Protection and ControlTheB30BusDifferentialSystemprovides,secure, subcycle low impedance busprotection for a single busbar with upto six feeders. The B30 is ideally suitedin applications where high impedanceschemes were typically used. Overallsystem costs can be reduced with theB30,sincethereisnoneedfordedicated,or interposing, CTs. TheB30 comeswithadvanced features, such as breakerfailure, CT trouble detection, under-voltage supervision, and dynamic busreplica.With itsextremeflexibility,whichincludesaCTratiomismatchofupto32:1between terminals, the B30 is the idealsolutioninawidevarietyofbusdifferentialapplications.

PartoftheUniversalRelayfamily,theB30comeswithavarietyofversatilefeaturestruly integrating protection, monitoring,metering, communicationand control inoneeasy-to-usedevice.TheUniversalRelayfamilyoffershigherdegreeofmodularityin its design and functionality providingsuperior performance in protection andcontrolmeetingthetoughestrequirementsofthemarketplace.

Bus Differential Protection

TheB30isbasedonacentralizedphase-segregatedarchitecturethatdoesnotrelyon extensive communications betweenIEDs,anapproach that increasesoverallreliability.

The B30 provides fast and secure lowimpedancebusprotectionwithsub-cycletrippingtimesaveraging0.75cycles.The

primaryprotectionisbasedondifferentialand directional protection principles,and uses a dedicated CT saturationmechanism for additional through-faultstability. This mechanism is capable ofdetectingsaturationofCTsasquicklyastwo milliseconds into an external fault .Theoverallsystemcostscanbereducedwith the B30 since there is no need fordedicated,orinterposing,externalCTs.Thetwodifferentialzonescanhandletwosmall buses, split bus, or single bus barwithsupervisionzone.

Dynamic Bus Replica

TheB30providesadynamicbus replicafor each zone of differential protection.Built-inprogrammablelogicremovestheneed for external auxiliary relays, andprovidestheabilityto includeorexclude

currentsdynamicallyfromthedifferentialzones. This allows the B30 to follow theactual busbar configuration with noexternalswitchingofCTcircuitsrequired.TheB30alsoavoidsblindandovertrippingspots in simple bus configurations.Reliabilityisincreasedandcostsreducedbyeliminatingauxiliaryrelaysthatwouldotherwisebeusedforswitchingphysicalcurrents. Theability tomonitorauxiliaryswitchesandacontactdiscrepancyalarmalsoprovidesincreasedsecurity.

Breaker Failure Protection

The B30 is the single point for protection, control, metering, and monitoring in one integrated device that can easily be connected directly into DCS or SCADA monitoring and control systems like Viewpoint Monitoring.

External Check-Zone

An optional external check-zone canbe used to prevent operation of thedifferentialprotectionduetoCTtroubles.IfoneB30currentinputisleftunusedandanalternativesetofcurrentsignalsisavailablefrom independent CTs, the currents canbe combined externally and connectedto the relay. Two phase overcurrentelementsareavailabletocheckthelevelof this independently formeddifferentialcurrenttosupervisethemaindifferentialprotection.

IEC 61850 Process BusThe IEC 61850 Process Bus module isdesignedtointerfacewiththeGEMultilinHardFiberSystem,allowingbi-directionalIEC 61850 fiber optic communications.The HardFiber System is designed tointegrate seamlessly with the existingUniversal Relay applications, includingprotection functions,FlexLogic,meteringandcommunications.TheGEMultilin HardFiber System offersthefollowingbenefits:

The built-in advanced disturbance recording function allows users to view the COMTRADE files and trouble shoot bus fault . The internal operation of the B30 elements, logic, and outputs can be monitored in real time to simplify commissioning and troubleshooting procedures. Two cases are shown here:

External Fault: Even with heavy CT saturation and with only 1 msec of saturation free current B30 is stable for through faults. See the Directional Comparison element output, which adds additional security to the bus differential functionInternal Fault: For internal fault the CT saturation flag is not set and the directional element output is safely ignored resulting in an operating time of less than 10 msec.
