Company background •  Active Corporation – a trading company established in 1992 for

promoting products of overseas companies in Bangladesh.

•  MULTIPLE TRADING, a sister concern of Active Corporation established in 1997 to import equipment and transformer raw materials for transformer manufacturers.

•  In the year 2000, MULTIPLE TRADING became the first distributor of ABB SACE, Italy in Bangladesh for Low Voltage Circuit Breakers like MCCB & ACB and subsequently, MCB from ABB STOTZ-KONTAKT, Germany.

•  MULTIPLE TRADING also deals in Medium Voltage Circuit Breakers – VCB and Low voltage control products as a Channel Partner of ABB.

•  MULTIPLE LIGHT BRICKS and BLOCKS – is a sister concern of MULTIPLE TRADING established in 2014 and obtained permission from Board of Investment (BOI) for setting up the factory.

MULTIPLE LIGHT BRICKS & BLOCKS

MULTIPLE LIGHT BRICKS & BLOCKS is the first manufacturer of preformed Cellular Lightweight Concrete & Concrete Cover Block in Bangladesh. Began production in June 2015.

Our factory is located at Boliarpur Bus Stop, Boliarpur, Savar, Dhaka.

What is clear cover for reinforcement in R.C.C work?

Clear cover is the least distance between the surface of the used reinforcement and outer surface of the concrete.

Page 7: Multiple Cover Blocks

Why do we need to maintain clear cover in R.C.C?

•  To protect the steel reinforcement bar(rebar) from environmental effects to prevent their corrosion.

•  To provide thermal insulation, which protects the rebar from fire.

•  To give rebar sufficient embedding to enable them to be stressed without slipping.

The clear cover must have a minimum thickness for following reasons:

Page 8: Multiple Cover Blocks

What is the right amount of clear cover? The right amount of cover depends on environmental condition, rebar diameter, aggregate size, depth of structure and application. The minimum thickness of reinforcement cover is indicated in the drawings or shall be obtained from the relevant code of practice.

Application Clear Cover Slab 20mm to 25mm Beam 40mm to 50mm Column 40mm to 50mm Foundation, Pile 75 mm

In normal environment following covers are practiced in our country.

Page 9: Multiple Cover Blocks

What is cover block?

Cover blocks are used to maintain aforesaid clear cover between rebar & shuttering in R.C.C work as indicated in the drawings.

Page 10: Multiple Cover Blocks

Field practice of maintaining clear cover •  Sand-cement mortar blocks as made by masons at site.

•  Broken bricks as available & picked up by masons.

•  Broken stones, tiles etc.

•  Site made rebar chair.

•  Supervisors generally depend on masons work.

•  Quality and placement of cover blocks are usually over

looked.

Page 11: Multiple Cover Blocks

Does the field practiced(site made) cover block comply the technical requirements?

Ø Not uniform in size, shape & thickness.

Ø Possibility to displacement at the time of concreting for

irregular size, shape & thickness.

Ø Site made mortar blocks are usually porous.

Ø Site made mortar blocks are not the same quality of

concrete.

Ø  Naturally, site made cover block does not comply the

technical requirements.

Page 12: Multiple Cover Blocks

Pictures of site made cover block

Page 13: Multiple Cover Blocks

Pictures of practical use of site made cover block at construction site.

Page 14: Multiple Cover Blocks

Why do we compromise/ accept this at site?

Only reason is non-availability

of quality cover block in the

construction material market.

Page 15: Multiple Cover Blocks

Type of concrete cover block

Page 16: Multiple Cover Blocks

What is in International Standard about cover block?

In accordance with BS 8110-1 (Section 7. Specification & Workmanship: Reinforcement, 7.3 Fixing)

Concrete spacer (Cover Block) made on

the construction site should not be used.

Page 17: Multiple Cover Blocks

•  Difficult to maintain uniform size & shape, thus site made cover block can not ensure the specified distance between rebar & shuttering.

•  Porous

•  Allow ingress of water vapor and gases

•  Strength less than surrounding concrete.

•  More wastage.

Why not site made cover block?

Page 18: Multiple Cover Blocks

Comparison between site made cover block & machine made cover block: Topics Site made cover blocks Machine made cover blocks

Clear cover maintain

Compressive strength

Less than surrounding concrete. More than or equal to surrounding concrete.

More than surrounding concrete Less than or equal to surrounding concrete

Shape Not uniform in most of the cases. Usually square shaped & plain top surface for resting rebar, which occurs displacement of rebar while concreting.

Uniformed shape. Have uniform grip to bear rebar , which protects rebar from displacement while concreting.

Possibility to displacement at the time of concreting

Curing Not well cured in most of the cases. Well cured

Page 19: Multiple Cover Blocks

Why do we need uniform shaped cover block?

Without using uniform shaped cover block the rebar used in concrete gets cranked and the rebar can not take the design load resulting premature failure of the structure.

Page 20: Multiple Cover Blocks

Result of using site made cover block If we don’t provide the proper clear cover, rebar will corrode with time and will ultimately result in premature failure of the structure…

For the first time In

Bangladesh

Multiple cover block is a multi-

dimensional concrete cover

block which is used to ensure

the perfect clear cover to

rebar in concrete structure.

Features of MULTIPLE COVER BLOCK ´ Made of high quality concrete elements.

´ Uniform size & shape.

´ Cast in precision molds to ensure the accurate dimension.

´ High compressive strength (6000 psi to 8000 psi)

´ Having uniform grip, it mightn’t displace while concrete casting.

´ Low water absorption.

´ Labor cost savings due to rapid and simple rebar laying operation.

´ Cost effective

´ No wastages

´ Ready to use.

Benefit of MULTIPLE COVER BLOCK:

•  It is only possible to keep the distance between rods and shuttering in RCC by the use of MULTIPLE COVER BLOCK.

•  The rebars get embedded in the concrete properly restricting the chance of the rebars to the exposed to environmental effects of corroding and rusting.

•  Properly embedded rebars with their straightness and curves as per drawing is maintained by the MULTIPLE COVER BLOCK enabling the rebars to sustain designed load.

Comments of Engineers & Contractors about use of MULTIPLE COVER BLOCK.

•  It’s a very good product in quality, size & shape.

•  We can maintain clear cover according to

engineering drawing and can ensure quality concrete

work.

•  Price is reasonable.

Page 41: Multiple Cover Blocks

Other Comments

•  Product is very good but we do not have separate

budget to buy and use.

•  Product is very good to use but it is not in the

rate schedule as a separate product. So we make

it at site to use.

•  We shall buy and use it, once it is included in the

rate schedule.

Page 42: Multiple Cover Blocks

We hope Engineers, Consultants, Owners will

specify MULTIPLE COVER BLOCK in the

Structural design & drawings to use in

concrete.

Our request is to include MULTIPLE COVER

BLOCK in the rate schedule, so that contractors

can buy and use it to ensure quality concreting.
