Case study narrative – TO BE Genzebe Asnake Birko is a 12-year-old boy who

Woreda, Southern Nations and Nationalities of people’s Regional State. He has never been to school. Genzebe stays at home while his siblings and peers attend school every day. For over four years Genzebe has been suffering from Trachomatous trichiasis, a condition caused by repeated bacterial eye infections that lead to in-turned eyelashes rubbing against the eyeball causing irreparable damage and eventual blindness.

As his condition deteriorated, Genzebe wouldn’t go out to play with his friends on sunny days as the sunlight caused him unbearable pain. The white discharge also stopped him from wanting to join his friends in play. Genzebe became housebound and lonely as a result.

One day a neighbor who undergone a Trachomatous surgery informed Genzebe’s mother about the free eye care service on offer at Genta Bonke Primary Eye Care Unit (PECU). Genzebe’s mother, who was unable to pay for her son’s treatment, was thrilled.

Genzebe accompanied by his mother made their way to Genta Primary Eye Care Unit as soon as they heard about the information. After travelling for more than one and half hour on foot, they reached to Genta PECU.

S/r Yemisrach, an IECW at Genta PECU, examined Genzebe’s eyes and found out that he had been suffering from Bilateral Trachomatous Trichiasis all along. In just about 43 minutes, the surgery was completed with successful result.
