ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
Mullauna Students Help Community Members
Congratulations to Daniel Kepper and Alicia MacKay-Lambert for
coming to the aid of strangers. Whilst at the train station after school
on 22 June, Daniel and Alicia rendered first aid to a member of the
public, called for an ambulance and waited with the patient until the
ambulance arrived. Thank you for being responsible, capable and caring
citizens.
Battle of the Houses
The annual Battle of The Houses competition will be held on the
afternoon of Friday 30 June, the last day of Term 2, and the friendly
rivalry is heating up. House Captains have been busily organising
rehearsal sessions for students and staff, with guarded secrecy in
relation to their planned performances. We eagerly await the event
and look forward to students and teachers performing together in the
usual light hearted and cohesive manner, and for the first time, on
Mullauna College’s new stage.
Challenge Evening
On the evening of Wednesday 21 June, Year 7 students shared their
learning with their families by creating and presenting short movies
that reflected their interdisciplinary projects over the past few weeks.
The evening had a buzz about it with students, parents and teachers
discussing the rationale behind each of the video presentations.
Congratulations to the Year 7 students for the creative and self-directed
manner in which they worked together.
On Thursday 22 June, Year 7 students visited the Melbourne Museum
and investigated how museums provide information in today’s
environment. They examined ancient civilizations including Greece,
China and Egyptian Mummies. During Term 3, students will transform
the Junior School building into “A Night at The Museum” where they
will share their learning with their families.
Keys Please
VicRoads heavily engaged Year 10 students in a Keys Please
presentation in relation to acquiring a drivers licence. Students were
2
advised of safe practices, the key requirements and how to avoid potentially dangerous practices. Every student
received a Learner drivers log book and L plates in preparation for their driving journey.
VCE
On Wednesday 21 June, Bob Hillman the VCAA Chief Assessor for English, presented a session to Year 12 students in
relation to how to best prepare for their English exam. Students were engaged during the entertaining and
informative session, and are working with their teachers to further improve their understanding of how to perform
at their best come exam time. To further assist students, the next 40+ breakfast will be held on Friday 30 June.
As the holidays approach, it is important that Year 12 students take the time to recharge, as well to use the holiday
period as an opportunity to revise Unit 3 and continue to work on their Unit 4 work tasks. By the end of Term 3, all
year 12 course work will be complete and practice exams will be held during the first week of the September
holidays.
As we approach the cold weather and short hours of daylight in Term 3, the College Captains are busily planning for
Year 12 activities that will continue to build strong relationships within the cohort and provide special events for
students to look forward to, amidst the many hours of study.
Fund Raising for State Schools Relief
On the last day of Term 2, all students are invited to come to school in casual clothing as per the Mullauna
expectations that were emailed via Compass. On this occasion, student leaders are fundraising for State Schools
Relief which is a not for profit organisation that supports students in financially disadvantaged situations. Students
in casual clothing are asked to provide a $2 donation that will be collected during period 1. Student leaders will
publish the amount raised to the school community at Battle of the Houses.
Thank you and Farewell
I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Mullauna community for their goodwill, dedication and support
over the past decade. We are fortunate to have delightful students, a committed staff and passionate parents and
carers.
Over the years, Mullauna College has been perpetually working to improve student learning and has broadened
opportunities for students and staff within and outside of the classroom. As we continue to work towards teaching
that is relevant to today’s and tomorrow’s students, the college is entering into a very exciting time.
The new buildings provide spaces that enable creativity, inquiry and working together for students and staff. Whilst
the spaces provide opportunity, what happens within them is the key, and teachers have been diligently working to
create and deliver a curriculum that engages and challenges students to be critical thinkers.
I wish the school every success as it continues to work to guarantee a high quality education for happy and
motivated students of all abilities, and look forward to hearing of the great achievements of our students and staff.

YEAR 12 ENGLISH/EAL EXCURSION
MEDEA—EURIPIDES
On Wednesday 17 May, all year 12 students of English and EAL had the privilege of seeing a live theatre performance of Euripides' play Medea at the Darebin Arts Centre. The performance gave the classes clear insight and understanding into the play's directions and the following Q&A with the actors and directors proved exceptionally helpful. The performance was extremely beneficial to the students’ understanding of their Unit 3 point of focus for the term and helped prepare them for the eventual text response for this Area of Study. Overall the day was an incredible experience for the year 12 cohort and one that will surely help them in their future revision.

INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS— a Snapshot
Anthony BAO – year 11 from China
Anthony is returning home for the June break to celebrate his sister’s 30th birthday with a family
party. Anthony was asked
“What are some of the common questions you are asked by your Chinese friends back home?”
He replied, “I am always asked about the quality of the air in Melbourne as China has signifi-
cant pollution and it is rare to see blue skies.” Anthony is also asked, “What are Australians like
and how does school life in Melbourne compare with China?”
Sam TAN – year 12 from China
Sam made some interesting comments in a conversation comparing Education in China with
that of Mullauna College. In the part of China that Sen comes from, students go to school on a
weekend for two half days as well as a whole week of schooling. Sen indicated there is more
pressure on students at school in China as school starts at 7.30 am. Sen, however, is still able to
play basketball after school in China like he does here, except back home he only has half an
hour to spare on his sport.
Miguel Deveraturda – year 8 from the Philippines
Miguel compared his home in the Philippines with Australia. He stated that back home his
house was on land they could farm with a river, whereas here in Australia his family live in an
apartment which is smaller and there is no land. In the Philippines he did not have a mobile
phone but he does here because his family like him to be able to make contact should there be
an emergency.
Elina San – year 8 from Myanmar
Elina talked about her favourite food in Australia being hamburgers whereas in her home coun-
try she prefers monthaikha—a noodle soup. She uses her phone mainly to chat with her family.
Vikki Phyu – year 10 from Myanmar
Vikki has just returned from her home as she needed to attend the funeral of her Grandfather.
Custom requires family members not to travel for 21 days after such an event. Mullauna College
extends its condolences to Vikki and her family.
On the topic of food Vikki shared her favourite food is tealeaf salad which basically comprises
beans, spices and tea leaves.

MATHS @ MULLAUNA
This term some of our year 8 and year 9 students have been making videos for the CHOOSEMATHS Awards. This year the theme for the awards is “Maths is our Future”. The CHOOSEMATHS Student Awards are run by The Australian Mathematical Sciences Institute (AMSI) and the BHP Billiton Foundation to celebrate mathematical achievement, creativity and excellence in Australian schools. The awards encourage students to get creative and step beyond the classroom to bring their understanding of mathematics to life on film. The student videos are available to be viewed on YouTube and can be found by searching for the “Mullauna Maths” channel.
More information about the awards can be found at http://teachers.choosemaths.org.au/student-awards/ .
