the grounds of Oystermouth Castle.

Families laid rugs on the grass or used thepatio tables and chairs provided. Sunparasols were provided for protection againstsun or rain!

Children played happily within the safeenvirons of the Castle Field, under thewatchful eyes of their parents. They climbedup the hill and rolled down; they blew "prettybubbles on the air;" they explored the CastleField; they played football; they visited thebirds, tawny owl, falcon and Harris and

red-tailed hawk; they became archers for alittle while, as they bent the bow and aimedtheir arrows at the target. It was a joy to seeso many children enjoying themselves in the afternoon sunshine.

Young children enjoyed rides on the chair-o-plane roundabout.

The accordion Orchestra delighted areceptive audience, whilst Mike's Donkeyswere busy throughout the afternoon givingrides to excited children.

A big thank you to the families who attendedwho carefully disposed of litter in the binsprovided. A special thank you to Jacob Stonewho was on site from 8.30am until 6.30pm.An ever willing, much appreciated helper.

that our area will be bedecked with colours

will have the same response as last year.

The lights on the tree in SouthendGardens, which failed in 2015 dueto age, growth of tree and 'slugattack', are being replaced withwhite lights in readiness for, hopefully, this summer, butdefinitely by Christmas. The 3 established sites, Blackpill, West Cross

and Oystermouth will again be provided with

Christmas trees, but there is, unfortunately,

some doubt at this moment in time whether a

'living tree' can be provided for

Picket Mead, Newton, as it

appears that the planting

season is almost at an end.

However, we have not ruled out providing a

'cut tree' for this Christmas pending

obtaining permission from the landowners

and C&CS. We shall update you in our next

Newsletter.

We hope that the Christmas tree in

Oystermouth will not be subjected to

vandalism as per last Christmas.

The Oystermouth 'Switch On' is due to take

place on Thursday, 24th November 2016.

RENOVATION WORK AT CASWELLPROMENADE (MAY - JULY 2016)

Following recent high tides and strong winds,a significant amount of sand and pebbles wasdeposited above the mean high water mark, blocking the outlet directly below thepromenade. Heavy rain caused water to backup in the pipework system and the resultingpressure caused the inspection chambers tolift, causing significant damage toapproximately 300m2 of the paving work onthe promenade. This is the third time thepromenade has been damaged and closed offfor similar reasons.

The damaged area has now been cordonedoff as it is currently unsafe.

However the Council haveidentified a series of short-term,temporary measures to enablethe affected area of thepromenade to be opened againas soon as is practicable:

• A contractor has completed some remedialwork at the site such as clearing debrisfrom the pipework system

• Bins and benches have been removed fromthe fenced-off area and replaced into theiroriginal positions once the surface hasbeen replaced permanently or temporarily.

• Temporary fencing and coloured ‘scrim’ hasbeen placed around the affected areawhilst the work is being conducted.

• A more permanent solution in the form of afilter mechanism will be fitted to the pipeleading to the sea. This will prevent stonesbeing washed in, which could lead tofurther blockages and increased pressure.

• The damaged drains covers will be replacedand a temporary tarmac surface laidaround them.

This work is expected to be completed in timefor the school Summer holidays.

As these are only temporary measures, along-term, permanent solution to the problemwill be investigated over the next 12 months.Caswell Promenade is an importantdestination for residents and visitors alike andas such, stakeholders will be kept informed ofthe proposed short and long-term solutionsand kept appraised of progress.
