OVERVIEW

One of the world’s leading energy companies partnered with Humanyze to understand where certain teams and business units should be located globally.Starting with an initial analysis of their Southeast Asian Production Unit, it was their goal to measure the impact of different business units on the organization and how organizational changes affect employee satisfaction.

The analysis of the Southeast Asian Production Unit highlighted areas where the company could place teams based on how they work and collaborate. On average, similar projects see 5.3 percent increased productivity when using communication patterns to help determine team placement. As a result, Humanyze’s ability to measure the effectiveness of the energy company’s strategy allowed for this approach to be replicated across other business units as well.

Historically, there were no standard measures for understanding decision-making or collaboration within the company. With Humanyze’s proprietary metrics and measurement abilities, the customer has been able to objectively inform the placement of personnel across global locations and strategically organize where key employees and leadership teams are positioned. Other projects have included working with the Property Services division to assess company culture, leadership capabilities, and a strategic Upstream reorganization. Based on previous insights, leadership has been able to make better, informed decisions that have positively impacted both employees and the company at large.

With various global offices, as well as shifting roles and departmental needs, the business is often faced with the challenge of assessing and optimizing where their employees are located. For this reason, the energy company engaged Humanyze to help its leaders understand the intricate relationships between teams, both in the physical offices and digital space.

More specifically, the company wanted to learn if it had placed teams correctly and whether they were collaborating with the appropriate people. They also wanted to learn how to maximize employee resources effectively by eliminating unnecessary meetings and ensuring employees are in the right location to collaborate with teammates.

For the project to be successful, Humanyze needed to determine where and how people were placed, information that typically lives in various siloed systems. One of Humanyze’s differentiators is the ability to aggregate information from disparate systems into a single platform, to help companies visualize the data holistically and uncover potential correlations.

THE CHALLENGE

“Over the past decades, leading companies have found success through very specific types of culture and business practices; in order to remain competitive and adapt to market needs, it takes prioritizing what’s most important — your people. Addressing individual culture and organizational health, while being mindful about the globality of the industry, will ultimately impact revenue and growth,” said Ben Waber, president at Humanyze. “Humanyze’s analytical capabilities allow decisions to be made about where to place teams in an intelligent, informed way that’s the least disruptive to business.”

– Ben Waber, president at Humanyze

Determining the strategic placement of teams and how employees at the energy company collaborate took nine months to implement, measure and analyze. Humanyze measured anonymized data at the macro-level from the customer’s Microsoft Exchange stack, which included calendar, email, Skype, and call data. The business areas of interest included decision making, access to managers, productivity, burnout risks, and team connections.

THE STRATEGY

To conduct the analysis, Humanyze metrics were used to measure space usage by teams, team capabilities, and collaboration. The key metrics measured were:

• Meeting Count (total # of meetings by team)

• Workday Length (average hours worked daily by team)

• Time Allocation (how time is spent during and after business hours)

• Team Cohesion (how tight-knit teams are)

• Ratio of meetings to overall communication

• Manager Visibility (how accessible are managers to direct reports?)

At the conclusion of the analysis, Humanyze presented company leaders with robust analytics reporting that enabled them to inform the right decisions for both employees and better business outcomes.

The customer is now continuously validating and predicting whether reduced time in meetings and improved location of teams can drive the desired collaboration while maintaining a positive work-life balance.

The company is also considering these results and actions globally to foster a better culture while optimizing the use of their commercial real estate space.

RESULTS

““THANKS TO HUMANYZE, WE HAVE BEEN ABLE TO MAKE ORGANIZATIONAL DECISIONS WITH MUCH GREATER SPEED AND CERTAINTY AT SCALE,”

– said an energy company representative.

This example at the southeast production unit can be used to inform similar challenges at other locations, however it’s important to account for each location’s nuances, work styles, and culture to design the best space possible.

The closely cultivated relationship between Humanyze and the energy company allows for this type of continuous measurement, analysis, and adjustment.

Humanyze is the only solution today with the science-backed capabilities to measure digital and in-person collaboration, empowering customers to continuously measure various aspects of work across the organization to identify different needs based on region, function, or work styles.

PROJECT TAKEAWAYS

Humanyze validates decisions using decades of research so that organizational health isn’t left to chance, allowing companies to create optimal workspaces and a better global organizational culture.

This allows for more tailored decision-making that will positively impact both employees and companies at large.

To meet the needs of today’s workforce, companies are recognizing the need to shift their culture, processes, and the overall workplace experience.

At larger companies with established cultures, it can be difficult to remove emotions, subjectivity, and bias from decision-making, which can hinder the implementation of crucial initiatives like this one.
