Multiplication
In the second quarter, students will multiply using various strategies.
Strategies:• repeated addition• equal groups• arrays• skip-counting• commutative property• associative property• distributive property
Repeated Addition
Students will understand that 4 x 3 can be solved by using repeated addition.
Example: 4 + 4 + 4
Equal Groups
Students will understand that 4 x 3 can be solved by creating equal groups.
Example:
ArraysAn array is a group of objects arranged in rows and columns. Students will know how to identify and create arrays to solve multiplication problems.
Example
3 rows with 4 in each row = 3 x 4 = 12
Skip Counting
Students will use skip-counting to solve multiplication problems.
Example:
3 x 4
3 6 9 12 15 18 24 27 30
Commutative Property
Students will be able to demonstrate the commutative property by writing related equations.
Example
4 x 3 = 12 3 x 4 =12
Associative PropertyStudents will be able to use the associative property to solve equations with more than 2 factors. Students will know that it doesn’t matter which order you multiply, your answer will remain the same.
Example:
2 x 3 x 5 = 30
2 x 3 6 x 5 = 30Or3 x 5 15 x 2 =30Or 2 x 5 10 x 3 = 30
Distributive PropertyStudents will be able to apply the distributive property to solve multiplication problems.
Example:
8 x 7 = 56 can be solved by breaking apart the 7 into 2 addends (2 + 5) and then multiplying 8 by each addend:
8 x 2 = 168 x 5 = 4016 + 40 = 56
Multiplication Facts
Students will also be expected to memorize their multiplication facts. We will practice our facts by:
Playing gamesUsing flash cardsOnline resources such as sumdog.com, etc. Weekly timed tests • these will start in November• these will not be recorded as a grade; they are just
for practice
