Multimediaas a data source
Multimedia is.. ?
● Media mix, e.g. text, sound and pictures.
● Terms such as: collage, montage, mosaic, mixed media, layers, overlays, interleaved, muxed.
● Digital container formats, holding: chunks, atoms, parts, packets, segments, e.g. TIFF = image data and metadata.
Multimedia is.. ?
● Films and web pages can have graphics, moving image, sound, and possibly code.
● Digitised documents have images and text (transcription, annotations, mark up).
● Satellite images (Landsat 7) have 8 spectral bands and 15-60m temporal resolution.
Research domains
Some examples: film and performance studies, social science, literary studies, genetics, astronomy, linguistics, pathology..
Others?
Research methods
What is the researcher doing and why? ● What methods are they using to create
and process data or information? ● Are they qualitative and quantitative
research methods? ● Is the processing by a human or with
computer settings?
Example: annotation (contextual)
Genetics: electronic, literature, sequence-based. Geoscience: map, map document, data frame, graphic.Linguistics: descriptive, analytic, time sequence, text. Biomedicine: graphics, notes, marker.
“The Prosecution Project”
● Centre of Excellence: Policing & Security
● “analysis of the criminal trial over time and in comparative perspective” (ASSA)
● Archival materials digitised and transcribed
Information or and data source?
● Case files, depositions, gazettes, newspapers
● Digitised image and transcriptions● Reading, text analysis, data mining
What is information and what is data?
Managing multimedia
Content, document, information, data management, what’s the difference?Multiple components, are they embedded and layered, or in different file formats? Captured and stored within an application, are components as separate files to or part of the primary object’s file format?
Three applications
How do they store/package digital material? ● Final Cut Pro: project, media source,
render and case files. ● ArcGIS: map documents, layers and
datasets. ● WordPress: posts, pages, comments,
categories and tags.
