Mumbai School of Economics and Public Policy is the fresh face of an institute which derives its strong foundation from the 90 year history of the Department of Economics, University of Mumbai. It is not just the nomenclature that claims novelty but also the perspective with which the institute looks at the study of Economics and it's allied fields. Although a traditional stream of Social Science, Economics in the present day has important teachings to render. More so in the sphere of Policy Making and Analytics. With aim to cater to the intricate challenges of Policy making, MSE-PP has brought about structural and functional improvements in the design of the MA Economics programme. Furthermore, responding to the growing requirement of the industry for professionals in the stream of Analytics and Data Science, the institute has a profile of Professors and Visiting Professors who conduct courses relevant to this field.MSE-PP looks forward to building a niche for its students in the arena of industry, policy and academics. Devoted to building a brigade of ideas equipped with techniques, the institute intends to leave no leaf unturned to provide for an conducive environment to the students and faculty in their pursuit for excellence.

I am happy to present to the 2016-1 batch of MSEPP. The MSEPP is an 8academic institution cum think-tank. One of the oldest departments of University of Mumbai, Department of Economics (Autonomous), has now been transformed into a Teaching cum Policy Research Think-Tank with substantial engagements with real world policy issues.Apart from receiving a rigorous training in various branches of Economics, our students are also engaging with the world of Applied Economics and Policy making. They have interned with various Private Organisations as well as various Departments of the Central and State Governments. This gives them a first-hand experience and understanding of how their academic understanding and the real world interact. They are therefore rare commodity to an employer. I wish them the very best!.

THE INSTITUTE
5
Mumbai School of Economics and Public Policy erstwhile known as Department of Economics, was founded in 1921 with appointment of Mr. C.N Vakil as Assistant Professor and since then it has been making significant contributions to Academics and Policy making at local and national level. However, the legacy of MSE-PP had its genesis to all way back to 1917.The Senate of the then University of Bombay showed great vision and focus towards nation building. Since then this department has produced several outstanding scholars and policy makers such as Prof.C.N Vakil, M.L.Dantwala, D.T.Lakdawala, P.R. Brahmananda, Kanta Ranadive, T.S. Papola, P.R. Panchamukhi, V.R. Panchamukhi, Ranganath Bhardwaj, J.C. Sandesara, L.K. Deshpande, D.M. Nachane, M.J.M. Rao, Professor V.K.R.V. Rao , Dr. Bimal. Jalan and Lord Meghnad Desai.
The alumni of the School are consultants to international bodies like the IMF, the World Bank, UNDP, UNW, ILO, and government bodies like the Planning Commission, the Reserve Bank of India, as well as to various state governments and local bodies. The private sector too has benefited immensely from the pool of expertise in the Department. In addition, the faculty publishes widely in reputed national and international journals and have made seminal contributions in their respective fields. A significant portion of academic activity is channelled through various units in the Department. These include –the RBI in Monetary Economics and Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Chair in Political Economy, the Dr.Vibhuti Shukla Unit in Urban Economics and Regional Development, Walchand Hirachand Unit in Transport Economics, and Dr. D.T. Lakdawala Chair in Planning and Development.
Due to its academic credentials, the MSE-PP has been recognized as a Centre for Advanced Studies in Economics by the University Grants Commission since 1963. A Centre for Women's Studies is also functional in the Department. The Department has been granted an Autonomous status which is a further recognition of its stellar role on the Indian academic map. The Department does not believe in resting on its laurels. Regular atempts are made to make qualitative improvements in teaching and research standards. Since 2007, a M.A. programme with a choice-based credit system has been instituted. In addition, MSE-PP has a thriving Ph.D. programme. The facilities available include a well-appointed computer laboratory where students are imparted hands-on training in the latest software; work stations; well-designed conference rooms, as well as a stimulating departmental library.
th As a milestone carved in the history of University Of Mumbai in its 160 Anniversary year was the transformative initiative to expand the nature and scope of Economics Department in order to meet the multifarious and multi disciplinary challenges that the contemporary economy faces. This led to renaming of the department as Mumbai School of Economics and Public Policy. The School will run rigorous inter-disciplinary and subject specific undergraduate, postgraduate, doctoral and post doctoral courses in field of Economics, Public Policy, Quantitative Finance and Data Science. It would act as premium Think Tank-cum training and research institution in economics and public policy that would harness theoretical and empirical research and assist public and private organisations and devise growth oriented and socially inclusive policies.

M.A. Economics is the flagship programme of MSE-PP which offers innovative courses that add to the students' comprehensive understanding of Economics. We have a Credit Based Programme spanning 2 years, across 4 semesters. Students coming from diverse backgrounds are initially trained in the core courses for the first two semesters, acquainting them with the theoretical fundamentals of economics. In the second year of the programme, the students choose the courses they wish to pursue, from a host of specialised and application based electives. Beginning from the Batch of 2016-18, a Dissertation component has been added to the course in lieu of the erstwhile Indian Economy course, where each student is to pursue research under the respective Faculty assigned. Credits will be awarded to students on successful completion and presentation of the the Dissertation. Further the students will be assessed through an examination, on their study of the Economic Survey of India.
The course is designed to propel students to develop insights not only in Economics but also in allied fields like Public Policy, Finance and Statistics. The Dissertation component allows students to explore novel areas of research with special relevance to the industries and issues in the Indian Economy, which opportunes application of skills and techniques learnt over the span of the course. MSE-PP is a standalone institute that offers courses in Urban Economics and Economics of Services as specialized electives. MSE-PP has ensured that the program remains relevant, and is able to meet the changing needs of the industry, business organizations and of the research arena.

“An MA student at MSE-PP is well equipped with knowledge of the current issues in the economic policy framework and in addition has strong theoretical knowledge with quantitative techniques.”
Executive Editor, MINT
"A good understanding of economic issues as well as empirical abilities is necessary in the contemporary business world. Every business needs to understand demand growth, inflation, the global economy, interest rates and the value of the rupee. A trained economist - either as a business manager or an economic analyst - can help a modern business negotiate the terrain of uncertainty."
Professor – Economics,
The new course-contents developed and adopted by the MSEPP reflect an optimal combination of rigour and relevance. The students completing Post-Graduation at MSEPP will have sound conceptual understanding and they will be simultaneously equipped to comprehend and analyse the real-world and business issues, because of the welcome emphasis laid on the understanding of 'Indian Economy.'
