MILLS

To enable our customers to produce stain-less-steel cold strip, SMS group suppliespowerful 20-high rolling mills as stand-alone systems operating in reversingmode. They come in two versions: theclosed, robust MonoBlock design or themore flexible SplitBlock type. Both typesof roll stand achieve minimum thicknessesdown to 0.1 mm at rolling speeds of up to 1,000 m/min and maximum thicknessreductions of up to 90%. Also available is the option to choose our 18-HS standswith 18-HS roll sets. They are particularlysuited for integration and use in continu-ous production facilities.

Fully automated high-speed roll changing and ultra-dynamiccontrol systems are a must for the implementation of a contin-uous production process. Using several stands in tandemarrangement forms the basis for a high-performance plant con-cept designed to produce premium-quality stainless-steel stripcost-effectively.

Moreover, the complete design of our 18-HS roll sets makes itpossible to revamp existing four-high or six-high stands. Thatcuts investment costs compared to new plants.

Specifically for rolling a very wide product range coveringeverything from soft IF grades to high-strength steel includingstainless steels, SMS has developed the CVC® plus M 18/4.This multi-function stand type can also be retrofitted into exist-ing stands. An extra advantage are the rapid and easy-changeroll set packages in CVC® plus four-high and 18-HS design. One problem steelmakers face is that it’s barely possible tomake a profit when producing small batches on specializedrolling mills. Our solution means manufacturers can expandtheir product ranges at low investment costs.

Two 20-high cold rolling mills

We supplied these two plants to our Chi-nese customer HanYang Stainless SteelCompany (HYSCO) near the capital cityof Guangdong Province, Guangzhou, for-merly known as Canton. HYSCO is a sub-sidiary of Yieh United Steel Co. (YUSCO).In recent years SMS group delivered asmany as five multiroll cold rolling millsdestined for the parent company and itssubsidiaries.

The two new rolling mills cold-roll stain-less-steel hot strip of series AISI 200,300 and 400 with top-quality strip sur-faces. Built in the proven SplitBlockdesign and SB 22 - 52” size, they areideal for strip widths of 800 to 1,300 mmand a maximum entry thickness of 6.0mm. The total drive power is 12,900 kW,with a maximum rolling force of 8,000kN. Each of the stands comes with acapacity of some 80,000 tpy.

We manufactured and pre-assembled the 20-high cold rolling mill stands in ourworkshop in Hilchenbach.

This pre-assembly as well as extensivefunctional testing in our production shopguaranteed hitch-free installation andcommissioning for a fast start of produc-tion by our Chinese customer.

Included in the scope of supply is ourtried-and-tested SUPAFINE® filter systemfor cooling and ultrafine filtering of therolling oil. What makes our SUPAFINE®

filter systems stand out is their top clean-ing performance at low operational costs.They do not require any filter aids, plusthey generate little waste, while oil con-sumption is low. The system is fullyautomated for maximum operationalsafety.

Using its new X-Roll® cold rolling mill inSplitBlock design, the Taiwanese com-pany produces superior-grade stainless-steel strip that meets the high surfacequality requirements of the IT industry.The size-SB 22 - 54“ cold rolling mill rollsaustenitic and ferritic strip in widths from650 to 1,350 mm with a maximum entrythickness of 5.0 mm down to a minimumfinal thickness of 0.15 mm. Extra specialhere is that the plant can handle thickerstainless-steel strip as input stock. Thismaterial is cheaper than thinner inputstock.

There are further advantages due to thedesign of the stand. The split structure in an upper and a lower half means thestand opens wider. As a result, it canaccommodate larger-diameter work rolls.Simultaneously, the design provides veryeasy access during roll changing.

Threading in the strip head end also getseasier. The cooling effect is enhancedbecause the heat can dissipate moreeffectively through the halves of thestand. We also added a roll changingrobot for optimized, reproducible work roll and intermediate roll changing. Therobot changes the work rolls in pairs fullyautomatically and in record time.

Included in the scope of delivery is our tried-and-tested SUPAFINE® filter system for cooling and ultrafine filteringof the rolling oil used. What makes ourSUPAFINE® filter systems stand out istheir top cleaning performance at lowoperational costs. They do not requireany filter aids, plus they generate littlewaste, while oil consumption is low. The system is fully automated for maxi-mum operational safety.

Second 20-high stand

from SMS

This size-22 SplitBlock stand is the sec-ond roll stand SMS group built for YiehUnited Steel Corporation (YUSCO). Hereagain, due to its good experience withthe first facility, our customer opted forthis proven design.

Just like mill stand No. 1, this secondcold rolling stand incorporates all theactuators or control elements requiredfor roll-gap setting. This is ideal for pro-cessing all sorts of strip qualities into precisely rolled finished products.

Also included are a thickness and flat-ness control system as well as a mathe-matical model developed by SMS thatpreset all rolling parameters and controlsthem fully automatically during rolling.There was no need to install an extrauncoiling station because the startingmaterial is introduced into the processdirectly at the reversing coilers.

Lianzhong Stainless Steel Corporation(LISCO), a subsidiary of Taiwan’s YiehUnited Steel Corporation, is a productionfacility built on a greenfield site in south-ern China. To equip this new plant, SMSsupplied one size-22 SplitBlock stand fora rolling width of 1,300 mm as well asone size-21 MonoBlock stand for 1,600-mm-wide strip. Both stands were com-pleted within a very short time and wenton stream in 2006.

The 20-high SplitBlock stand, built in ourHilchenbach workshops, was completelypreassembled, including entry and exit-end equipment as well as the stand plat-form. That allowed us to test the keymotions and functions of the hydraulicsystem prior to final installation in ourcustomer’s works. As a result, we man-aged to cut the original erection andcommissioning schedule by severalweeks.

There are also various actuators or con-trol elements for roll-gap setting thatensure the cold-rolling stand can processa whole range of strip qualities. Also fea-tured is a thickness and flatness controlsystem. All rolling parameters are presetby SMS on the basis of a mathematicalmodel and controlled fully automaticallyduring the rolling process.

for foil production

SMS group received an order from VDMMetals, Germany to build a 20-high coldrolling mill. It is designed for the safe andreliable production of foils – especiallyultrathin foils down to a minimum finalthickness of 20 µm.

The foils consist of high-strength specialalloys and are used for instance in auto-motive catalytic converters. SMS sup-plied the plant on a turnkey basis com-plete with mechanical equipment, utilitysystems, and electrics and automation.

Also featured are highly dynamic actua-tors and effective control systems in theroll stand that optimize the production ofultrathin foils with thickness tolerancesdown to 1 µm. To achieve this level ofperformance, the mill is equipped withfeed-forward and feed-backward mass-flow control systems for thickness con-trol. Here, for the first time in a cold-rolling facility, we incorporated our newSMS flatness measuring roll with closedroll surface.

The mill stand is fitted with all controlelements required to produce super-flatstrip. This includes crown adjustment onbackup shafts A and D, shifting of thefirst intermediate rolls, and adjustingoptions such as tilting and swiveling ofthe top roll set by an AGC system.

First SplitBlock stand

in size SB22

The 20-high mill stand at Yieh UnitedSteel Corporation is the first size-22 SplitBlock stand ever built by SMS group.Taiwan’s largest stainless-steel producer,Yieh United Steel Corporation (YUSCO)operates this 20-high mill to roll strip in widths of 800 to 1,300 mm down tofinal thicknesses of 0.15 mm.

Using its large number of actuators orcontrol elements for roll-gap setting, the roll stand is able to process a wholerange of strip qualities. This was the firsttime we positioned the hydraulic roll-gapadjusting cylinders in the upper part ofthe stand to provide ready access formaintenance. All rolling parameters arepreset by a mathematical model fromSMS and controlled fully automaticallyduring the rolling process. Also installedare control systems to ensure precisefinal thicknesses and perfectly flat strip.

The coils go directly on the reversingcoiler, so there is no need for a separateuncoiling station with pinch roll leveler.

OUTOKUMPU, Finland

The largest SplitBlock stand ever built bySMS group is in operation at Outokumpu(formerly Outokumpu Stainless Steel) inTornio, Finland. It’s the third 20-high rollstand at the Tornio location. Featuring arolling force of 16,000 kN and a maxi-mum strip tension of 600 kN, this power-ful facility is able to process stainless-steel strip in widths of up to 1,625 mmand ingoing thicknesses of up to 8 mm.Coil handling is fully automated usingself-driven coil cars.

The backup shafts are secured in thestand block by a hydraulic saddle clamp-ing device, so there is no need for themaintenance crew to detach them manu-ally. Equally impressive is a robot systemthat changes the work rolls and the firstintermediate rolls fully automatically. The uncoiling station with leveler unitreduces idle times during coil changing.

A large number of actuators or controlelements for roll-gap setting ensure per-fect processing of a whole range of stripqualities. Also included are a thicknessand flatness control system, a mathe-matical model for presetting the rollingparameters, and fully automatic rollingprocess control.

This 20-high rolling mill processes stain-less-steel strip introduced in coils weigh-ing up to 35 t, with diameters of up to2,400 mm. Starting from a maximumentry thickness of 5 mm, the material isrolled to a minimum final thickness of 0.1 mm. Various actuators or control ele-ments for roll-gap setting ensure a wholerange of strip qualities can be processedwith top results.

What also makes this mill stand out is the fact that the work rolls and the firstintermediate rolls are changed fully auto-matically, while the second intermediaterolls and the backup shafts are changedin semiautomatic mode. The hydraulic saddle clamping device that holds thebackup shafts in the stand block elimi-nates the need for the maintenance crewto unclamp them manually. Plus there isan automated transport system that sup-plies the paper winders with fresh papercoils from a store beside the roll stand. To boost productivity, the mill is equippedwith an uncoiling station and a leveler unitfor shorter nonproductive times duringcoil changing. The coil loading and stripthreading sequences are automated.

Also installed here is a thickness and flat-ness control system. All rolling parame-ters are preset using a mathematicalmodel and controlled fully automaticallyduring the rolling process.

This 20-high stand, the fourth at theKrefeld location, processes stainless-steel strip with ingoing thicknesses of up to 8 mm. Configured for top outputand performance, the facility achieves amaximum rolling speed of 1,000 m/min.It comes with a large variety of actuatorsor control elements for roll-gap setting,so the stand can process a whole rangeof strip qualities.

The plant features fully automatic chang-ing of the work rolls and first intermedi-ate rolls, with semi-automatic changingof the second intermediate rolls andbackup shafts. A hydraulic saddle clamp-ing device secures the backup shafts inthe stand block so that manual unclamp-ing by the maintenance crew is unneces-sary. Also featured is an uncoiling stationwith walking-beam coil conveyor and leveler unit that reduces the idle timesduring coil changing. This increases themill’s productivity. The sequences for coil loading and strip threading are auto-mated.

Easy maintenance and ready access areensured by central arrangement of allhydraulic controls on a platform behindthe stand. Finally, there is an extensiveprocess control system consisting of anX-ray thickness measuring system, athickness control system, a flatnessmeasuring roll, and a control system aswell as a mathematical model for preset-ting and controlling all rolling parameters.

North American Stainless (NAS), USA, asubsidiary of the Spanish Acerinox Group,awarded SMS group a contract in 2015for a 20-high MonoBlock cold rolling mill.NAS intends to use the size-MB22B-54”rolling mill in its state-of-the-art, high-per-formance production facility for bright-annealed stainless-steel strip in Ghent,Kentucky. Apart from the cold rolling mill,SMS group is supplying NAS with themost modern and powerful bright anneal-ing line anywhere in the USA.

There is good reason for NAS to makethis investment. It enables the companyto expand into the production of bright-annealed stainless steel. This material isincreasingly in demand in the USA, whichcurrently relies partly on imports. Immedi-ately striking about the cold-rolled stain-less steel strip with BA surface quality isthe mirror finish. Typical applications arehousehold appliances and kitchen uten-sils. Furthermore, it’s a versatile materialused for many other products that requirenot only the properties of stainless steel,but also high-quality, polished surfaces –for instance medical instruments or prod-ucts in the transport sector.

The new plants will process bothaustenitic and ferritic grades (AISI 200,300, and 400 series). The finished material will measure between 600 and 1,350 mm wide and between 0.15and 1.5 mm thick. Not only responsiblefor the mechanical systems, process

engineering, furnace technology, and electrics andautomation, SMS will also provide commissioning sup-port and operator training. The entire strip guide controlsystem will come from EMG Automation.

The 20-high MonoBlock cold rolling mill of type MB22B-54” will process hot strip thicknesses of up to 6.2 mil-limeters. Characteristic of the compact and robust plantis the high stand rigidity. It achieves a maximum rollingrate of 800 meters per minute and a maximum roll sepa-rating force of 8,000 kN for impressive thickness reduc-tion. Among the stand-out features are roll-gap controland crown adjustment for backup shafts B/C and F/G aswell as first intermediate roll shifting. Also included in the supply package are the auxiliary and additional plants.For instance, the regenerative SUPAFINE® filter systemensures eco-friendly cleaning and efficient cooling of therolling oil. Equally important for the plant's green creden-tials is the extraction system. It complies with the strictlocal environment protection laws. To reduce idle times,the mill is equipped with two reversing coilers and anuncoiling station with a leveler and cropping shear.

First SMS 20-high stand

for Malaysia

Since 2012, Bahru Stainless SDN BHDhas been operating Malaysia’s first 20-high cold rolling mill. The plant wassupplied by SMS group. Prior to its longjourney to South-East Asia, the machinewas pre-assembled in the SMS work-shop in Hilchenbach. As a result of thepre-assembly and subsequent functionaltests, installation and runup in Malaysiawent without a hitch.

Bahru Stainless ordered the 20-high cold rolling mill from SMS group for itsnew cold strip complex in Johor Bahru in February 2011. The Asian cold stripmanufacturer is a member of the Span-ish Acerinox Group, one of the world’slargest stainless steel producers. Demon-strating just how strong it is, the com-pany built a facility in Southern Malaysiathat will produce one million t of stain-less steel strip per year in its final expan-sion phase.

BAHRU STAINLESS, Malaysia

SMS supplied the 20-high MB 22 B - 52”cold rolling mill. It processes austeniticand ferritic strip grades in widths of up to 1,320 millimeters and achieves maxi-mum thickness reduction. Astonishingthough it may seem, the minimum rolled final gage is 0.15 mm while rollingspeeds of up to 800 meters per minuteare possible.

Included in the scope of supply are theentry and exit groups with high-tensionreversing coilers for strip tensions of upto 500 kN, the leveler, and the croppingshear. To ensure eco-friendly cleaningand cooling of the rolling oil, the plantalso features our proven SUPAFINE®

filter system.

As ever, the SMS workshop in Hilchen-bach manufactured the key componentsof the cold rolling mill to high qualitystandards. They were pre-assembledincluding piping and cabling, then sub-jected to functional tests.

Two 20-high stands

for stainless steel start-up

When one of China’s largest steel pro-ducers, Benxi Iron & Steel (Group) Co.,entered into the large-scale production of high-quality stainless steel strip, it wasan exciting development on the Chinesesteel market. To implement its plans, the group ordered two X-Roll® cold rollingmill stands in 20-high design from SMSgroup in April 2008. Following commis-sioning in summer and fall 2010, BenxiIron & Steel boasted the capacity to pro-duce a massive 200,000 t of stainless-steel strip per year.

The new 20-high MonoBlock cold rollingmill stands roll stainless-steel hot strip(annealed and pickled) of series types300 and 400. They are capable of pro-cessing strip up to 1,350 mm wide and 6 mm thick. After processing, the mini-mum final gage is 0.2 mm. Each plantfeatures a total drive power of 12,500 kWfor rolling speeds of up to 800 metersper minute.

When deciding on the rolling mill technol-ogy, the steel giant considered not onlythe high quality of the final products, but also eco-friendly production methods.To save resources and protect the envi-ronment, both X-Roll® systems wereequipped with modern SUPAFINE® filtersystems.

BENXI IRON & STEEL(GROUP) CO., China

SMS developed this solution specificallyfor ultrafine filtration of rolling oils. Itoperates without filter aids, so it gener-ates no unusable waste products. Alsoincluded in our scope of supply is theextraction system.

Keen to successfully complete thesestrategically important plants, Benxi Iron& Steel relied on our comprehensiveexpertise. SMS designed and manufac-tured the mechanical equipment, super-vised assembly and installation, and wasalso responsible for the commissioningon site.

Then, after manufacturing the core com-ponents in our workshops in Hilchen-bach, we pre-assembled individual plantmodules and put them through extensivefunctional tests. That ensured fast andsmooth start of production in China.

Multi-talent for stainless steel,

titanium, and special grades

It was May 2011 when Chinese companyBaoshan Special Steel Branch, or BSSB,issued us with the Final Acceptance Certificate (FAC) for the 20-high type-MB 22 B - 52” cold rolling mill we sup-plied. BSSB uses the mill to roll austeniticand ferritic stainless steel strip, specialsteel strip, and strip made of titaniumand nickel special alloys. The strip widthsvary between 600 and 1,300 mm andreach minimum final thicknesses of 0.3 mm. That is after a maximum ingoingthickness of 7.0 mm.

The core of the plant is the MonoBlockmill stand. This stand type comes withmany advantages and ensures cost-effective production of cold strip made of stainless steel, titanium, and specialsteels. Particularly useful is the modulardesign. It means we can pre-assembleand test the plant in advance. This signifi-cantly reduces the manufacturing andfinal assembly times.

The rolling mill boasts a capacity of60,000 tpy and is part of BSSB’s newproduction plant for high-performancematerials. Incidentally, we also supplied a continuous annealing and pickling linefor this facility.

Third and fourth 20-high stand

from SMS

Seeing that we successfully set up thestainless-steel production at its Tianjinlocation, our customer decided to expandfurther into the profitable stainless-steelmarket. To ensure quick and smoothimplementation of this project, ZJYTSSopted for us to supply two new 20-highrolling mills. They are planning to doublethe existing plant’s cold-rolling capacity to 400,000 t.

Just like mill stands No. 1 and 2, thenew cold-rolling facilities are built in theproven MonoBlock design and equippedwith cutting-edge technology from SMSgroup. The production range comprisesstainless-steel strip with a maximumwidth of 1,350 mm and ingoing thick-nesses of up to 6 mm rolled down to afinal minimum thickness 0.15 mm.

Both sides of the roll stands are fittedwith high-tension reversing coilers plusthe entry and exit facilities required forcost-effective production of stainlesssteel strip. There was no need to investin an additional uncoiling station becausethe input coils can be loaded directlyonto the reversing coilers. Installed inboth mills is not only a highly dynamicthickness and flatness control system,but also a mathematical model for pre-setting all process parameters, and fully automatic control of the rollingprocess.

Acciai Speciali Terni is Italy’s largeststainless-steel producer and belongs tothe ThyssenKrupp Stainless group, aEuropean producer of high-quality stain-less-steel strip designed to supply glob-ally rising demand.

This mill in proven, compact MonoBlockdesign processes pickled stainless-steelstrip of the AISI 400 (ferritic) and AISI300 (austenitic) grades in widths of up to1,370 mm and maximum ingoing thick-nesses of 6.3 mm.

It took just 12 months to completedesign, procurement, manufacture, andshop assembly. The MonoBlock – includ-ing the base frame and gear unit – waspre-assembled before transport to Italy,installed in record time, and commis-sioned several weeks ahead of the con-tracted deadline.

The mill consists of two reversing coil-ers, one uncoiling station with levelerunit, and a mobile crop shear to minimizethe nonproductive times during coilchanging. Fully automated control sys-tems for precise strip thickness and opti-mal flatness ensure cold-rolled finishedproducts of supreme quality. All rollingparameters are preset automatically by a mathematical model.

Included in the SMS supply scope were the design, manufacture, erection,and commissioning of the mechanicalequipment including ancillaries such ashydraulic, rolling-oil, fire-extinguishing,and fume exhaust systems.

It was just one year after branching outinto the stainless-steel market in 2005that Zhejiang Yuantong Stainless Steel,ZJYTSS, ordered and commissioned afurther 20-high cold-rolling stand fromSMS. Building mill No. 2 represented the next step in ZJYTSS’s expansion program. This helped the ambitious company to boost production by another80,000 tpy of top-quality stainless-steelstrip.

Identical in design to stand No. 1, millstand No. 2 processes pickled stainless-steel strip with a maximum width of1,350 mm and ingoing thicknesses of up to 6 mm.

What makes the “Zero-Crown”MonoBlock stand out is its high rigidity.Plus it features entry and exit-side high-tension reversing coilers as well as allthe required auxiliary equipment.

An additional uncoiling station with pinchroll leveler increases productivity byallowing all preparatory work for the nextcoil to be done while rolling is underway.

To achieve closest thickness tolerancesand optimal flatness, the plant comeswith effective control systems. Themathematical model controls all the para-meters required for reliable and preciserolling fully automatically.

Highly satisfied withthe equipment at its main location in Taiwan, our customer decided to utilizeonce again SMS group’s proven 20-highstand technology and equipment at itsnew production plant in China.

Included in the SMS supply scope wasnot only the size-22 SplitBlock stand, but also a second cold-rolling mill inMonoBlock design. This stand processesstainless-steel strip with a maximumwidth of 1,600 mm and ingoing thick-nesses of up to 6 mm into high-qualitycold strip.

The wide stand block is of “Zero-Crown”design and features excellent rigidity atminimum mill spring under rolling load.To provide for easier and reduced mainte-nance, the backup shafts are secured inthe stand block by a hydraulic saddleclamping device.

Taiyuan Iron & Steel Co. Ltd. (TISCO),China’s leading stainless-steel producer,ordered five 20-high mills from SMSgroup at a stroke. This was the largestsingle order for 20-high roll stands everawarded to any supplier. Even so, all ofthe stands went on stream ahead of thecontracted deadline. Not only responsiblefor these five 20-high mills, SMS alsosupplied TISCO with an inline skin-passmill for its hot-strip annealing and picklingline in 2005.

The MonoBlock cold-rolling facilities are designed to process very high coilweights of up to 35 t with a maximumcoil diameter of 2,400 mm.

All of the 20-high stands feature high-tension reversing coilers on both sides as well as the necessary entry and exitequipment. The first mill additionallyincorporates an uncoiling station for effi-cient and smooth processing of hot stripcoils with maximum strip thicknesses.

To ensure closest tolerances, each of thecold-rolling stands features a thicknessand flatness control system. A mathe-matical model presets all rolling parame-ters, which are then controlled fully auto-matically during the rolling process.

Ever since 2001, Shanghai Krupp Stain-less Co. Ltd. (SKS) has been producinghigh-quality stainless-steel strip ofaustenitic and ferritic grades on a 20-highcold rolling mill manufactured by SMSgroup. SKS is a joint venture betweenOutokumpu Nirosta (formerly ThyssenKrupp Stainless) and Baosteel that pro-duces stainless steel in China.

What began with its German operationsin Krefeld, Benrath, and Dillenburg led toOutokumpu Nirosta’s logically consistentdecision to equip the Shanghai plant withproven 20-high stand technology andequipment engineered by SMS.

The new mill in MonoBlock designprocesses pickled stainless steel stripwith a maximum width of 1,340 mmfrom an ingoing thickness of up to 5 mm.

To be able to add even wide strip to therange produced at its Terni location, ourcustomer once again opted for a plantmade by SMS group.

The 20-high mill in the proven, compactMonoBlock design processes stainlesssteel strip in widths of up to 1,575 mmfrom ingoing thicknesses of max. 5 mm.

Special here is the “Zero-Crown” standblock design featuring maximum rigidityat minimum mill spring under rolling load.

It’s the sixth 20-high cold-rolling mill SMShas built for this customer.

To ensure easier replacement, thebackup shafts are secured in the standblock by a hydraulic saddle clampingdevice. Also included in the mill is a fullyautomatic thickness and flatness controlsystem. All rolling parameters are presetby a mathematical model and controlledonline during operation.

What happens here is that the input coilsare introduced into the process directlyat the reversing coiler. That eliminatesthe need for extra investment in anuncoiling station.

Integrated tandem mill

for stainless-steel cold strip

Chinese stainless steel producer TISCO(Shanxi Taigang Stainless Steel Com-pany), a subsidiary of the Taigang GroupInternational Trade Co. Ltd., awardedSMS group a contract for two fully con-tinuous cold tandem mills in CVC® plussix-high and 18-HS design, both featuringa strip cleaning section. This investmentgives TISCO an extra capacity of morethan one million t of stainless-steel stripper year.

Each cold rolling mill forms the heart ofan integrated, continuous production linefor stainless-steel cold strip, also knownas a white sheet rolling annealing andpickling line (WRAPL). The two new production lines will be erected by a con-sortium in Taiyuan city in the Chineseprovince of Shanxi. The WRAPL configu-ration ensures TISCO produces stainlesssteel especially cost-effectively becauserolling, annealing, and pickling all takeplace in one pass.

As the supplier of the tandem mills, thetwo strip cleaning sections, and the ten-sion roll sets, SMS group is a significantmember of the consortium. Both tandemmills process hot strip pre-treated in ahot strip annealing and pickling line alsosupplied by SMS.

This TCM 300 tandem mill in 18-HSdesign is the second of its kind in theworld. The first was built by SMS in2009. It rolls AISI 300-series stainless-steel strip and has an annual capacity of up to 600,000 t.

SHANXI TAIGANG STAINLESSSTEEL COMPANY, China

The annealed and pickled stainless-steelstrip enters the five-stand mill at a speedof up to 170 meters per minute.

Further down the line, the top processspeed in the run-out area is 370 metersper minute. Here, the finished coilsweigh a maximum of 35 t. The high-techtandem line features five mill stands in18-HS design (HS = horizontal stabiliza-tion). Particularly high reductions perpass result from the slimline work rolls,making production especially cost-effec-tive.

Completing both tandem mills is a strip cleaning section from SMS. Some30 meters long, the horizontal cleaningsection removes residual rolling emulsionfrom the surface in several processstages. The stages are separated fromeach other by squeeze rolls, and eachstage has its own circulation system.

During a ceremony on December 16,2009 attended by POSCO-Chairman Joon-Yang Chung, the new four-standhigh-tech tandem cold rolling mill we builtfor POSCO was officially put into opera-tion. POSCO exclusively uses this fullycontinuous tandem mill in 18-HS designthat is unique in the world for stainless-steel strip. Much earlier, at the end ofAugust, the mill was commissioned, andone-shift production had already started.

Immediately afterward, the plant achieveda model runup phase. It easily met all pro-duction requirements. The record produc-tion volume for a single day in this phasewas around 1,500 t of rolled stainlessstrip. Some results were even better thanthe target, for example the work rollchanging time was under the prescribedtwo minutes per roll set.

High reductions per pass. The core com-ponents of the high-tech tandem mill arethe four stands in 18-HS design. Specialfeatures included are the small-diameterwork rolls for exceptionally high reduc-tions per pass. That ensures extremelycost-effective production of 500,000 t ofstainless-steel strip per year. The slimlinework rolls are supported at the sides toabsorb the strong horizontal forces. Theyare driven by axially adjustable intermedi-ate rolls.

Versatile as well as efficient, the tandemmill can process both hot and cold strip of AISI series 300 and 400. It producesstainless-steel strip in widths of up to

1,350 mm and a minimum final thicknessof 0.4 mm. The maximum ingoing thick-ness is 5.0 mm.

Optimized with T-roll®. Applying our T-roll®

process model, we set the plant parame-ters and calculated the optimal tempera-ture pattern in the rolled material. This isalso how we determined other factorssuch as suitable cooling and lubricationstrategies to ensure maximum passreductions under stable roll-gap condi-tions, and to limit the coiling temperatureto a maximum of 100 °C.

Equipment in the entry and exit areas.The entry area of the continuous tandemmill consists of a payoff reel, a weldingmachine, and a horizontal looper. Alsocontracted to equip the run-out area, wesupplied two coilers with continuouspaper feed, a drum shear, and our inte-grated Rotary Inspect strip inspection line.There is no need to interrupt the processfor wrapping, because the carousel-type paper winder ensures continuousoperation, including automatic paper rollchanging.

Inline inspection with Rotary Inspect.Rotary Inspect is an innovative qualityassurance system that facilitates inlineinspection of the rolled strip. It comeswith several advantages over conven-tional inspection devices. Possibly themost impressive is that strip samples can be taken at rolling speeds of up to100 meters per minute. Once the samplehas been clamped into place, no furthermanual handling is necessary. Theergonomically designed inspection plat-form enables easy, reliable examination of both sides of the strip.

To supplement its two 20-high standsfrom SMS group, Yieh United Steel Corporation contracted us to supply an18-high cold-rolling mill. It’s a new typeof stand SMS has added to its portfolioof state-of-the-art mill stand technology.

A special feature of the 18-HS design arethe slim work rolls with a diameter of120 mm. There is also horizontal supportprovided by adjustable supporting rollerbridges. This ensures lateral stabilizationof the work rolls during the rollingprocess.

Also incorporated in the mill stand are anHS shifting system for the work rolls aswell as an axial shifting and bending sys-tem for the intermediate rolls. All actua-tors or control elements for roll-gap set-ting provide the capability to process awhole range of hot-strip grades into high-quality cold-rolled products. Due to a fullyautomated thickness control system, thestainless-steel strip produced featuresprecise dimensions. All rolling parame-ters are preset by an electronic databasesystem for many different rolling pro-grams and pass schedule strategies.

It’s surprisingly easy to operate mills ofthis type both in reversing mode and asinline stands for rolling scale-affected hotstrip or conventional cold strip. Installedin integrated rolling, annealing, and pick-ling lines, 18-HS roll stands in tandemarrangement comprise the technologicalunit for thickness reduction.
