SP JAIN CHANDIGARH, SEPT 13 Dubbing the SAD chief’s sudden U- turn on the farm ordinances as a cheap gimmick to hoodwink the farming community, Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh on Sunday challenged Sukhbir Badal to quit the BJP-led central govern- ment to prove his party’s sincerity in the matter. Pointing out that, as a member of the ruling al- liance at the Centre, the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) was party to the Ordinances and had sup- ported them uncondition- ally, the Chief Minister slammed Sukhbir over his party’s brazen double standards on the issue and asked if the Akali leader was ready to vote against the Ordi- nances in Parliament as and when the central government puts them to vote. The Chief Minister termed as to- tal hogwash the SAD’s so-called ap- peal to the union government not to present the three central agricultural ordinances for approval in Parlia- ment until all reservations expressed by farmer organisations were ad- dressed. The Chief Minister recalled Sukhbir’s assertion, during the all- party convened by him (Captain Amarinder) on the issue in June, that the central government had assured SAD that there would be no tinkering of the MSP. It is more than obvious now that the SAD president had lied then in a deliberate bid to mislead the farmers, he said, adding that given his track record, nothing that Sukhbir was saying now on the issue could be believed or trusted in. The double standards of the Akalis have become a rule rather than the exception, said the Chief Minister, point- ing to SAD’s stance on CAA/NCR, among other major issues concerning the state. “What were they doing when the Or- dinances were being brought in? Why did they not object? After all, they are part of the central government responsible for these Ordinances?he asked. The Chief Minister said the SAD’s sudden decision to urge the Centre ‘not to rush through the Ordi- nances’ reflected their desperation to get back into the good books of the farmers unions/organisations with an eye on the Punjab Assembly elec- tions, which were just about 18 months away. After compromising the interests of the farmers so brazen- ly, the Akalis were now trying to cov- er up their catastrophic blunder with their latest tactic, he said, adding that the people of Punjab, including the farmers, knew better than to trust Sukhbir. In every home that my wife and I have occupied sinceour marriage, and in all the homes my parents madewhile I grew up, there was a piece of furniture that

held a group of airtight plastic or steel containers, placedfairly high up, outside the reach of a child. If you openedany one of those containers, you’d find a bunch of openedplastic bags containing biscuits or deep fried bits of joy,or junk food. I call this bit of furniture, which you willfind in practically every middle-class home, the JFK, forJunk Food Kupboard. It has one branch in the fridge, in abox that contains pieces of cake, chocolate, and othersweets, and a second in the freezer, the home of ice-cream.The shop that supplies most of its contents, incidentally,is the JFP, or Junk Food Paradise, which we will visitshortly. Yoga, I believe, is one of the forms of disciplinethat most people give up regularly. I believe this for tworeasons. First, it was Google that told me, so it must betrue, like everything else Google tells us. Second, I knowhow tough it is, for I very nearly gave it up some yearsago. I managed to hang on to it despite the creaking ofaged limbs and so on, so I even got a bit smug about con-tinuing my practice in the face of all these difficulties. Myweight stayed more or less the same for a decade or so.The lockdown changed all that. Week after week of stay-ing put, with large and regular meals and plenty of snacksin between, turned my waistline into a sort of coastline.By the middle of May, I had developed an equatorialbulge, and the effort of getting into my clothes left mebreathless. Worst of all, the roundness was spreading. Iupped my yoga practice, but to no avail, for it only mademe hungrier and fatter. At the end of May, when I discovered I could no longershoehorn myself into my loosest pair of jeans, I decidedto go on a diet. Wondering what kind of diet to go on, Iturned once again to reliable old Google, which came upwith something — after searching through a gazillionsites in a micro-second — that sounded about right.Intermittent fasting. You restrict your eating to a six-hour period every day, during which you eat whatever you like. During the re-maining 18 hours, you fast, your only intake being plainwater or tea without sugar or milk.I’ve been doing this for some weeks now: I eat only be-tween eight in the morning and two in the afternoon. Solet share with you what my day looks like. I come awake, without an alarm of any kind, by half-past-five. Under thenew scheme of time, this is 150 minutes AM (Ante Meal-time), with each minute feeling like an hour.

Learning foreign language is not a crime, butto despise one's mother tongue is treason

MUKESH KUMAR

Hindi is the mother languageof India, we proudly believethat we are Hindi speakers;the tone of unity in diversityresonates with Hindi. It is theduty of the countrymen to re-spect this language; it is be-lieved that language is ameans of expressing emo-tions, with this means theworld can be changed. Thereis only one language in diver-sity which is the basis of uni-ty. The Constituent Assemblyof India unanimously took aunanimous decision on Sep-tember 14, 1949 and decidedto make Hindi the official lan-guage. In order to spread Hin-

di language in every region, atthe request of National Lan-guage Promotion Committee,Wardha, in the year 1953,September 14 was declared tobe celebrated all overIndia as Hindi Dayevery year. But todayHindi is being ig-nored. In the last fewyears, when Hindiwas declared as anoptional subject inschools in Punjabtoo, there was a lot ofanger in the minds of Hinditeachers in Punjab. It is note-worthy that according to Arti-cle 343 of the Constitution,Hindi has the status of statelanguage and according to Ar-

ticle 351; it is the duty of theUnion to increase the spreadof Hindi language. Hindi isspoken in 70 percent of thevillages of India. Even today,

on the occasion of HindiDay, controversies, speeches, poetry recita-tions, essays, competi-tions are held and smallceremonies are also or-ganized by various polit-ical parties, but still theyouth remember this daydue to the trends. In fact,

we all believe that the mostspoken language is not gettingthe respect it deserves. It is be-cause of this condition thatone's own language is beingconsidered small.

Jupiter's moons are hot.Well, hotter than theyshould be, for being so far

from the Sun. In a processcalled tidal heating, gravita-tional tugs from Jupiter'smoons and the planet itselfstretch and squish the moonsenough to warm them. As aresult, some of the icy moonscontain interiors warmenough to host oceans of liq-uid water, and in the case ofthe rocky moon Io, tidal heat-ing melts rock into magma.

Researchers previouslybelieved that the gas giantJupiter was responsible formost of the tidal heating asso-ciated with the liquid interiorsof the moons, but a new studypublished in Geophysical Re-search Letters found thatmoon-moon interactions maybe more responsible for theheating than Jupiter alone.

"It's surprising becausethe moons are so much small-er than Jupiter. You wouldn'texpect them to be able to cre-ate such a large tidal re-sponse," said the paper's leadauthor Hamish Hay, a post-doctoral fellow at the JetPropulsion Laboratory inPasadena, California, who didthe research when he was agraduate student in the Uni-versity of Arizona Lunar andPlanetary Laboratory.

Understanding how themoons influence each other isimportant because it can shedlight on the evolution of themoon system as a whole.

Jupiter has nearly 80 moons, the four largest of which areIo, Europa, Ganymede, andCallisto.

"Maintaining subsurfaceoceans against freezing overgeological times requires afine balance between internalheating and heat loss, and yetwe have several pieces of ev-idence that Europa,Ganymede, Callisto, and oth-er moons should be oceanworlds," said co-authorAntony Trinh, a postdoctoral

research fellow in the Lunarand Planetary Lab. "Io, thelarge moon closest to Jupiter, shows widespread volcanicactivity, another consequenceof tidal heating, but at a high-er intensity likely experi-enced by other terrestrialplanets, like Earth, in theirearly history. Ultimately, wewant to understand the sourceof all this heat, both for its in-fluence on the evolution andhabitability of the manyworlds across the solar sys-

tem and beyond." Mgid "Res-onance creates loads moreheating," Hay said. "Basical-ly, if you push any object orsystem and let go, it will wob-ble at its own natural frequen-cy. If you keep on pushing thesystem at the right frequency, those oscillations get biggerand bigger, just like whenyou're pushing a swing. If youpush the swing at the righttime, it goes higher, but getthe timing wrong and theswing's motion is dampened."

Each moon's natural frequen-cy depends on the depth of itsocean. "These tidal reso-nances were known beforethis work, but only known fortides due to Jupiter, which canonly create this resonance ef-fect if the ocean is really thin(less than 300 meters or under1,000 feet), which is unlike-ly," Hay said. "When tidalforces act on a global ocean, itcreates a tidal wave on thesurface that ends up propagat-ing around the equator with a

certain frequency or period."According to the re-

searchers' model, Jupiter's in-fluence alone can't createtides with the right frequencyto resonate with the moonsbecause the moons' oceansare thought to be too thick. It'sonly when the researchersadded in the gravitational in-fluence of the other moonsthat they started to see tidalforces approaching the natu-ral frequencies of the moons.

When the tides generatedby other objects in Jupiter'smoon system match eachmoon's own resonant fre-quency, the moon begins toexperience more heating thanthat due to tides raised byJupiter alone, and in the mostextreme cases, this could re-sult in the melting of ice orrock internally.

For moons to experiencetidal resonance, their oceansmust be tens to hundreds ofkilometres -- at most a fewhundred miles -- thick, whichis in range of scientists' cur-rent estimates. However, there are some caveats to theresearchers' findings. Theirmodel assumes that tidal res-onances never get too ex-treme, Hay said. He and histeam want to return to thisvariable in the model and seewhat happens when they liftthat constraint. Hay also ishoping that future studies willbe able to infer the true depthof the oceans within thesemoons.

While the reduction of calories is linked with a host ofhealth benefits, a recent has highlighted a range ofbenefits that includes a longer lifespan to a much

lower chance of developing cancer, heart disease, diabetes andneurodegenerative conditions such as Alzheimer's.

A new study from teams led by Scripps Research Profes-sors Bruno Conti, PhD, and Gary Siuzdak, PhD, highlights thecritical role that body temperature plays in realising these diet-induced health benefits. Through their findings, the scientistspave the way toward creating a medicinal compound that im-

itates the valuable effects ofreduced body temperature.

The research appears inScience Signaling.

Conti has spent yearsstudying how and why calo-rie restriction leads to betterhealth, with the ultimategoal of translating the find-ings into medicines that canmimic what happens natu-rally when a person eats less.

One consistent observa-tion is that when mammals consume less food, their body tem-perature drops. It's evolution's way of helping us conserve en-ergy until the food is available again, Conti explains. It makessense, considering that up to half of what we eat every day isturned into energy simply to maintain our core body temper-ature. Conti's previous work showed that temperature reduc-tion can increase lifespan independently of calorie restriction--and that these effects involve activation of certain cellularprocesses, most of which remain to be identified.

On the flip side, studies have shown that preventing bodytemperature from dropping can actually counteract the posi-tive effects of calorie restriction. Notably, in an experiment in-volving calorie-restricted mice, anti-cancer benefits were di-minished when core body temperature remained the same.

Administration indifferent to agonyof Farmers, justice on streets

SUSHIL PANDIT

While 3 ordinances is-sued in the name offarmer empower-

ment and security have be-come a trouble for the exist-ing government, farmers arealso struggling for their sur-vival. They are forced to taketo streets today to make theiragony reach the present gov-ernment. Is this the dream ofa self-reliant India being real-ized? The farmer, who workshard day and night to producefood, sacrifices his life topacify the hunger of thewhole country, today, for theguilt of putting across hispoint, on the same farmer, sticks are being strewn on theroad.

Farmers have been ex-pressing their fury for manymonths, but on September10, the peaceful dharna heldin Pipli Grain Market ofHaryana was converted into ascene of lathi charge. Thegovernment is calling theanti-farmer ordinance asfarmer-friendly, but this de-cree on the table of reality isnot less than a big threat for86 percent farmers of thecountry. Government of Indiaseems to be working on thepolicy of 'Race Ahead, Dropthe Chase', leaving the race

behind in the present circum-stances. The adverseness ofthe government system isclearly visible. The govern-ment believes that throughthis ordinance, promotionand convenience will beavailable to farmers, produce, trade and commerce. Buthave the government policy-makers tried to think that thestructure of the Indian econo-my has never developed in afarmer-friendly way? If wetalk about the figures, about86 percent of the farmers inthe country have less than 2hectares of farm-able land. And the peasant class be-lieves that this anti-farmerpolicy of the government willprove to be bane for them. Sofar, the farmer is selling thecrop in the mandis at his lev-el through self-cultivation,but according to this ordi-nance, the mandate can beabolished, meaning that insmall market, the crops of the

farmer will be of no impor-tance because they will besoon eliminated. Accordingto government data, only 14percent of the farmers aregetting the benefit of MSP.On the basis of the ordinanceissued, the government hasensured that after the end ofthe "Incentive CommoditiesAct 1996", private compa-nies are now also dominatingthe agriculture sector. Thechances of getting estab-lished will increase. The gov-ernment, which has support-ed the reform of the agricul-tural sector in the self-suffi-cient India campaign, hasalso tried to clarify that in thefirst ordinance by the govern-ment, it will encourage thestorage of goods, ie, accord-ing to the policies, this law isformed to curb the scarcity ofgoods. If we talk in the gov-ernment's favor, this ordi-nance is being issued so far to

check hoarding. The govern-ment believes that now anyperson can store any amountof goods, but the question tobe considered is that in Indiathe farmer is so prosperousand capable that he can har-vest his crop till it gets theprice according to it, never, because the crop of thefarmer is sold at the time ofsowing, in front of the eco-nomic situation and the well-known conditions of thefarmer.

This ordinance would beequivalent to ridiculing it.Yes, hoarders and adherentscan benefit from it. In the sec-ond ordinance, APMC ie"Agriculture Produce MarketCommittee" will be abol-ished and "The Farmers Pro-duce, Trade and Commercewill be implemented accord-ing to which the farmer cansell his crop in any corner ofIndia.

Physicians claim more mobileuse is dangerous for eyes

JOGINDER DEV ARYABANGANA, SEP 13

Online studies may spoil children's eyes. The fear of this is constantly haunting theparents. Each school has set a differentpattern of its education. If someone issending material to study on WhatsApp,then many schools are conducting onlinestudies. Many students are conducting livemedium classes. In such a day, thestudents stick to the mobile. It should nothappen that in the case of educatingchildren, the defect should be created inthe eyes of their eyes. This concern isconstantly haunting the parents of thechildren. The reason is clear that studentshave been studying online since thelockdown, because the schools have notbeen opened yet. In such a situation, thechances of harm to the health of studentsremain constant. It is obvious that moreuse of mobile is fatal for the eyes. This has

also been confirmed by many researchers.Of course family members do not allowtheir children to use mobiles, but thesedays it is not possible to study childrenwithout mobiles. Under compulsion, parents have to buy mobiles for theirchildren in lockdown. While the businesswas affected in the lockdown, mobilevendors were enjoying a lot. Shopkeepershave made a profit from the sale ofexpensive mobiles. Buying expensivemobile was mandatory because theprocess of studying can only run onAndroid phones.

MANCHESTER: Star Australia batsman Steve Smith has been cleared to take part in the second ODI against England after passing a second concussion test on Saturday. Smith was a late withdrawal from Friday's first ODI, which Australia won by 19 runs to go 1-0 up in the three-match series, after sustaining a blow on the head in the nets from a throw-down by a coaching staff member on the eve of the match. The 31-year-old was withdrawn from the playing XI of the first ODI "as a precautionary measure."However, Smith has passed the two concussion tests, one on Friday and the other on Saturday, according to cricket.com.au."I think it was a good decision in the end. There's no need to take unnecessary risks with head injuries," all-rounder Mitch Marsh said."It probably gives our selection committee a few headaches now because the top order struck them beautifully, without getting a big score. Liverpool wins wild opener,Arsenal coasts as EPL beginsLONDON: Adopting his trademark crouching position in the technical area, Marcelo Bielsa closely studied the mayhem unfolding in front of him on the Anfield pitch. Bielsa's first English Premier League game as a manager was barely a half-hour old and already there'd been five goals, countless chances and furious, end-to-end drama. Back in the top division after a 16-year absence, Leeds is certainly going to be a fun watch under the Argentine coaching great this season.Bielsa's team went toe-to-toe with Liverpool in the first match of the champion's title defense and was denied a point only after conceding a late penalty, converted by Mohamed Salah to complete his hat trick and a wild 4-3 win for the hosts. "It was eventful," Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk said with a smile, summing up a chaotic match."They are going to give trouble to many teams in the league."Leeds didn't take a step back with its intense pressing style, coming from behind three times at an empty Anfield after initially going behind to Salah's first penalty of the game in the fourth minute.Salah was given the chance to win the match in the 88th minute after a foul by Leeds' high-profile new signing, Spain striker Rodrigo, and the Egypt forward didn't waste it. The Premier League was starting a month later than scheduled due to the pandemic that is still preventing fans from attending games. With the home crowd at Anfield often regarded as the team's 12th man, Liverpool is affected by the situation as much as anyone else.

IPL 13 will be good practice for Indians ahead of Australia series: Chappell

MELBOURNE: Former Australia skipper Ian Chappell reckons that the upcoming edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) will be good practice for the Indian players ahead of the series against Australia. The IPL 2020 is slated to be played in UAE from September 19-November 10 across three venues -- Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Sharjah. After the IPL, India, and Australia are slated to face off against each other in a four-match Test series. Chappell gave the example of former England all-rounder Ravi Bopara as to how an IPL stint helped him in his Test career."One thing is certain, where there's a will, there's a way, and the better players are dedicated to finding a solution. In the case of the Indian players, and some of the Australians, they will at least have some challenging IPL cricket in the lead-up to the December series. While this may not seem like ideal preparation for a tough Test series in Australia, it's worth recalling the thoughts of former England batsman Ravi Bopara in 2009," ESPNCricinfo quoted Chappell as saying.Mgid"After a stint in the IPL, Bopara was asked to return to England if this was appropriate preparation for a Test match. He responded by saying that looking to score at every opportunity gets your feet moving positively. He proved his point emphatically by scoring back-to-back centuries against West Indies," added the former Australian skipper. Chappell also laid down the advantages of having intra-squad matches due to this coronavirus pandemic but added how these sorts of games are especially challenging for the pacers. "The Indian players

could well adopt this attitude for a series in Australia that will impact the Border-Gavaskar trophy, the World Test

Championship, and their personal pride. It's unlikely India will have the luxury of lead-up matches

against tough opposition. More likely it will be intra-squad games, which can be helpful if the selection is judicious and pits good bowlers against equally talented batsmen.

Gun batting line-up Kings XI Punjab's USPNEW DELHI: The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 is just a few days away and the biggest question in everyone's minds is whether the KL Rahul-led Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) can go all the way this year? Rahul has been with the franchise for a couple of years now, and if his past record is anything to go by, he is likely to bring an aggressive flair to the Punjab-based franchise.

KXIP managed to reach the finals of IPL just once (2014), and after that, the side has struggled to even make the playoffs of the cash-rich league. But with the current edition now being played in UAE, the side would hope to reclaim the magic of their 2014 season.

The first leg of the 2014 season was played in UAE, and KXIP managed to win all their matches during that phase.

The team management also roped in Anil Kumble as head coach and Jonty Rhodes as fielding coach. The think tank then decided to get players like Glenn Maxwell, Jimmy Neesham and Sheldon Cottrell into the mix. Maxwell was bought for INR 10.75 crore while INR 8.5 crore were shelled out for Windies pacer Cottrell. Earlier this week, Kumble himself admitted that the side roped in Maxwell as they needed an impact player in the middle.
