Multipurpose-System X100 / X200most flexible with interchangeable shaft and

mixing/dispersing tool

A system which is well-established in laboratory and pilot plant is nowavailable for production as well.

With the Multipurpose system you get all the advantages of interchangeableshafts and tools - well known from the ystral X50 pilot plant system - forproduction of batch sizes up to 2.000 litres.

The machine consists of a drive, a mixing shaft with separate bearing, astator tube and an encapsulated mechanical seal. The shaft can be easilyremoved and cleaned while the machine is operated with a second shaft. For hygienic reasons all connections are sealed with O-rings according to theGMP guidelines. Superior versatility is achieved when using the Multipurposesystem with a ystral moveable lift or wall hoist.

Universal changes over machinesallow flexible processes and are thebasis for a future orientedinvestmentDr.-Ing. Hans-Joachim Jacob

The application engineer or theoperational person again and again facesthe question which machine has to beimplemented into a process. He very wellknows the daily business, and he is awareof the actual desired results and processrequirements but he also knows thatprocesses are being modified very often.Until today he cannot evaluate whether inone years time the range of products hasto be extended, or whether newcomponents have to be treated, which

might be more sensitive to shear energyand for this reason may not be dispersedanymore. Very often the initiative comesfrom the purchasing department as theycould manage to order a more costeffective raw material that is coarser andnow suddenly requires much strongerdispersing. Finally customers request may change aswell, and there is also a permanentrequest for higher quality. It does notmake any sense to order and install a newmachine for each new demand. Thesubsequent modification requiresprojecting, and very often an interruptionof the production, which might be verycost intensive during the requiredmodification. In many cases it isnecessary to install new piping or newflanges for the vessels, inspectioncertification, extension of the monitoringsystem and even electrical controlsystems - the consequential cost are veryhigh.Ant ic ipatory plann ing, poss ib lemodifications, flexibility and futureorientation are important aspects duringthe evaluation of the required investment. For laboratory scale equipment it isalready long established practice to haveeasily exchanged tools. It is mandatory

for the whole palette of similar processesto realise the case with the same drive, the same installation and the sameelectrical control system. For thispurpose, the drive is equipped with acoupling that allows a quick exchange ofthe actual mixing and dispersing tools.

Now this system has been applied toindustrial machines and it has proved tobe very successful. The exchangeableshaft is designed in such a way that therotating shaft is completely separatedfrom the motor shaft. The sealing towardsthe product is effected by an integratedmechanical seal. The coupling to the motor is easy toloosen and reconnect. The tool fitting(adapter) at the lower end of theexchangeable shaft is the very same forall different tools used. It is also possibleto quickly and completely change thewhole shaft including the tool or in caseyou use a single exchangeable shaft onlyto remove the shaft and then change themixing tool only to meet the requirementsof the process. For complete homogeneous mixing andsuspending ais used. Without the use of baffles in thevessel, this mixer creates a verticalcirculation in the tank without anyrotation of the mixture. For an intensive dispersing result, a

is being used instead. This head works according to the rotor-stator-principle of a teeth-shear-ringmachine and is used for size reduction ofsolid particles or for emulsifying.A combination of a disperser and aJetstream mixer is the . Whilea Jetstream mixer homogeneously mixesthe contents of the vessel, a partialstream of the product is forced through ad ispe rs i ng zone and becomessimultaneously dispersed. This machine isvery interesting as different to simpledispersing it avoids an inhomogeneousdistribution of the dispersing effect.Without any need to install a secondmixer, even high viscosity products in avessel can be homogeneously dispersed. For this reason the Dispermix besides thenormal dispersing tasks may be used fora fast dissolving of thickening agents andfor the reduction of agglomerates. TheDispermix is capable of dissolving evenhighly thickening, swelling materials(CMC, Xanthan, Guar, Carbopol andsimilar) quickly and absolutely free ofagglomerates. The Dispermix is available in a specialversion to break large solid lumps into aliquid. A good example of this is thedispersing of fat and wax blocks, or thedispersing of materials as frozen blocks. In this case the Dispermix provides anenormous reduction in processing time. With the three different tools mentionedabove, all processing tasks from gentle

mixing to intensive dispersing may becarried out.A newly developed system is the

that may be used incombination with the Multipurpose-Machine. This mixer builds up a strongvacuum in the centre of the mixing head. With this vacuum, powders may be inducted

directly from a bag into a liquidby using an induction tube and hose. Thebags do not have to be lifted and poured intothe vessel. The mixing-in of the powder iseffected below the liquid surface. No crustbuilds up at the wall or at the shaft of themixer.
