Tel: 022-22844519. L.S. HERDENIA BHOPAL: Madhya Pradesh faced a strange situation when both the ruling party and main opposition party took to streets to protest against each other. While Congress protested against the Central government for the delay in giving special grant to meet the extra ex- penditure for giving com- pensation to the people and particularly to Kisans for the huge loss due to heavy rains and floods. At the same time BJP held demon- stration to protest against the Kamal Nath government for its failure to give relief to Kisans. In a bid to counter the BJP’s Kisan Aakrosh An- dolan, the Congress on Mon- day held state-wide demon- strations in every district against the Modi govern- ment for not releasing funds for flood relief works. The demonstration in the state capital was headed by for- mer Union minister Suresh Pachauri, State Mahila Con- gress President Mandvi Chouhan and district Con- gress president Kailash Mishra.Congress leaders and workers gathered at the Roshanpura Square, held a protest meeting for nearly two hours. Later, the party leaders marched towards Raj Bhavan to submit a memorandum to governor Lalji Tandon. The memo- randum was addressed to President Ramnath Kovind seeking his intervention for getting the fund released by the Union government for flood relief work. However, the march was stopped by police near the Raj Bhavan where party workers raised anti-BJP slogans and jostled with men-in-uniform. Con- gress leaders were informed that Lalji Tandon is not in town. Hence, a delegation of Congress leaders, including Suresh Pachauri, walked to the governor’s office and submitted the memoran- dum. Speaking to media state congress spokesman Ravi Saxena said, “There has been incessant rains and floods causing unprecedent- ed devastation in Madhya Pradesh. The BJP led Union government is discriminat- ing against the state and not releasing even a single pen- ny for flood relief work here. Chief minister Kama Nath handed over the state’s memorandum on floods to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union home min- ister Amit Shah. The central survey team has visited the state twice but to no avail”. Congress leaders claimed that while the Centre has re- leased aid packages to Bihar and Karnataka, It has not re- leased any fund for Madhya Pradesh which has 28 BJP Lok Sabha MPs out of a total 29. BJP on its part launched a “Kisan Akrosh Andolan’ across MP against the al- leged failure of the Con- gress-led Kamal Nath gov- ernment to give relief to farmers affected by heavy rains and delay in loan waive scheme. BJP workers across the state also burnt ‘inflated’ power bills as a mark of protest. BJP state president Rakesh Singh spearheaded the protest in Narsinghpur while former chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan led the agitation in Rewa. LoP Gopal Bhargava took charge in Bhopal. BJP workers also clashed with police for vio- lating prohibitory orders under Section 144 in Ja- balpur, Gwalior and Bhopal. Prohibitory order is in force in the state owing to a Union government alert in wake of impeding Ayodhya case judgment by SC. “The Congress govern- ment has lost faith of farm- ers and poor. If the assembly elections are held today, Congress will face the same fate as it had suffered during Lok Sabha elections in May 2019. If Congress could get even 30 of the 230 seats in the assembly elections, I will quit politics” claimed Bhar- gava while talking to re- porters. Before the protest in Rewa, former chief minister Shiv- raj Singh Chouhan met the kin of a farmer Vanspati Sahu, who committed sui- cide recently allegedly due to debt, in Patna village. “Congress made false prom- ises of loan waiver which were not fulfilled. Our farm- ers are forced to commit sui- cides. They are being served recovery notices by the banks. If farm debts are not withdrawn, we will not al- low the Nath government to continue” said Chouhan. It may be recalled that the Madhya Pradesh chief min- ister Kamal Nath has al- ready announced to stage a day-long protest fast, along with his ministerial col- leagues, at Delhi, it would add a new chapter to the his- tory of confrontation be- tween the Central and the state governments. The decision to mount the protest in the national capi- tal has been taken because of the delay in sanction of Central aid for alleviating the miseries of the people, particularly the farmers, born out of the torrential rains and floods in many parts of the state. The state government has alleged that the Centre was deliberately delaying the grant of aid. Nath and all the other min- isters will sit on a hunger strike for a day in New Delhi to protest against the Cen- tre’s ‘discrimination” against Madhya Pradesh in granting funds for flood re- lief. The state government says that the Narendra Modi Government has released funds for Bihar and Kar- nataka but not Madhya Pradesh. “The Centre is dis- criminating against Mad- hya Pradesh and its 7.5 crore people. More than 55 lakh farmers have been affected by the heavy rains and floods and standing crops on 60 lakh hectares of land have been destroyed,” min- ister for law and state gov- ernment spokesperson PC Sharma said. According to Sharma, “Chief Minister Kamal Nath visited New Delhi twice and personally hand- ed over details of the devas- tation caused by the floods to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home minister Amit Shah. The Centre has since released funds for flood relief to Karnataka and Bihar but it is delaying financial aid to the people of Madhya Pradesh.” (IPA Service) BJP GEAR UP THEIR CAMPAIGN AGAINST KAMAL NATH P. SREEKUMARAN THURUVANANTHAPURAM: A flaming controversy has erupted over the arrest of two CPI(M) workers in Kozhikode district for their alleged Maoist links. Parties cutting across political affiliations have unreservedly condemned the police ac- tion in slapping the dreaded Unlawful Ac- tivities Prevention Act (UAPA), passed re- cently by Parliament, on the workers. The Opposition parties have, gleefully, grabbed the chance to grill the CPI(M)-led Left Democratic Front(LDF) Government for invoking the provisions of a black act the latter has strongly opposed both in Parlia- ment and outside. It is not as if the opposition parties alone have taken strong exception to what they have termed ‘State-sponsored terrorism’. The second most important ally of the CPI(M) in the LDF, the CPI has also strongly opposed the police action. Black laws like the UAPA have no place in a civilised socie- ty and in a country like India which is a con- stitutional democracy. That is the stand of the CPI which has demanded that the Gov- ernment make quick amends for the serious lapse on the part of the police. Significantly, many senior leaders of the CPI(M) itself have come down heavily on the police, which they feel has become a law unto themselves. Among them are Politburo member M A Baby and LDF convener A Vi- jayaraghavan and Ministers like Thomas Isaac. As if this is not enough, the CPI(MP) State Secretariat has registered its protest against the police excesses. The Kozhikode South Area Committee of the CPI(M) went to the extent of passing a resolution con- demning the police action. On the other hand, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, initially, defended the po- lice action. But, confronted with the mount- ing pressure from within the CPI(MP) itself, he has also frowned upon the police procliv- ity to misuse the UAPA. The police, on its part, continues to justify the slapping of UAPA on the arrested CPI(M) workers. The police claims to be in possession of ‘clear evidence’ of the Maoist connections of the duo. In support of their contention, police say that they recovered Maoist leaflets and books from them. Be- sides, one of the arrested CPI(M) worker raised Maoist slogans when the police raid- ed his house, claims the Police. The parents of the CPI(M) worker Taha, have, however, disputed the police claim. They contend that nothing was recovered from the house except a mobile phone which belongs to his brother. The Maoist leaflets were brought by the police themselves to falsely implicate Taha in the case. Moreover, he raised pro-Maoist slogans when he was forced to do so by the police, the mother of Taha averred. Political parties contend that the police have resorted to the blatant mis- use of UAPA to deflect attention from the ac- tion of the special squad named Thunder- bolt which gunned down four Maoists in At- tappadi forest in Palakkad district a few days back. The CPI had debunked the Thun- derbolt’s claim that it shot them down after the Maoists started firing at them. The CPI leaders rejected the contention and said the Maoists were killed in a fake encounter. The Opposition parties have also identified themselves with the sentiments voiced by the CPI. The Police had come under pressure in a case involving the killing of two girls in Valayar which had inflamed the entire state. The Police deliberately sabotaged the case, to save the culprits who they alleged, be- longed to the ruling party. It was to divert the attention of the people from these two cases that the police invoked the UAPA against the two CPI(M) workers. That is the public per- ception. (IPA Service) MASSIVE ROW ERUPTS OVER ARREST OF CPI-M WORKERS FOR ‘MAOIST LINKS’ AGENCIES COPENHAGEN The Danish government plans to explore the possi- bility of regulating social media companies and mak- ing them more directly ac- countable for the content they carry, said Minister of Justice Nick Hekkerup in a written reply to parlia- ment's Committee on Jus- tice on Tuesday. "The issue of social me- dia's responsibility for the content is a complex issue and there is a need for us to consider whether the tools that exist today are work- ing properly," said the min- ister, reports Xinhua news agency. Several parties from the so-called "red bloc" supporting the ruling So- cial Democrats in parlia- ment, already announced in October that they were ready to legislate on social media sites, such as Face- book, Instagram or YouTube, to make them di- rectly responsible for re- moving illegal content. "We have reached the point where we have to recognize that social media has a responsibility. Danish govt plans to regulate social media

BHOPAL: Madhya Pradeshfaced a strange situationwhen both the ruling partyand main opposition partytook to streets to protestagainst each other. WhileCongress protested againstthe Central government forthe delay in giving specialgrant to meet the extra ex-penditure for giving com-pensation to the people andparticularly to Kisans forthe huge loss due to heavyrains and floods. At thesame time BJP held demon-stration to protest againstthe Kamal Nath governmentfor its failure to give relief toKisans.

In a bid to counter theBJP’s Kisan Aakrosh An-dolan, the Congress on Mon-day held state-wide demon-strations in every districtagainst the Modi govern-ment for not releasing fundsfor flood relief works. Thedemonstration in the statecapital was headed by for-mer Union minister SureshPachauri, State Mahila Con-gress President MandviChouhan and district Con-gress president KailashMishra.Congress leadersand workers gathered at theRoshanpura Square, held aprotest meeting for nearlytwo hours. Later, the partyleaders marched towardsRaj Bhavan to submit amemorandum to governorLalji Tandon. The memo-randum was addressed toPresident Ramnath Kovindseeking his intervention forgetting the fund released bythe Union government forflood relief work. However, the march was stopped bypolice near the Raj Bhavanwhere party workers raisedanti-BJP slogans and jostledwith men-in-uniform. Con-gress leaders were informedthat Lalji Tandon is not intown. Hence, a delegation ofCongress leaders, includingSuresh Pachauri, walked tothe governor’s office andsubmitted the memoran-dum.

Speaking to media statecongress spokesman RaviSaxena said, “There hasbeen incessant rains andfloods causing unprecedent-ed devastation in MadhyaPradesh. The BJP led Union

government is discriminat-ing against the state and notreleasing even a single pen-ny for flood relief work here.Chief minister Kama Nathhanded over the state’smemorandum on floods toPrime Minister NarendraModi and Union home min-ister Amit Shah. The centralsurvey team has visited thestate twice but to no avail”.

Congress leaders claimedthat while the Centre has re-leased aid packages to Biharand Karnataka, It has not re-leased any fund for MadhyaPradesh which has 28 BJPLok Sabha MPs out of a total29.

BJP on its part launched a“Kisan Akrosh Andolan’across MP against the al-leged failure of the Con-gress-led Kamal Nath gov-ernment to give relief tofarmers affected by heavyrains and delay in loanwaive scheme. BJP workersacross the state also burnt‘inflated’ power bills as amark of protest.

BJP state presidentRakesh Singh spearheadedthe protest in Narsinghpurwhile former chief ministerShivraj Singh Chouhan ledthe agitation in Rewa. LoPGopal Bhargava took chargein Bhopal. BJP workers alsoclashed with police for vio-lating prohibitory ordersunder Section 144 in Ja-balpur, Gwalior and Bhopal.Prohibitory order is in forcein the state owing to a Uniongovernment alert in wake ofimpeding Ayodhya casejudgment by SC.

“The Congress govern-ment has lost faith of farm-ers and poor. If the assemblyelections are held today,Congress will face the samefate as it had suffered duringLok Sabha elections in May2019. If Congress could geteven 30 of the 230 seats inthe assembly elections, I willquit politics” claimed Bhar-gava while talking to re-porters.

Before the protest in Rewa, former chief minister Shiv-raj Singh Chouhan met thekin of a farmer VanspatiSahu, who committed sui-cide recently allegedly dueto debt, in Patna village.“Congress made false prom-ises of loan waiver whichwere not fulfilled. Our farm-

ers are forced to commit sui-cides. They are being servedrecovery notices by thebanks. If farm debts are notwithdrawn, we will not al-low the Nath government tocontinue” said Chouhan.

It may be recalled that theMadhya Pradesh chief min-ister Kamal Nath has al-ready announced to stage aday-long protest fast, alongwith his ministerial col-leagues, at Delhi, it wouldadd a new chapter to the his-tory of confrontation be-tween the Central and thestate governments.

The decision to mount theprotest in the national capi-tal has been taken becauseof the delay in sanction ofCentral aid for alleviatingthe miseries of the people, particularly the farmers, born out of the torrentialrains and floods in manyparts of the state. The stategovernment has alleged thatthe Centre was deliberatelydelaying the grant of aid.

Nath and all the other min-isters will sit on a hungerstrike for a day in New Delhito protest against the Cen-tre’s ‘discrimination”against Madhya Pradesh ingranting funds for flood re-lief.

The state government saysthat the Narendra ModiGovernment has releasedfunds for Bihar and Kar-nataka but not MadhyaPradesh. “The Centre is dis-criminating against Mad-hya Pradesh and its 7.5 crorepeople. More than 55 lakhfarmers have been affectedby the heavy rains andfloods and standing crops on60 lakh hectares of landhave been destroyed,” min-ister for law and state gov-ernment spokesperson PCSharma said.

According to Sharma,“Chief Minister KamalNath visited New Delhitwice and personally hand-ed over details of the devas-tation caused by the floodsto Prime Minister NarendraModi and Home ministerAmit Shah. The Centre hassince released funds forflood relief to Karnatakaand Bihar but it is delayingfinancial aid to the people ofMadhya Pradesh.”

BJP GEAR UP THEIR CAMPAIGNAGAINST KAMAL NATH

P. SREEKUMARAN

THURUVANANTHAPURAM: A flamingcontroversy has erupted over the arrest oftwo CPI(M) workers in Kozhikode districtfor their alleged Maoist links.

Parties cutting across political affiliationshave unreservedly condemned the police ac-tion in slapping the dreaded Unlawful Ac-tivities Prevention Act (UAPA), passed re-cently by Parliament, on the workers.

The Opposition parties have, gleefully, grabbed the chance to grill the CPI(M)-ledLeft Democratic Front(LDF) Governmentfor invoking the provisions of a black act thelatter has strongly opposed both in Parlia-ment and outside.

It is not as if the opposition parties alonehave taken strong exception to what theyhave termed ‘State-sponsored terrorism’.The second most important ally of theCPI(M) in the LDF, the CPI has also stronglyopposed the police action. Black laws likethe UAPA have no place in a civilised socie-ty and in a country like India which is a con-stitutional democracy. That is the stand ofthe CPI which has demanded that the Gov-ernment make quick amends for the seriouslapse on the part of the police.

Significantly, many senior leaders of theCPI(M) itself have come down heavily on thepolice, which they feel has become a lawunto themselves. Among them are Politburomember M A Baby and LDF convener A Vi-jayaraghavan and Ministers like ThomasIsaac. As if this is not enough, the CPI(MP)State Secretariat has registered its protestagainst the police excesses. The KozhikodeSouth Area Committee of the CPI(M) wentto the extent of passing a resolution con-demning the police action.

On the other hand, Chief MinisterPinarayi Vijayan, initially, defended the po-lice action. But, confronted with the mount-ing pressure from within the CPI(MP) itself,

he has also frowned upon the police procliv-ity to misuse the UAPA.

The police, on its part, continues to justifythe slapping of UAPA on the arrestedCPI(M) workers. The police claims to be inpossession of ‘clear evidence’ of the Maoistconnections of the duo. In support of theircontention, police say that they recoveredMaoist leaflets and books from them. Be-sides, one of the arrested CPI(M) workerraised Maoist slogans when the police raid-ed his house, claims the Police.

The parents of the CPI(M) worker Taha, have, however, disputed the police claim. They contend that nothing was recoveredfrom the house except a mobile phone whichbelongs to his brother. The Maoist leafletswere brought by the police themselves tofalsely implicate Taha in the case. Moreover,he raised pro-Maoist slogans when he wasforced to do so by the police, the mother ofTaha averred. Political parties contend thatthe police have resorted to the blatant mis-use of UAPA to deflect attention from the ac-tion of the special squad named Thunder-bolt which gunned down four Maoists in At-tappadi forest in Palakkad district a fewdays back. The CPI had debunked the Thun-derbolt’s claim that it shot them down afterthe Maoists started firing at them. The CPIleaders rejected the contention and said theMaoists were killed in a fake encounter. TheOpposition parties have also identifiedthemselves with the sentiments voiced bythe CPI.

The Police had come under pressure in acase involving the killing of two girls inValayar which had inflamed the entire state. The Police deliberately sabotaged the case,to save the culprits who they alleged, be-longed to the ruling party. It was to divert theattention of the people from these two casesthat the police invoked the UAPA against thetwo CPI(M) workers. That is the public per-ception. (IPA Service)

MASSIVE ROW ERUPTS OVER ARREST OFCPI-M WORKERS FOR ‘MAOIST LINKS’

AGENCIESCOPENHAGEN

The Danish governmentplans to explore the possi-bility of regulating socialmedia companies and mak-ing them more directly ac-countable for the contentthey carry, said Minister ofJustice Nick Hekkerup in awritten reply to parlia-ment's Committee on Jus-tice on Tuesday.

"The issue of social me-dia's responsibility for thecontent is a complex issueand there is a need for us toconsider whether the tools

that exist today are work-ing properly," said the min-ister, reports Xinhua newsagency. Several partiesfrom the so-called "red bloc"supporting the ruling So-cial Democrats in parlia-ment, already announcedin October that they wereready to legislate on socialmedia sites, such as Face-book, Instagram orYouTube, to make them di-rectly responsible for re-moving illegal content."We have reached the pointwhere we have to recognizethat social media has a responsibility.
